        MEMENTO MORI

1750. 1750 - Highly finished preparatory design for a fresco or tapestry connected to the Albani family, whose coat of arms appears under the left-hand arch crowned with a cardinal’s hat. Under the central arch of the drawing, preceded by a palafreniero, four servants in blue and white livery carry a red baldacchino that covers two figures processing on horseback. One is clearly a secular prince, with his garland crown and red cape, while the other figure is a cardinal wearing a black hat and a red robe. It is possible that the cardinal depicted is either Annibale (1682-1751) or Alessandro (1692-1779) Albani, or their nephew Cardinal Giovan Francesco Albani II (1720-1803). Under the right arch of the fictive architecture, two buildings appear. While three commedia dell’arte figures, who are commonly associated with the Venetian carnevale, appear, the carriage in the background contradicts the possibility that the setting for this event is Venice. Below these three arches, a series of nine crests appear. The personification of death reclines with his scythe behind the coat of arms of the Corsini family (blue and yellow diagonal stripes with a white band through the center). The crown, which signified the rank of the family, has been wrenched off. (The Corsini were made dukes by Urban VIII in the seventeenth century and princes by Clement XII in 1730) This act of vandalism fits well within the long history of enmity between the Corsini and Albani families in the papal court. We have been unable to connect the sheet to a specific project at any Albani residence, but future research should consider the Villa Castelbarco Albani in Vaprio d’Adda, northeast of Milan, whose documentation has proved difficult to obtain. * DBI s.v.

An Apology for the Life of Mr. Bampfylde-Moore Carew, Commonly call'd the King of the Beggars .

Printed for R. Goadby and W. Owen [1750?], London - Hardcover, 8vo. xx + iv + 240pp. Old calf, neatly rebacked, with gilt stamped title label between raised bands. Contemporary (?) previous owner's name neatly inked on fore-edge, pages somewhat darkened, but still a very nice, clean copy. The full title reads: An Apology for the Life of Mr. Bampfylde-Moore Carew, Commonly call'd the King of the Beggars; Being an impartial account of his life, from his leaving Tiverton School, at the age of Fifteen, and entering into a Society of Gypsies to the present time; wherein the motives of his conduct will be explained, and the great number of characters and shapes he has appeared in through Great Britain, Ireland and Several other places of Europe be related, with his travels twice through great part of America. A particular account of the Original, Government, Language, Laws and Customs of the Gypsies; their method of electing their King, & c. And a parallel drawn after the manner of Plutarch between Mr. Bampfylde-Moore Carew and Mr. Thomas Jones. Bampfylde Moore, King of the gypsies, was born in July 1693, at Bickley, near Tiverton, where his father was the rector. Following some youthful misadventure he fled home and joined a band of gypsies, beginning a long career as a swindler of great ingenuity. He lived a time in Newfoundland, before returning to England where he married, and, on the death of the famed Gypsy leader Clause Patch, was appointed as "king of the gipsies." He was eventually convicted of vagrancy and transported to Maryland, from where he eventually escaped to Pennsylvania. He continued his artful deceits throughout North America, before returning again to England, and thence to Scotland. He supposedly accompanied the Pretender to Carlisle, and continued, as ever, with his extraordinary deceits and rogueries. He is thought to have died in 1770. Authorship of the book is variously attributed to Robert Goadby or Carew's wife. Some copies of the book are said to have had a frontis-piece, in our experience this was only the later editions, and we have not seen one of this vintage with one. A very nice copy. 'Second Edition with Considerable additions.' [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Lilio - Narcussus IV; Guernsey-lily (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving drawn by Georg Ehret and executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Matted and ready for framing. From Christoph Trew's magnificent HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS OMNEM PER ANNUM SUPERBIENS FLORIBUS published in three volumes over a 36 year period from 1750-1786. Painted in a more opaque gouache to resemble a painting rather than the traditional practice of using translucent water-colours that allowed more of the engraving to show through. Each piece was meant to capture the flower at the peak of it's beauty instead of focusing solely on scientific detail. Ehret contributed 44 of the 180 illustrations in the entire work and is the single most important botanical artist of the era. HORTUS NITIDISSIMUS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.

