Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Register (January to December 1754)

London.: D. Henry and R. Cave at St. John's Gate.. Volume XXIV.. 1754.. Bound volume for the year 1754 in what was a three-quarter leather binding, but with spine split with leather loss, covers detached and very worn and the text block split into three sections; 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; title page and preface; 603 pp and index. Volume notable for map, "British American Plantations" by Bowen, which appears to have been handcolored by a previous owner. MISSING map "Discoveries of Admiral de Fontes." Includes 27 handcolored plates of Baronets. Overall, contents in good condition, with plates bright and clean. Present is a bright and clean copy of Bowen's "Map of the British American Plantations...from Boston...to Georgia." (9 x 11.5 inches.) This highly detailed map identifies the Plantations along the east coast and also English and French forts, the topography of the region and established trails leading inland to the Mississippi. It is particularly noteworthy for the delineation of Indian tribes to the west of the Blue Ridge Mountains; indeed, it is a preeminent map in this regard. There are six or more engraved portraits of eminent men. Also present in the volume is an account of George Washington's "Journey from Williamsburg to the French Fort, near the Lake Erri, in Virginia." The object of Washington's travels was to dissuade Native Americans from all dealings with the French. A fascinating volume warranting the renewal of covers and spine. Contents in overall very good condition, with occasional soiling and offset. .

Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Register (January to December 1754)

London.: D. Henry and R. Cave at St. John's Gate.. Volume XXIV.. 1754.. Bound volume in 3/4 leather binding (spine perished, covers detached and very worn); 8.75 x 5.25 inches; title page and preface; 603 pp and index. Bookplate on verso of front cover of Richard Pulteney, MD, the English physician who advanced acceptance of Linnaean taxonomy and the author of the first English language biography of the botanist. It appears the volume subsequently became the property of the Exeter City Library, as is affirmed by the presence of several circular ink stamps on various pages. Volume notable for two (uncolored) maps, "British American Plantations" by Bowen, and "Discoveries of Admiral de Fontes." One plate, Bridge at Blois, suffers a clean tear along one fold. With regard to the plates, the volume has been eccentrically bound. Several plates are not present, others are bound not according to the publisher's instructions, while there are present plates from other sources. These plates are of eminent men of the time and are inserted at intervals throughout the volume. Overall, contents in very good condition, with plates bright and clean--although somewhat of a grab bag in terms of their organization plus the unlisted presence of additional subject matter. Also present is M. De l'Isle's "A General Map of the Discoveries of Admiral De Fonte & Others" (8 x 10.75 inches) depicting discoveries in the North Pacific with attention to the supposed Northwest Passage. The map has been described as "a spectacular example of imagination and fiction on the one hand and up-to-date cartography and information on the other" — this latter based on De l'Isle's access in St. Petersburg to secret maps of Russian discoveries, as well as personal experiences on a voyage of Russian exploration (source: Wendt Collection website). There are six or more engraved portraits of eminent men not called for in the volume's list of plates. These are: Hogarth's James Gibbs, (the noted architect); Hogarth's Martin Folkes, (President of the Royal Society); Captain Isaac Schomberg, (famed for his exploits in the American Revolutionary War); Alexander Cruden, (eccentric Biblical scholar); Richard Mead, (physician); and William Dampier, (explorer and natural historian of New Holland). The Negotiations of Count d'Avaux

      A. Millar; D. Wilson; T. Durham, London 1754 - 1754-55. 4 vols. iv, 271, 284, 292, 272 p. A few tiny holes on lower spine in vol. 3 and rear of lower spine on vol. 4. Bookplates of former owner on front pastedowns. Damp stains to front corners of vol. 1. Small ink note on front pastedown of vol. 1. Remains an attractive set. Originally published in French in 1752-53, the work demonstrates France's opposition to William of Orange acquiring the throne of Britain. Count d'Avaux, French ambassador to Holland, conducted "negotiations" to prevent such an event occurring. He failed, for William officially became King in 1689. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dell' origine e fundazion de' seggi di Napoli.

