The Principles of Mechanics; Explaining and Demonstrating the General Laws of Motion, The Laws of Gravity, Motion of Descending Bodies

      W. Innys and J. Richardson, London, 1754. First Edition. Hardcover (rebound in leather). Attractively rebound in brown calf, blindtooled and gilt, with new endpapers on early marbled paper. Foxed, stained, age toned and chipped througout. Many of the plates repaired at the folds with Japanese paper, a few with early repairs with newspaper on the verso and earlier repairs reattaching the plates by sewing. Plate edges chipped in the margins with some loss onto the plate area in a few cases, offsetting onto text pages. Despite all this, the 32 plates are complete and largely intact, and the text is complete and legible. Though it went through editions until 1825 and an abridgement in 1769, (Bibliotheca Mechanica 101/102) the first edition is rarely seen. The detailed plates show windmills, water wheels, fountains, and, most famously, a sail powered cart with gears that directly supply power to the front wheels. xi, (5), 312pp. ESTC N11794.         THE BLUE WINGED TEAL [QUERQUEDULA AMERICANA FUSCA]

London, 1754. Second Edition. Hand-colored Plate. The Blue-Winged Teal is Plate T99 from the Second Edition of Catesby';s NATURAL HISTORY OF CAROLINA, FLORIDA, AND THE BAHAMA ISLANDS. Engraved and hand-colored on a 14 x 20.5" sheet. The accompanying text material is included.~~Englishman Mark Catesby first came to America in 1712, making Williamsburg in the Virginia colony his first stop. He quickly became enraptured with little known flora and fauna of the colonies and stayed for seven years. His second trip was in 1722, and was made under the auspices of the Royal Society with the charge to publish the first scientific description of America';s plants and animals. On his return to England, he spent the rest of life writing and illustrating THE NATURAL HISTORY. Of the "Birds, Beasts, Fishes, Serpents, Insects, and Plants" that Catesby found, the birds occupied the forefront. Engraved and colored one hundred years before Audubon, his straightforward presentation~of birds in their natural settings is compelling and fresh.

The History of Sir Charles Grandison in a Series of LettersÖ

London,: Printed for S. Richardson, 1754.. Seven volumes, small octavo, single leaf publisher's advertisement in volume IV, marginal tear with slight loss to one page of volume III and two pages in volume VI, some pages becoming loose (see volume IV), early owner's inscription to each title-page ("Jurin"), occasional eighteenth-century marginalia; overall an attractive set in contemporary full calf, banded spines with double green and red labels, some wear including chipping to some of the labels, and chipping to head and tail of spines, a little shaken. First editions: a handsome set, the third and last of Richardson's great epistolary novels, in striking contemporary condition.Considered a companion to the earlier Clarissa, here Richardson gave a portrait of a good man, to balance some of the portraits of bounders and cads that had graced his earlier novels. Richardson's patience - and vanity - had been tried by the publishing success of Fielding's Tom Jones, and he took some time to complete the tale. It was published anonymously ("by the Editor of Pamela and Clarissa"), but in the preface Richardson all but admitted his authorship. The novel has not been considered the equal of Clarissa - "none of his three novels has set modern criticism so much at variance as Grandison" notes the Cambridge History of English Literature - but its greatness is considered to be Richardson's ability to present a rich and varied cast of characters, and the freshness of his observation, particularly with regards to the comic figures. Jane Austen and George Eliot both thought highly of the book, and Ruskin ranked it with Don Quixote, though others have found Charles Grandison impossibly perfect and consequently uninteresting.Although showing a few signs of wear, and indeed of having been carefully read, this is an attractive set.Rothschild, 1752.

Account of a Journey from Williamsburg to the French Fort, near the Lake Erie, in Virginia. In The Gentleman's Magazine

London: D. Henry and R. Cave, 1754. 4-page article within the entire June edition of The Gentleman's Magazine. A scarce and important account providing one of the earliest descriptions of 21-year old Major George Washington's famous journey from Williamsburg to deliver a letter from Governor Dinwiddie to the French commandant at Fort Le Boeuf near Lake Erie demanding that the French abandon the area. Published shortly after Washington's journal was printed for the House of Burgesses in February and at the same time as a similar "extract" of the account was published in The London Magazine. This article copies much verbatim from Washington's Journal and includes considerable information about Washington's meetings with potential Indian allies and his arduous return journey by foot and raft in the freezing cold during which he was ambushed by a party of "French Indians." Removed from a bound volume. Tight binding with clean pages. Very light wear.. Newspaper. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

