Museum Schoepflini tomus prior [all published:] lapides marmora vasa.Strasbourg, Jonas Lorenz, 1773. 3 parts in 1 volume. 4to (23×19 cm). With 17 numbered engraved plates (including 1 folding) showing about 135 objects; 3 folding woodcut plates of inscriptions; 2 engraved and 9 woodcut illustrations in the text; numerous inscriptions rendered in roman, italic, Greek and (Ashkenazic) Hebrew type. Contemporary plain-paper wrappers. Preserved in a modern cloth box lined with lovely decorated paper.

ADB XXIV, pp. 96-99 (Oberlin), at p. 98; Murray, Museums III, p. 62. First and only edition, here in the first issue of all 3 parts together, of an extensively and beautifully illustrated account of a remarkable collection of ancient inscriptions, sculpture and vases (though not mentioned in the title, the plates also include seals, cast and wrought metal objects and even a mould for casting). The folding engraved plate shows a runic calendar (dated 1750!) and a scroll written in Tibetan script. The Strasbourg historian Johann Daniel Schöpflin (1694-1771) assembled this collection and left it to the city of Strasbourg but it was destroyed in 1870, so the present book gives our most detailed record of many important lost antiquities. The second volume, which was to cover coins, gems and "lares", never appeared. Wholly untrimmed and with a few bolts unopened. Slightly tattered around the edges and with an occasional slightly dirty spot or minor marginal foxing, but generally in very good condition. The wrappers are dirty and only a fragment of the wrappers' spine remains. A remarkable view of an important lost collection.

        Produzioni Matematiche

Engraved vignettes on titles depicting the lemniscate & 16 folding engraved plates. xxiv, 528 pp.; xii, 536 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, mid-19th cent. half-vellum & marbled boards (occasional minor stains), entirely uncut. Pesaro: Stamperia Gavelliana, 1750. First edition of a rare work, containing the important collected writings of Fagnano (1682-1766), Italian nobleman and mathematician. Many of the texts printed here appear for the first time. Fagnano's advances in algebra and geometry were very far-reaching and his work on the rectification of the lemniscate made him, according to Legendre, the true founder of the theory of elliptic functions. This breakthrough was of great importance and was employed in the recent proof of Fermat's last theorem. "In algebra Fagnano suggested new methods for the solution of equations of the second, third and fourth degrees. He also organized in a rational manner the knowledge that scientists had of imaginary numbers, establishing for them a special algorithm that was far better than BombeIli's primitive one... "In geometry Fagnano formulated a general theory of geometric proportions that is more noteworthy than the countless writings, published previously, that were intended to illustrate book V of Euclid's Elements. Much more important, however, is his work on the triangle, for which he may well be considered the founder of the geometry of the triangle... "'The most important results achieved by Fagnano, however, were in analytical geometry and in integral calculus."-D.S.B., IV, pp. 515-16. "In his study of the rectification of the lemniscate, Fagnano introduced ingenious analytic transformations that laid the foundation for the theory of elliptic integrals and his work was to lead to elliptic functions. Fagnano collected many of his published works, and a few unpublished ones, and produced the two volume treatise Produzioni matematiche in 1750. In 1751 Euler was asked to examine Produzioni matematiche and he found in this treatise relations between special types of elliptic integrals, that express the length of an arc of a lemniscate, which were quite unexpected to him. Generalising Fagnano's results, Euler went on to create a general theory of these integrals, in particular giving the famous addition formula for elliptic integrals. Fagnano had proved the duplication formula, a particular case of the addition formula, for the integrals... "In fact Fagnano had proved remarkable properties of the lemniscate, including the fact that its arcs may be divided in equal parts using a ruler and compass construction... "Fagnano made many other major contributions but his mathematical work was not without controversy. He was involved in priority disputes with Nicolaus (I) Bernoulli and, not surprisingly, the big dispute of the day which was between the supporters of Newton and those of Leibniz."-The MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive (on-line). .

Kanor, conte traduit du Sauvage, par Madame **

Amsterdam: n.p., 1750. Duodecimo, a very good copy in contemporary French mottled calf, joints neatly repaired; owner's gilt stamp 'Mr. GILLY' on front cover. First edition: a delightful fantasy set in Brazil (but not recorded by Borba de Moraes the bibliographer of Brazil). Despite her fame as the writer of several volumes of fairy tales and fables, little is known about Fagnan's life beyond the fact that she died in France around the year 1770. Kanor purports to be a translation from an ancient and very rare manuscript, chronicling two tribes living on the banks of the Amazon, and their tribulations when the Kanor people fantastically shrink to a uniform six inches, and the Alzopha grow to eight or nine feet. Unexpectedly, they all live happily ever after, and Fagnan allows herself the luxury of a moral: 'le veritable Amour fait des miracles'.

