A Plan of London on the same scale as that of Paris: In Order to ascertain the Difference of the Extent of these two Rivals, the Abbe de la Grive's plan of Paris, & that of London by J. Rocque have been divided into equal Squares where London Contains 39, and Paris but 29, so that the Superfice of London to that of Paris as 39 to 29 or as 5455 Acres to 4028. London therefore exceeds Paris, by 1427 Acres, the former being 8 1/2 square Miles & Paris only 6 1/3. by J. Rocque Chorographer to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, in the Strand, London 1754. R. Parr sculp. To the most High Puissant & Noble Prince John Duke of Montague &c. Grand Master of the most Honourable Order of the Bath, Master General of the Ordnance. Master of the Great

Publish'd according to Act of Parliament,, London, 1754 - Printed on silk 430 by 620mm (17 by 24.5 inches). Engraved map printed on silk, extending west to east from Hounslow to Woolwich, and north to south from Tottenham Hale to Croydon. Howgego 101 state (1). The map extends to what we now know as Greater London. It is based upon Rocque's map of 'London and The Country Near ten Miles Round' printed on 16 sheets and published in 1746. Above the plan the title appears in English and French, and states that the map is intended to be used to compare London and Paris "in order to ascertain the difference of the extent of these two rivals". The text goes on to say that London "exceeds Paris by 1427 Acres". Whether this deemed London the winner is unclear, as size is not everything. Below the plan is a dedication to the Duke of Montague, together with allegorical figures and the Duke's coat-of-arms. Rocque also produced a companion map of Paris in order for the gentleman to compare the cities side-by-side.Scale: 1 1/4 inches to 1 statute mile.

Numenius & c. [Scarlet Ibis]

London:. 1754.. Second edition. Stunning print of this oft illustrated bird, from Catesby's "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida & the Bahama Islands", "the most famous color plate book of American plant and animal life... (and) a fundamental and original work for the study of American species" (Hunt). "Instead of perpetuating the previous stiff, profile manner of presentation, Catesby devised the method of mingling plants and animals in logical groupings, most often with accuracy and with proportional scale between figure and plant. He did his utmost to convey something of the particular habits of movements of each species. Simple though they are, he infused his compositions with a sense of movement and vitality not usual prior to his work" (Norelli). Plate T84, entitled "Numenius &c". Copper engraving with original hand-color. 22 x 35 cms, nice plate impression and ample margins. A very fresh impression, lovely contemporary coloring.

        Anas Bahamensis [White-Cheeked Pintail]

London 1754 - A fine image from Catesby's 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands', "the most famous colour-plate book of American plant and animal life.a fundamental and original work for the study of American species." (Hunt) Catesby's Natural History is a vibrant and original work in which each plate seems to have been created without preconception or habitual form, embodying wit and the love every true naturalist feels for nature's beings. Far from being a mere animal and plant identification book, this is a testament to the glory of nature and life. The White-cheeked Pintail or Bahama Pintail is the northernmost subspecies of this handsome duck, which is found in Florida as well as the Bahamas, and in Trinidad and Tobago, and parts of South America. Trained as a botanist, Catesby travelled to Virginia in 1712 and remained there for seven years, sending back to England collections of plants and seeds. With the encouragement of Sir Hans Sloane and others, Catesby returned to America in 1722 to seek materials for his 'Natural History'; he travelled extensively in Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, sending back further specimens. His preface provides a lengthy account of the development of this work, including his decision to study with Joseph Goupy in order to learn to etch his plates himself to ensure accuracy and economy. A lovely and important work, embodying the most impressive record made during the colonial period of the natural history of an American colony. The most significant work of American natural history before Audubon's Birds of America . Cf. Anker 95; cf. Clark I:55; cf. Dunthorne 72; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 86; cf. Accessere curae novae atque animadversiones Ioannis Augusti Bachii (.).

