(HUMAN LONGEVITY.)
London: Printed by order of his executors, and sold by R. Baldwin,, 1748. Established upon the justest laws of the animal oeconomy, and confirmed by the suffrages of the most celebrated practitioners among the antients and moderns. From a manuscript found in the library of an eminent physician lately deceased, and by him intended as a legacy to the world. Duodecimo (163 x 97 mm). Contemporary calf, spine and covers ruled in gilt. Contemporary handwritten accountancy jottings on front free endpaper. Head of rear joint and foot of front joint beginning to split, covers lightly marked, small chip to front free endpaper and title page. A very good copy. First edition. A fascinating 18th-century guide to extending one's life, detailing the effects of different foods and environments conducive to longevity, as well as those averse to it. As with other works in the field, the conclusions generally follow the old maxim of nothing to excess, but the preface still asserts that the advice, "if it be made a proper use of, may prove more valuable than the treasures of the Indies". The work is scarce in commerce, last recorded at auction in 1986. With the bookplates of the Tollemache family of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk, and of the Lancashire chemist and bibliophile Robert J. Hayhurst.

With folding engrv. chart showing the track of the Centurion round the World 42 folding engraved maps and charts plus the 2pp. single leaf 'Directions to the Bookbinder' for placing the plates. Despite its success in terms of ships plundered and treasure captured (some £400000 sterling) some 1000 men lost their lives. Anson's account was the epitome of adventure and descriptive travel and remained the most popular work of the eighteenth century. Hill pp. 317-8; Sabin 1625.

ANSON, George
London T. Osborne 1748 - First edition. 4to.[20], 417, [1] pp., 42 copper-plates (mostly folding), complete with the 12-page subscriber list, and the "directions to binder", contemporary calf gilt, rebacked to style, red morocco label, edges repaired, endpapers renewed, occasional light spotting and offsetting, a few plates cropped close, a very good example. A landmark of eighteenth century English circumnavigation. The expedition was made in order to cut off Spanish supplies of wealth from South America after the outbreak of war between Britain and Spain in 1739. Anson succeeded in this by taking a number of prize ships off the Philippines, but at a heavy cost, losing six ships wrecked off the coast of South America or in rounding Cape Horn. Anson's voyage laid the groundwork for the British voyages of exploration in the Pacific of the later half of the eighteenth century and Richard Walter produced a masterpiece of descriptive travel that became the most popular book of maritime adventure of the time. Hill 1817; BdM I; 38.Cox I, 49; Sabin 1625. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Anon.
Woolwich, England, 5 December 1748, 1748. Royal Navy appointment of Cornelius Sheene as the Master-Cook to HMS "New Dunkirk," granting him a post on a notable ship-of-the-line that was yet to be built, as well as a servant to assist him, bearing the signatures of four members of the original 'Office of the Admiralty and Marine Affairs' which had been established in 1705. Original printed document, 1 page, completed in manuscript. Single leaf laid paper, watermarked with the Shield of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom including the Anglo-Saxon maxim "Honi soit qui mal y pense on the garter which surrounds the shield." Leaf measures approximately 19 x 30 cm. Very slight age-toning and creasing, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, a most uncommon naval document. What is most fascinating and unusual about this document, is that the Admiralty did not often appoint cooks. Formal appointments were generally reserved for Commanders, Captains, certainly for a Commander-in-Chief of a foreign station, and for other high-ranking posts. Cornelius Sheene must have been exceptionally skilled at his trade, preparing meals at sea and providing sustenance to large crews, also contending with the unique challenges of foreign goods, unforeseeable shortages, and unique diseases of a Pacific voyage. Not only was he granted an official appointment, he was to be provided with a servant to assist him. In addition, he was being assured employment on a ship that was not yet built. The document is signed in the original by Royal Navy Captain Richard Haddock (1673-1751) … [Click Below for Full Description]
