The History of Sir Charles Grandison in a Series of Letters.

7 volumes. Published from the Originals, By the Editor of Pamela and Clarissa. The Third Edition. Printed for S. Richardson, London 1754. Contemporary full calf bindings, with gilt borders to the boards. Hinges weak (some partly broken) top on spines slightly worn, and a crack to the spine of volume one. It is quite sound, though. Some browning, mostly to the margins. Old names on some of the pastedowns and flyleaves. Still quite an attractive copy.. A very early reprint of Samuelson's last novel. This edition was printed in the same year as the last of the original volumes (first edition 1753-54), and the seventh volume of this copy appears to be first edition, whereas the first six volumes have "The third Edition" printed on the titleleaf. The spine labels simply reads "Grandison" since the work was published anonymously

Account of a Journey from Williamsburg to the French Fort, near the Lake Erie, in Virginia. In The Gentleman's Magazine

London: D. Henry and R. Cave, 1754. 4-page article within the entire June edition of The Gentleman's Magazine. A scarce and important account providing one of the earliest descriptions of 21-year old Major George Washington's famous journey from Williamsburg to deliver a letter from Governor Dinwiddie to the French commandant at Fort Le Boeuf near Lake Erie demanding that the French abandon the area. Published shortly after Washington's journal was printed for the House of Burgesses in February and at the same time as a similar "extract" of the account was published in The London Magazine. This article copies much verbatim from Washington's Journal and includes considerable information about Washington's meetings with potential Indian allies and his arduous return journey by foot and raft in the freezing cold during which he was ambushed by a party of "French Indians." Removed from a bound volume. Tight binding with clean pages. Very light wear.. Newspaper. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Account of American Affairs: Relation of the late action in Virginia and Capitulation with the French. A republication of an account of the Colonel George Washington's Battle at Fort Necessity and his subsequent "Captulation."

London: D. Henry and R. Cave, 1754. 2-page article within the entire September edition of The Gentleman's Magazine. Removed from a bound volume. Tight binding with clean pages. Very light wear. One of the earliest descriptions of the action at Fort Necessity in the Great Meadows of the Ohio which forced Colonel Washington's force of 400 to withdraw. Printed shortly after the first account in the Virginia Gazette. This article (which pre-dates a French account published in the 4 October edition of Le Courrier in Avignon) also includes an English translation of the terms of Washington's capitulation signed in print by the French Commander, Louis Coulon de Villers, that accuses Washington's force of assassinating a French officer (de Villers brother) while he was bearing a diplomatic "citation." Washington's acceptance of these terms, which has been attributed to a poor translation by a Dutch trader who accompanied Washington's force, created a major scandal in both France and England and led directly to the Seven Years War, of which the American French and Indian War was one of the theaters. The English author, Horace Walpole, famously wrote of this event, "The volley fired by a young Virginian in the backwoods of America set the world on fire." . Newspaper. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Engraved vignette on title & 31 folding engraved plates. Title in red & black. vii, [1], 343, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. calf (corners a little bruised with one having a bit of wear), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Göttingen & Leyden: E. Luzac Sons, 1754. First edition of this important book. "In the Recherches, Bonnet grouped five memoirs, all of which were of prime importance for plant biology: He precisely described the characteristics of the nutrition of leaves and of their transpiratory phenomena. Although he did not know the kinds of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) produced and absorbed by green leaves exposed to light, Bonnet made very careful observations on their production. For his masterly experimentation, Bonnet should be considered one of the first naturalists to investigate experimentally the question of photosynthesis. He studied the movement of leaves and discovered the epinastic phenomena; he observed the position of leaves on the axis of the stalk and collected a great many anatomic facts; he returned to experiments on etiolation, on the movement of the sap, and on teratology."-D.S.B., II, p. 286. The handsome plates were engraved by Jacob vander Schley and Wandelaer, who executed the famous anatomical plates of Albinus. A fine and crisp copy. ❧ Pritzel 981. .

