An outstanding, bright and crisp copy with very broad margins. ---- Norman 2265; DSB XIV, p.518-9; Honeyman 3143; Gingerich, Rara Astronomica 53; Hoskin, J. for the History of Astronomy, 1, pp.44-52. RARE FIRST EDITION of this attempt at reconciling religion and science and establishing an understanding of the Milky Way. A book of considerable importance in the history of science. Wright first explained the Milky Way and the nebulae as external galaxies and provided the basis for the theories on the universe by Kant, Herschel and Laplace. Wright, a teacher of navigation and a land surveyor by profession, "hypothesized a 'divine center' of the universe, corresponding to a gravitational center around which the sun and other stars orbited. He also proposed, as a possible explanation for the visual phenomenon of the Milky Way, a model of the universe in which the orbiting stars formed a flattened ring, this hypothesis caused Immanuel Kant, who did not realize that Wright's 'center' was supernatural, to credit Wright with originating a disk-shaped model of the galaxy" (Norman). *The engraved portrait frontispiece is not called for in this work, but is part of Wright's earlier work Clavis coelestis (London, 1742).

Cfr. Barucci-Carpenter 270; Einaudi 4120; Kress 3862. Buon esemplare.

        Produzioni Matematiche

Engraved vignettes on titles depicting the lemniscate & 16 folding engraved plates. xxiv, 528 pp.; xii, 536 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, mid-19th cent. half-vellum & marbled boards (occasional minor stains), entirely uncut. Pesaro: Stamperia Gavelliana, 1750. First edition of a rare work, containing the important collected writings of Fagnano (1682-1766), Italian nobleman and mathematician. Many of the texts printed here appear for the first time. Fagnano's advances in algebra and geometry were very far-reaching and his work on the rectification of the lemniscate made him, according to Legendre, the true founder of the theory of elliptic functions. This breakthrough was of great importance and was employed in the recent proof of Fermat's last theorem. "In algebra Fagnano suggested new methods for the solution of equations of the second, third and fourth degrees. He also organized in a rational manner the knowledge that scientists had of imaginary numbers, establishing for them a special algorithm that was far better than BombeIli's primitive one… "In geometry Fagnano formulated a general theory of geometric proportions that is more noteworthy than the countless writings, published previously, that were intended to illustrate book V of Euclid's Elements. Much more important, however, is his work on the triangle, for which he may well be considered the founder of the geometry of the triangle… "'The most important results achieved by Fagnano, however, were in analytical geometry and in integral calculus."-D.S.B., IV, pp. 515-16. "In his study of the rectification of the lemniscate, Fagnano introduced ingenious analytic transformations that laid the foundation for the theory of elliptic integrals and his work was to lead to elliptic functions. Fagnano collected many of his published works, and a few unpublished ones, and produced the two volume treatise Produzioni matematiche in 1750. In 1751 Euler was asked to examine Produzioni matematiche and he found in this treatise relations between special types of elliptic integrals, that express the length of an arc of a lemniscate, which were quite unexpected to him. Generalising Fagnano's results, Euler went on to create a general theory of these integrals, in particular giving the famous addition formula for elliptic integrals. Fagnano had proved the duplication formula, a particular case of the addition formula, for the integrals… "In fact Fagnano had proved remarkable properties of the lemniscate, including the fact that its arcs may be divided in equal parts using a ruler and compass construction… "Fagnano made many other major contributions but his mathematical work was not without controversy. He was involved in priority disputes with Nicolaus (I) Bernoulli and, not surprisingly, the big dispute of the day which was between the supporters of Newton and those of Leibniz."-The MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive (on-line).

Tome I. Années 1725-1726 ; tome II. Année 1726 ; tome III. Années 1726-1727 ; tome IV et V. Année 1727 ; tome VI. 1727-1728. Très bon exemplaire.

