Officium Beatae Mariae Virg. extra Advent. ad vesp. Innsbruck, c. 1750.

1750. Small folio (242 x 304 mm). Latin ms. in red and black ink on sturdy paper. (2), XIII, 117, (5) pp. (and several blanks). With 12 full-page washed and mounted ink drawings. Ruled throughout, with black and red borders surrounding text and illustrations. Contemp. brown calf, covers and spine elaborately giltstamped. Gilt brocade endpapers. All edges gilt. Illustrated late Baroque book of hours, written in clean and regular characters. Apart from its magnificent binding, the volume boasts a remarkable cycle of mariological illustrations. The washed ink drawings are evidently the work of a trained artist whose workmanship were fully abreast with contemporary style and technique (including the occasional Rocaille touches). Especially the elegant treatment of the figures and the fine execution of landscape and details of clothing and interiors suggest one of the more significant mid-18th century Tyrolean painters; the characteristic faces with their pronounced eye areas are so similar to those known from the work of Joseph Adam Ritter von Mölk (1718-94) and his circle that an attribution appears justified. - The dated ms. ownership at the beginning ("Soc. Stae. Ursulae oenipontani 1751") locates this manuscript with the Ursuline monastery at Innsbruck, for whom it was probably drawn up in the first place. The Baroque décor of the monastery and church, founded in 1691, was entirely destroyed in the 19th century. - The magnificent binding shows a double ornamental border and corner fleurons on the covers. Splendid brocade endpapers with large curved scrollwork, blossoms and leaves on red gold background. A unique, near-immaculate specimen.

        Commedia.

Manoscritto cartaceo. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Isles De Saint Domingue ou Hispaniola, et De La Martinique" [with Haiti and special highlight map of Martinique within the print].

[Paris] 1750 - Beautifully Handcoloured Original Engraving (copper). [Paris], 1750. 53 cm wide x 50 cm high. Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c.1723–1786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as "M.Robert", while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel. Sources from the Dépôt de la Marine, the official French repository for maritime-related information, were used for their maps of Canada and South America. Like Ortelius and Mercator, the Vaugondy's credited their sources, which has greatly benefited the study of the history of cartography during that period. (Wikipedia) Sprache: French Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map.

        Pianta della Città di Napoli

Rara.

Large folio,(590x 360mm), later calf backed boards, with 40 fine double-page ( some folding) , engraved maps, some fully coloured, the rest coloured in outline, in fine condition. This atlas includes the scarce first state of this cornerstone map that includes descriptions of the Search for the North West Passage, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It depicts the discoveries of the Russians in 1723, 1732 and 1741, the tracks of Bering's first and second voyages, Joseph Nicolas Delisle's voyage with Capt. Tchirikow in 1741, the track of De Frondat's voyage of 1709, and the route of the Galleons in 1743. More importantly it features the imaginary cartographic theories of Philippe Buache for the first time on a printed map. The west coast of North America is entirely fictitious north of Cap Blanc with an enormous Sea of the West, Lac Valasco, Isle of Bernarda. A network of rivers and lakes making up most of a Northwest Passage is derived from the apocryphal voyages of the Spanish admiral Bartholome de Fonte. A historically important map that was presented as reports to the sciences of Académie des Sciences in 1750 in which Delisle read his memoirs. This extremely rare and important map has been presented by Joseph-Nicolas Delisle to the Académie des Sciences in Paris on the 8 April, 1750. It may not have been published, however, until it was issued in 1752 with the Explication de la carte des nouvelles découvertes au nord de la mer du sud. The original map presented here is based on observations made by Louis Delisle de la Croyère (Joseph-Nicolas's brother), during the Vitus J. Bering Expedition of which Delisle de la Croyère was a member. The map based on the second Bering expedition is certainly the earliest produced outside Russia. The track of Admiral Bartholome de Fonte (Howgego I, F 55) is laid along the coast, omitted in the next issue of the map. Fonte's track demonstrated a possible discovery of the Northwest Passage which many geographers accepted, and many maps of the latter part of the eighteen century display Fonte's alleged discoveries and the vast Sea of the West in the northern part of North America near the northwest coast. Full description and list of maps available.Schwartz/Ehrenberg, pp157-58, pl. 94 (p.161); Wagner, Northwest Coast, p.159. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Nissen 950; Casey Woods p.393; Including many interesting observations, from the Portuguese, the name Barbados means bearded, and probably describes the fig tree filament growth into the soil. In addition to the fig tree, Hughes describes the many uses, including medicinal, of the vegetation found on the island. One such example is the first description of the grapefruit which Hughes called "The Forbidden Fruit". The term yellow fever was also coined by Hughes in this volume, although the association with the mosquito came much later. The cartographer for his book was Thomas Jefferys, the map-maker to George III, and his map of Barbados is shown here. The illustrations were created by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who was renowned for his botanical drawings. Hughes was also the first to describe many of the sites around the island from an archaeological perspective. Portions of Hughes' 1750 publication were incorporated into a book on diseases of the West Indies. Grainger and Moseley reference Hughes' work especially as it applies to symptoms and treatment of diseases he observed while in Barbados. The first publication of scientific research conducted on location in Barbados, it was praised by Carl Linnaeus, Griffith Hughes (bap. 1707, d. 1758?), Church of England clergyman and naturalist. ODNB '... In Barbados, Hughes developed the idea of publishing a book on the island's natural history. In 1743 he visited London with the intention of promoting this work and ingratiated himself with the leading scientists of the day, men such as Sir Hans Sloane and Martin Folkes. Before returning home, he had arranged for the leading artist George Dionysius Ehret to prepare plates for his book. Because his plan was both interesting and ambitious, on Hughes's return to England in 1748 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society as well as receiving his BA and MA degrees from his old college ...'

