To George Wakeman Esq, Consul for his Majesty the King of Great Britain, in the Island of Cyprus. This Map of the Island of Cyprus, is Dedicated by his Friend & Servant A. Drummond

London, Willamam Strahan, 1754. 48,5 : 75,0 cm.. Stylianou, A. & J.: The History of the Cartography of Cyprus, No. 177 (fig. 167); Zacharakis 950; Ioannou Collection 76; Bank of Cyprus 53; Papavassilis 95; Navari 129. - Drummonds Zypernkarte Sehr große und seltene Karte von Zypern. Diese sehr detaillierte Karte basiert auf den Erkundungen von Alexander Drummond im Jahr 1745. Drummonds Karte wurde im Jahre 1754 in seinem Reisebericht 'Travels through different cities of Germany, Italy, Greece and several parts of Asia' veröffentlicht. Hervorragende Erhaltung. Alte Faltspuren, da in einem etwas kleineren Buchformat veröffentlicht. - Drummond's map of Cyprus A very large and rare map of Cypus. This detailed map is based on the personal survey of Alexander Drummond during the year 1745. Drummond's map was published in 1754 within his travel report 'Travels through different cities of Germany, Italy, Greece and several parts of Asia'. Drummond has been travelled to Cyprus twice, first in 1745, where he stayed at the house of the British consul George Wakeman in Larnaca, to whom the present map is dedicated. He has tried to correct the mistakes of previous cartographers. Nevertheless Navari mentioned: 'The shape of the map is only marginally better than that of Pococke... Nonetheless, (it) is one of very few produced from personal observations during the Turkish occupation of Cyprus'. Stylianou notes to this map: 'In Cyprus, he was the guest of the British Consul in Larnaca to whom he dedicated the map of Cyprus he compiled during his travels in the island: To George Wakeman Esq.r, Consul for his Magesty the King of Great Britain, in the Island of Cyprus, This Map of the Island of Cyprus is Dedicated by his Friend & Servant A. Dru(m)mond. In the bottom right corner, outside the frame of the map, we have the signature of the engraver: J. S. M. Sculp. [J. S. Müller] Drummond went round the island following almost the same route as Pococke, but he did it the other way round, i.e. clock-wise. He also went across the island from Larneca to Nicosia. He also penetrated as far as the Monastery of Kykko which he marks as Madonna di Chekka. From his writings, it appears that he also had in mind old geographers and cartographers, whom he constantly tries to correct according to his geographical system as he expressly states, often with disastrous results. For example, in his account he remarks, Couclia I substitute in the place of Arsinoe upon the ancient charts and on his map he enters it as Covelia olim Cythera. Having done this, he then proceeds to fix old Paphos at the port of Baffo in his text, as well as on the map, as Paphos Antiqua. Paphos Nova in his text is entered as Baffo on his map, in the position of modern Ktima. In this way he is inferior to Pococke. The shape of the map is an advance on that of Pococke, but a retrogression as compared with the maps in the line of development of Iacomo Franco, Ortelius, Blaeu, Janssonius, Coronelli, although Drummond himself does not think so. From what he writes, he considers himself a better geographer and cartographer than his predecessors. As in the positioning of the places, so in the features of the island, he is constantly trying to correct them. Although his latitude setting the island between 34° 34' and 35° 48' is almost correct, his 35th parallel intersects near Paphos, which is the Ptolemaic positioning. It is pointed out (by the compass on the map) that no allowance is made for the variation of the compas. In the account of his itinerary, he says that he corrected the bay of Limassol and he knows he is right, because my account proceeds from an actual survey, and, I believe, most of my predecessors depended upon hear-say... I took the bearings and distances of everything there inserted ... Which of his predecessors he had here in mind we do not know, but he says that the French Consul showed him a very old charte. In spite of its defects, Drummond's account and his map are worth studying, especially his place-names. He recorded these from the mouth of the people as he heard them, sometimes correctly and sometimes as his English ear perceived them (like Pococke). Examples: Carava, Agios Largos (St. Hilarion), Dela Pays, Ag. Bernaba (St. Barnabas), Lathrangomis, Canakarga, Piscopi, Pisouri, Gierosibon, Imba, Theletra, Palopanaioti (Kalopanayiotis), Scourgodisa, Kalosorgo, etc. A new introduction to the map are the Diamond mines in the Paphos area. His Gierosibon is of cource the present Yeroskipos (Hieros Kepos), the ancient Hierokepia connected with Aphrodite. Unaware of what was hiding under the popular version of the name, Drummond, in his text, places Hierokepia at his Lesata or Mandraka, a few miles before his Gierosibon. He, however, rightly differentiates between Olimpus Mons (Troodos) and Monte Croce or Mamilla Montis Olympi. His route is also marked on the map, which appears to reflect in a way the Roman road system. Drummond's map was further exploited in France as it is evident from two manuscript editions now in the Bibl. Nat. Paris.' . - A very clean and well preserved copy. Very good condition. Evidence of folds as published in a smaller folio.

Chez Joullain 1754 - - Chez Joullain , A Paris _1754, Pet. in folio, relié. Livres à Figures [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

According to the Preface by Gabriel Martin, La Haye (1684-1753) was a son of one of the Sécretaires du Roi; he became a Fermier General in 1718 and served in this capacity until his death in 1753 at the age of sixty-nine. This is one of twenty-two catalogues by Martin with an index. Fine copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. From the library of Jean Viardot. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 115. Lugt 855. Peignot, p. 106. .

