Chez L'honore & Fils., Amsterdam 1748 - Two volumes in one, octavo, owner's name on title; a very good copy in contemporary French mottled calf. First edition of this important, controversial, and strangely prescient work, dedicated to Cyrano de Bergerac. By using the device of an imaginary voyage to India by a French missionary, and by presenting the work's philosophy as the beliefs of an Indian mystic, Maillet sought to make palatable his pre-Darwinian theories of evolution. De Maillet (1656-1738) was a diplomat and explorer. His fame rests almost exclusively on this work, which Ward and Carozzi described as introducing 'the concept of slow changes over a great period of time and that of a diminishing ocean as well as the evolution of marine life into terrestrial life. Everybody read Telliamed'. Generally, the work was based on de Maillet's observations throughout Europe, and depends on the study of geological age to contradict the biblical chronology. Although most of the theory is sheer fancy - in particular his belief that the earth is in fact a burnt out star - his insistence on the importance of scientific study of rock formations was influential. It also uses classical and modern precedent to tentatively suggest that all life may in fact have had its origins in the sea. The work was not published until ten years after de Maillet's death, and even then reluctantly, by his friend the Abbé Le Mascrier, who was also responsible for the work's dedication to Cyrano de Bergerac. Even with this posthumous publication, Le Mascrier still found it easier to attribute the work to an Indian philosopher (the eponymous 'Telliamed' is a simple inversion of the author's real name) in an attempt to dilute its radical impact. It is thought that Diderot was heavily influenced by this work in his shift from deism to atheism, and Sabin comments that it was 'long supposed to have suggested to Mr. Darwin his celebrated theory.'.

. . . 2 vols. in 1, 8vo. [14], cxix [i.e., lxix] [9], 112, 121-208; [2], 231 [1]pp. Vol. I without signature P (pp. 113-20) as always; text is complete nevertheless. Amsterdam: l&#39;Honoré et fils, 1748. 196 x 117 mm. Mottled calf c. 1748, gilt spine, a little worn, front hinge tender. Lightly browned, but very good. Modern bookplate.</p><p>First Edition of this early and unusual evolutionary and geological treatise, written between 1692 and 1708, but considered so radical that even though manuscript copies began circulating in the 1720s, the work did not appear in print until 10 years after the author&#39;s death. Maillet believed that the earth had once been covered by a universal ocean, and he attributed all of the planet&#39;s geological features to the actions of this ocean, applying present-day marine mechanisms to a geologic past stetching back at least 2 billion years. Maillet was thus a forerunner of 19th-century uniformitarian geologists, and he also anticipated Lamarck in claiming that present-day terrestrial life forms had adapted themselves from ancient marine flora and fauna through a process of transformation.

Charles-Antoine Jombert Paris 1748 - Two parts in a volume folio (43 x 29 cm). Frontispiece, title, [12], 196 pp.; title, 244, [2] pp., with 41 engraved plans and maps, most double page, including a large folding map of Paris; tear to corner of one leaf without affecting the text. Contemporary red morocco gilt, gilt monogram to covers, spine in seven compartments, green morocco label to second, others richly gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt. A superb example of the first edition of Puysegur's important 'art of war' from the library of the Russian Tsar. This classic work on warfare balances traditional enthusiasm for models from Classical History and of individual bravery, with a suitable emphasis on the increasing importance of firepower and well-deployed artillery. Part I describes the rules of formation and movement in battle, and part II puts these rules in action in an imagined battle between the Seine and the Loire. The work was compiled by Marshal Jacques Franccedilois de Chastenet de Puységur (1656-1743), who served with distinction as the most experienced Marshal of Louis XIV. A lifetime of experience combined with devoted study of the classic texts on warfare went into his Art de la Guerre. His son, who also became a Marshal of France, published his father's classic on war posthumously. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Voyage Round the World , in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. By George Anson, Esq; Commander in Chief of a Squadron of His Majesty's Ships, sent upon an Expedition to the South-Seas? Compiled from papers and other materials of the Right Honourable George Lord Anson, and published under his direction, by Richard Walter, M.A., Chaplain of His Majesty's Ship the Centurion, in that expedition

