Autograph letter in ink, signed L’Abbé Comte de Bernis, dated: Fiesso, 26 June 1754.

      - 2 p. recto & verso, 8vo. Letter written to an unknown recipient while Bernis was French ambassador in Venice (1752 - 1755) acting as mediator between the Republic and Pope Benedict XIV. ‘Your village Sir is very near to mine. Could we not without wounding either politics or prudence see each other once or twice this summer, if you have no objection? I shall find the means; I shall gladly surprise you among your monks, and bring back to my hamlet ideas and graces unknown to it. My master [the Pope] is a very good negotiator. I think that the republic could not do better either for its glory or for its interest than to refer to him. I have had no merit in this affair except that of having pointed out to [?] Madame the confidence of this government ’ On his return to France in 1755 Bernis was made a papal councillor of state, and in 1756 he was created cardinal by Pope Clement XIII. Bernis was French foreign minister during the first phase of the Seven Years War, as a protégé of Madame de Pompadour (1757-58); he spent his final years as chargé d’affaires to the Vatican (1774-94).

Select Fables. By Mr. Charles Denis.

London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, MDCCLIV. [1754] . First edition. Hardcover. Fine. In-8, [frontispiece signed c. Grignion; title-page; dedication to the Prince of Wales (ii); preface (xvii); contents (ix); 448 pages]. Rebound in quarter brown calf, five raised bands, gilt-decorated label, on twentieth century marbled boards. Following in the tradition of LaFontaine, Aesop, and -- if Quintilian is to be believed -- Hesiod, Charles Denis wrote fables that survive the Classical definition: A fable is no more than a moral instruction disguised under the allegory of an action. De La Motte said a fable was an epic poem in miniature, but with more freedom of subject and in the choice of actors. There are 120 fables in this Denis collection, the last was dedicated to His Grace, Thomas, the Archbishop of Canterbury titled The Phoenix and the Owl. First edition. ESTC Cit. No. T101633.

1756, vol. IX, pp. 261-265): "Al Sig. L'Autore dedica ampi capitoli a poesia, musica, satira e balli.         ALS from St. Croix, to the Honorable Ralph Payne, Nevis, July 10, 1754. 'I have not had the pleasure of a line from you since March. I wrote you the 10th April and a few lines since concerning the negro fellow you sent down for sale .'

1754 1754 - 50 lines in a neat hand on 2 sides of single 4to sheet, integral address leaf; stamp causing sm. hole to blank leaf & with a number of tears along folds. A letter from Alexander Cooper to Sir Ralph Payne, Chief Justice of St Kitts, and father of Sir Ralph Payne, 1st Baron Lavington, British politician and governor of the Leeward Islands. Yale University, which holds the papers of Baron Lavington and those of his father, records a co-partnership agreement between Payne (senior) and Alexander Cooper relating to a sugar plantation on the Island of St Croix in the American Virgin Islands. The plantation passed into the possession of Payne's son after the death of both Payne in 1863, and of Cooper sometime between 1860 and 1863. It is apparent from this letter (and others in the Yale archive) that Cooper's role is one of overseer with funds for the plantation provided by Payne. Having last corresponded with Payne in April, Cooper notes in detail the ongoing developments of their plantation, the construction of a boiler house and the cutting and grinding of the crop. 'As the roof was not ready we made a shade over the Coppiss for this crop and began grinding the 10th June, but we had so much rains from the 1st May, which put so great a suring(?) on the canes that from about 5 acres we only made 2 casks bad sugar & 3 casks rum' Evidently with a plantation in development, Cooper bemoans the lack of mules and, more significantly, his dwindling number of slaves: 'had our crop but answered near to what might reasonably be expected of it I should not have had occasion to trouble you for anything but negros, of which indeed we want a great many, as in 3 years time we have lost one more than you have bought for the partnership. Of those two incorrigible runaways, I sent to the Northward(?) I have had accounts that Pero died a few days after his landing there & Joe the other sold for only £13 Sterling .' Worse still, Cooper remarks on the recent and suspicious death of 'the most valuable negro we owned' whom he bought from Mr Shipton for £65 but 'would not have taken double that money for him he was so faithful & useful a negro' The dying man insisted that he had been poisoned and Cooper, after his death, had him 'opened & examined' by two doctors to investigate the truth. To add to the rather forlorn air of Cooper's letter, he finishes by asking for the delivery of 6 more barrels of salt beef and a Lirkin of butter. 'We have had so many workmen since the 6B. [barrels] Beef came down that we have now only a barrel & half remaining, & not a barrel for sale in the Island' In 1754, St Croix was under the ownership of the Danish West Indian Company who purchased it from the French in 1733. With over 50 English families already living on the Island in 1733 and the relative lack of enthusiasm amongst the Danish population to migrate, the planters of St Croix maintained a strong English core. Between 1742 and 1804, 40% of plantation owners were British, with only 23% Danish (Hall, Slave Society in the Danish West Indies).