        Traité des Pierres graveés

Finely engraved title-pages, engraved dedication leaf to Louis XV, engraved head- & tail-pieces, & many engravings in the text. Vol. I: two engraved plates & Vol. II: 63 engraved plates. 5 p.l., 468, [2] pp.; 2 p.l., xii, [4], 132 (i.e. 135 leaves incl. 47*, 86*, & 107*); 2 leaves. Two vols. Folio, cont. red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, spines richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: 1750. First edition and a magnificent large set bound in contemporary red morocco; this is a presentation copy from Baron Holbach, inscribed on the free front-endpaper: "This Book I receiv'd from the Baron D'Holbach. Paris - October - 1763." "This is the earliest analytical work on engraved gems and one that fully retains value even today. However, the two volumes are actually two distinct works combined together for the author's convenience as publisher as well as writer. The first volume is by far the most important because of its authoritative summary of the knowledge of engraved gems and that enormously increased in value by its lengthy discourses on previous works published on engraved gems, with a large, nearly exhaustive list of same… "The first volume begins with a history of engraved gems in general, followed by an essay on modern gem engravers and their work, and a large description of the art of engraving, divided into 4 chapters: I. descriptions of gemstones and other stones used in engraved gems, pp. 153-94, i.e., diamond (including its faceted forms with text & a fig of same), ruby, glass, zircon, garnet, emerald, beryl, peridot, chrysolite, topaz, sapphire, amethyst, other quartz varieties, opal, turquoise, malachite, jade, lapis, coral, amber, and ivory. The authorities cited here are mostly Pliny, De Berquen, and De Boodt. II. Lapidary processes, tools, equipment, etc, required to engrave gems and with the famous engraved plate showing an engraver in his atelier, and beneath, diagrams of the engraving head, accessories, and points. III. Falsifications, and IV. Making impressions. The last portion of the first volume, p. 239 to the end, comments on previous writers and engravers of plates for illustrative purposes, as well as the bibliography… "In contrast, the second volume is entirely devoted to descriptions of engraved gems in the cabinet of Louis XV(1710-1774), King of France, and it is this volume that aroused the keenest interest on the part of C. W. King, Antique Gems and Rings, I, 1872, pp. 465-6, who lauds the first volume but criticizes the second, noting that 'the large number of engravings, by Bouchardon [1698-1762], after gems in the royal cabinet, are, however, in too loose and flowing style to give any accurate idea of their originals.' The drawings of the gems were supervised by Comte de Caylus(1692-1765), the noted French art connoisseur and antiquarian."-Sinkankas 4208. The above-mentioned bibliography (pp. 239-468) in Vol. I is an extremely comprehensive and valuable guide (see Peignot, p. 249). Holbach (1723-89), a nobleman of immense wealth and with considerable learning, was the host of a brilliant salon in Paris for many years and a prolific contributor to the Encyclopédie. This richly illustrated work, which contains more than 200 engravings, is in very fine condition. Engraved armorial bookplate of Kirknvall.

        Catalogus Bibliothecae Bunauianae

[Compiled by Johannes Michael Francke]. Engraved vignettes on each title. Three vols. bound in seven. Thick large 4to, cont. half-sheep & paste-paper boards (heads of spines, several joints, & several corners a little worn), spines gilt, red & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. Leipzig: Widow of B.C. Fritsch, 1750-51-52-53-55-56-56. A fine set, compiled by Johann Michael Francke (1717-75); this is an extraordinarily rare and important library catalogue. Ebert has described this as an "unsurpassed masterpiece" and Bogeng called it " the best catalogue of a German eighteenth-century private library." "This catalogue describes the library (42,000 volumes) of Count Heinrich von Bünau, the Saxon statesman and historian (1697-1762). Although it remained unfinished, it is a model of its kind. Three sections were completed, comprising bibliography, 'historia literaria,' ancient authors, universal history, geography, genealogy, heraldry, chronology, and writers on ecclesiastical history. All the same, it was extremely useful. Independent publications, single articles in periodicals, and even bibliographical references to books on special subjects not contained in the library were included. The great J.J. Winckelmann, who was the Count's secretary and librarian from 1748 to 1754, may have had some share in the cataloguing. The bibliographical system of Francke, on which his catalogue is based, was much appreciated. He later became librarian of the Elector's library at Dresden."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 104. Bünau formed his library as an aid to his studies of German history, resulting in his "German Imperial History" (1728-43), which made him one of the founders of modern German historiography. He devised a bibliographical system for his library which Francke (1717-1775) applied to his catalogue. Nice set with the stamp on each title of the city of Augsburg. Occasional foxing due to the quality of the paper. ? Peignot, p. 86-"Cet excellent catalogue…c'est un des monuments bibliographiques les plus curieux. Les titres des livres y sont parfaitement détaillées." Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 114, 119, 127, 182, 186, 197, 207, 227, 228, & 234.