Printed for the Author by John and Paul Knapton, London 1748 - Thick quarto, with strong impressions of all 42 folding engraved plates and maps, with the single leaf of directions to the bookbinder for placing the engravings; later half calf over original marbled boards; a few stains internally but generally in extremely good condition. One of the Royal Paper copies. First edition, one of 350 large or 'royal paper' copies, much superior to the relatively ill-proportioned ordinary paper issue. Cox calls the present imprint "the genuine first" and notes two issues, one for the author and the genuine first, with p. 319 misnumbered, as here. This may also be a subscriber's copy as it has the armorial bookplate of an E. Lloyd: four Lloyds appear in the List of Subscribers, one of them "Ellis Lloyd Esq;". Anson's Voyage, 'a masterpiece of descriptive travel' (Hill) and one of the great publishing successes of the eighteenth century, was widely read and it is unusual to find copies in as excellent condition as this. The narrative, based on Anson's own journal, had an enormous popular success: for the mid-eighteenth-century reader, it was the epitome of adventure, and it was translated into several European languages and stayed in print through numerous editions for many years. 'Anson's voyage of 1740-44 holds a unique and terrible place in British maritime history. [When] Anson reached the coast of China in November 1742 he was left with one ship and a handful of men, some of whom had "turned mad and idiots". The most extraordinary part of the voyage was still to come, for despite his losses Anson was determined to seize the treasure galleon that made the annual voyage from Acapulco to Manila. Laden with Peruvian silver, she was the "Prize of all the Oceans". In June 1743 Anson intercepted the Nuestra Señora de Covadonga, and in a 90-minute action forced her surrender. After refitting at Canton he returned home the next year to find himself compared with Drake, and his exploits with the long-remembered feats of arms against the Spain of Philip II. The casualties were forgotten as the public celebrated a rare triumph in a drab and interminable war?, and in 1748 the long-awaited authorised account appeared under the name of Richard Walter, chaplain on the Centurion, and became a best-seller. Walter's volume has formed the basis of all accounts of Anson's voyage from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. The book, more fully illustrated than any similar work up to that time, was both a stirring story of adventure at sea and an exhortation to further Pacific enterprise' (Glyn Williams, The prize of all the oceans. The triumph and tragedy of Anson's voyage round the world, 1999, pp. xvii-xviii; and for the long-standing dispute over authorship see appendix I: Williams concludes that Walter may have commenced the work and saw it through the press, but Benjamin Robins, a talented and versatile mathematician and an experienced writer, was primarily responsible for its literary quality. There is, however, no doubt that Anson closely scrutinised the text and in everything except stylistic terms the narrative is Anson's own interpretation of events).         The Christian Institutes; or, the Sincere Word of God.Being a Plain and Impartial Account of the Whole Faith and Duty ofa Christian

London - Innys8.5 by 5; (xxii)329(7)pp., 1748. London - Innys8.5 by 5; (xxii)329(7)pp., 1748 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The most recognisable work of Locke&#39;s contemporary. Francis Gastrell (1662-1725) was educated at Christchurch, Oxford, where he maystudied under John Locke (who was, in any event, a personal friend for the remainder of his life). His involvement in Trinitarian controversy led him to be made Boyle Lecturer for 1697. He was made Chaplain to the Commons in 1701,Cannon ofChristchurch in 1703, and Chaplain to the Queen in 1703. Gastrell was involved in political and religious intrigue, publishing an anonymous criticism of Samual Clarke&#39;s views on the Trinity. Appointed Bishop of Chester in 1714, he was suspected of Jacobite leanings and often accused of permitting his political views to colour his theology. The Christian Institutes are his most prominent work; presented as a series of texts outlining the basis of the bible and of Christian doctrine. Condition: Externally, bound in old calf with contrasting label, gilt lines to borders of boards, and gilt spinal decoration. Corners of boards bumped, with piece of calf missing from spine. Internally, hinges are tender but quires remain firmly bound. Lightly browned a dusty throughout, with a few edges of leaves worn. Bookplate of Professor David Arthur Pailin to front pastedown. Eight lines written in Welsh to tidemarked frontpaper. Further tidemarking to final leaves, endpaper, and back pastedown. Overall: GOOD..

Merseburg, bey Johann Gottlob Schubarth, 1748-1749.. Erster (...zweyter) Theil. (Mehr nicht erschienen!) Oktav. (I: A-L - 1748) Titelblatt, (14), 560 S.; (II: M-Z - 1749) Titelblatt, (12), 704, (2) S.; (zusammen 1.295 S.) Zwei Teile in einem schönen zeitgenössischen Lederband..

        L'Homme Machine (Man, the Machine).

Elie Luzac Fils, Leyde 1748 - TP + [i]-[iv] = Avertissement + [vi]-[xviii] = Dedicace + [1]-109, 12mo. Sometimes referred to as the "X" issue of the First Edition but, more accurately, the Second Edition, (Stoddard 31). The Most Shocking Enlightenment Declaration of Atheism. The very rare second edition of La Mettrie's L'Homme Machine - the first edition (numbering 108 pages and sometimes referred to as the "W" issue) having been destroyed on orders of the Consistoire of Leyden in December of 1747 with almost no copies surviving. Tchemerzine (VI, p. 465) reports only 6 to 8 extant copies of this edition - but incorrectly claims a TP date of 1747. Tchemerzine then lists a 148 page edition as being the next edition issued after this rare first edition but this has since been proved to be a later piracy and is sometimes referred to as the "Y" issue. Roger Stoddard, in his recent bibliography on La Mettrie, lists the rare 108 page version (#30) as the true first edition. He differentiates between two 109 page versions (#31 & #32) by noting that the first has a 6 line quote from Voltaire on the TP while the second has a 7 line quote. Although both of these books have title pages listing 1748 (MDCCXLVIII) as the publication date, Stoddard notes that the first (#31) was published in "1752 or before" and the second (#32) in 1764. This copy has the 6-line quote from Voltaire identifying it as Stoddard's #31. This book marks the starting point of modern materialism and was the most forceful expression of the anti-religious sentiment of the Enlightenment. In La Mettrie's "human machine' there was no essential difference between conscious and unconscious behavior, no freedom of the will, no rational soul and no moral good beyond the perfectibility of the mechanism. In its final consequence, this doctrine of physiological determinism leaves no freedom to the individual and all human actions are intrinsically amoral. period-style full vellum making this an absolutely lovely copy of an extremely rare little book.