Chez Briasson, 1754-55., Paris: - 2 volumes in 1 (containing 4 parts). 4to. xx, 38, 124; vi, 78, 27, [1] pp. 53 folding engraved plates, with half-title (1), second part title (2), volume two title (3), second part title (4), head and tail pieces, initial letters. Original full mottled calf, elaborate gilt tooled spine, dark red gilt-stamped spine label; joints starting at extremities, corners worn. Book-label of J.-J. Blaise, Librairie, Paris. Very good copy. Second Edition, but considerably enlarged over the first edition Descriptions et Usages de Plusieurs Nouveaux Microscopes, 1718. This new edition contains more plates and added entomological notes. The remarkable plates show several views of microscopes and related instrumentation and the life forms observed by them, including insects (fly, flea, lice, butterflies, etc.) and marine life, salt crystals, etc. The chief appeal of this edition is the remarkable assortment of beautiful plates featuring the microscopes themselves. Joblot records his observations of many sorts of things including herb soup, rhubarb, mushrooms, grains (rye, oats, Turkish wheat), red worms as found in wells, the water-bug (grasshopper-like). This is of one of the most desirable of eighteenth-century books on microscopy, valued for the lovely engravings devoted to Joblot's microscope, the first French microscopist. The 1718 edition was also the first separate treatise written on protozoology and or microorganisms. It contains the "first experiments ever made to disprove the theory" of spontaneous generation and the first to announce the regular process heat sterilization. â€" Lechevalier. An exceedingly scarce work issued in two parts: the first dealing with the construction of the microscope, and the second with the animalcules studied by the author. "Joblot was the first to carry out experiments on heated infusions to see whether they were capable of producing animalcules." Bullock, The history of bacteriology, pp. 30, 70-71. "The publication of Descriptions established Joblot as the first French microscopist. The first part of the book described several microscopes and their construction and introduced some improvement. Leeuwenhoek had observed the Protozoa previously but Joblot's is the earliest treatise on them." â€" DSB VII, p. 110. The large engraved vignette to each of the volumes and their sections (of which there are 4 vignettes), is believed to be Joblot himself in his laboratory. The plate VI, fig. 12 shows a remarkable curiosity: a mustached "organism" â€" complete with a face! "Bemused infusorian gentleman observed in water sample." â€" See: Nicholas P. Money, The Amoeba in the Room: Lives of the Microbes, p. 42. The Chronology and History of the World, from the Creation to the Year of Christ, 1753; Illustrated in LVI Tables; of which IV are Introductory and include the Centurys prior to the Ist Olympiad; and each of the remaining LII contain in one expanded view, 50 years, or Half a Century.