Chinese doctrine on the pulse. N.d. [ca. 1750]. N.p. [Spain]. In 8vo (203 mm x 153 mm). 1 [blank] + 11 ff. Unbound. Some damp and browning.Anonymous manuscript, dealing with a supposed doctrine of Father Du Halde (1674 ?" 1743), on the pulse; Du Halde was a Jesuit missionary to China, famous for his encyclopaedic survey on the history and knowledge of the Chinese, based on the reports of fellow missionaries. His work was originally published under the title Description geographique, historique, chronologique, politique, et physique de l´empire et la Chine and contained references on several aspects of Chinese science, including medicine. It is likely that someone took information on the pulse from it, producing this document. The author discusses the Chinese theory, including his own opinions, although he has left us no trail on his identity.

        German tarot cards

Rare German Tarot deck of playing cards. ca. 1750. [Munich]. Andreas Benedictus Gobl. Fifty six hand coloured etched cards. 112 mm x 58 mm.The set comprises fifty-six hand-coloured etched cards, of which thirteen are mounted as a group and framed and glazed, comprising four suits of fourteen (French suits), each with pip cards 1-10, and court cards showing king, queen, jack, and knight, versos with star and dotted trellis pattern in pink, rounded cornersA rare and attractive set, illustrated in Hargrave, A History of Playing Cards, New York, 1966, p.131. French-suited tarot packs most commonly comprise seventy-eight, fifty-four, or fifty-two cards, although there are examples of 56-card packs in the British Museum. Sylvia Mann says that she is not wholly convinced that the latter are not simply tarot packs which lack the twenty-two trump cards, although she does concede that ?the many versions of tarot games in southern Germany may well account for the absence of the trump cards and the presence of the knight?. (Sylvia Mann, Collecting Playing Cards, 1966, p.93). (1)Provenance: from the collection of Jaime Ortiz Patiño (1930 ?" 2013), one of the foremost collections of playing cards ever assembled, mainly of the 18th and 19th centuries; his was one of the largest since the dispersal of Lady Charlotte Schreiber?s collection in the 19th century, now in the British Library.

This is the second English translation of his 1687 work 'L'Histoire des Oracles', following the first English translation by Aphra Benn in 1688. The work is based on Antonius van Dale's 'De oraculis ethnicorum dissertationes duae' of 1683. The 'Histoire des Oracles', made a considerable stir in theological and philosophical circles at the time, and spawned a refutation by Jean-François Baltus, a Jesuit. The Preface to this new edition, signed "S. Whatley, March 2, 1750', states that "The former Edition of it in English was apparently done by a Person who, however skilled in the French Language, was entirely unacquainted with the Idiom of ours; as is evident not only from the Gallicisms in almost every Period, but from his mistaking the Sense of his Author in some Places, and rendering it in others ambiguous" - a curious statement, considering that the translator, Aphra Benn, was a woman.

        Scienza della Natura Generale

Venice: Battista Recurti, 1750. Two volumes, quarto, with a total of 62 plates (including three letterpress tables numbered in series), a fine set in contemporary full vellum with gilt lettered labels. Natural philosophy versus Newtonian physics. Well-preserved compendium of articles on science and technology, including a splendid array of engraved plates illustrating many different aspects of eighteenth-century science. 'Illustrations of particular interest are those of units of measurement, the pendulum, electrostatical machines, the pointing of mortar, the compressed air-gun, the refraction of light rays, and chyliferous vessels in man. In short Scienza della Natura presents a complete and ordered picture of the state of scientific knowledge in its time' (DSB). Giovanni della Torre (c. 1710-1782) was a prominent teacher of natural science and physics at Italian universities. A man of varied pursuits, della Torre is remembered for his improvement and simplification of the microscope, and as the author of a later separately published book on volcanoes derived from personal observations of Mount Vesuvius in the Bay of Naples. Written during a period when the teaching of science in Italian institutions was increasingly influenced by Newtonian physics, these books combine the older discursive style of natural philosophy with new rigorous experimental approaches. In Scienza della Natura Generale we encounter a curious hybrid of ancient learning within an enthusiastic, and highly rational, environment of experimental science. The scope of these books is considerable, encompassing physics and the natural sciences, as well as anatomy and other subjects. This diversity of subject material is reflected in the large number of engraved plates. Illustrations include hydraulic and pneumatic experiments, vacuum pumps and chambers, centrifuges, and similar physics projects. The design of microscopes, telescopes, and other optical instruments are likewise illustrated in some detail over several plates (interestingly, the anatomical plates include microscopic views of cells and alveoli of the lungs). One curious engraving presents an innovative diving bell suspended from a sailing vessel, presumably for collecting treasure and salvage from the seafloor.

Seltenes Exemplar.

La Verità svelata da Silvio e Ascanio Corona. In varii Successi Tragici amorosi occorsi in Napoli. Divisa in 4 Tomi.

Napoli, 1750 circa. In varii Successi Tragici amorosi occorsi in Napoli. Divisa in 4 Tomi.