A Still life of summer flowers, roses, carnations, tulips and peonies in a terra cotta figural urn on a stone ledge with a nest of eggs and with butterflies

      - Paul Theodor van Brussel (Dutch, 1754-1795) A Still life of summer flowers, roses, carnations, tulips and peonies in a terra cotta figural urn on a stone ledge with a nest of eggs and with butterflies Oil on canvas Canvas size: 28” x 25”; framed size: 25 1/4” x 31 1/4” Signed l.r.: P.T. van Brussel Paul Theodor van Brussel's opulent bouquet typifies the late Dutch style in flower painting. The magnificent flowers cascade over the plinth upon which they are arranged, leading the viewers eye to the nest of eggs unsteadily perched at the edge of the stone ledge. Each sumptuous bloom sways at the end of an elegantly meandering stem, stimulating visual interest and creating an ever-moving composition. Yet within this image of perfection is hidden reality. The fly and butterfly remind us of the transience of natural beauty while at the same time giving the composition vitality. Born at Zuid Polsbroek, Holland, Brussel was a pupil of Jan Augustini at Haarlem. His first employment was in designing and painting wallpapers, but after his marriage in 1774, the artist turned to the creation of fruit and flower paintings. As can be seen in this example, he found inspiration in the works of Jan van Huysum. Brussel later lived at Amsterdam where he died at the age of forty-one, it is said by drowning.

- Two volumes, twelvemo. 2], vi, 345; [iv], 335, [1, errata] pp. Woodcut initials and decorations. Contemporary French catspaw calf, gilt-decorated spines with morocco labels, edges stained red. Binding extremities lightly rubbed, short split to upper joint of Volume I. Generally a very good, clean copy. First edition of the most comprehensive and best known work of Condillac (1714-80), French follower of Locke and Newton. Condillac's philosophy of sensationismÑthat all knowledge is based on the sensesÑrefuted Berkeley's idealism and anticipated Comte's positivism. In the present work, Condillac demonstrates his doctrine by imagining a humanoid statue, "organized internally like us, and animated with an intellect devoid of ideas of any sort," whose marble exterior prevent the use of any of its senses. By unlocking the statue's senses one by one, Condillac shows how its mind would be generated by the constant addition of more and more sense-experience. His highly original theory of language as the analyst of experience "united philosophical empiricism with the account of behavior (later called utilitarian) that explained it by the preference for pleasure over pain" (DSB). Condillac's theories influenced the work of Destutt de Tracy, Bonnet, Cabanis, Volney, Garat, GinguenŽ and others. Garrison and Morton 4968. Heirs of Hippocrates 935. Tchemerzine III, 477.       Lima: En la impr. de la Plazuela de San Christoval, 1754 [10]+257 pages numbered on recto only. Duodecimo (5 3/4" x 4") bound in original velum. (Palau 337262; Sabin-96271; Medina, Lima 1068) 3d and best edition.Medina points out that there has been some uncertainty, not to say controversy, over the identify of the revisers of Torres' original grammar. Certainly this, the third edition, was not printed under the supervision of Figueredo, who had died many years before its publication. The later revisions are attributed to Padres Jacinto Ochoa and Juan Ignacio Aguilar. Diego de Torres Rubio, one of the earliest authorities on native American languages, was born at Alcazar de Conseugra, Toledo, in 1557, and began his novitiate at Valencia in 1572. He joined the Society of Jesus, and in 1579, sailed for Peru, where he made practically a life-long study of the native languages. His first grammar and vocabulary on the General language of Peru, called Quichua was published in Seville in 1603, and was followed by other works, in which the original vocabularies were amplified by phrases and words not in daily use. This Peruvian book of grammar and vocabulary is the third edition after 1619 and 1701, much enlarged by Juan de Figuerdo whose work on the Vocabulario de la lengua Chinchaisuyo are included.Description:Worn with ties stubbed; front hinge repaired; lacks 5 text leaves (12, 66, 67, 248 and the terminal leaf) and any blanks preceding the title, pages 138 through 177 wormed in lower margin occasionally affecting text, page 201 top margin torn affecting two words in text. Over all a fair copy of a very scarce work.