London: [privately printed], 1754.. [Chronological Tables]. FIRST EDITION. Large folio (45 x 31cm), pp.[16], [34]. With 56 copper engraved tables, some extending over two leaves. Including an introduction and detailed indexes, as well as a formidable list of subscribers including the King and the Prince of Wales. In recent tan quarter calf with raised bands, gilt titles to burgundy label on spine and marbled boards. Tears to the base of plates 17, 18 and 19, near the binding and not affecting text. A few contemporary manuscript additions to the tables, scattered throughout. Very good overall. Beginning with Adam, here born 4004 years before Christ, the first four tables rush through 3200 years, sketching events from the Bible and the Heroic Age of Ancient Greece. Thereafter every year from 800 B.C. to 1753 is recorded in tabular form, with notable events, rulers and other important characters marked out against them. Inevitably, the 'History of the World' refers almost exclusively to Europe. Space is also provided for more information to be added by hand up to the year 1800 (not filled out in this case).

The scholar innocently hounded, tormented and finally plunged into deepest misery by a woman, or the true tale of a not entirely unknown legal scholar from a large and world-famous Hanseatic town, brought to light based on handwritten notes discovered after his death]

Frankfurt und Leipzig: In Commission der Buchnerschen Handlung, 1754. Small octavo (16.8 × 10 cm). Later (late nineteenth-century) half parchment with hand-written title to spine; marbled boards; [3], 78 pp. Few old stains to gutter and some toning; else very good. First and only edition of this anonymously published German erotic novel, which contains possibly the earliest literary depiction of the "dumb blond" stereotype. It precedes the depiction in a 1775 satirical play of Rosalie Duthé (1748-1830), a Parisian courtesan typically cited as the first recorded "stereotypical blonde" in modern history (see, for instance, Joanna Pitman, On Blondes, 2003). The novel's protagonist, Aquilius, a young lawyer from Hamburg, meets Hedwig, a striking beauty, "the most beautiful among blondes," who captivates him immensely. Although he initially mistakes her silence for exhaustion or reticence, Aquilius soon discovers that Hedwig is unable to engage in any sensible conversation and explaims: "the head is beautiful, but it contains no brain" ("Der Kopf ist schön, nur fehlt das Gehirn," p. 43). The novel contains numerous other misogynistic depictions of the many women Aquilius encounters, nearly all of which are depicted as taking advantage of the noble-minded and polite young jurist. Finally, driven into desperation, Aquilius agrees to marry the widow of a lawyer, who drives him to suicide by her controlling and demeaning behavior. Ronald Dietrich cites the text as a particularly interesting case combining the literary theme of the naive scholar with prejudice toward women: "Den Höhepunkt misogyner Darstellung im Zusammenhang mit dem Gelehrten stellt möglicherweise Talinus' 1754 erschienene und bereits im Titel aufschlußreiche Schrift . dar. Hier stößt man nicht von ungefähr auf die vielleicht erste Blondine der Literatur" (Dietrich, Der Gelehrte in der Literatur, p. 184). With the bookplate of the Dutch collector François Gerard Waller (1867-1934), as well as an earlier bookplate of H. Heerdinck, to front pastedown. Hayn/Gotendorf VII, 525 ("very rare"). Bibliotheca Germanorum erotica, p. 133. Rare, with KVK, OCLC locating only the copy at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

Genuine and Impartial Memoirs Of Elizabeth Canning, Containing A complete History of that unfortunate Girl, From her Birth to the Present Time, and Particularly every remarkable Occurrence from The Day of her Absence, January 1, 1753, to the Day of her receiving Sentence, May 30, 1754.