        Panurias conquers Acro Corinthos"

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, with modern colour, of Dimitrios Panourgiasitaking Acrokorinthos from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez, and below, sails and naval instruments. The image shows Panourgias at Korinth beside the ruins of the temple of Apollo, directing the forces as they fight the turks coming down from Acrokorinthos in the background. Dimitrios Panourgias 1754-1834 born Dimitrios Xiros in the village of Dremissa, Phocis. On March 24, 1821 he started the Revolution in Salona and later collaborated with Athanasios Diakos and Dyovouniotis in order to halt Omer Vryonis from advancing further into Roumeli. Panourgias with his band was to defend the hills of Chalkomata, near Thermopylae, but was seriously wounded during the fights and had to withdraw. He participated in January, 1822 at the 1st National Assembly at Epidauros as Salona representative and was the most important negotiator during the surrender of Acrocorinth to the Greek forces in 1822. He retired from military operations some months later, after he handed the leadership of his militia band to his son, Nakos Panourgias. Image bright and clean; light spotting to blank borders. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders. Not in Blackmer ,Droulia or Contominas. Philhellenic Acrokorinthos Dimitrios Panourgias

Autograph letter to M. Cabanis, 4pp. folio, discussing the type of knife to be used in a cancer operation

Paris, 1754. Louis, Antoine (1723-92). Autograph draft (probably incomplete) of a letter to Pierre Jean Georges Cabanis (1757-1808). 4pp. N.p., May 18, 1754. 260 x 186 mm. Creased where previously folded, some browning, tiny hole in first leaf not affecting text, otherwise very good. English translation included. From the pioneer French medical jurisprudence authority (see G-M 1730-31) to a medical colleague, discussing the type and size of cutting instrument appropriate for removal of a cancerous tumor in the breast. Cabanis had been involved in a dispute over whether a smaller instrument, such as a lancet, was preferable to the razor recommended by several authorities for such an operation. The Royal Academy of Surgery had asked Louis to give his opinion on this matter, which he did in the present draft. Louis took Cabanis's side in preferring the smaller instrument, citing the writings of Delahaye, Garangeot and Fayet to back his judgment, while noting the opposing opinions of LeDran and Dionis. "When one tries to understand the reasons and the different procedures expounded in the different methods of operating, one sees that the razor and the large knife are recommended only for cutting off the breast with one blow. . . .And if you have the memoirs of the Royal Academy of Surgery, vol. 1, page 681 in the quarto edition, you will read a memoir of M. Fayet of a tumor of the breast, you will see that one must have one's fingers in the incision made and the circumference of the tumor in order to judge the depth, the hardness and the way it is attached, in order to detach the tumor more easily. Since the removal of a cancer is a dissection, where each step is based on what one must do after it and it is the only was to precisely remove the whole body of the tumor, then how can one do this dissection with a large knife which will only serve to cut out, if I dare to speak this way, the cancer with one cut."

The Mock-Patriot, for 1753. To which is added, the Case of John Atherton, Bishop of Waterford in Ireland, who was convicted of Beastiality with a COW and other Creatures, for which he was hang’d at Dublin; with a full Account of his Behaviour after Condemnation, and the Letters he left before his Execution: By N. Barnard dean of Ardagh, at the Command of the Primate of Ireland.

Dublin: Printed London: Re-printed 1754 - slightly browned, more particularly the outer leaves, pp. 52, 8vo, cased in modern beige calf backed buckram boards, book plate of David Arthur Pailin, sound Loosely inserted is a long, and rather amusing, typed letter, apparently from someone in the John Rylands Library, to the former owner of this pamphlet, giving the historical background to it. It relates to the unexpected surplus of revenue to the Irish Parliament in 1753/4 and the subsequent wranglings between Dublin and London as to what should be done with it, and the faction struggle in Ireland that lay behind the manoeuverings. ‘The case of John Atherton’ was first published as ‘The penitent death of a woful sinner, John Atherton’, Dublin, 1641: this is all we have here, in spite of the sensationalism of the title-page (there was a verse The Life and Death of John Atherton - Wing L2000 - which goes into some detail, though without any mention of a COW). The new Preface to The Case here dismisses the idea that reprinting it will ‘Asperse the Episcopal Order.’ (ESTC N40378)

A Collection of Select Cases Relating to Evidence

London - Henry Lintot, for Daniel Brown, 1754 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Theextremely scarce pirated edition of Sir John Strange's case notes, published before the also extremely scarce official edition. Bound in leather with raised bands and blindstamped decoration. Wth a manuscript title page. Reputed to have been compiled by Sir John Strange -ESTC, #T20913. Sir John Strange, d. 1754, was a judge. Before his death Strange had been preparing his collection of reports for publication. Because of his willingness to lend his notes to judges there had been many opportunities for copies of this material, unscrupulously obtained, to pass into the hands of legal hacks. It included summaries and arguments of cases where no judgment had been made. It was Strange's chief concern, therefore, to have ready a definitive compilation of reports of adjudged cases that could be published in the event of any pirating of his work. Accordingly, when some of Strange's case notes did indeed appear shortly after his death under the title of A Collection of Select Cases Relating to Evidence, by a Late Barrister-at-Law, his executors acted swiftly to suppress it -ODNB. Condition: The textblock binding is tight and firm. The hignes are slightly cracked. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing with discoloured marks. Internally the pages have some slight browning and intermittent spots or marks. Overall the condition is very good..