Sheet 1: ample margins at left, top and bottom, right side trimmed to platemark in upper portion; upper right edge reinforced from verso with archival tissue; Sheet 2: ample margins at left, top and bottom, right side trimmed to within platemark; Sheet 3: ample margins at left, top and bottom, right side trimmed to platemark in lower half; lower right edge reinforced from verso with archival tissue; Sheet 4: ample margins at right, top and bottom, left side trimmed at or just outside platemark; right edge reinforced from verso with archival tissue. A GRAND PROSPECT OF PHILADELPHIA: A FINE COPY OF THE 1754 SCULL-HEAP EAST PROSPECT FIRST STATE, with misspelling "Skull" at top and bottom of sheet 3. Founded in 1680 on a site between the Delaware and the Schuylkill Rivers, Philadelphia was ideally situated for trade and by the mid 18th century, it had become the principal port on the Atlantic coast as well as the commercial and administrative hub of William Penn's province of Pennsylvania. In 1750, Thomas Penn, son of the founder, requested "a perspective view of the city," as a dramatic advertisement to attract more entrepreneurs, merchants and settlers to the city. George Heap, an accomplished local artist, undertook a detailed rendering, from the perspective of the New Jersey side of the Delaware. In 1752, he and the surveyor of the province, Nicholas Scull, advertised for advance subscribers to an engraving after Heap's drawing. But as he was about to sail for London to have his rendering engraved on copper, Heap suddenly died. Scull took over the project and, in London, entrusted the drawing to the highly regarded Flemish-born engraver, Gerard Vandergucht (1696-1766). The completed engraving was on a monumental scale, requiring four large folio sheets, when joined measuring 82 x 20 inches. It accurately depicts the bustling waterfront of Philadelphia, a windmill on an island and many sailing vessels, pennants flying, plying the broad river. The Penn family coat-of-arms is shown at the bottom of sheet 3, along with dedication to proprietors Thomas and Richard Penn. Sheet 4 features a detailed key, identifying streets, the Courthouse, the Statehouse (Independence Hall), a large number of steepled churches and the recently founded Academy (later the University of Pennsylvania). As Martin Snyder has written, "the use of almost seven feet of paper to portray less than a mile of waterfront, from present-day South Street to Vine Street permitted the details that is its great feature." The Scull-Heap print provides a unique view of the city that would become, a few years later, the seat of the Continental Congress and later, the capital of the newly independent nation. The grand image--the largest and most artistically significant view of any American city of its period--proved tremendously popular, and an initial press run of 500 copies was soon followed by a second of 250 copies (these with the corrected "Scull reading). Clearly, as Snyder writes, "the ravages of time upon such a giant and indeed unwieldy picture readily account for its extreme rarity today." The Scull-Heap engraving was not held in many important collections (Thomas W. Streeter, the Hon. J. William Middendorf, Laird Park, Pflaumer, Jay T. Snider) and we have located only six copies in American institutions: Colonial Williamsburg; Historical Society of Pennsylvania (2 copies, one in poor condition); Independence National Historic Park; New York Pub. Book.

