Christoph JakobTrew, a physician and botanist, had for a number of years been an admirer of Ehret's work. Ehret, a brilliant botanical artist, was unrivalled in his ability to "achieve realism, majesty, ineffable colour, all in one breathtaking look." (Hunt). Born in Heidelberg in 1710, he originally worked as a gardener and practised drawing in his spare time. His artistic abilities led him to the service of a Regensburg banker named Leskenkohl, and it was during this period that Trew met Ehret. Trew was to remain a friend and patron of Ehret's throughout his life, and by 1742, the germ of what was to become the present publication was already under discussion when Trew wrote to Christian Thran in Carlsruhe "Every year I receive some beautifully painted exotic plants [by Ehret] and have already more than one hundred of them...." Ehret moved to London in the late 1730s, where he painted the recently introduced exotics at the Chelsea Physic Garden and established himself as a teacher of flower-painting and botany. Discussions about the projected work continued by letter until 1748, when Johann Jacob Haid from Augsburg agreed to produce the engravings from Ehret's drawings. This apparently unrecorded issue, bearing the imprint of the Augsburg print-publisher Johan Jakob Haid and his son Johann Elias Haid, is a re-issue of the plates which first appeared in 1729 with the signature of Jacob Wangner and the imprint of the heirs of Jeremias Wolff. OCLC locates a single copy of the Wolff issue, at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (photographs of the engravings are reproduced in the BnF online catalogue, which misspells the artist’s name as “Wagner”). Wangner’s engravings were based on the almost equally rare suite of six plates after Watteau, commissioned by Jean Julienne and engraved by Crépy fils (Louis Crépy) in 1728. For the present issue the engraver’s signatures (barely visible in the BnF images) were removed.& & The title appears at the foot of the first plate. Each engraving presents a central figure or scene set within a frame of delicate rococo allegorical and ornamental design. Three show the Comédie italienne figures of Pierrot/Gilles, Harlequin, and ?Columbina (a woman playing the lute) on a rug-bedecked stage, a pair of allegorical figures flanking an awning above, and at bottom the smiling visage of a Commedia dell’Arte character of the opposite sex. The remaining pastoral scenes of courtship or douceur de vie are set within naturalistic elements, two with streams flowing over a dripping shell-shaped basin or ledge under which a ghostly face can be dimly discerned. & & Two painted screens based on these designs were sold at Sotheby’s London, on Feb. 12 2008, and again on 28 Oct. 2010, with the addition of a third painting from the series).& & I locate no other copies of the issue with the Haid imprint. Giovanni Lorenzo Berti (Johannes Laurentius Berti) (1696-1766) was an Italian Augustinian theologian.The General of the Order of Hermits of St. Augustine, Schiaffinati, instructed him to write a book, to be used by all the students of the Order, expounding the whole of Augustine of Hippo's thought and particularly his doctrine of grace and free will. His huge ''Opus de Theologicis Disciplinis'' expounded not the private views of a theologian, but those of the Augustinian Order and therefore had a semi-official status in the Catholic Church. He was denounced to the Holy Office as a Jansenist by two French bishops. In December 1750 Pope Benedict XIV wrote a letter to one of them saying that the work had been submitted to competent theologians who had judged it to be sound; to the other he wrote a letter in May 1751 saying that nothing had been found in his work contrary to any decision of the Church. He subsequently occupied important offices in his order, i.e. those of general secretary, prefect of the Angelica (the former valuable library of the Augustinians at Rome), general assistant. He first taught philosophy, then theology, at Sienna, Florence, Bologna, Padua, Rome, and finally (1748) became professor of ecclesiastical history at Pisa. He suffered, in 1762, a stroke of apoplexy which was repeated and eventually caused his death. His literary career was an agitated one. By order of Father Schiaffinatti, his Superior General, he wrote the extensive work "De Theologicis Disciplinis" (Rome, 1739-45), an exposition of the theological teaching of St. Augustine. The book, which appeared in several editions, was vehemently attacked by d'Ise de Saléon (who was successively Bishop of Agen, 1730-35, Bishop of Rodez, 1735-46, and Archbishop of Vienne, 1747-51) and by Languet de Gergy, Archbishop of Sens (1731-53). They accused Berti of Jansenism. In answer, the latter published: (1) "Augustinianum Systema de Gratiâ" (Rome, 1747; Munich, 1750); (2) "In Opusculum" (Leghorn, 1756). The accusations against Berti were submitted to the Roman authorities. Benedict XIV (1740-58) had his book examined and found its teaching sound. Besides other works published in this controversy, Berti wrote: (1) "Commentarius de Rebus gestis S. Augustini" (Venice, 1756); (2) "S. Augustini Quaestionum de Scientiâ . . . . dilucidatio" (Pisa, 1756); (3) "De Haeresibus Trium Priorum Saeculorum" (Bassano, 1769); (4) "Historia Ecclesiastica" (Florence, 1753), an ecclesiastical history, which he later published in an abridged form (Pisa, 1760), and which, thus shortened, was frequently re-edited (recently at Turin, 1892). A very fine eighteenth-century map depicting all of North America, by one of France's greatest cartographers This highly attractive map depicts North America during an especially fascinating time in its history, the period immediately before the Seven Year's War. The British Thirteen Colonies hug the Atlantic seaboard, while the immense Gallic empire, embracing both New France (Canada) and Louisiana (the Mississippi Basin) occupy the majority of the interior of the continent. This highly detailed map labels numerous native villages and European forts in the interior of the continent. Spanish Mexico reaches all the way north to modern-day Colorado, and Baja California is shown accurately to be a peninsula, and not an island as previously thought. The Pacific Northwest remains entirely enigmatic, labelled as the "Terres Inconnues." The map also depicts the islands of the Caribbean, which are shown to be in the possession of the various European powers. Vaugondy consulted several sources in devising his map including Bellin's excellent rendering of the Great Lakes, and Guillame De L'Isle's and Jean-Baptiste D'Anville's maps of the Mississippi Basin. The composition is graced by an elegant title cartouche featuring a waterfall inhabited by a cayman, and framed by coulisses of palm trees accompanied by native Americans. This map was included as one of the most important maps in Vaugondy's celebrated Atlas Universel, which was first published in 1757. A very fine image from the work described by Dunthorne as 'one of the finest records of the cultivated flowers of the period' and by Blunt (p. 166) as 'one of the most decorative florilegia of the mid-eighteenth century.' A complete copy of this work sold for almost $1,000,000 in London in 2002. The great characteristic of this beautiful plate, from Trew's Hortus Nitidissimus, is the way in which the watercolour and bodycolour painting almost entirely eclipses the engraved lines. Although the work was actually started by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762), the engravings were based on the collection of flower drawings owned by the botanist and bibliophile Christoph Trew, a distinguished physician of Nuremberg. Georg Ehret (1708-1770), who enjoyed Trew's patronage from 1732 and traveled widely on his behalf before settling in London in 1736, produced the designs for 40 of the eventual total of 188 plates. The remainder were drawn up by a team of local artists, including J.C. Keller, Professor of Drawing at Erlangen University, the court painter Nikolaus Eisenberger, and A.L. Wirsing. Cf. (Folio 41*26 cm) (ESTC T147028. Nissen 950. Sabin 33582. Hunt 536) Hughes, (bap. 1707, d. 1758?), Church of England clergyman and naturalist, published 4 Welsh books in America. Whilst in Barbados, Hughes developed the idea of publishing a book on the island's natural history. In 1743 he visited London with the intention of promoting this work and ingratiated himself with the leading scientists of the day, men such as Sir Hans Sloane and Martin Folkes. Before returning home, he had arranged for the leading artist George Dionysius Ehret to prepare plates for his book. See ODNB.

Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked to style with smooth gilt spine with red morocco lettering-pieces and green morocco numbering-pieces, marbled boards, vellum tips. With advert leaf at end of Vol. I. Quire H, vol. II, shorter at foot and evidently supplied or trimmed at an early date, probably at the time of first binding. Boards a little rubbed, the occasional trivial mark internally, but an excellent copy. First English edition. One of the central texts in the history of 18th-century thought, L'Esprit des Loix was a huge influence both on English law, especially as mediated by William Blackstone, and on those who framed the American Constitution. Blackstone's Commentaries, Hamilton's Federalist Papers and Tocqueville's Democracy in America are all thoroughly imbued with Montesquieu's theories. In particular, Montesquieu is credited with the idea that the powers of government should be separated and balanced in order to guarantee the freedom of the individual, a key concept in the creation of the US Constitution. No English language edition was published in America until 1802. The translation is by the prolific Irish-born author and skilful translator of works mostly from the French Thomas Nugent (c.1700–1772).

