Chiesa A. - Gambarini B. - Nolli C. - Piranesi G.B.
EUSTACHIUS, Bartholomeus.
Leidae Batavorum [Leiden]: Apud Joannem Arnoldum Langerak & Joannem & Hermannum Verbeek, 1744. First edition to be edited by Albinus of Eustachius's anatomical plates, important in the history of anatomy by reason of their date (1552), but not published until 1714 (G&M 391). As with other critical editions which Albinus published, this is a beautifully produced book. The plates were re-engraved by Wandelaar, who was the engraver for Albinus's own anatomical plates, and lettered outline plates were provided. Albinus wrote the preface, and added extensive notes to each plate. This edition, according to C.D. O'Malley in DSB, "is the most desirable one for purposes of study." Choulant, p. 202.Large folio, pp. (viii), 28, 277, (3), and 47 engraved plates on 43 leaves + 54 outline plates on 46 leaves. Half-title, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, numerous woodcut ornaments. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco label (ends of spine almost imperceptively restored), red edges, marbled endpapers. A few leaves a little browned, single wormhole in lower blank margin of first 30 leaves, but a lovely copy. With four bookplates including those of de Bellissen Bénac, Pierre Bézy, and Dr. P. Créhange.

The journal consists of thirty-six letters, six of which concern the southern colonies. "The principal work of this great Jesuit traveller and historian and the pre-eminent authority on the French period in the West" - Howes. "This work is one of the best authorities concerning various Indian tribes, some of which no longer exist. The laborious accuracy with which the work was executed can be estimated by the fact that the maps, dated 1743, are marked with the latest discoveries, in 1742, in the extreme north of America" - Lande. Most of the maps in this work were drawn by French cartographer Nicholas Bellin, including his important map of North America, a frequent source for later mapmakers, as well as some of the most definitive and up-to- date maps available of Canada. Ex-libris EH. Claudio Eliano (in greco antico: ??a?d???

Trembley, Abraham
Leiden, J. & H. Verbeej, 1744, 4°, XVI, 324 pp., 1 leaf "Avis au Relieur", illustrated with 4 large vignettes by J.v.Schley after C.Pronck, with 13 full page engraved plates by Piere Lyonnet, fine contemp. gold tooled half leather binding. BIRTH OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY FIRST EDITION on fine paper, fresh and crisp Abraham Trembley (1710-1784), Scientist, Philosopher and Pioneer of Experimental Zoology from Geneva, discovered the regenerative powers of the polyp and photosensitivity in an animal without eyes and he was the first to witness cell-division anddiscovered Hydra. Trembley was the first person to show that certain animals can be artificially multiplied by Division, the first to make permanent grafts on animal tissues, the first to prove by rigorous experiment that asexual reproduction by budding occurs in animals, and the first to witness cell-division: he also discovered the process by which Protozoa multiply. These are only a few of his contributions to biological knowledge. A large part of his research was concerned with the little fresh-water polyp, hydra, an animal of particular importance today because it is one of the standard "types" used all over the world in teaching elementary biology to students of science, medicine, and agriculture. At the time of publication, the immediate philosophical repercussions were even more startling, animal soul was clearly shown to be material. The heterogenetic origin of life seemed to be confirmed. Bonnet suggested that the polyp bridged the animal and vegetable kingdoms, nullifying their supposedly complete separation. Lat … [Click Below for Full Description]
