Woodcut device on title & 17 folding engraved plates. 6 p.l., 570, xxii pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled sheep (a few minor scuff marks), spine nicely gilt, contrasting vellum lettering piece on spine. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1754. Third edition, greatly enlarged, of the first exhaustive treatise on the aurora borealis. Mairan attributed the phenomenon to an extension of the sun's atmosphere, which at times enveloped the earth and blended with our atmosphere. "Inquiry into the history and physics of the aurora borealis; the chapter on the relation between the aurora and the magnetic declination is of special interest."-Wheeler Gift Cat. 382. There are many references to Descartes, Newton, Cassini, and Euler. Mairan (1678-1771), while basically a Cartesian, did incorporate some Newtonian ideas in his theories. He was secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences and belonged to the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Uppsala, the St. Petersburg Academy, and the Institute of Bologna. Unusually fine copy. Bookplate of Pierre Sciclounoff, the prominent Geneva lawyer and book collector. ❧ D.S.B., IX, pp. 33-34. See E. Newton Harvey's A History of Luminescence, pp. 258-59 for an excellent discussion.

Catalogue des Livres et Estampes de feu M. De La Haye, Fermier general

Par G. Martin. xii, 396 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G. Martin, 1754. A rare sale catalogue of the library of a Fermier général. According to the Preface by Gabriel Martin, La Haye (1684-1753) was a son of one of the Sécretaires du Roi; he became a Fermier General in 1718 and served in this capacity until his death in 1753 at the age of sixty-nine. He was extremely successful and acquired the Hôtel Lambert from the Marquis du Châtelet in 1745 and lived there in great luxury with a large staff. He formed one of the major collections of paintings of the time and his library was considered to be one of the best when compared to those of his contemporaries. For obvious reasons, the collection was strong in works on finance, French history, and government. The first 3547 lots describe the books, lots 3548-3620 the prints and illustrated books, 3621-3708 maps and atlases, 3709-88 a marvelous collection of engraved and printed music, 3789-97 books ordered by subscription, and 3798-3820 a supplement of books. This is one of twenty-two catalogues by Martin with an index. Fine copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. From the library of Jean Viardot. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions…1643-1830, 115. Lugt 855. Peignot, p. 106.

1754. Fine engraved headpiece (repeated three times) depicting a scientist in his laboratory & 53 folding engraved plates. xx, 38, 124 pp.; vi, 78, 27 pp. Two vols. in one. Large 4to, cont. polished calf (corners very carefully repaired), spine gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. Paris: Briasson, 1754-55. Second edition, greatly enlarged, of the first French book on microscopy (1st ed.: 1718 with the title Descriptions and only 34 plates). Joblot (1645-1723), professor of mathematics at the Ecole nationale des Beaux-Arts, probably became interested in microscopy during the visit of Huygens and Hartsoeker to Paris in 1678 when they demonstrated microscopes brought from Holland. While Joblot's observations were largely limited to protozoa in the first edition, the second edition reflects his study of minerals, plant cross-sections, and insects, illustrated on the plates in the first volume. The charming headpiece, repeated three times, depicts a scientist in his laboratory, surrounded by instruments, specimens, and books. The second volume contains a number of fine plates depicting many new kinds of microscopes and their construction. Joblot "introduced some improvements, including the use of stops (diaphragms) in compound microscopes to correct for chromatic aberration. Joblot designed the first porte loupe, a simple preparation microscope in which the lens is supported by a string of 'Musschenbroek nuts,' forming a ball-and-socket jointed arm."-D.S.B., VII, p. 110. A very handsome copy. Several leaves of the table of contents misbound in the second volume. ? Clay & Court, History of the Microscope, pp. 57-61. Dobell, Leeuwenhoek and his Little Animals, p. 372.

Fine engraved frontis. port. of Klein & 28 engraved plates. 3 p.l. (incl. frontis), 233, [1] pp., one leaf of ads. 8vo, fine cont. polished calf, spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: C.J.B. Bauche, 1754. [bound with]:-. One folding engraved plate. 2 p.l., 108 pp. 8vo. Paris: J.B. Bauche, 1754. I. First edition in French (1st ed., in Latin: Danzig, 1734) and enlarged. This is "one of the earliest monographic treatments of the sea urchins. It includes descriptions, illustrations, and a classification of both recent and fossil sea urchins...Although altered and enlarged, this work was a major source of information on the Echinoidermata for zoologists and paleontologists throughout the eighteenth century and remained a point of departure in discussions by such early nineteenth century authors as James Parkinson."-D.S.B., VII, p. 401. II. First edition in French (1st ed., in Latin: Leipzig, 1743). This work summarizes Klein's feelings about taxonomic methods. His method was based entirely on external characteristics, such as the number and position of limbs and the mouth. He vigorously opposed any method, including the Linnaean system, based on characters not visible externally. Klein (1685-1759), a leading marine zoologist, "had many and diverse interests in natural history besides sea urchins. He developed a botanical garden in Danzig, founded and directed a naturalist's society there, made extensive collections, and published about two dozen monographs, including studies of birds, fishes, reptiles, and invertebrates other than the sea urchins, particularly the mollusks."-D.S.B. The attractive frontispiece depicts Klein standing in front of his natural history cabinet. A very fine and pretty copy.