Thick large 4to, cont. half-sheep & paste-paper boards (heads of spines, several joints, & several corners a little worn), spines gilt, red & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. Leipzig: Widow of B.C. Fritsch, 1750-51-52-53-55-56-56. A fine set, compiled by Johann Michael Francke (1717-75); this is an extraordinarily rare and important library catalogue. Ebert has described this as an "unsurpassed masterpiece" and Bogeng called it " the best catalogue of a German eighteenth-century private library." "This catalogue describes the library (42,000 volumes) of Count Heinrich von Bünau, the Saxon statesman and historian (1697-1762). Although it remained unfinished, it is a model of its kind. Three sections were completed, comprising bibliography, 'historia literaria,' ancient authors, universal history, geography, genealogy, heraldry, chronology, and writers on ecclesiastical history. All the same, it was extremely useful. Independent publications, single articles in periodicals, and even bibliographical references to books on special subjects not contained in the library were included. The great J.J. Winckelmann, who was the Count's secretary and librarian from 1748 to 1754, may have had some share in the cataloguing. The bibliographical system of Francke, on which his catalogue is based, was much appreciated. He later became librarian of the Elector's library at Dresden."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 104. Bünau formed his library as an aid to his studies of German history, resulting in his "German Imperial History" (1728-43), which made him one of the founders of modern German historiography. He devised a bibliographical system for his library which Francke (1717-1775) applied to his catalogue. Nice set with the stamp on each title of the city of Augsburg. A spectacularly oversized example, with vast margins, of the scarce large-paper issue of perhaps the most important botanical work on Barbados, a book to "place beside Catesby's Natural History" (Hunt), sumptuously produced and beautifully illustrated. Folio: [4], vii, [13], 250, *251-*254, 251-314, [20]pp, complete with 30 full-page copper-engraved plates, many after Georg Dionysius Ehret (1710-1770); folding map of Barbados by Thomas Jeffreys (c.1719-1771), Geographer to King George III; several large engraved headpieces (including 'A Prospect of Bridge-Town in the Island of Barbadoes') and woodcut tailpieces and initials; list of subscribers and a slip containing errata to that list pasted to verso of p.vii (as called for in the Large Paper issue, but without the final errata leaf found in the ordinary paper issue). Rebound to style in three-quarter brown sheep over marbled boards, spine with six raised bands blind-tooled in compartments, original morocco gilt lettering piece laid down. Title page and several preliminary leaves with margins browned and edges expertly strengthened with Japanese tissue. Repaired closed tear to bottom margin of dedication leaf (not affecting text). Offsetting from plates; occasional light foxing or spotting, with somewhat stronger foxing to pp. 4-25 and *251-3 and plates 2 and 3. An excellent copy. Provenance: faded ink stamp of Lehigh University library, dated 1884, with manuscript deaccession note to top of title page (no other library marks anywhere!). Small round former owner's stamp with a monogram 'MB.' The zoological and botanical plates are each dedicated to a patron or subscriber.& Hughes was rector of St. Lucy's parish in Barbados when he observed firsthand or collected reports from the field from "Persons of known Veracity" of every specimen described in his natural history. The work is primarily devoted to the island's botany and dendrology—of its twelve 'books', or chapters (not ten as stated on the title page), eight are dedicated to trees, shrubs, and plants, ordered into chapters according to physical appearance: Nuciferous (nut-bearing), Pomiferous (fruit-bearing), Pruniferous (bearing plum-like fruit), and the like. Hughes provides a physical description of each plant, followed by notes on the edibility of the fruit or nuts and its uses. Also included is a seven-page glossary of "Botanical and Technical Terms," supplied largely by "the accurate Mr. Miller of Chelsea" (presumably Philip Miller, author and foreman of the Chelsea Physic Garden). Among its many original contributions, the book is credited as the first to describe grapefruit and to coin the term 'yellow fever,' although the link to the mosquito came much later. Many of the finely engraved plates, which include depictions of palm trees, bananas, a pineapple, the male and female Pawpaw, some fishes and crustacea, are after drawings by one of the greatest 18th-century botanical painters, G. D. Ehret (Hunt speculates that a number of the unsigned plates may also be by or after Ehret). Each of the 30 plate is dedicated to a different patron and includes an engraved dedication with a coat of arms of the aristocratic or scholarly dedicatee.