Tenkei Wakumon chukai [trans.: Questions and Answers on Astronomy]

21 double-page and three full-page woodcut astronomical illus. & maps (three with volvelles). 68; 40; 45 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Tokyo: Suharaya, [1750]. First edition in Japanese, translated, revised, and with additional commentary by Irie Osamu (1699-1773), of this important astronomical and geographical text which exercised a profound influence on Japanese astronomy and geography. There was an extremely rare edition printed in China - no copy seems to have survived in its native country - in 1672 (or 1675). The first edition to be printed in Japan, in 1730, was issued in four volumes of which the first three were in Chinese and the supplementary fourth was in Japanese. This edition contains several new maps and there are, for the first time, three volvelles (two with two moving parts and the third with three moving parts). "Irie reprinted the eight original maps and printed revisions of all except the star map of the region of constant invisibility. If the original illustration or explanation was incorrect, he showed a corrected one (or one he thought was correct), basing his revisions on Shibukawa's Tenmon seisho zu."-Miyajima, p. 591. "The Tianjing huowen, brought to Japan about 1672-79, combined ancient Chinese theories, the theories of the natural philosopher Zhu Xi (1130-1200), and the recent philosophical opinions of Fang Yizhi (1611-71) with knowledge that had been obtained from the Jesuits. Although the Tianjing huowen did not receive much attention in China, it was widely available in Japan and inspired many explanatory and critical books, especially after Nishikawa Masayasu (1693-1756) published the first Japanese version in 1730. Of particular importance was its illustration of the stars around the South Pole, which had not been shown on previous celestial maps; the book therefore provided the Japanese with their first knowledge of such stars."--Miyajima, "Japanese Celestial Cartography before the Meiji Period" in History of Cartography, Vol. 2, No. 2, p. 585. This treatise was allowed to be imported into Japan and printed by the censors "because of its purely astronomical nature. Although it is in effect a treatise on Western astronomy, it contains no elements of Christianity. During the Tokugawa period everyone with an interest in astronomy read it."-Nakayama, A History of Japanese Astronomy, p. 101 (& see pp. 101-04). "The Chinese text most influential in Japan was the T'ien-ching huo-wen…authored by Yu I, who studied under the prominent scholar Hsiung Ming-yü, a close friend of the Portuguese Jesuit Manoel Dias (1574-1648)…The T'ien-ching huo-wen was brought to Japan after its first printing in China and was already widely known before the first Japanese reprint appeared in 1730…Very popular among Japanese intellectuals, it was reprinted many times with commentaries and was viewed as a classic in astronomy - partly because of the scarcity of such works."-Sugimoto & Swain, Science & Culture in Traditional Japan, p. 261. Harumi Shibukawa (1639-1715), "one of the greatest astronomers to have lived in Japan" (Miyajima, p. 588), based his knowledge of Western astronomy entirely on the Chinese edition of the present text; he was "especially impressed by its clear explanation, using a geometrical model, of eclipses, which he had never found in Chinese calendrical writings."-D.S.B., XII, p. 404. Tienjing Huowen is partly based on the work of the Jesuit scholars in China, members of the Jesuit missions sent from Rome from the sixteenth century onwards. Matteo Ricci and Ferdinand Verbiest were the most notable of these missionary-scientists who brought western knowledge of astronomy and other disciplines to China. The identification of the South Polar stars, particularly the South Star (sigma Octanis), barely visible to the naked eye and sitting directly overhead the Earth's South Pole, is important. Knowing its location is the key to understanding the workings of all the stars of the Southern Hemisphere since it is the South Star that these stars circle every night. This information is crucial for navigation and map-making. The geographical maps are of particular interest: four separate maps form a double-hemisphere world map, including a southern hemisphere with a very distinctively shaped Australia joined to a southern continent. The celestial and world maps here are entirely based on the work of Ricci and Verbiest. A very fine and fresh set, preserved in a box. ? D.S.B., XV, p. 733.