A treatise of tenures. Containing the original, nature, use, and effect of feudal or common-law tenures.

Dublin: Pr. by Alex. M'Culloh for Sarah Cotter 8vo (19.8 cm, 7.8"). vii, [1], 144, [36 (index)] pp.. 1754 First Irish edition and, notably, printed for a => woman publisher. Sir Geoffrey (also given as Jeffrey or Jeffray) Gilbert (1674?1726), an eminent English judge, became chief baron of the Irish exchequer to the acclaim of all and sundry ? until a case he was hearing put the Irish House of Lords in direct conflict with the British, leading to his brief imprisonment and, though much of the situation was beyond his control, much subsequent blame from the Irish for the passing of the Dependency of Ireland on Great Britain Act of 1719. During his otherwise more fortunate career, Gilbert wrote a number of legal works, none of which were published until after his death but all of which were well-received upon their appearance. This particular treatise was => praised by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1815, and by John Adams; it appears here in its first Irish and third overall edition, following the first of 1730. Contemporary speckled calf, joints reinforced some time ago, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled bands. Pages age-toned and lightly cockled, with mild to moderate offsetting and spotting; last few leaves of index waterstained. One leaf with printing flaw: final words of 10 lines at bottom of page printed out of true. Not pristine, but sturdy and still respectable.

Full time maculato marrone. Tutti i bordi rossi.

Barcelona: Pablo Nadal, 1754. First edition. Quarto, [12ff], 452 pp, [4ff], and errata leaf. Although anonymous, the author is known to be Father Jose Ortega (1700 - 68). A native of Tlaxcala, he was a Jesuit missionary in Narayit province for 30 years; Beristain was the first to describe Fr. Ortega as the definite author of this work, who also wrote a confessional ,a grammar and sermons in the Cora language, as it was among the Coras that he spent most of his life. This book concerns the missionizing of Nayarit, Pimeria Alta, and California (Baja). Pimeria Alta was largely the work of Fr. Kino, and included southern Arizona: for this section, Ortega drew heavily, but not exclusively, on Kino's "Favores Celestiales" (which Prof. Bolton translated in 1919 as "Kino's Historical Memoir of Pimeria Alta). The section on California is taken from Fr. Consag's diary of his trip up the coast as far as the Colorado River, which he entered, and, incidentally, again proved that California was not an island: this diary has also been published. Ortega's work is an important primary source for the Spanish Southwest . "Apostolicos Afanes" was reprinted in 1883 in Mexico with the title "Historia de Nayarit, Sonora, Sinaloa y ambas Californias ..." Scarce work according to Palau. [Wagner Spanish Southwest 407-10: Palau 204880; Beristain iv:57.] Title page expertly repaired; small stain upper inside corner affecting about 100 pp (not affecting text). Marca de fuego on top edge, as yet unidentified. Bound in 19th century dark red morocco, gold floral fillet around edges, raised bands alternating with gilt fleurons, gilt title. Very nice copy of a book that is quite scarce on the market.

Neapel, Raffaele Gessari, 1754.

1754. 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 301, (13); (4), 40; 8, 84 pp. With engr. title page, 29 small and 9 large armorial woodcuts in the text (two of the latter on half-titles) as well as numerous initials. 19th-c. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to spine. Second edition, first published in 1644: the history of the Neapolitan "seggi" (seats), i.e., municipal wards or decentralized, neighborhood-based political organizations. "Who one was in Naples was inextricably linked to where one was from. One's residence or affiliation within one of the city's five noble districts (seggio of Capuana, Montagna, Nido, Porto, or Portanova) or its lone popular district (seggio del popolo), as much as one's right of precedence in the order of march in parades and processions, reflected one's status or honor among fellow citizens and one's place in the local social and political structure" (Marino, Becoming Neapolitan, p. 3f.). As the seggi archives in the Archivio di Stato were destroyed during WWII, this text remains one of the principal contemporary accounts of the organization of the seggi. Both early editions being excessively rare, it was reprinted in 2005 by Paolo Piccolo. - Includes, with separate title-pages, "Sopplimento all' apologia del terminio" and "Della varieta della fortuna". The woodcuts show the arms of the various seggi as well as those of the noble families associated with them. - Variously browned throughout due to paper.