        Tienjing Huowen [Questions and answers on astronomy]

      Japan,: circa, 1750.. Three volumes, small quarto; xylographically printed on folded sheets of Japanese paper, with 21 double-page and three full-page astronomical illustrations and maps, including three complete working volvelles; some light spotting, minor marginal worming to a few leaves in volumes 2 and 3; a near-fine set, sewn in the Japanese manner in original tan wrappers, printed paper labels a bit worn; in a modern slip case. Very rare: a classic and important astronomical and geographical text. This early treatise, deriving from a Chinese original, incorporates knowledge of the astronomy of the South Polar region and was the seminal work that 'provided the Japanese with their first knowledge of such stars...' (Kazuhiko Miyajima, "Japanese Celestial Cartography" in History of Cartography II, pp. 584 ff. & 592). A Chinese edition of 1675 is impossibly rare; the text was brought to Japan in the 1670s and the first Japanese edition appeared in 1730 with the present edition following around 1750. It was to have considerable influence on the development of Japanese astronomy, and particularly the work of Shibukawa Harumi: 'in his references to Western theory, Harumi based his information exclusively on "T'ien-ching huo-wen", by Yu I... Harumi was especially impressed by its clear explanation, using a geometrical model of eclipses, which he had never found in Chinese calendrical writings...' (DSB).Tienjing Huowen or "Questions and answers on astronomy" is partly based on the work of the Jesuit scholars in China, members of the Jesuit missions sent from Rome from the sixteenth century onwards. Matteo Ricci and Ferdinand Verbiest were the most notable of these missionary-scientists who brought western knowledge of astronomy and other disciplines to China. This flow of knowledge from west to east illustrates the pivotal role the Jesuit missionaries played in bridging the far-flung intellectual zones of Rome, China and Japan throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.The book combines western science with ancient Chinese theory as expounded by the philosopher Zhu Xi (1130-1200), along with later opinions of Fang Yizhi (1611-71), with the astronomical and cartographic findings of Ricci and Verbiest. The identification of the South Polar stars, particularly the South Star (sigma Octanis), barely visible to the naked eye and sitting directly overhead the Earth's South Pole, is important. Knowing its location is the key to understanding the workings of all the stars of the Southern Hemisphere since it is the South Star that these stars circle every night. This information is crucial for navigation, and map making. The geographical maps are of particular interest: four separate maps form a double-hemisphere world map, including a southern hemisphere with a very distinctively shaped Australia (illustrated opposite) joined to a southern continent.The celestial and world maps here are entirely based on the work of Ricci and Verbiest. The Italian-born Matteo Ricci was the first Jesuit to arrive in China, in 1583. Appointed as court mathematician, he worked over the next twenty-seven years making western developments in mathematics available to the Chinese. He introduced trigonometric and astronomical instruments; he translated the first six books of Euclid into Chinese and is still remembered in China today for his contribution to astronomical knowledge. 'Probably no European name of past centuries is so well known in China as that of Li-ma-teu (Ricci Matteo)...' (Encyclopedia Britannica). He also published the first maps of China ever available to the West. The Flemish-born Ferdinand Verbiest, Ricci's successor, also a Jesuit scholar, was highly efficient in the use of astronomical instruments as well as in in map making, and was fluent in Chinese. 'From about 1600 until the suppression in 1773, Jesuits were practically the sole source of Chinese knowledge about Western astronomy, geometry and trigonometry. Appointments in the Astronomical Bureau provided the Jesuits with access to the ruling elite...' (Highet, The Art of Teaching). Verbiest became director of the Beijing observatory, and a close friend of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) who required maps of his empire and the world beyond.DSB, XII, 404 & XV, 733; M.
