Torah, nevi'im u-khetuvim. Biblia hebraica sine punctis. Accurante Nath. Forster.

Late as the date may seem for it, this is the first separate edition of the Hebrew Bible printed in England, preceded only by the printing of the text as part of the Walton Polyglot. Editor Nathaniel Forster (1718-57), an accomplished scholar of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, has included (in the style of the table of contents) "Pentateuchus, Prophetae priores, Prophetae posteriores, Hagiographa"; the leaves following "Prophetae posteriores" are separately signed and printed "Vol. 2." Based on Van der Hoogh's version, the text is in Hebrew, with titles and chapter heads also in Latin. There were two issues of this, a large paper issue and the common paper issue, of which this is one of the latter.Unlike most 18th-century books printed at Oxford, this is scarce. ESTC locates only seven U.S. holding libraries (one of which has deaccessioned its copy) and WorldCat locates three additional library copies (one of which has also been deaccessioned). Of the eight reported copies still actually in libraries four are in the Northeast, two in California, one at Duke, and one in Ohio. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released).

[Manuscript on paper] Tractatus De Contractibus in Specie [inscription inside front cover: "Codex 3e Matutinus" (sic)

s.n. (France), 1750 (ca.). 4to. (225 x 175 mm). [336] pp. = 168 unnumbered ff., all but one bearing densely written cursive handwritten text. 14 quires of 12 sheets, with curious quire numberings: the second leaf bears the signature AM, BM, CM, DM (etc.) through OM. Original "temporary" marbled boards, sewn on 4 double-bands and 2 half-bands, original flyleaves. Highly curious, apparently unpublished legal manuscript of high quality. There can be little doubt that the manuscript was carefully written in a fine cursive hand by an erudite legal scholar in training. Extending more than 300 pages, the manuscript covers legal issues concerning the many forms of contracts, promised gifts, leases, deposits, loans and the profits of usury, purchases, records, exchanges, codicils, legates, etc. At the end are 5 pages of Questions which provide a fascinating record of Law School in France in the mid-18th century. The watermark is quite clear and can be identified as a type of Gaudriault No. 734 (datable to 1750). This manuscript is suitable for research and exhibition, and merits considerable scholarly inquiry.

Paris: Les Auteurs, Boudet, 1750. Engraved map with old handcolouring, 515 x 685 mm. A fine map of the East Indian islands and the Philippines, including the Malay Peninsula, the Kingdoms of Cambodia, Cochin China, and Tonkin, and an inset of the or Marianas Islands. The north coast of Australia (Nouvelle Hollande) is shown with the place names Van Diemen Landt, Baia van Diemens, Vuyle Hoeck and Cocotvils Eylandt. An ornate scroll and foliage cartouche enhances the appeal of this attractive map by Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy, the Parisian geographers, who were among the leading French cartographers of the time. They were both appointed Géographes du Roi. This map was originally published as part of their Atlas Universel, which was issued in 1755 with 108 maps.         Inventaire des remédes contenus dans la cassette.

(vers 1750). Très bel exemplaire.***** Very well bound manuscript, a companion volume for a crate of bottle of remedies, wrote by a physician, probably Antoine Sidobre, a doctor of Louis XV. In-8. [184 x 110 mm] Collation : (156) pp. Maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs orné, grande dentelle d'encadrement sur les plats, tranches dorées. (Reliure de l'époque.).

PERU Ð PAITA / PIRATES: ÒPLAN DE LA VILLE DE PAITA DANS LE ROYAUME DE SANTA Fƒ SITUƒE PAR LA LATTITUDE DE 5D. 12Õ DU SUD.Ó