In which is included, The whole Tenor of the Evidence given against, And for her, on her late extraordinary Trial. With some Observations On the Behaviour of the Court, and the Conduct of the Jury. Also Free and Candid Remarks On Sir Crisp Gascoyne's Address. London: Printed for G. Woodfall at Charing-Cross, 1754. 12mo; half-title not called for; final page blank;[i]; A3, B - I, K - N12, O3; recent full natural fine-grain morocco (but probably in fact a brilliant plasticised imitation!), ruled and tooled blind and gilt on spine, brown lettering-piece ruled and lettered gilt; oil-marbled end-papers. Title-page embrowned and with small chip to lower fore-corner; a little scattered light foxing and marking, chiefly of early leaves; a few small corners turned; otherwise, and in general, a nice copy. Very scarce. Probably the First Detective Novel.Despite the unpromising title, a very readable epistolary novel in the manner of Richardson (whose 'Pamela' is mentioned in the text), and an essay in detective fiction precursive in its method of Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Mystery of Mary Roget' - taking as its subject-matter and structural principle the events surrounding the (temporary) disappearance of an eighteen year old girl, Elizabeth Canning, and the subsequent investigations which culminated: first in the trial of a notorious bawd, Mother Wells, and a gypsy, Mary Squires, for robbing and imprisoning her at the former's house in Enfield Wash (an area which seems not greatly to have changed its character in the last quarter millenium or so!); and subsequently in the trial and conviction of the girl herself for perjury. The persona writing the letters claims to have visited the alleged scene of the imprisonment - and other places involved in the development of the story - and also to have interviewed witnesses; but the main part of the novel is concerned with the development and analysis of the evidence, in real time, as it came to be presented through the medium of the pamphlet and newspaper war that surrounded the trials, the statements, depositions, etc. of the principals and witnesses, or at the Court hearings themselves. Most of the documents referred to are presented either in footnotes or in the body of the text (including full transcripts of the two 'Informations' given before Henry Fielding, and witnessed by him in his capacity of magistrate, which are referred to, but not transcribed, in his own pamphlet on the Canning affair). Besides its interest as a novel, and the fact that it is possibly the earliest example in fiction of an analytical method applied to a series of criminous events, it offers the fullest contemporary presentation of the circumstances surrounding these two celebrated trials, and presents a very credible argument for its conclusions. Anonymous as it is, it was advertised at the time as having been compiled by a society in Charge of Canning's case - a statement which should not be taken as meaning her defence. Not in Block, Hubin, or Summers; Raven, 267; ESTC T144508; British Library, Oxford, Wellcome, Cambridge, National Trust, and Leeds copies only on COPAC. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Overall in very good to fine condition. Armorial bookplate of Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, made in England, signed in print with tiny initials W.P.B., and dated 1927. (40 ll.), 363 pp. [p. 191 misnumbered 165]. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of "a Brazilian literary classic" (Borba de Moraes II, 760). According to Wilson Martins, "Os Jubilos da America ... estão literariamente na ponta inicial de um arco cuja ponta final será O Uraguai - ambas as obras ligadas à história do nosso estabelecimento territorial e à fisionomia geográfica do Brasil" (História da inteligência brasileira I, 364). As Borba points out (Período colonial, p. 323), it is not only the individual contributors that make this an interesting volume. Jubilos is also the only publication of a Brazilian academy of this period in which we can see how the academy was founded and how it functioned, by reading the dedication, prologue, the letters to Sequeira e Sá and the program. The work represents, too, a group effort by intellectuals characteristic of their era. Innocêncio believed that almost the entire edition of Jubilos had been sent to Brazil, and Borba comments, "Today very few copies exist. Copies in good condition are rare." This volume was mostly the work of the members of the Academia dos Selectos, founded in Rio de Janeiro. The Academia met only once, on 30 January 1752, to offer congratulations to the Brazilian governor, Gomes Freire de Andrada, on his appointment as head of the Portuguese commission to establish the frontier with Spain in southern Brazil. These pieces in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish include the work of more than thirty Brazilian authors (at least nine of them natives of Brazil), most of whom did not publish works elsewhere. Even the editor admitted that the quality of the works was uneven: "Reconheço que nas obras que produzco a nossa Academia, reluz mas o affectuoso que o Poetico." However, they are invaluable for the study of Brazilian prose and verse of this period, and also important as one of the few published products of the eighteenth-century Brazilian academies. The volume is dedicated to Gomes Freire's brother, José Antonio Freire de Andrada, who funded the publication of Jubilos (see preliminary leaves 2-14). Sequeira e Sá, who wrote the dedication, also composed the prologue to the reader, in which he explains how the Academia was formed (preliminary leaves 15-28). Eight leaves of poems dedicated to Sequeira e Sá follow (preliminary leaves 29-36), all written by natives of Brazil who were studying or teaching at Coimbra; none of these authors had any other works published (see Borba, Período colonial, pp. 319-20 for a list of these authors). The last four preliminary leaves include the index of contributors and the licenses. On pp. 1-46 of the text proper are Sequeira e Sá's letter to the members of the Academia and the replies he received. These replies are especially informative, because each is preceded by a paragraph in italics that states the writer's occupation and literary accomplishments. Next (pp. 47-57) is the program of the Academia, listing the subjects from which the contributors are to choose their themes. Finally, on pp. 59-336, are the poems themselves. Aside from the signed works, this section includes unsigned poems by groups of Jesuits (pp. 133-73), Benedictines (pp. 175-84), Franciscans (pp. 185-88) and Carmelites (pp. 189-91). A final section, which Borba suggests was added as an afterthought (see Período colonial, p. 321), contains more poems in honor of Seqeuira e Sá and some poems on subjects unrelated to Gomes Freire. The contributors to the volume came from various walks of life. Antonio Nunes de Sequeira and Francisco de Faria were both clergymen. Nunes de Sequeira was born at S. Sebastião (Rio de Janeiro) in 1701, and entered the Church after studying law. Known for his composition of poetry and music, he also served as a choirmaster. His only known surviving works are those printed in this volume: a "Romance Lyrico" (pp. 207-09), three sonnets (pp. 210-12), an epigram (p. 213) and a long "Romance" (pp. 339-42). (See Blake I, 272). Francisco de Faria, president of the Academia dos Selectos, contributed two letters (pp. 7-8), an "Oração panegyrico" (pp. 59-88) and a sonnet (p. 130). Faria, born in 1708 at Goiana (Pernambuco), taught at Bahia, but in 1760 was exiled to Lisbon and Rome (see Leite VIII, 216 and Blake II, 438-39). His only other published work is the famous Conclusiones metaphysicas de ente reali ..., Rio de Janeiro, 1747, one of the only three works printed by Antonio Isidoro da Fonseca at the first printing press established in Brazil. (See Borba I, 303). The Jesuit Simão Pereira de Sá, a native of Rio de Janeiro (b. 1701), was Procurador da Coroa e Fazenda for Rio de Janeiro and also a historian. His history of Colonia do Sacramento had received the licenses for publication when Jubilos appeared (see p. 21), but for some reason was not printed until Capistrano de Abreu published part of it in 1900 (see Borba, Período colonial p. 322). The other works by Pereira de Sá mentioned in the Jubilos were apparently unpublished during the author's lifetime; his only appearance in print was with the two sonnets, the "Romance heroico" and two poems to Sequeira e Sá in Jubilos, pp. 285-90 and 343-46. (See Blake VII, 234-35). Antonio Cordeiro da Silva, born at Rio de Janeiro early in the eighteenth century, studied at Coimbra and pursued a military career; by 1752 he was captain of a regiment in Rio de Janeiro (see Blake I, 139). Cordeiro da Silva contributed nine works to this volume (pp. 249-65), including a 29-stanza poem on the military situation of Colonia do Sacramento (pp. 253-62). One of his other poems was published separately: Maria Imaculada, Lisbon 1760 (see Borba II, 798). The only woman author represented in the Jubilos is Angela do Amaral Rangel, "A Ceguinha," born blind at S. Sebastião (Rio de Janeiro) in 1725. As Blake points out (I, 85-86), she lived in an age when no one knew how to give a literary education to the blind. This and the fact that her native tongue was Castilian, rather than Portuguese, made her poetic accomplishments the more remarkable: "Sem educação litteraria, sem cabedal algum de instrucção necessaria al cultivo da poesia, dona Angela do Amaral foi um genio ... " (Blake I, 85). Her only published works are the "Romance" and two sonnets in this volume (pp. 271-75); one of the sonnets was reprinted by Varnhagen in his Florilegio. Angela do Amaral Rangel was not a member of the Academia, although she wrote on the prescribed themes. Mateus Saraiva, president of the Academia dos Felizes (founded in Rio de Janeiro, 1736) contributed a long letter and seen sonnets (pp. 28-32, 230-35 and 305). Not mentioned in the introduction to the letter, although it does appear in the subscription to the sonnets, is the fact that Saraiva was Chief Physician of Rio de Janeiro. He wrote and circulated in manuscript one of several works criticizing João Cardoso de Miranda's Relação cirurgica of 1741. (See Borba II, 573; not in Blake). Manuel Tavares de Sequeira e Sá, the secretary of the Academia dos Selectos and editor of this volume, was trained in law at Coimbra, then served as a magistrate in Portugal and later in Paranaguá (Paraná). He wrote the dedication and prologue of the Jubilos and the final poem in the volume (p. 363), but published no separate works. (See Blake VI, 204; Borba II, 759-60; and Borba, Período colonial, pp. 317-19). Provenance: Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, distinguished Brazilian historian and diplomat of Portuguese ancestry, was a significant book and art collector. He wrote on art and historical subjects, being an expert on the Flemish painter Frans Post: see Frans Post 1612-1680, Amsterdam: A.L. Gendt & Co., 1973, and Frans Post, São Paulo: Civilização Brasileira, 1948. *** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 759-60, and Período colonial 317-23. Innocêncio VI, 116. Sacramento Blake VI, 204.         Heures Nouvelles Contenant Le Petit Office. Dedies a Tres illustre, Tres Populaire et ttres Vertueuse Dame La Duchesse D'Aiguillon Par Son Tres Humble. Serviteur Claude Gaignol [manuscript - manuscrit]

