Richard Owen Cambridge was a British poet but made a valuable contribution to history in his Account of the War in India on the Coast of Coromandel from the year 1750 to 1760 (1761). He had intended to write a history of the rise and progress of British power in India, but this enterprise went no further than this one work, as he found that Robert Orme, who had promised him the use of his papers, contemplated the execution of a similar plan.         The natural history of Barbados. In ten books. By the Reverend Mr. Griffith Hughes, . . . [Large-Paper Issue]

London printed for the author; and sold by most booksellers in Great Britain and Ireland 1750 A spectacularly oversized example, with vast margins, of the scarce large-paper issue of perhaps the most important botanical work on Barbados, a book to "place beside Catesby's Natural History" (Hunt), sumptuously produced and beautifully illustrated. Folio: [4], vii, [13], 250, *251-*254, 251-314, [20]pp, complete with 30 full-page copper-engraved plates, many after Georg Dionysius Ehret (1710-1770); folding map of Barbados by Thomas Jeffreys (c.1719-1771), Geographer to King George III; several large engraved headpieces (including 'A Prospect of Bridge-Town in the Island of Barbadoes') and woodcut tailpieces and initials; list of subscribers and a slip containing errata to that list pasted to verso of p.vii (as called for in the Large Paper issue, but without the final errata leaf found in the ordinary paper issue). Rebound to style in three-quarter brown sheep over marbled boards, spine with six raised bands blind-tooled in compartments, original morocco gilt lettering piece laid down. Title page and several preliminary leaves with margins browned and edges expertly strengthened with Japanese tissue. Repaired closed tear to bottom margin of dedication leaf (not affecting text). Offsetting from plates; occasional light foxing or spotting, with somewhat stronger foxing to pp. 4-25 and *251-3 and plates 2 and 3. An excellent copy. Provenance: faded ink stamp of Lehigh University library, dated 1884, with manuscript deaccession note to top of title page (no other library marks anywhere!). Small round former owner's stamp with a monogram 'MB.'       J. Nourse; P. Vaillant;, London 1750 - Binding Copies. Volume 2 lacks leaf 193/194, but the previous owner had a 1752, revised second edition of Volume 2 with the 193/194 leaf, which volume is included with this 2 volume set. Volume 1's very rubbed calf covers have the front cover detached, and the back cover almost fully detached. The spine is very worn and dry, and the original spine label is in 2 parts, and is lacking about 25%. All the pages through page 16 of the main text are detached. Pagination: One blank frontpaper, viii, (20) (Contents and Errata), 452 main text, 46 pages Index, 2 pages publsher's advertising, 2 blank endpapers. The pages have foxing, with some larger browning to the title page and some other preliminary pages. Volume 2's detached front cover has the brown leather overlay peeled. The binding is split in 2 places: between pages 192/195 and between pages 206 and 207. The very worn spine is split down the middle, with just a small fraction of the original spine label remaining. The first frontpaper is detached. Pagination: Three blank frontpapers, xvi Contents, 2 pages publishers' advertising, 483 pages main text, 2 blank endpapers. The pages are foxed, with many pages having light browning in the outer margins, with the frontpapers and the title page having some larger brown stains. Both volumes have early ownership inscriptions on a frontpaper and on the top of the title page. The top right corner of the frontpapers have a crossed-out: T. Henley(?) / 3 Inner Temple/ 1797". A larger inscription at the center of the title page is: "Christ-n Hoxie / Book April 12th 1799". The name of W. C. Tobey is at the upper right corner of each title page. The extra volume - Volume 2 of the 1752 revised edition is also a binding copy. Both rubbed covers are detached, and the binding is split down the middle, with additional binding cracks and loose pages, with a very worn and dry spine. Pagination: One detached and edge-chipped, blank frontpaper, a clean and slightly edge-chipped title page, xvi Contents, a closed tear in leaf 7/8 through the text but with no loss, 483 pages main text, one page publisher's advertising, 46 pages Index, 4 detached, edge-chipped pages of publishers' advertising, one edge-chipped, detached blank endpaper.         A serious proposal for promoting lawful and honourable marriage.

8vo., (2) 74pp., first and last leaves rather dust-soiled, short closed tear in title (no loss), old maroon half morocco over marbled boards, neatly rebacked to match, gilt lines and old label. A good copy. A marvellous, and very early, proposal for a marriage agency in London. The author observes that there are a significant number of young, eligible, unmarried women in the capital who "thro' either choice or necessity, have cultivated so slender, or ill-suited an acquaintance amongst single men, as not to be able, on a fair examination of their own hearts, seriously to approve of any one in their whole circle, that might be inclined to make overtures of marriage". And at the same time the author observes that "there are ..... many single ladies, in and about this great city of London, who, thro' too confined an education, and severe restraint, have not been so properly introduced into the world as they ought; and have, by that means, lost many advantages, in respect of marriage .....". From page 34 the author describes in detail the scheme he has in mind. There were 23 rules of engagement, as it were, which together make up the essentials of how it was all planned to work. In the first place, there were to be "two public offices ..... at two different parts of the city; viz. one near Temple-Bar, and the other near Charing-Cross: this to be called, The Ladies Office; and that, The Gentleman's". (Thus avoiding "as much as possible, all impertinent curiosity, of either sex"). Each office to have a registrar who would attend on each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday", from 11am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm. Records would be kept on the payment of a one guinea registration fee. These records, all duly stamped and recorded, would include a "letter of description" of each client, giving essential details (age, height, complexion, "fortune" or financial status, profession or trade, &c. &c. and pseudonym). The register of clients would be available to view on certain days for one shilling per view. "Rule XII. That if any gentleman, or lady, on looking over their opposite registers, shall approve of any description, and circumstances, as there entered, so as to desire an interview with such person; on sending a letter, directed to the said office as above, and subscribed by his or her second name, or popular name, with the number on the stamp before the date, of such proposal; the same shall be immediately communicated to such lady, or gentleman, and his or her answer thereto, transmitted, as soon as received". There would be a further fee payable when an "interview" was arranged. Strict rules governed such meetings - to take place in "a private house of reputation and credit", to have no locks or bolts on the doors, and to have a guard "constantly on call".Throughout his description of the proposal, the author clearly sees it as imperative that "undiscoverable privacy" and probity of behaviour were both essential. "Rudeness, or indecency of any kind whatsoever" were to be avoided at all costs.

