1744. KING PHILIP V OF SPAIN (REIGN 1700-1746). Decreto di sua maesta il re cattolico Filippo V. Sopra varie Accuse portate al Suo Real Consiglio delle Indie contro i Gesuiti del Paraguay... Napoli: 1744. First edition of the 1743 proclamation by King Philip V of Spain that resulted in the expulsion of the Jesuits from their Reductiones in Paraguay. The controversial (and highly successful) indigenous mission communities were given certain privileges and immunities that aroused the jealously of Spanish and Portuguese merchants and soldiers. They were eventually abolished and destroyed by the authorities. This decree was reprinted in other editions (for example, an octavo in Milan in 1758, as well as a 1744 Spanish edition). Also included is a letter by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires (most likely a complaint against the Jesuits in South America). This first edition is in a large quarto format with nice wide margins. A few slight spots of foxing. 4to (25.5 x 19.5cm), 66pp. Bound in modern boards. [Palau 87399; Sabin 19209; Streit-Dindinger 3, 499; JCB, Third Part 783].

HEYDT, Johann.
Wilhermsdorf and Nuremberg: C. Tetschner, 1744. Large oblong folio, with 115 engraved maps and plates; an excellent large copy with wide margins in contemporary vellum, spine lettered in gilt. A very rare work, seldom found complete; this copy in particularly good condition. The large, lavish, and handsome engravings depict the ports and bases of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Asia and Africa, primarily based on original drawings by the author. Heydt (1702-50) was a German engraver and traveller who worked in the Far East from 1734 to 1741. The single most illustrated place is Batavia (modern day Jakarta), the main base of the VOC in Asia, with forty-seven plates devoted to the port, city, and buildings. Another large group is dedicated to Sri Lanka, and about twenty depict different locations in the East Indies (including fine views of Malacca, with a city plan, Sumatra, the Moluccas and other locations). A series of plates shows scenes at the Cape of Good Hope. There is also a plate showing Nagasaki in Japan and another of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. Besides these there are several maps, included a double-hemisphere map of the World, Sri Lanka, the East Indies showing northern Australia, Africa, and the north Atlantic. The fine plates constitute one of the richest iconographic depictions of the Dutch settlements and colonies in Asia and Africa, all beautifully drawn and engraved. The first illustrated book on Batavia, this also has the important distinction of having been prepared by by an eyewitness who lived there in the late 1730s. Heydt was a precise drawer and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Samuel Butler; Zachary Grey
Cambridge: J. Bentham, 1744. Samuel Butler (8 February 1612 - 25 September 1680) was a poet and satirist. Born in Strensham, Worcestershire and baptised 14 February 1613,he is remembered now chiefly for a long satirical burlesque poem on Puritanism entitled Hudibras. The work is a satirical polemic upon Roundheads, Puritans, Presbyterians and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War. The work was written in three parts in 1663, 1664 and 1678 although an unauthorised edition came out in 1662. Published only four years after Charles II had been restored to the throne and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell being completely over the poem found an appreciative audience. The satire is not balanced as Butler was fiercely royalist and only the parliamentarian side are singled out for ridicule. Butler also uses the work to parody some of the dreadful poetry of the time. The epic tells the story of Sir Hudibras, a knight errant who is described dramatically and with laudatory praise that is so thickly applied as to be absurd, and the conceited and arrogant person is visible beneath. He is praised for his knowledge of logic despite appearing stupid throughout, but it is his religious fervour which is mainly attacked. His squire, Ralpho, is of a similar stamp but makes no claim to great learning, knowing all there is to know from his religion or "new-light", as he calls it. Butler satirises the competing factions at the time of the protectorship by the constant bickering of these two principal characters whose religious opinions should unite them. These are fawning … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grimoires ] Henri Cornelius Agrippa, Peter de Abano et al.
( Imprimerie de Blocquel ) 1744 [ 1830? ], Rome [ Lille]. Hardcover. Small Octavo. 5.5 x 3.5 inches. (1 - 7) 8 - 112 (+ ii avertissement)pp. Contemporary quarter leather binding, brown leather backstrip over marbled paper boards. Gilt titling on leather spine label, raised bands, gilt rules and decorations to spine. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Frontispiece, and five full-page plates, various sigils and devices in-text. An unusual early nineteenth century French grimoire. While the title suggests that it is a compilation of the magical works of Agrippa, along with de Abano's Heptameron, it might more accurately be described as grimoire drawing from the work of Agrippa and de Abano, as in addition to material by them it includes text and illustrations that do not seem to be found in the work of either men, and are rather representative of the French grimoire tradition. The title page suggestion that it was published in Rome in 1744 is an obvious blind, as the publisher's imprint "Lille - imp. de Blocquel" appears in the bottom margin of the final leaf of the "Table" at the end, indicating that it was from the printery of Simon Blocquel (1780 -1863), bookseller, printer, and publisher of numerous grimoires. It is undated, but probably circa 1840. Binding lightly rubbed, and corners bruised. A printed page "Catalogue des Lives Rares et Curieux Sur La Magie" listing grimoires and tarot decks is tipped onto the blank facing the half-title page. Pages very lightly mottled. Still a lovely, VG + copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Internally fine and clean. ¶ Second or third edition, a contrefacon not printed in London, but in Paris. "Voltaires's importence for the history of science lies particularly in his having composed a famous popularization of Newton, Élemens de la philosophie de Nrwton (1738), while also collaborating with his companion and mistress, Émilie, marquise de Chatelet, on her translation of the Principia into French, and more generally in his having referred, with the lightness of touch that made him a serious critic of the human condition, his moral philosophy to what he took to be Newtonian, and hence a correct account of physical reality." (DSB XIV:p.83), The work has been called one of the most beautifull illustrated scientific works at all.- This edition not in Gray's Bibliography.

COLONNA, FABIO
Mediolani [Milan]: I. P. Aere & Petri Caietani Viviani, 1744. Second Edition. This work is a milestone in the field of botany: in addition to being one of the earliest books to have engraved (as opposed to woodcut) pictures of the plants discussed, it was the first to use not just leaves, but also flowers to identify plants. Fabio Colonna (1567-1650) was a thorough and precise scientist who recognized the importance of accuracy in describing plants that would be used medicinally. His research, using both dried specimens purchased from apothecaries and live plants collected in the fields, revealed to him the hazards of relying upon leaves alone to identify an herb: too many plants with widely different pharmacological effects had leaves that looked very much alike. He was credited with the discovery of about 80 new plants, and the present book, his main work, continued to be of interest long after its original publication date of 1592--as can be seen from the appearance of our second edition a century and a half later (there is, however, no later antiquarian edition). Not only are the original plates here among the earliest copper engravings to show plants, but they are also some of the most pleasing botanical engravings from … [Click Below for Full Description]
