Autograph Letter Signed, to Edward Bromfield sending his thanks to Bromfield for giving an apprenticeship to his son and to consenting to his son's marriage to Bromfield's daughter. Also sending best wishes to the young couple

Andover, [Massachsetts], 1744. 3 pp text, 1 p. address, on one leaf. 1 vols. 6-3/8" x 8". Slightly chipped, small portion lacking (due to removal of seal) with no loss of text, customary browning, else fine. 3 pp text, 1 p. address, on one leaf. 1 vols. 6-3/8" x 8" Phillips was the minister of the parish of South Andover for 60 years (until his death in 1771), and author of an "Elegy" (1718) and numerous religious treatises and occasional sermons. His son, John, became a merchant in Exeter, NH, and a member of the New Hampshire council for several years and a liberal benefactor of Princeton and Dartmouth. His writing is a fine example of the lavish, convoluted prose (complete with 3 footnotes!) of 17th century élite Americans, to wit: "I would therefore take leave to give thanks to your self (sir) and to Madam also your worthy consort, for your many past kindnesses (too many to be now recited) to my son, during the time of his apprenticeship; and more especially, for your last & greatest, since the Expiration of the Term, viz. in giving him your Eldest Daughter in marriage, and thereby acknowledging him for a son."

The Shepherd of Banbury's Rules to Judge of the Changes of the Weather, Grounded on Forty Years Experience: To which is Added a Rational Account of the Causes of such Alterations, the Nature of the Wind, Rain, Snow…

      W. Bickerton,, London: 1744 - 8vo, later cloth backed marbled boards, [2], viii, 64 pp. Binding worn, splitting at joins with some tears on the spine, normal aging, but internally very good. This work was first published in 1670 as "The Shepherd's Legacy." Although it is unsure who the shepherd of Branbury was, it is possible that it was John Claridge. The OCLC repeating from the introduction of G.H.T. Kimble indicates that in the 1946 edition, the author refers to himself as John in the original edition. It is believed that in the present edition, additions have been made anonymously by John Campbell (ESTC T12185). Claridge talks about the benefits of understanding the weather, and describes some of the tools that are used for that purpose in his introduction, including the value of observation. However, the main purpose of his work is to share the rules that help predict the weather, such as, small and round clouds will yield fair weather for two or three days, or the chance of rain when the Moon is new.

Cat. Lapiccirella n. 168. Cohen-Ricci, col. 410. Thieme-Becker XII, 240. DBIt., vol. 49, pp. 495-7. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Vindication of the Conduct of Captain Christopher Middleton, in a Late Voyage on Board His Majesty's Ship the Furnace, for Discovering a North-West Passage...In Answers to Certain Objections and Aspersions of Arthur Dobbs, Esq..

Dublin: Isaac Jackson, J. Kinneir and Z. Marineau and James Esdall, 1744. Undetermined. very good. 1st Dublin edition. [5],6-96,145-168,48 pp.pp. Octavo. Bound in modern half polished calf and marbled board. Marbled endpapers to match. Spine ruled in six compartments. Morocco label to match. The last 10 leaves have a small amount of mainly marginal worming which is not very noticeable. Overall a very clean attractive copy. Sabin 48858, Streeter 3636; TPL 187; NMM I-795. Arthur Dobbs, a wealthy and influential Irishman, became interested in the Northwest passage and convinced the Hudson's Bay Company was concealing it or obstructing its discovery. He was able, in 1741, to get the British Government to send an expedition, under Middleton, to Hudson Bay to search for the passage. Middleton discovered & explored Wager Bay, and returned to report that no passage existed from Hudson Bay - this infuriated Dobbs, who attacked Middleton in print, and led to the famous pamphlet war between the two. This is the first of the series, published by Middleton in defense against Dobbs initial attack. Very scarce, as are all in the series. Although the pagination appears to be non continuous, as with many 18th century books the text is complete. 1744

The maps are of the world, shown in two maps, one of Europe, Asia and Africa, the other, of the Americas (depicting California as an island); Europe; Asia; Africa; North America (California is an island again here); South America; Spain; France; Britain; the Lowlands; Italy; "Germany"; Switzerland; Bohemia; Hungary; Poland; Russia; Turkey (the Ottoman Empire); the Holy Land; and Germany again, with a distance table. The maps are credited to Seutter, Lotter and/or Andr. Silbereisen, with a few uncredited. Interspersed, on the blank sheets -- there are generally two between each map -- are neatly written notes in Italian, contemporary with the publication, with place and other geographic and historic details relating to the maps, probably done by a geography student. The most interesting of these notes relate to the Americas, and we believe that the notes in general add interest to our copy. Note the title/frontis is uncolored.

Paris: Coustelier, 1744. 12mo (15.2 cm, 6"). [2], 106, [2], [109]–190 pp.; 5 plts. Two fairy tales from Lévesque (1703–45), a well-educated and enthusiastic femme de lettres. The main title-page is printed in red and black, with an engraved publisher's vignette, and the first story opens with another vignette of romping cherubs, while the second story has its own half-title and headpiece vignette. The => five plates, delightfully stylish in high 18th-century French fashion, were engraved by Claude Duflos after Charles-Nicolas Cochin (fils).    This is an early edition; Le Prince des aigues marines was originally published in 1722 and at least one printing of both fairy tales together appeared in Amsterdam in 1735. The front fly-leaf bears an early inked annotation regarding the publication history, calling this the second edition.    The volume is uncommon: WorldCat locates only eight U.S. institutional holdings.         Cohen & de Ricci 643–44; Barbier, III, 1022; Sander 1212; Gumuchian, Livres de l'enfance (1931), 3775. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with two gilt-stamped leather title-labels, raised bands, and gilt-stamped pomegranate motifs in compartments; spine and edges rubbed, joints partially refurbished. French-swirl marbled endpapers, all page edges marbled, original silk bookmark still attached and present. Pages gently age-toned with a very few spots of light staining. => An uncommon and appealing volume.

London: John Nourse, [1744]. Octavo, early 20th-century full green morocco gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt. $6800.First edition, with frontispiece and five engraved plates of plants and animals, of this rare 18th century work on West Africa.Smith was commissioned by the Royal African Company in 1726 ""to take exact plans, drafts, and prospects of all their forts and settlements; as also of the principal rivers, harbours, and other places of trade of the coast of Africa""; sailing to Africa on the Bonetta with Captain James Livingston, they ""made landfall near Cape Verde on 22 SeptemberÂ… On his first day, finding himself floundering through deep mud along the shore with huge, venomous ants infesting the mangrove trees and attacked by ferocious wasps, Smith regretted ever having undertaken this survey, but ‘having put hand to ploughÂ’ (Smith, 2) could not look back. Inevitably his actions with measuring wheel and theodolite caused some of the natives to suspect him of witchcraft, but as the survey progressed and he grew accustomed to the terrain he was able to record something of the plants and wildlife, and the various customs of the peoples he encounteredÂ… Smith worked for a little way up the principal rivers, taking soundings and marking sandbanks, but otherwise did not venture inland from the coast"" (DNB).
