A Vindication of the Histories of the Old and New Testament. In Answer to the Objections of the late Lord Bolingbroke. In Two Letters to a Young Nobleman. Dublin, printed, London, reprinted for W. Bowyer, and sold by M. Cooper . and George Woodfall, [1752].

      - Rare first part of a work by the Irish bishop Robert Clayton (1695-1758) containing criticisms of DAVID HUME early enough to have been read by GEORGE BERKELEY. Two other parts were published in 1754 and 1757. Clayton's best-known work is An Essay on Spirit (1750). 'In the 1720s Clayton was closely associated with Berkeley and his project to establish a missionary and arts college in Bermuda. Indeed, Clayton seems to have been Berkeley’s second-in-command in the Bermuda project. However, when Clayton was appointed Bishop of Killala and Achonry in 1730 his involvement ceased, although he and Berkeley seem to have remained on friendly terms. At any rate, when Berkeley became Bishop of Cloyne, following the failure of the Bermuda project, it was Clayton who introduced him into the Irish House of Lords . Perhaps the most offensive aspect of Clatyton's Essay on Spirit was that it was known to be the work of a bishop, even though the work remained anonymous until the posthumous edition of 1759. Clayton issued a number of anonymous works in which the theories in the Essay were defended and developed. Probably the most interesting philosophically is Some Thoughts on Self-Love, Innate Ideas, Free Will, etc. Occasioned by reading Mr. Hume’s Works (1753). Clayton was at this time also publishing under his own name a Vindication of the Old and New Testaments, the first part of which, issued in 1752, contains an even earlier critique of Hume. This is of interest since Berkeley may well have read it. If so, then it is probably the best evidence we have that Berkeley knew of Hume or his views' (David Berman in the Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers, Thoemmes Press, 1999).

Mannheim, Nicolas Pierron 1752 - Vogel, Matthaeus [S.J.] Text in fraktur type within line border. With 35 plates designed by Jan Philip van der Schlichten and engraved by P.A. Kilian, and last plate by J. G. Wis[s]ger. Bound in contemporary calf, spine richly gilt, edges gilt; preserved in its original calf slip box; binding and box with a few isolated light traces of worming. Finely illustrated rococo missal in vernacular German presenting the Roman rite as an allegory of the Passion of Christ. The remarkably detailed illustrations by Jan Philips van der Schlichten (1681-1745), court painter of the Elector of Baden, show the different positions taken by the priest and altar boy at each stage of the of ritual and their appropriate ecclesiastical vestments ; each plate has an architectural background of varying richly decorated altar-pieces. Schlichten was a prolific Dutch artist who had moved to Heidelberg in 1720. The plates were engraved by Philipp Andreas Kilian (1714-89), court engraver to Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, excepting the last one, by the Mannheim artist Johann Georg Wis(s)ger (c1722-97). In the present copy plates 33 and 34 were printed out of sequence; this was corrected by the printer by pasting the appropriate version on top of the impression. The compiler was the Jesuit educational writer Vogel; the imperial privilege, dated Mannheim, 8th February 1752, is followed by a preface by Theodor Weber, Father Provincial for the Rhine region. Light traces of usage in a few right margins, otherwise well preserved for a manual of this kind; blank end papers with early 19th century owners’ notes in ink and pencil. A separate impression of the plates with a brief French text was issued from the same press in 1738 with the title Tableaux de la Sainte Messe (36f) - see Lipperheide Oc28, (illustration no 106, but dated 1764).

"In his Treatise on optics Courtivron assailed the Cartesian concept of light and championed the Newtonian. He did not servilely follow Newton, for in his view color results from differences in speed rather than from those in weight. Furthermore, in affirming that dense mediums slow down light corpuscles, he made use of Fermat's principle of least time, recently revived by Maupertuis" (DSB III p. 454). Memoirs of Several Ladies of Great Britain, Who Have Been Celebrated for their Writings or Skill in the Learned Languages Arts and Sciences