A very beautiful and well preserved copy with only minor fowing to a few leaves. Half-title, beautiful engraved frontispiece (a bit ahaved at bottom, where half of the last line of text is cut away - thus not disturbing image, and all text still legible), XXVIII, (1), 435, (1, -errata), (8, -contents) pp.. First edition of the important first French translation of Cumberland's magnum opus, the highly important and influential masterpiece, which not only criticized Hobbes, absorbing and neutralizing many of his insights, but which thus also created a new political and ethical theory, which came to greatly influence later jurists and philosophers of natural law and ethics, e.g. Locke, Pufendorf, Hutcheson, and Shaftesbury, as well as much philosophy of the French Enlightenment. The present work also greatly influenced the understanding and reception of Hobbes in France and affected the French Enlightenment philosophers. "Traité Philosophique des Loix Naturelles", originally published in Latin in 1772, the same year as Pufendorf's "De jure naturae et gentium", constitutes Cumberland's earliest work, published by him at the age of 40. It was immediately read by the greatest of his contemporaries, exercised a great influence and was soon regarded as one of the three greatest works of the modern natural law tradition, together with Grotius' "On the Law of War and Peace" and Pufendorf's "De jurae naturae". In a later work Pufendorf commended the "De legibus" highly, and with its early utilitarian views and its doctrine of the common good as the supreme law of morality, it anticipated and influenced the direction that much ethical thought was to take in the 18th century. "Some of the earliest utilitarian thinkers were the 'theological' utilitarians such as Richard Cumberland (1631-1718) and John Gay (1699-1745). They believed that promoting human happiness was incumbent on us since it was approved by God." (SEP)."His combination of a strong critique of innate ideas and assertion of the moral community with God was a contributing factor in the formation of the kind of empirically based natural providentialism, or natural religious teleology, which soon became the framework or natural law thinking and, indeed, for the mainstream of Enlightenment moral thought." (Haakonssen, Natural Law and Moral Philosophy", p. 51).At the age of 60, the English philosopher and theologian Richard Cumberland (1631 - 1718) was appointed bishop of Peterborough (without having applied for it). Before that, he had been educated at Magdalen College in Cambridge and at the University of Oxford. He studied medicine for some time and then theology, becoming Doctor of Divinity in 1680. In 1658 he became rector of Brampton Ash in Northamptonshire, and in 1661 he became one of the 12 preachers of the university. In 1670 he became rector of All Saints at Stamford. He was known for the great effort and time that he put into his work, and it was not until his late thirties that he found time to finish the major work that he had been working on. Thus in 1672, he published his first work, his magnum opus "De legibus naturae"( "Traité Philosophique des Loix Naturelles"), which became famous for its vast critique of Hobbes - mainly of that which he saw as his egoistic ethics- and for its propounding of utilitarianism. The main purpose of the "De legis naturae" is to refute Hobbes' theories of the constitution of man, morality, origin of society, etc. and to show that the state of nature is not a state of war. According to Cumberland, man's primary end is not self-advantage, and power is not the foundation of society. He puts forth a new doctrine of morality, which is still based on natural law, but which is accompanied by a running criticism of Hobbes' views, which seem to him subversive of religion, morality, and civil society. He sees the law of nature as capable of pointing out that which will promote the common good, and he believes that the law of nature can be inferred by observing physical and mental phenomena. Thus, Cumberland agrees with Hobbes in the attempt to provide a naturalistic account of the normative force of obligation and in the attempt of establishing a rational dictate, but he opposes Hobbes in the way that these can be derived.Another edition of the present work was published simultaneously at Lausanne and Geneva, and it was published again in 1757 in Leyden. The first English translation of the work appeared in 1727, and a new translation into English followed in 1750.Brunet II:442 (only mentioning the present Amsterdam-edition and the 1757 Leyden-edition)