Unpublished, France 1754 - (12.5x19cm) [8] ff 118 [2] Eighteenth century devotional manuscript dedicated to the Duchesse D'Aiguillon, Louise-Felicite de Brehan, who became Duchess when her husband the General and later Secretary of State for War, Emmanuel-Armand De Vignerot Plessis, assumed the Dukedom in 1750. Bound in crimson sheepskin with elaborate gilt decoration and all edges gilt, old adhesive marks to the upper cover; pink silk endpapers with an eighteenth century manuscript bookplate of 'Pelzi Delvev[?]' and on the following blank the armorial bookplate of the early nineteenth century collector Henri-Auguste Brolemann of Lyon (collection dispersed Sotheby's 1926 - later sold at Christies, 22 June 1983, Lot 145). The manuscript is written recto and verso on Dutch 'Blauw' watermarked paper with half a dozen engravings by Claude Duflos after Charles Le Brun tipped in. Written in a mixture of black, blue and gold for initial words, the manuscript is in French and Latin, foliated throughout with each page of text contained within a double ruled panel. The text concludes with a two page Table. This example of a manuscript books of hours is relatively late but conforms to the eighteenth century pattern of dedicating the book to a prominent figure. In this case the Duchesse D'Aiguillon was just reaching the zenith of her influence at the court of Louis XV despite the hostility between her husband and the King who had contrived to steal the young Plessis' lover Marie Anne by sending the young man off on a series of designedly lethal military adventures. Fortunately for the future Duchesse the young man survived the ideal and had a distinguished career which culminated in his assuming the role of Foreign Secretary.