        Works of Rabelais

1750 - RABELAIS, Francois. The Works of Francis Rabelais, M.D. Formerly translated by Sir Thomas Urquart, M.D". Since carefully revised, and compared throughout with M. le du Chat's edition, by Mr. Ozell. London: John Hart, 1750. Five volumes. 12mo, 19th-century full brown morocco, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $1850.Early edition of the first English translation of Rabelais, the first edition with the set of 28 copperplate engravings (24 folding), very handsomely bound."Though an English version of Gargantua was licensed in 1592, and was probably then issued, no translation of Rabelais is extant prior to Urquhart's of 1653". In point of style Urquhart was Rabelais incarnate, and in his employment of the verbal resources, whether of science and pseudo-science or slang, he almost surpassed Rabelais himself" (DNB). "This translation has been called "˜one of the most perfect transfusions of an author from one language into another that ever man accomplished" (Pforzheimer 814). Rabelais "is often censured for his lapses into gross indecency and his physiological and medical obscenities. These may be explained partly as the work of an irrepressible jester writing for a coarse, outspoken society". His work incensed the theologians and was condemned by the parlement. He issued a revised edition of the first two books, attenuating his insulting references to the theologians, but it failed to placate the Sorbonne and both books were again condemned". Moliere drew on him, Voltaire and Balzac imitated him, but many have censured his obscenity" (Reid, 509-10). Bookplates, early owner signatures.Plates and text clean and fine, with only one tear along fold line to one plate (IV:135). Bindings very handsome. A desirable set of an esteemed translation.       1750. Large 8vo. 1 p. With autogr. address. To Mr. Joyne "in Lambe Buildinge in the Inner Temple, London": "I heartily condole with you on the unhappy Death of your Brother. These villanies must necessarily increase yearly more + more, while the lower People are made mad by those intoxicating Drams, which by a consummate folly are held in great Profusion to the mouth of the meanest. A temptation well known to be too great to be resisted. As I guess that the tenants will make you some Payments about this Time, And as I have a considerable Sum to pay in London to charitable users, It will save the hazard of carrying money to + fro. [I]f you can make me a payment Soon, at Mr Grimes's next the Star Inne in the Strand over against Hungerford market, where on notice I will leave a Receipt. I am Sir your humble Servant [...]". - The botanist and inventor Hales ist considered one of the pioneers of modern physiology.         The Spirit of Laws.

London: for J. Nourse, and P. Vaillant,, 1750. Translated from the French ? With Corrections and Additions communicated by the Author. 2 volumes, octavo (203 x 123 mm). Contemporary calf, spines with raised bands, morocco labels renewed, sprinkled edges. Contemporary ownership inscription Thomas Preston to front free endpaper of each volume, engraved armorial bookplate of Mansfield Price LLD to each title verso. Spine ends and joints professionally repaired, some surface wear, spine labels renewed to style; occasional light spotting and the odd mark; a very fine set. First English edition. One of the central texts in the history of 18th-century thought, L'Esprit des Loix was a huge influence both on English law, especially as mediated by William Blackstone, and on those who framed the American Constitution. Blackstone's Commentaries, Hamilton's Federalist Papers and Tocqueville's Democracy in America are all thoroughly imbued with Montesquieu's theories. In particular, Montesquieu is credited with the idea that the powers of government should be separated and balanced in order to guarantee the freedom of the individual, a key concept in the creation of the US Constitution. No English language edition was published in America until 1802. The translation is by the prolific Irish-born author and skilful translator of works mostly from the French Thomas Nugent (c.1700?1772).

The first edition, comprised of the first volume, was published in 1748. Pine-Coffin, British and American Travel to Italy, 740: and see A Dictionary of British and Irish Travellers in Italy, 1701-1800, compiled by John Ingamells (Yale University Press, 1997). Some light foxing and wear; slight worming in three signatures of volume one, without loss; very good copy.. 2 vols, 4to, contemporary calf rebacked, red morocco labels, gilt rules and lettering. 13 plates (nine folding) and two vignettes of Roman coins. The informative letters of James Russel (1720-1763), a young and learned Englishman who lived in Italy 1740-1763, where he copied master paintings, dealt in antiquities, gave tours to visiting British travelers, and closely observed his surroundings, which he writes about in entertaining style. The letters discuss other famous travelers of the time as they pass through Rome, current Roman events (including a poem on the death of one Pope and election of another), classical quotations translated, copies of inscriptions; and they generally function as an erudite travel guide. The letters are mostly written to Russel's father, Richard Russel (1685-1756), the noted editor of the Grub Street Journal, who also published them.

Emblems of Love, In four Languages, Dedicated to the Ladies by Ph. Ayres Esq.,

12mo, 90 ff. [n.n.], engraved throughout, rebound to style in half calf, spine gilt ruled with label and raised bands, marbled boards,The work first appeared in its English version, in a slightly different format, in 1683, entitled "Cupid's Addresse to the Ladies . . ."; another edition, much as this, was published in 1712. In this version, the engraved pictorial title-page (engraved by J. Nicholls), is followed by an introductory sonnet: "Cupid to Chloe Weeping," succeeded by the 44 engraved emblematic plates and accompanying explanatory verse in English, Latin, French, and Italian.