Maritime composite atlas. Amsterdam, c. 1750.

1750. Uncoloured. 530 x 305 mm. 20 large engraved sea charts, pasted back to back, nineteenth-century half calf. A rare maritime atlas for V.O.C. ships bound for the Far East, published by Johannes van Keulen II, the Dutch East India Company's official map maker and hydrographer during the years 1726-55. This atlas is a fine and rare example to be used on board, including 20 large engraved sea charts, pasted back to back, as typical for on-board use, making them more durable. This atlas also includes the most important celestial chart of the period, the "Stellatum Planisphaerium" of Louis Vlasbloem. The small spheres show the geocentric and heliocentric configurations of the solar system. The expansion of Dutch maritime trade in the Far East provided new astronomical knowledge of the southern hemisphere: twelve new constellations were added to the Ptolemaic canon, making a total of 60. The newly discovered southern constellations include: Pavo, Phoenix, Indus, and others, and Coma Berenices in the north. Celestial navigation was practiced by Chinese and western sailors, and a celestial chart was of the highest importance for navigation. The volume also includes an important and scarce world map, here in its second state with additional privilege. It is on Mercator's projection with only a relatively small number of coastal place names and no interior features or localities at all. After 1682 other general maps were used by Van Keulen, possibly because of the unfamiliarity of Mercator's projection. Shows California as an island and no further coastlines to the north. Includes: 1. Stellatum Planisphaerium 2. Wassende Graade Kaart van Alle Bekende Zeekusten op den Geheelen Aardbodem 3. Pascaerte van't Noordlyckste Deel van Europa 4.         Discourses on tea, sugar, milk, made-wines, spirits, punch, tobacco &c

London: Longman & Millar, 1750. Short, Thomas (ca. 1690-1772). Discourses on tea, sugar, milk, made-wines, spirits, punch, tobacco, &c. with plain and useful rules for gouty people. 8vo. [2], vi, [4], 424, [2]pp. London: T. Longman, A. Millar, 1750. 202 x 122 mm. 18th century marbled boards, rebacked and recornered in calf, light rubbing and soiling. Small marginal wormhole in first few leaves, minor toning, but otherwise very good. First Edition. Scottish physician Thomas Short is best known as the author of the first monograph in English on obesity (see Garrison-Morton.com 7061). The present treatise. published 20 years after Short’s Dissertation on Tea (1730), begins with a discussion on the history, cultivation, preparation and the good / bad effects of tea. This is followed by discourses on sugar, milk, “made-wines” (such as mead, cowslip wine, gooseberry wine, etc.), brandy, rum, arrack, punch, cider, tobacco, malt liquor, and the medicinal benefits of bathing. The work ends with a chapter on gout, a disease which Short claimed “if rightly managed, instead of a punishment and misfortune, is a means to lengthen life, and a sign of strong principles of health” (p. 405).

        Carte des Lacs du Canada

Map taken from the "Histoire General des Voyages " by Prevost. This is an excellent little map depicting the five Great Lakes. While this map uses the same title as Bellin's prototype map of the Great Lakes, published in Charlevoix's Histoire et Description Generale de la Nouvelle France in 1744, it has been updated: Lakes Erie and Ontario are more accurately defined and the spurious islands in Lake Huron have been eliminated. However, there are errors and inaccuracies. Copperplate, in good conditions. Parigi Paris 290 210