Printed by W. Jackson, for the Author, Oxford 1752 - xvii, 472p., [2p., Corrections and Additions], first edition boards in full calf with original red spine leather spine label, raised bands and tooled compartments; an unrestored, unsophisticated copy with these flaws, most notably that the front cover is detached; back board is held soundly by its hinge but joint is cracked. All extremities show old card, rims are gone, much scuffing to calf. Spine label is intact and legible, if dim; the rulings and toolings scuffed but visible; textblock is sound and square and shows shadow of old edge-tinting (but top edge is impacted with dust). Pastedown bears an early 19thC armorial bookplate that in 1960 was augmented in fountain-pen by an heir. The front free endpaper is gone; the next two leaves are blanks adhered together, probably an attempt to strengthen the cover (held to light, we see nothing covered up). Title-page is clean, but this and all preliminaries are lightly dust-soiled, with small smudges opposite the title leaf. Page xvii is slightly creased along the bottom edge (and slightly started) possibly in the bindery. Terminal free endpaper is adhered to a blank, again without appearance of disguise. A handleable copy. Ballard taught himself Saxon while attending to a commonplace day job, caught the attention of Saxon scholar Elizabeth Elstob, subsequently was provided an annuity which allowed him to live in Oxford and use the Bodlean; he became a university beadle. Amongst Ballard's subjects find two mystics: Julian[a] of Norwich, b.1342, and Margery Kempe, b.1373, who dictated what may be the first autobiography in English. Juliana Barnes, b.1388, a writer on heraldry and hunting. Margaret Roper, daughter of Thomas More and Jane Colt: "the first non-royal woman to publish a book she had translated into English." And so on. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Augsburg, Martin Elias Ridinger, 1752. - Oblong folio (450 x 336 mm). Letterpress title page (with extensive description on the reverse) and 4 engraved plates. Contemp. blank wrappers, stored in custom-made cardboard portfolio with giltstamped cover label. First edition. - A fine series of four elaborately decorated Turkish horses, based on drawings prepared in Constantinople and sent to Ridinger by Baron Gudenus. As stated in the letter from Constantinople, dated 7 March 1741 and printed on the reverse of the title page, the Ottoman dignitaries could be distinguished by the various kinds of luxurious cloths, jewels, and finery they applied to their stables. The officials would vie with each other for the most splendid equestrian adornments, often showering their animals with gold and silver, diamonds, silk, and delicate embroideries. At a state reception in 1740, the Sultan was reported to have shown a parade of 30 horses, each covered in a different kind of precious stone. Such a horse laden with ornament, led into the seraglio by a Janissary, is pictured in plate I: four ostrich feathers adorn the head (a distinction afforded only to the Sultan's personal stable), while the chest bears a splendid rosette belt. Plate II shows a rising "Divani", such as is ridden by the Grand Vizier when dressed in state, with silver chains jingling from its halter and an embroidered blanket under the saddle. Plate III shows another Divani (titled "du coté gauche", but a rare variant imprint from front right), with different bridle and blanket; an elaborately tooled gilt thong is strapped across the chest. The final plate IV shows the "cheval de main d'un Pacha" besides a large kiosk, with a long blanket, rich silver and gemstone decoration and two leopard skins. - Some fingerstaining in the margins, but well preserved. Thienemann 594-597. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Vitello pieno periodo biondo. Torna lavorato in rilievo. Parte del titolo in marocchino rosso. Angoli urtato. Buon esemplare.

        The Defense of Poesy

Glasgow: R. Urie, 1752. Handsome early edition of Sir Philip Sidney's Renaissance defense of poetry, in which he argues that the poet has a potentially greater impact on the world than the philosopher or historian: "no other human skill can match him." While philosophers offer abstract precepts that only educated readers can grasp, and historians offer colorful but often uninstructive real-life examples, the great poets combine the power of precept and example to maximum effect, inspiring all those who listen. "Anger, the Stoics said, was a short madness; let but Sophocles bring you Ajax on a stage, killing or whipping sheep and oxen, thinking them the army of Greeks, with their chieftains Agamemnon and Menelaus; and tell me, if you have not a more familiar insight into anger, than finding in the schoolmen his genus and difference?" This 1752 printing is the second separate printing of The Defense of Poesy, preceded by the first edition of 1595; the essay also appeared in collected editions of Sidney's work throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A near-fine example of an English Renaissance classic. Twelvemo, full eighteenth-century calf, spine ruled in gilt, pp. [1-2] 3-106. Ink ownership signature dated 1838 to front free endpaper. Two tiny wormholes; text block resewn at an early date; light occasional foxing; expert repair to binding joints and corners.