An East Prospect of the City of Philadelphia; taken by George Heap from the Jersey Shore, under the Direction of Nicholas Scull, Surveyor General of the Province of Pennsylvania

Thomas Jefferys, London - Black and white copper-engraving (1754-68). Sheet size: 22 3/4 x 38". Inventory#: p405pmat. "Probably the finest view of an American city made before the Revolution" (Swift and McCusker). It was separately issued in 1754, and also appeared in Jeffrey's "A General Topography of North America", 1768. Both issues are very rare. The Sheet consists of a grand view of Philadelphia from the New Jersey shore along the upper margin (the "East Prospect"), which is admirably supplemented by a plan of the city (lower left), and fine views of "The State House" (lower right), and "The Battery" (lower center). The view proper (the "East Prospect") is adapted from Scull and Heap's mammoth earlier view of the city on six sheets, 1754, but with revisions suggested in the main by Thomas Penn. The size was reduced to one large but manageable sheet, the supplementary views and plan were added, and the view itself revised to include the Jersey shore of the Delaware River. The latter alteration was made so that the city would clearly be seen as a protected river port. 0

König Verlag, Strasburg 1754 - 351+[errata] pages with fold out diagram. Duodecimo (6 3/4" x 4 1/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine and front cover. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:476) First German edition. François-André Danican Philidor (September 7, 1726 – August 31, 1795), often referred to as André Danican Philidor during his lifetime, was a French composer and chess player. He contributed to the early development of the opéra comique. He was also regarded as the best chess player of his age; his book Analyse du jeu des Échecs was considered a standard chess manual for at least a century, and a well-known chess opening and a checkmate method are both named after him. Philidor started playing regularly around 1740 at the chess Mecca of France, the Café de la Régence. It was also there that he famously played with a friend from 'New England', Mr. Benjamin Franklin. The best player in France at the time, Legall de Kermeur, taught him. At first, Legall could give Philidor rook odds, but in only three years, Philidor was his equal, and then surpassed him. Philidor visited England in 1747 and decisively beat the Syrian Phillip Stamma in a match +8 =1 -1, despite the fact Philidor let Stamma have White in every game, and scored all draws as wins for Stamma. The same year, Philidor played many games with another strong player, Sir Abraham Janssen, who was then the best player in England, and with the exception of M. de Legalle, probably the best player Philidor ever encountered. He could win on an average one game in four off Philidor, at even terms; and Philidor himself declared that he could only give to Janssen the pawn for the move. In 1754, Philidor returned to France, after nine years of absence spent mostly in Holland and England. He was now a much stronger player, having successfully played with opponents of the calibre of Philip Stamma and Abraham Janssen, but, as G. Allen reports in The life of Philidor, it was not until his match with de Legal in 1755 that he can be considered the strongest player in the world. When Philidor left Paris, in 1745, although he had for some time been playing even games with M. de Legal. he had not ceased to recognize his old master as still his master and superior. But nine years of practice, with a great variety of players, had authorized him to look for neither superior nor equal; and when, in 1755, a match was arranged between the pupil and his master, who was still at the height of his strength, the result placed the crown firmly and indisputably upon the head of Philidor. In 1749, Philidor published his famous book Analyse du jeu des Échecs. He printed a second edition in 1777, and a third edition in 1790. The book was such an advance in chess knowledge that by 1871, it had gone through about 70 editions, and had been translated into English, German, Russian and Italian. In it, Philidor analyzed nine different types of game openings. Most of the openings of Philidor are designed to strengthen and establish a strong defensive center using pawns. He is the first one to realize the new role of the pawn in the chess game; and his most famous advice was the saying "The pawns are the soul of chess." Condition: Corners gently bumped, modern leather binding, some foxing, previous owner's name to title else a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The First French Work on Economics Using Mathematical Argument[FORBONNAIS, FranÁois VÃ?ron Duverger de]. Elemens du commerce. Premiere[- Seconde] Partie. Leiden and Paris: Chez Briasson..., 1754.Scarce first edition. Two twelvemo volumes. [6], 400, [2, errata]; [2], 276 pp.Contemporary French mottled calf. Spines decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments with two tan morocco gilt lettering labels, board edges decoratively tooled in gilt, edges stained red, marbled endpapers. A few minor rust spots. A wonderful copy. ìAfter initial employment in industry and trade in Nantes, [Forbonnaisís (1722-1800)] desire to obtain an official position in the government services (successful in 1756 when he was appointed general inspector of currency) inspired his career as a writer on economic and financial subjects. These all have a strong mercantilist flavour, and also display considerable antagonism to the Physiocrats. Forbonnais contributed a number of economic articles to the EncyclopÃ?die and provided translations of some important writings on commerce...Forbonnaisí major works are his ElÃ?mens du commerce (1754) and his Principes et observations oeconomiques (1767). The ElÃ?mens has the distinction of being the first French work on economics using mathematical argument. This is his analysis of equilibrium conditions with respect to the rates of exchange between more than two countries and in situations of bimetallism where there are differences in the price ratios of gold and silverî (The New Palgrave).Einaudi 1922.         Account of a Journey from Williamsburg to the French Fort, near the Lake Erie, in Virginia. In The Gentleman's Magazine