[France circa ] 1750 - Manuscript, pen and ink and watercolour on fine laid paper with watermark of ÔEtivalÕ (of Strasbourg), (Very Good, exquisite watercolour, some old, professional restoration to small area along border near upper right corner with tiny area re-done in facsimile) 23 x 36.5 cm (9 x 14.5 inches). A highly attractive contemporary manuscript copy of the famous map of the key port of Paita, Peru, from George AnsonÕs account of his Circumnavigation of the globe, during which his men attacked Paita in a dramatic piratical raid in 1741. This attractive manuscript map depicts the strategic port town of Paita, Peru, as it was recorded by British privateers (or pirates, depending on your point of view!) serving under Commodore George Anson, after they raided and burned the town during a dramatic night-time assault on November 12/13, 1741. Paita had been a prized target for British privateers / pirates from the 16th to the 18th Centuries. Located on a fine natural harbour in the Piura region of northernmost Peru, it was a key waypoint for treasure ships laden with Andean silver and gold heading from Callao (Lima) to Acapulco. The difficult currents in that part of the Pacific ensured that it was the only viable intermediate stopping point on the entire run, such that treasure ships were often docked in the port for several days while re-provisioning. The townÕs Customs House was also known to consistently hold treasure on an interim basis, in the same manner as bank does today. During the War of JenkinsÕs Ear (1739-48), which pitted Britain against Spain, the British aimed to cripple Spanish maritime trade and gain phenomenal riches by conducting a series of pirate-like raids on Spanish New World ports. Inspired by the historical exploits of Sir Francis Drake (who had raided Paita in 1579!) and Sir Henry Morgan, and recently by Admiral Edward VernonÕs 1739 seizure of Portobello, Panama, Commodore George Anson (1697 - 1762) vowed to mount a piratical expedition that would top them all. While Anson was, in many ways, a shambolic commander, he was both extraordinarily lucky and driven, and during his Circumnavigation of the globe (1740-4), he caused much havoc to the Spanish, taking extraordinary plunder. Setting out from England with six ships and crew of 1,854 men, he sailed around Cape Horn and proceeded to prey on the Spanish shipping off of the coast of Chile and Peru. Anson wisely split up his fleet to cover more territory. He specifically targeted Paita and sent one of his vessels, the Gloucester, up to the waters off of Northern Peru with specific orders to remain far enough off shore so as not to be sighted - the advantage of surprise was paramount in maritime raids of ports. Helpfully, the Gloucester had recently captured a Spanish ship, and one of the resulting prisoners was an Irishman, long in Spanish service, who was familiar with Paita, and who agreed to give the British mariners useful intelligence. Worryingly, however, the Irishman also informed them that a Spanish ship had recently sighted the Gloucester and that Paita was now on an alert footing. The British had to attack quickly, lest the Paita garrison receive re-enforcements, so rendering the raid impossible. On the night of November 12, 1741, the Gloucester sailed near Paita and dispatched a raiding party of 60 men (noted on the map erroneously as 49 men) in two pinnaces. Turning to the map, the British raiding party landed at point ÔAÕ, on the far right, on what was the western edge of the town (the map is orientated with the south at the top). Spanish sentries spotted the attackers and raised an alarm; however, the defenders proved to be surprisingly disorganized and ill-prepared. The British moved to secure the area around ÔFÕ the CustomÕs House (where the treasure was stored) and moved to neutralize to the fort, at point ÔBÕ in the centre of town. This proved easy, as most the Spaniards had taken flight to the hills. The British soon captured the fort and the Governor

Kanor, conte traduit du Sauvage, par Madame **.

Amsterdam: n.p. 1750. Duodecimo, a very good copy in contemporary French mottled calf; owner's gilt stamp 'Mr. GILLY' on front cover. First edition: a delightful fantasy set in Brazil (but not recorded by Borba de Moraes the bibliographer of Brazil).Despite her fame as the writer of several volumes of fairy tales and fables, little is known about Fagnan's life beyond the fact that she died in France around the year 1770. Kanor purports to be a translation from an ancient and very rare manuscript, chronicling two tribes living on the banks of the Amazon, and their tribulations when the Kanor people fantastically shrink to a uniform six inches, and the Alzopha grow to eight or nine feet. Unexpectedly, they all live happily ever after, and Fagnan allows herself the luxury of a moral: 'le veritable Amour fait des miracles'. Joints neatly repaired.