Paris: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, 1752. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Together measure 39" x 28". This fine antique map dates to 1752 and depicts Southeast Asia, China, Korea, Japan and the East Indies. The map is in two panels and incredibly detailed with numerous place names labeled, especially in the northern sheet covering China, Korea and Japan. As we move to the southern sheet and the East Indies, these lesser known kingdoms at the time are not densely mapped. Some of the interesting cartographic features include the mapping of the Hokkaido or Jeso, which is all but attached to the mainland and is mis-shaped. Okinawa Island appears to be as large as Taiwan or Formosa. The supposed "ancient seat of the Monguls Empire" is identified. Straits of Singapore are labeled. Singapore Island, although not identified, is noted. New Guinea is mapped in its embryonic state. Overall the map is a wonderful overview of the mapping of this region in the mid-18th century. In good condition with minor wear along the centerfolds. Minor foxing at places and some offsetting. Lower sheet has a repair near the top right margin and a stain in Sumatra. <br><br>Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782) was a French geographer and cartographer whose accurate, research-based work raised the standards for 18th-century map-making. Passionate about maps from his childhood, he created maps during his school years and would go on to publish several atlases during his prolific career. In his early 20's he became the Geographer to the King of France. His accuracy and in depth research would make him one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century.

[15] ff., 324 pp.. 1752 Mining was one of the chief industries of colonial Mexico, and after a century of decline during the 1600s, the 18th century saw a renaissance in ore extraction, chiefly due to new technologies that made it possible to rework old ore and to achieve higher than previously imagined levels of silver and gold extracted from newly mined ore. Berdugo's work, a vade mecum of conversion tables of values for gold of different carats and for silver of different values of purity, was => absolutely essential for all merchants and other business people, and for government workers in the treasury department — for milled coins were the exception in Mexican commerce, cob pieces the norm, and raw gold and silver, including dust, were extremely common. An economic work of which we trace fewer than nine U.S. copies, this was printed by Doña Maria de Rivera with a red and black title-page, and with woodcut arms on the first dedication page. The charming cut of a herald cherub appears after the decima dedicated to the author at the end of the preliminaries. Contemporary full Mexican calf, modestly tooled in gilt and with all edges red; recased, new endpapers. Final two leaves little ragged at edges costing a few letters and with small hole at center and short tears at inner margin; old staining and age-toning/browning throughout. => There is every indication that this well-produced little volume saw time "in the field"!

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1752. FIRST EDITION y. This is an attractively bound copy of Fielding's final novel, the story of the penniless young officer, William Booth, and the virtuous and long-suffering Amelia who runs off with him against her mother's wishes. The two are variously subjected to imprisonment, dire poverty, illicit advances from unscrupulous admirers, and other indignities before it is discovered that Amelia, not her duplicitous sister, is the rightful heiress to the family property. Along the way, Fielding examines various social evils of the time, including the scandals of the prisons and sponging-houses. According to Day, Henry Fielding (1707-54) was "the first English author unashamedly and forthrightly to write novels--that is, imaginary delineations of character and circumstances designed primarily for the understanding of the human situation." Our prior owner was the noted bibliophile and enthusiastic collector of British authors, Robert Hill Taylor (1908-85), who served as president of the Grolier Club, the Keats-Shelley Association of America, and the Bibliographical Society of America, and as chairman of the Council of Fellows of the Pierpont Morgan Library and of the Friends of the Princeton University Library.. 171 x 102 mm. (6 3/4 x 4"). With the terminal blank at the end of volume I and the ads at the end of volume II. Four volumes. FIRST EDITION. Modern tan crushed morocco, raised bands, spines gilt in panels with large fleuron, gilt titling, densely gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Front pastedowns with morocco bookplate of Robert Hill Taylor. Cross III, 321-22; Rothschild 853. A touch of rubbing to corners, one board a little faded across the top, leaves a shade less than bright, with occasional minor foxing or small stains, but an excellent copy, generally clean and fresh in lustrous bindings with very little wear.