Diz. Biogr. Treccani: ". Pi tardi Venanzio Monaldini ripubblic˜ 38 incisioni del Bellavia, raccogliendole in un volume dal titolo: 'Pensieri diversi lineati et intagliati d'Anibale Caracci. Si vendono presso V. Monaldini'. A tutti i pezzi il Monaldini aggiunse le lettere "A.C. IN.". An Account of Sir Isaac Newtons Philosophical Discoveries in Four Books

A Millar, UK 1750 - 2nd Edition 1750. This is a study of Newton’s discoveries, written by a friend and disciple. Maclaurin (1698-1746), was the greatest of the 18th-century writers on fluxions after Newton; his Treatise on Fluxions (1742) has been described as the earliest logical and systematic publication of the Newtonian methods. Newton had great respect for Maclaurin’s mathematical abilities, and he personally recommended him for a professorship at the University of Edinburgh. Some time after Newton died in 1727 John Conduitt asked [Scottish mathematician Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746)] to collaborate in the writing of his biography; the project lost momentum with Conduitt's death in 1737 but MacLaurin continued with his part in it and the work was published posthumously in 1748 as "An Account of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophical Discoveries." **** MacLaurin discusses Newton's method of investigation and of 'philosophizing', as well as his discoveries, and begins with a long history of natural philosophy since the ancients, in which he again asserts the importance for religion of sound natural philosophy. Though a number of other general expositions of Newton's thought were published during the eighteenth century, MacLaurin's Account has long been recognized as the leading authoritative statement of mainstream Newtonianism. As with his prize-winning Treatise on Percussion of 1724, one of the priorities of his Account was to combat the rival natural philosophy promulgated by the followers of Leibniz" Bound in full leather. 6 folding paltes. Book is very good++ with a nice modern binding. 30% page loss to last page and corner loss to contents. Worm hole effecting a number of pages. Both effecting text.

Paris 1750 - Hind 11 (4th State, First Paris Edition)John Wilton-Ely 173The watermarks that is present is difficult to determine due to the heavy inkFrom the important series "Veduta de Roma"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etchings. San Fr [Attributes: First Edition]

Pintado a mano, 63,5 x 45,8 cm, bello ejemplar. This is the scarce first state of this cornerstone map of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It depicts the discoveries of the Russians in 1723, 1732 and 1741, the tracks of Bering's first and second voyages, Joseph Nicolas Delisle's voyage with Capt. Tchirikow in 1741, the track of De Frondat's voyage of 1709, and the route of the Galleons in 1743. But more importantly it features the imaginary cartographic theories of Philippe Buache for the first time on a printed map. The west coast of North America is entirely fictitious north of Cap Blanc with an enormous Sea of the West, Lac Valasco, Isle of Bernarda. A network of rivers and lakes making up most of a Northwest Passage is derived from the apocryphal voyages of the Spanish admiral Bartholome de Fonte. A historically important map that was presented as reports to the sciences of Academie's DES in 1750 in which Delisle read his memories. A very agreeable example of DeZauche's edition, circa published 1780. Hand painted, beautiful copy. This extremely rare and important map have been presented by Joseph-Nicolas Delisle to the Academie des Sciences in Paris on the 8 April, 1750. It may not have been published, however, until it was issued in 1752 with the Explication de la carte des nouvelles decouvertes au nord de la mer sud. A commentary account of 18 pages which is accompanying the map is unfortunately missing here. The original map presented here is based on observations made by Louis Delisle de la Croyére (Joseph-Nicolas’s brother), during the Vitus J. Bering Expedition of which Delisle de la Croyére was a member. The map based on the second Bering expedition is certainly the earliest produced outside Russia. The track of Admiral Bartholome de Fonte (Howgego I, F 55) is laid along the coast, omitted in the next issue of the map. Fonte’s track should demonstrate a possible discovery of the Northwest Passage which many geographers accepted it, and many maps of the latter part of the eighteen century will be found which display Fonte’s alleged discoveries and the vast Sea of the West in the northern part of North America near the northwest coast.         Successi diversi traggici et amorosi in Napoli et altrove a Napolitani, cominciando dalli Re Aragonesi.

1750 - Cm. 20, cc. (2) 60 (4) 221 + 1 cb. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS . : Hyacinthus I; Gloria Mundi (print)

      - Original hand-coloured engraving executed by J. M. Seligmann. Leaf measures 19.9 x 14.2 inches (50.5 x 36 cm). Fine condition. Some cosmetic retouching in gouache. Matted and ready for framing. Photo available by email upon request. Several European artists were involved in this project giving a multi-ethnic flavour to the complete work. HORTUS NITIDISSIMIS is considered to be one of the most sumptuous of the florilegia. Being the one of the most elusive of the great flower books, the opportunity to own one of these leaves is reserved for only the most discriminating collectors.