Folio: [4],vii,[13],250,*251-*254,251-314,[20]pp, complete with 30 full-page copper-engraved plates, many after Georg Dionysius Ehret (1710-1770); folding map of Barbados by Thomas Jeffreys (c.1719-1771), geographer to George III; large engraved headpieces (including 'A Prospect of Bridge-Town in the Island of Barbadoes') and woodcut tailpieces and initials; list of subscribers and a slip containing errata to that list pasted to verso of p.vii (as called for in the large-paper issue, but without the final errata leaf found in the ordinary paper issue). Faded ink stamp of Lehigh University library, dated 1884, with manuscript deaccession note to top of title page (but no other library marks anywhere). Offsetting from plates; occasional light foxing or spotting, with somewhat stronger foxing to pp. 4-25 and *251-3 and plates 2 and 3. Withal, an excellent copy. Sitwell (Great Flower Books), p.60. Hunt 536. Nissen BBI 950. Sabin 33582. Wood (McGill), p.393. Calmann, Ehret: Flower Painter Extraordinary, p.67. Near Fine ¶ Hughes was rector of St. Lucy's parish in Barbados when he observed firsthand or collected reports from the field from "Persons of known Veracity" of every specimen described in his natural history. The work is primarily devoted to the island's botany and dendrology?of its twelve 'books', or chapters (not ten as stated on the title page), eight are dedicated to trees, shrubs, and plants, ordered according to physical appearance: Nuciferous (nut-bearing), Pomiferous (fruit-bearing), Pruniferous (bearing plum-like fruit), and the like. Hughes provides a physical description of each plant, followed by notes on the edibility of the fruit or nuts and its uses. Also included is a seven-page glossary of "Botanical and Technical Terms," supplied largely by "the accurate Mr. Miller of Chelsea" (presumably Philip Miller, foreman of the Chelsea Physic Garden). Among its many original contributions, the book is credited as the first to describe grapefruit and to coin the term 'yellow fever,' although the link to the mosquito came much later. Many of the finely engraved plates, which include depictions of palm trees, bananas, a pineapple, the male and female Pawpaw, some fishes and crustacea, are after drawings by one of the greatest 18th-century botanical painters, G. D. Ehret (Hunt speculates that a number of the unsigned plates may also be by or after Ehret). Each of the 30 plate is dedicated to a different patron or subscriber and includes an engraved coat of arms of the aristocratic or scholarly dedicatee. N. B.         "Isles De Saint Domingue ou Hispaniola, et De La Martinique" [with Haiti and special highlight map of Martinique within the print].

, 1750. [Paris], 1750. Beautifully Handcoloured Original Engraving (copper). 53 cm wide x 50 cm high. Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688?1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c.1723?1786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century.nIn 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.nnGilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as "M.Robert", while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name.nnThe Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel. Sources from the Dépôt de la Marine, the official French repository for maritime-related information, were used for their maps of Canada and South America.nnLike Ortelius and Mercator, the Vaugondy's credited their sources, which has greatly benefited the study of the history of cartography during that period. Provenance: Lurley Manor and Fort Hill (bookplates to front pastedown); collection of Dr. Gerald Sugarman. Overall, a near fine copy of this impressive text. ----NLM/Blake 102; Heirs of Hippocrates 468 (1st ed.); Garrison-M. 385.1; Choulant 252f. - Second Latin edition (first published in 1739). "With this work, first published in English in 1698, Cowper provided one of the better-known stories of theft in medical history. Of the 114 plates in this collection, only nine were original with Cowper. All of the others were the work of Bidloo and were published in his Anatomia Humani Corporis in 1685. Cowper obtained three hundred sets of Bidloo's plates, pasted his own name over that of Bidloo on the title page, made a few corrections in ink, added nine plates of his own, translated the text into English, and published the whole under his own name. Bidloo, naturally incensed over this plagiarism, arraigned Cowper before the Royal Society, and the two engaged in an exchange of polemical writings." (Heirs of Hippocrates, discussing the first Latin edition of 1739). Very Good.