London: D. Henry and R. Cave, 1754. Newspaper. Very Good. Newspaper. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 4-page article within the entire June edition of The Gentleman's Magazine. A scarce and important account providing one of the earliest descriptions of 21-year old Major George Washington's famous journey from Williamsburg to deliver a letter from Governor Dinwiddie to the French commandant at Fort Le Boeuf near Lake Erie demanding that the French abandon the area. Published shortly after Washington's journal was printed for the House of Burgesses in February and at the same time as a similar "extract" of the account was published in The London Magazine. This article copies much verbatim from Washington's Journal and includes considerable information about Washington's meetings with potential Indian allies and his arduous return journey by foot and raft in the freezing cold during which he was ambushed by a party of "French Indians." Removed from a bound volume. Tight binding with clean pages. Very light wear.

        Syntomos eisagoge tes arabikes glosses.

Probably Wallachia (Bucharest?), December 1754.. Folio (205 x 315 mm). Autograph manuscript in Greek and Arabic, signed, on strong Central European writing paper (imitation of Dutch "Pro Patria" watermark). (Title page), 107 ff., numbered in Arabic and written on both sides. 19th-century half calf (by Emmanuell Horn, Constantinople) with giltstamped spine, titled in Greek letters, "Rakovitza Voevoda Grammatike tes arabikes glosses". Marbled endpapers.. Unique, unpublished grammar of and introduction to Arabic, composed in Greek by a ruler of the Ottoman Principality of Wallachia: his autograph manuscript, written in the year 1754, during his first term as monarch of Wallachia. Though most of the 18th century manuscripts produced in the Romanian region were already in the local vernacular, the country's lords were proud of both their hellenic heritage and of the high administrational position they occupied by the grace of the Sultan. - Constantin Racovica (1699-1764) was a member of the powerful Racovitza family, hellenized Moldavian and Wallachian boyars who provided the Danubian Principalities with several hospodars. When in the 17th and 18th century foreign relations and the general ability to conduct diplomatic negotiations with neighbors gained increasing importance for the Ottomans, the hermetic Turkish tradition proved a severe impediment, as court officials were largely untrained in western languages or culture. Conveniently, into this gap stepped the Phanariotes - Greek and hellenized families mostly native to the Fanar district of Constantinople, an administrationally skilled community with a long mercantile and educational tradition who came to occupy high posts of secretaries and interpreters to Ottoman officers. The Racovitzas became an influential clan within the Phanariote kinship network, thus advancing to one of Romania's leading families and repeatedly occupying the thrones in their native country. Constantin Racovita was first monarch of the Principality of Moldavia under Ottoman suzerainity from autumn 1749 to summer 1753, then became ruler of Wallachia until spring 1756, when he surrendered the throne to Constantine Mavrocordatos, himself once more returning to the throne of Moldavia (until 1757). In 1763/64 he once more briefly ruled Wallachia. - A striking example of cross-cultural language study and Greco-Arabic exchange at a crucial time for both the Ottoman Empire and the West, and a fine document of intersecting traditions in an area forming a crossroads between Islamic and western claims of power.
