Bowen, Emanuel
London: Emanuel Bowen, 1744. The first English map devoted solely to the Dutch discoveries in New Holland (Australia). It is based on Thevenot's map of 1663, with the addition of a decorative cartouche on the lower left and a wonderful explanatory note on the history of discovery. Bowen expounds an optimistic view of the country's riches. Dampier's account of the west coast of Australia had reported that the land was worthless - Bowen rejected this, based on the fact that South and Central America were overflowing with riches. James Cook, discoverer of the east coast of Australia, carried this map on his 1st voyage of discovery. One of the most attractive early Australian maps. A wonderful copy with good margins. Slight offsetting caused by the original folds, however not a real detraction from this important map.

Frontis portrait. ¶ One of two contemporary accounts of Annesley vs Anglesea, one of the most famous trials of its era, the engaging story of a young heir, James Annesley, who was kidnapped and sold into indentured servitude in America. Years later he escaped and returned to successfully reclaim his estate from a conniving uncle. The Annesley case has been a source for the plots of numerous works of literature, including Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, Peregrine Pickle by Tobias Smollett, Guy Mannering by Walter Scott, the Wandering Heir by Charles Reade and the Memoirs of an Unfortunate Young Nobleman by Eliza Haywood (which is sometimes said to have been written by James Annesley himself). LE ROY, Pierre Louis (1699-1774).
London, 1744. In 1743, a group of 14 Russians sailed into the North Sea on a hunting expedition to the Svalbard Archipelago. When the bad weather hit, four men went ashore to reconnoiter the possibilities for shelter there.Meanwhile, the ship was lost, leaving the four to fend onshore. Six years passed before another ship happened by and the four sailors were rescued. They returned to some celebrity, and they were interviewed intensively by Pierre Le Roy, a French Huguenot academic resident in St. Petersburg. Their account was published in German at Riga and Mietau, 1760, and was translated into English by the publisher C. Heydinger "at the desire of several members of the Royal Society," as the title page tells us. The story, and the story of how the book came to be written, is the subject of "Four Against the Arctic" (2003) by David Roberts, and is covered in "Arctic Obsession" (2011) by Alexis S. Troubetzkoy.. 22 cm; [41]-118 pages. Bound in recent half buckram over marbled boards, titled on spine. Marginal comments and underlines in contemporary hand. Blindstamp of the Library of the American Museum of Natural History on title page.