The Philosophical Works of the late Right Honorable Henry St John, Lord Viscount Bolingbroke, in Five Volumes

London, David Mallet, 1754 (first collected octavo edition). Octavo, five volumes; early full polished calf with gilt morocco title-labels on the spines; joints starting to crack, but all of them are very firm; endpapers lightly tanned around the edges by the leather; trifling signs of use and age; an excellent set. Each volume contains the armorial bookplate of A.R. Downer, Sir Alexander 'Alick' Russell Downer (1910-1981), politician and diplomat. He was the Minister for Immigration under Menzies from 1958, and the Australian High Commissioner in London from 1963 to 1972. Henry St John, '1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751) was an English politician, government official and political philosopher. He was a leader of the Tories, and supported the Church of England politically despite his anti-religious views and opposition to theology. In 1715 he supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 which sought to overthrow the new king George I. Escaping to France he became foreign minister for the Pretender. He was attainted for treason, but reversed course and was allowed to return to England in 1723. He is best known as the philosopher of the Country Party' (Wikipedia). The 'Dictionary of National Biography' bears all this out, and more, and has this to say about his works: 'Bolingbroke's philosophical works were published after the deist controversy in England had lost much of its novelty.... [His] works excited only a momentary attention, and are too fragmentary and discursive to be of much value.... Finally, in 1754, Mallet published the collected works ... which add "Substance of some Letters written originally in French about 1720, to M. de Pouilly"; "A Letter occasioned by one of Archbishop Tillotson's Sermons"; "[Four] Essays addressed to Alexander Pope"; "Fragments or Minutes of Essays" ... which, according to Mallet, were sent to Pope as written. This edition was the gun charged against Christianity of Dr. Johnson's famous comment'.

Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia

By R. Adam F.R.S. F.S.A. Architect to the King and to the Queen. Printed for the author MDCCLXIIII. Elephant folio (564 mm tall), contemporary half-calf over marbled papered boards (worn), spine in compartments with simple gilt rule, contrasting morocco title label, pp. [xii]; 34; 61 fine copperplate engravings, many of which are folding and printed on multiple sheets, a short split to plate 18, plate 2 with a marginal water stain not affecting the image, a fine and clean copy. "Robert Adam is today known as one of the foremost practitioners of the neo-classical style of architecture. The son of the architect, builder and entrepreneur William Adam, he undertook the Grand Tour (1754-8) after his university education, though with more constructive ambitions towards the antique than most of his contemporaries. He became acquainted with archaeologists and architects, and designed fantasy buildings based upon what he saw in Rome. The climax of his tour was Dalmatia, which he visited in 1757 in the company of the French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau (1721-1820) and two other draughtsmen. Clérisseau's speciality was in fantasy buildings or actual buildings set in imagined, romantic landscapes, and he was to provide the picturesque views and romanticised images of the palace at Spalato (formerly Spalatro; now Split) for Adam's 'magnum opus'. The publication of large folio volumes of illustrations of the antique was in its heyday, and offered a perfect opportunity for Adam to make his name and challenge his rivals with a magnificent production. Adam took seven years to produce his volume after the visit to Dalmatia, finally publishing it in 1764. The engravings were supplied by Francesco Bartolozzi among others and the publication may be seen as part of Adam's single-minded ambition to establish himself as the leading architect in England as well as Scotland." - Royal Collection Trust website, A fine copy in contemporary binding of one of the great illustrated records of the Grand Tour. Cicognara 3567: 'opera magnifica e grandiosa'; Fowler 2; Harrison pp. 76-81; Millard II, 1.

A Careful and Strict Enquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of that Freedom of Will, which is Supposed to be Essential to Moral Agency, Vertue and Vice, Reward and Punishment, Praise and Blame

Boston: S. Kneeland, 1754. First edition. Rebound to style in full sheep, blind rules, raised bands and a red morocco spine label. Octavo (pages 195 x 114 m), collating: [ii], vi, [iv], 294, [xiv]; complete with the Table of Contents in the front, and the Index and List of Subscribers, in the back. Index with errata slip pasted in. Pages browned, minor soiling and a few early and late leaves dampstained. Overall a Very Good copy of a scarce and important work. The Cambridge History of American Literature devotes a whole chapter to Jonathan Edwards, pointing out that he remains one of the giants of the intellect and one of the enduring masters of religious emotion. It was of this book that Dr. Johnson said "[a]ll theory is against the freedom of the will, all experience for it." Boswell's typical remark was "[t]he only relief I had was to forget it." A very important early American philosophical work. "The most recent generation of scholars has put Edwards back into deeper historical context: as a pastor exemplifying changes in the role of the minister within a socioeconomically evolving community; as a preacher developing the homiletic arts to fit the needs of his audience; and as a thinker engaging with the best European ideas, innovatively synthesizing rationalism and piety in order to transmit the best of the Puritan vision of man's frailty and God's glory into a modern age that found it convenient to ignore both."