Veduta generale del monastero di Vallombrosa.

      - Firenze, tiratura della fine del XIX secolo. Incisione in rame all’acquaforte, b/n, cm 55 x 143 ca. (alla lastra), stampata su quattro fogli poi uniti. Al margine inf. sin. Ant.

Torah, nevi'im u-khetuvim Biblia hebraica sine punctis Accurante Nath Forster

Oxonii: E Typographeo Clarendoniano 4to (24 cm; 9.5"). 2 vols. in 1. I: [4], 126, [1], 110 ff. II: [1], 116, [1], 142 ff.. 1750 Late as the date may seem for it, this is the first separate edition of the Hebrew Bible printed in England, preceded only by the printing of the text as part of the Walton Polyglot. Editor Nathaniel Forster (1718–57), an accomplished scholar of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, has included (in the style of the table of contents) "Pentateuchus, Prophetae priores, Prophetae posteriores, Hagiographa"; the leaves following "Prophetae posteriores" are separately signed and printed "Vol. 2." Based on Van der Hoogh's version, the text is in Hebrew, with titles and chapter heads also in Latin. There were two issues of this, a large paper issue and the common paper issue, of which this is one of the latter. Unlike most 18th-century books printed at Oxford, this is scarce. ESTC locates only seven U.S. holding libraries (one of which has deaccessioned its copy) and WorldCat locates three additional library copies (one of which has also been deaccessioned). Of the eight reported copies still actually in libraries four are in the Northeast, two in California, one at Duke, and one in Ohio. Provenance: The Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Full modern brown morocco plain style, round spine, raised bands, gilt ruling above and below each band . A few sequential lower margins with a spill stain, a bit of foxing and instances of the lightest possible old waterstaining at rear. Two library stamps (one on title, one in a blank area of an interior leaf), as above. => A very clean, crisp copy.

- - -Miniature on double-leaf from an illuminated poetry manuscript, Moulana Nurruddin Abdorrahman Jami, North India, middle of the 18th century, on gold sprinkled paper. There are twelve lines to the page written in two columns of elegant Nasta’liq script in black ink, inter columnar rules decorated with floral motifs, corner pieces and outer margins decorated with floral sprays and motifs in colors and gold throughout, inner margins ruled in colors and gold. The double leaf measures: 275 x 212 mm. - - - The Persian mystic poet Moulana Noor-od-Din (Nuruddin) Abdorrahman Jami was born in Jam, a small town of Khorasan in 1414 CE. His poetic name is Jami, the word Jam means "wine goblet" in Persian and Nuruddin means "Light of Faith." He was born in a village near Jam, but a few years after his birth, his family migrated to the cultural city of Herat where he spent most of his life. He did travel extensively, most significantly to Samarqand, where he completed his studies. He was a famous Sufi, and a follower of the Naqshbandiyyah Sufi Order. At the end of his life (1492 CE) he was living in Herat. The Baharestan, or Land of Spring, is Jami's best-known work. It is a compendium of fables and short stories, in the tradition of the Golestan of Sa'di.

4to (293 x 235mm). With 306 fine engraved plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments with red gilt lettered label, gilt edges (very slightly rubbed). An attractive uniformly bound copy of the rare French edition, the first English one was published in 1731-1738. Eleazer Albin is one of the obscure 18th century natural history illustrators, and apart from being a teacher of drawing and watercolour hardly anything is known of him. Besides the above work he published a splendid work on the 'Natural history of Insects' and an attractive work on spiders. The plates of the above offered work were drawn by the author."Albin. was one of the first artists to set each bird on a branch or other suitable perch, sometimes with the typical food of each species as well. The importance of his books . lies in the fact that some of his illustrations and descriptions are the first of those particular species to appear and thus serve as 'type specimens'. Albin did not work alone. He shared the task of drawing, engraving and colouring the plates with his daughter, Elisabeth (c. 1708-41). She has the distinction of being the first woman known to have worked as an illustrator of bird books, signing forty-one of the plates as having been her work alone. Her style, too, was distinctive, softer and more delicate than her father's, and she was evidently more painstaking, painting with lighter, shorter strokes of the brush" (J. Elphick, Birds, the art of ornithology pp. 32-33). There are 2 issues of the work one with the plates coloured and one with plain plates as the present copy.Provenance: Signature of Palisot-Beauvois on title. Baron Marie François Joseph Palisot de Beauvois (1752-1820) was a French laywer and botanist.Anker 6; Nissen IVB, 16. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