        Scienza della Natura Generale.

Venice: Battista Recurti, 1750. Two volumes, quarto, with a total of 62 plates (including three letterpress tables numbered in series), contemporary full vellum with gilt lettered labels. Well-preserved compendium of articles on science and technology, including a splendid array of engraved plates illustrating many different aspects of eighteenth-century science. 'Illustrations of particular interest are those of units of measurement, the pendulum, electrostatical machines, the pointing of mortar, the compressed air-gun, the refraction of light rays, and chyliferous vessels in man. In short Scienza della Natura presents a complete and ordered picture of the state of scientific knowledge in its time' (DSB).Giovanni della Torre (c. 1710-1782) was a prominent teacher of natural science and physics at Italian universities. A man of varied pursuits, della Torre is remembered for his improvement and simplification of the microscope, and as the author of a later separately published book on volcanoes derived from personal observations of Mount Vesuvius in the Bay of Naples.Written during a period when the teaching of science in Italian institutions was increasingly influenced by Newtonian physics, these books combine the older discursive style of natural philosophy with new rigorous experimental approaches. In Scienza della Natura Generale we encounter a curious hybrid of ancient learning within an enthusiastic, and highly rational, environment of experimental science. The scope of these books is considerable, encompassing physics and the natural sciences, as well as anatomy and other subjects. This diversity of subject material is reflected in the large number of engraved plates. Illustrations include hydraulic and pneumatic experiments, vacuum pumps and chambers, centrifuges, and similar physics projects. The design of microscopes, telescopes, and other optical instruments are likewise illustrated in some detail over several plates (interestingly, the anatomical plates include microscopic views of cells and alveoli of the lungs). One curious engraving presents an innovative diving bell suspended from a sailing vessel, presumably for collecting treasure and salvage from the seafloor. A fine set.

Text and tables printed within frames. First edition of a remarkable 18th-century work that laid the foundations for the first French school of critical historical science, especially its branch of chronology. This work contains a collection of charters and sources for the general history as well as for the (local an general) church history. The aim of the work is to accurately date a wide range of historical events, as early as the Greek, Roman periods, by using a series of chronological tables. At the same time, the work is also a guide for the correct use of these charters in studying history. The work was originally begun by the Maurus Dantine. Due to illness, he was however forced to leave the final completion to other members of his order, Charles Clémencet and Ursin Durand. The extra leaf of the first volume is paginated xv-xvi and contains the table of Contents of both volumes. The Corrections and Additions on pp. 711 - 714, followed by the Index on pp. 715 - 726, and finally the Directions fro teh Binder on the last leaf. Inevitably small damages to both bindings: top and foot of spine slightly damaged, corners bumped with some damges to the leather covering some of these, but altogether well-bound and well-kept exceptionally splendid bindings.       - Blake, p. 168; BMN I, p. 160; STCN (4 copies); cf. Broman, The transformation of German academic medicine, 1750-1820 (2002), p. 82. First edition of one of the most widely used pathology textbooks, treating general pathological issues, such as nature, causes, and consequences of disease. It is written by the German-born physician Hieronymus David Gaub (1705-1780), a student of Boerhaave and his successor at Leiden. "Gaub hung his notion of disease on his conception of physiology. Accordingly, he spent a considerable portion of the book cataloguing the changes to which the body's solid and fluid parts are susceptible. Gaub presented other traditional topics from pathology as well, including an overview of the various categories of causes of disease " (Broman). Soon after the work's appearance in 1758 it was followed by several other editions.Heavily browned throughout, but otherwise still good. Binding somewhat soiled and the slightly damaged at the top of the spine, otherwise sound.

Letters from a young painter abroad to his friends in England.