Neapel, Raffaele Gessari, 1754.. 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 301, (13); (4), 40; 8, 84 pp. With engr. title page, 29 small and 9 large armorial woodcuts in the text (two of the latter on half-titles) as well as numerous initials. 19th-c. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to spine.. Second edition, first published in 1644: the history of the Neapolitan "seggi" (seats), i.e., municipal wards or decentralized, neighborhood-based political organizations. "Who one was in Naples was inextricably linked to where one was from. One's residence or affiliation within one of the city's five noble districts (seggio of Capuana, Montagna, Nido, Porto, or Portanova) or its lone popular district (seggio del popolo), as much as one's right of precedence in the order of march in parades and processions, reflected one's status or honor among fellow citizens and one's place in the local social and political structure" (Marino, Becoming Neapolitan, p. 3f.). As the seggi archives in the Archivio di Stato were destroyed during WWII, this text remains one of the principal contemporary accounts of the organization of the seggi. Both early editions being excessively rare, it was reprinted in 2005 by Paolo Piccolo. - Includes, with separate title-pages, "Sopplimento all' apologia del terminio" and "Della varieta della fortuna". The woodcuts show the arms of the various seggi as well as those of the noble families associated with them. - Variously browned throughout due to paper. From the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Chateau de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown. - ICCU NAPE\001235. Cf. Cat. de la Bibliotheque de M. Libri (Paris 1857), no. 5337-5339 (1644 first ed.).

        Oeuvres

First Edition collective. Title pages in red and black. Full calf time scales. Back tooled raised. Parts of titles in red morocco. Caps heads slightly frayed; ditto for 6 caps tail. Upper jaw of volumes II, III, IV, V, VIII, IX and X in part split. Many corners bumped. Most false securities have not been linked in volumes. Despite these shortcomings, a good set of general appearance, decorative. In addition to works of poetry, drama, criticism, fables, various letters can be found in this edition of De La Motte and his famous correspondence with the Duchess of Lambert at the end of his life. We note that he was the author of L'Europe Galante and therefore he introduced three innovations in opera: ballet, and pastoral comedy-ballet. But more than his stories or tragedies, although they had considerable success in their time, it must be remembered, for his critical writing of the place that the author held in the literary life of his time, including in the quarrel between the ancients and moderns, De La Motte having repeatedly defended the use of modern, advocating the use of the theater prose and poetry, suspecting any pre-established rule of straitjacket creation.         Le Palais du silence. Conte Philosophique.

(Dufrenoy, 'Orient romanesque', II, 154. 'France littéraire', I, 84). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

I Liberi Muratori Commedia di Ferling Isac Crens Fratello Operaio della Loggia di Danzica. Dedicata al celebre ed illustre Signore Aldinoro Clog Autore Comico Prestantissimo.

In Libertapoli, l?Anno dell?Era Volgare 1754 e della ristaurazione della Loggia 152. PRIMA EDIZIONE. Axs

        THE SPECTATOR. Carefully corrected.

printed for the Society of Booksellers 1754 Opera completa in otto volumi. Testo inglese. Cm.17,3x10. Pg.2548 complessive. Legature coeve in piena pelle. Piccola marca tipografica incisa in ovale a ciascun frontespizio. Assai esaustiva la descrizione che ne dà la "Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia": "English daily periodical published jointly by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele with occasional contributions from other writers. It succeeded the Tatler, a periodical begun by Steele on Apr. 12, 1709, under the pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff. The Tatler appeared twice weekly until it ended Jan. 2, 1711. The Spectator began Mar. 1, 1711, appearing as a daily, and lasted until Dec. 6, 1712. Valuable as social history, the papers (dated from various London coffeehouses) provide an excellent commentary on the manners, morals, and literature of the day. The Spectator was supposedly written by members of a small club, representing figures of the British middle class: Sir Roger de Coverley (country gentry), Captain Sentry (military), Sir Andrew Freeport (commerce), Will Honeycomb (town), and Mr. Spectator himself. Addison joined Steele in writing the Tatler and continued his collaboration with him, writing about the same number of articles, in the Spectator. Both periodicals had a tremendous influence on public opinion and gave great impetus to the growth of journalism and periodical writing. The Spectator, which was succeeded by the Guardian, was revived for a time by Addison in 1714".

Prima edizione. Opera completa in dieci volumi. Cm.27x19,5. Pg.3804 complessive. Esemplari in barbe. Galassi, Andrea Scacciati, etc. Figure calcografiche nel testo, capilettera e cartigli ornamentali incisi.

Cm.19,8x12,6. Pg.(4), XVI, 392. Legatura in piena pergamena rigida. Tagli spruzzati. Frontespizio impresso in rosso e nero. Dedicato a S.A.R.D.
