Lewenhaupt.] (FASSMANN, David?)
Amsterdam, B. van Gerrevink, 1744. 8:o. Grav. front,+ (2),+ 461-567, 62-78 s. Lätt lagerfläckig. Häftad, i nött samtida marmorerat pappersomslag.

All published of the first work, which contains a translation from Jethro Tull's "The horse-hoeing husbandry" from 1733, among other things. [Madrid, 1744. 6 leaves. Folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript annotations on top of first page and in margins of text. Old folds. Moderate dampstaining in top margins. A good copy. A rare printed decree by Philip V, King of Spain, regarding the reconstruction of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago following the earthquake that devastated that city in 1730. Detailed orders concerning the construction and operation of the Casa de Moneda and related matters regarding the processing of gold are also provided. It is noted that the reconstruction of the Santiago mint will ensure that the gold will not need to be sent to Lima for processing, as was the case after the earthquake. Dated Oct. 1, 1743, the decree was printed in Madrid for distribution to officials in the Council of the Indies and in Santiago. A printed note (dated Madrid, March 22, 1744) at the bottom of the text indicates that the text is a copy of the original which remains with the Secretary of Peru. BURTON, John
Printed at the Theatre for James Fletcher.and Sold by M. Cooper, Oxford, 1744. 175pp, [3]. With a terminal advertisement leaf. Attractively bound in contemporary speckled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, spine richly gilt. A trifle rubbed, slight splitting to joints. Private shelf-label of Porkington Library to FEP, very small worm-trail to gutter throughout, lightly foxed. Church of England clergyman John Burton's (1696-1771) repudiation of the criticisms levelled by John Oldmixon (1672/3-1742) towards the editors of Clarendon's history - Francis Atterbury, Henry Aldrich, and George Smalridge. Oldmixon had accused the men of falsifying the text within both his Clarendon and Whitlock Compar'd (1727) and History of England, during the Reigns of the Royal House of Stuart (1729). An extensive debate ensued, culminating in Burton's contribution - a defence which later scholarship would confirm to be valid. ESTC T144783. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
