TOUSSAINT François-Vincent
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Voltaire]
s. i. Terza edizione molto rara.

TOUSSAINT, François-Vincent
Second German edition of Les Mœurs (1748), with the first German edition of the author’s Éclaircissement, which was not published until 15 years later. ‘François-Vincent Toussaint (1715-72) was a French writer most famous for Les Mœurs (The Manners). The book was published in 1748 and was soon prosecuted and burned by the French court of justice. Toussaint contributed to the first volumes of the Encyclopédie of d'Alembert and Diderot, he produced novels, and also worked as a proof reader, magazine publisher and language translator. He translated Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, and composed the table of contents for a 1749 edition of Montesquieu’s l'Esprit des Lois. Toussaint was born in Paris and studied to become a lawyer, but he always worked in the book trade. He was fortunate when Les Mœurs was issued, because he was acquainted with the minister of the Navy, Maurepas. The book was a scandal (and a huge success, reprinted 13 times in the first year) for several reasons, including the fact that one of the novel's characters was assumed to be based on the over-sanctimonious queen Marie Leszczynska. Toussaint finally got into trouble because of his book in 1757, during the period when Robert Damiens attempted to assassinate Louis XV of France. On the other hand, Claude Adrien Helvétius legally published his book De l'Esprit in 1758. It was then that the enemies of the Enlightenment saw their chance to destroy the hated Encyclopédists. This was the moment when Les Mœurs came to be regarded as a book that could lead to regicide. He left France then, trav … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUME, DAVID). - [TRUE FIRST EDITION OF THE "ENQUIRY"]
London, A. Millar, 1748. 12mo. Contemporary full mottled calf with five raised bands to spine and double gilt line-borders to boards. All edges of boards blindstamped. Binding overall worn, but fine, tight, and unrestored. Neat old owner's name to inside of front board. Front free end-papers with a crease. Some mild brownspotting, but otherwise internally very nice. Woodcut vignette to title-page. IV, 256, (4, -adverts) pp. Fully complete, with the contents leaf and the 2 ff. of adverts. ¶ The rare first edition of one of the most influential books in the history of philosophy, the work that - in Kant's own words - woke him from his "dogmatic slumber", "One of Hume's most important philosophical works, and one of the greatest works in Western philosophy" (Cambridge texts in the history of philosophy).

This scarce first edition of what is arguably Hume's magnum opus, one of the greatest classics of philosophy, was published under the title "Philosophical Essays concerning Human Understanding" and did not receive the title under which it is known today, namely "Enquiry concerning Human Understanding" (also known simply as the great "Enquiry") until 1758, when it appeared under that title in the edition of the Essays & Treatises.

In 1739-40, Hume had published his first book, "A Treatise on Human Nature", which was very poorly received indeed and, according to Hume himself, a complete failure. "In a striking (and subsequently famous) passage, it concluded that Scepticism (of some form) is the only credible philosophical outlook.
These striking and unsettlin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Axs [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. ... WILLIAM WALL, (1647–1728), was adivine and biblical scholar, son of William Wall plebeius of Sevenoaks, Kent, was born at Maranto Court Farm in the parish of Chevening in that county on 6 Jan. 1646–7. He matriculated from Queen's College, Oxford, on 1 April 1664, proceeded B.A. in 1667, and commenced M.A. in 1670, being incorporated in the latter degree at Cambridge in 1676. After taking orders he was admitted to the vicarage of Shoreham, Kent, in 1674. Subsequently he declined, from conscientious scruples, the living of Chelsfield, three miles from Shoreham, and worth 300l. a year. However, in 1708 he accepted the rectory of Milton-next-Gravesend, about one-fifth of the value and at twelve miles' distance. In the same year he was appointed chaplain to the bishop of Rochester. His writings in defence of the practice of infant baptism were widely appreciated, and, in recognition of their merit, the university of Oxford conferred upon him the degree of D.D. by diploma, 31 Oct. 1720. His chief antagonist, John Gale [q. v.], held a friendly conference with him in 1719 on the subject of baptism, but it ended without any change of opinion on either side. Wall died on 13 Jan. 1727–8, and was buried in Shoreham church. Wall stands confessedly at the head of those Anglican divines who have supported the practice of infan … [Click Below for Full Description]