Printed for W. Russel 1750 - 2 vols., with 13 engraved plates, 5 folding, a few illustrations in the text, 1 gathering in vol. ii foxed, pp. viii287, [5], xii, 394, [8], 8vo, 19th-century calf, somewhat crudely rebacked and recornered, sound. Second edition of vol. i (first 1748, with no vol. ii), vol. ii without edition statement. James Russel was an English [?or Scottish] artist and antiquary who lived in Rome between 1740 and 1763. At one time he was among the foremost ciceroni in Italy. His patrons included Richard Mead and Edward Holdsworth. Andrew Lumisden, the Secretary to the Young Pretender, wrote that Russel was his 'ingenious friend'. Despite his centrality to the British Grand Tour community of the mid eighteenth century, scholars have virtually ignored him. Instead, they favor his fellow artists, such as Robert Adam and William Chambers, and other antiquaries, such as Thomas Jenkins, James Byres, and Gavin Hamilton. Nevertheless, Russel's career gives insight into the British community in Italy at the dawn of the golden age of the Grand Tour. His struggles as an artist reveal the conditions in which the young tyros laboured. His rise to prominence broadens what we know about both the British and Italian artistic communities in eighteenth-century Rome. And, his network of patrons reveals some of the familial and political connections that were necessary for social success in eighteenth-century Britain. In fact, the experience of James Russel reveals the importance of seeing Grand Tourist and expatriate communities as extensions of domestic social networks. Like eighteenth-century sailors who went to sea, these travelers lived in a world apart that was nevertheless intimately connected to life at home' (Jason M. Kelly, on-line: Prof. Kelly is editing Russel's unpublished letters for the Walpole Society). (Pine-Coffin 740(1))

      - S.l., L'an 1000 700 50 [i.e. 1750]. Vrin). "One of Bruno's main works and that of his works which proved to be most influential throughout the 18th and 19th c., profoundly affecting both science, philosophy and religion" (B. Copenhaver & Ch. Schmitt, ‘Renaissance Philosophy’, p.301-302). (Brunet I, 1298. Caillet, 11295. Peignot, ‘Livres condamnés au feu’, I, 48 et II, 213. Salvestrini, 'Bibliografia di G. Bruno’, 112).         PERU – PAITA / PIRATES: "PLAN DE LA VILLE DE PAITA DANS LE ROYAUME DE SANTA FÉ SITUÉE PAR LA LATTITUDE DE 5D. 12’ DU SUD."

[France circa ] 1750 - Manuscript, pen and ink and watercolour on fine laid paper with watermark of ‘Etival’ (of Strasbourg), (Very Good, exquisite watercolour, some old, professional restoration to small area along border near upper right corner with tiny area re-done in facsimile) 23 x 36.5 cm (9 x 14.5 inches). A highly attractive contemporary manuscript copy of the famous map of the key port of Paita, Peru, from George Anson’s account of his Circumnavigation of the globe, during which his men attacked Paita in a dramatic piratical raid in 1741. The town’s Customs House was also known to consistently hold treasure on an interim basis, in the same manner as bank does today. During the War of Jenkins’s Ear (1739-48), which pitted Britain against Spain, the British aimed to cripple Spanish maritime trade and gain phenomenal riches by conducting a series of pirate-like raids on Spanish New World ports. Inspired by the historical exploits of Sir Francis Drake (who had raided Paita in 1579!) and Sir Henry Morgan, and recently by Admiral Edward Vernon’s 1739 seizure of Portobello, Panama, Commodore George Anson (1697 - 1762) vowed to mount a piratical expedition that would top them all. Turning to the map, the British raiding party landed at point ‘A’, on the far right, on what was the western edge of the town (the map is orientated with the south at the top). Spanish sentries spotted the attackers and raised an alarm; however, the defenders proved to be surprisingly disorganized and ill-prepared. The British moved to secure the area around ‘F’ the Custom’s House (where the treasure was stored) and moved to neutralize to the fort, at point ‘B’ in the centre of town. This proved easy, as most the Spaniards had taken flight to the hills. The British soon captured the fort and the Governor