1754 - An early vocabulary on the Tagalog language printed on rice paper at Manila by the Jesuits. 1754. Manila. En la Imprenta de la Compania de Jesus, Nicolas de la Cruz Bagay. In folio (298 mm x 200 mm). 15 ff. 619 + 1 + 33 + 190(192), missing 465/466 & 471/472. Contemporary limp vellum with ties, spine lettered in ink, beginning to become lose, ties as fragments but overall fine. Printed on rice paper. Title with loss, mainly marginal but affecting some letters, generally exceptionally clean and crisp, last folios with minor marginal paper loss. First edition, exceedingly rare; Palau “Primera edición rarisima”. According to AE no other copy has ever gone to auction. Indeed the rarity is legendary, all Manila printed Vocabularies are scarce, as they were meant for heavy use; one of these characteristics –large and printed on rice paper- are even more so, but to find a copy presenting this condition and only lacking two leaves is exceptional. Both Noceda and San Lucar were Jesuit Priests advocated to working with Philippine locals; thus their interest in their language and traducing it in hopes of a more fluent cultural transmission, as well as propagating the Christian Faith. Furthermore, the size and beauty of the imprint make it interesting typographically, as perhaps one of the largest works printed in the Philippines by the Jesuits at the time. The Tagalog is defined as an Austronesian language, spoken by a third of the Philippines and is the most widely studied language in the Philippines, spoken in the most thickly populated and fertile regions of South West Luzon and the areas adjacent to the colonial capital of Manila. It is actually the basis of the Filipino language. A second edition would be printed only in 1832 at Valladolid. According to CCPBE there are only two copies in Spain and we are unable to trace copies at the United States and United Kingdom. Palau, 192020. Medina, Manila, 249.         The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands: Containing the Figures of Birds, Beasts, Fishes, Serpents, Insects, and Plants; Particularly the Forest-Trees, Shrubs, and other Plants, not hitherto Described

London: Charles Marsh; Thomas Wilcox; Benjamin Stichall, 1754. 2 volumes. Folio (21 x 14 inches). Title-pages printed in red and black in English and French, text in parallel columns of English and French, dedication and index leaves in both volumes, 220 hand-colored etched plates after and by Catesby, folding hand-colored engraved map in volume 2, "An Account of Carolina and the Bahama Islands" bound following plates of volume 2 (in which p. vii has an interesting 1/4-page laid-on paper repair done before the leaf was printed), etched headpiece by Catesby, historiated woodcut initials (some light to moderate offsetting, foxing, and staining, a few plates bound upside down, supplemental plate19 in volume one misnumbered 20, plate 49 in volume 2 foxed). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt (rebacked to style, corners repaired, joints weak); cerise morocco clamshell boxes. Provenance: 19th-century armorial bookplates of John Spencer, Esq on each front paste-down; engraved bookplates of Harold Charles Drayton (1901-1966), British financier famous for championing independent television in the early 1950s. He was a discerning collector who "learnt to like the best and this applied not least to claret, which he dispensed generously" on each front free endpaper; Laird U. Park Jr., Americana Library. "The most famous color-plate book of American plant and animal life & [and] a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt). Second edition, revised by George Edwards, text and plates on paper with various watermarks, first 20 text leaves of volume 2 with page numerals corrected by hand, as often; "DU" on title-page corrected by hand. Catesby's preface details his two journeys to the New World and the development of his Natural History, including his decision to etch his plates himself in order to ensure both accuracy and economy. "Instead of perpetuating the previous stiff, profile manner of presentation, Catesby devised the method of mingling plants and animals in logical groupings, most often with accuracy and with proportional scale between figure and plant. He did his utmost to convey something of the particular habits or movements of each species. Simple though they are, he infused his compositions with a sense of movement and vitality not usual prior to his work" (Norelli). From the distinguished libraries of Charles Drayton and Laird U. Park. Anker 94; Dunthorne 72; Ellis Mengel 477; Fine Bird Books 65; Great Flower Books 53; Hunt 486 (first edition); McGill/Wood 281; Norelli, American Wildlife Painting 73; Sabin 11059.
