Remchingen.
Ohne Ort, ohne Drucker, 1742. 3 Bl. (Titel wegen Übergröße unten eingefaltet), 56, 103, 78, 86, 68 (recte 70), 92 S., 1 Bl. Mit Textkupfer. Fol. (31,5 x 22,5 cm). 5 Bl. - II. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece (covers detached, spine abraded). Housed in a red morocco box. By the end of the 18th century, Thomas Jefferson held the largest private library in America. In 1783, his library at Monticello included 2,640 volumes. Over the next thirty years, the collection swelled to over 6,000. In 1815, Jefferson's library was sold en bloc to the Library of Congress to replace their collection lost during the War of 1812 when the British burned the Capitol. The bulk of that collection was destroyed, again by fire, on Christmas eve 1851. Jefferson would build another library between 1815 and his death in 1826, which was dispersed at auction in 1829 by Nathaniel Poor. The provenance of the present volume pre-dates both of those sales, having originally been owned by Reuben Skelton of Virginia, the first husband of Martha Jefferson's stepmother, Elizabeth Lomax Skelton. Elizabeth Skelton was the third wife of Martha's father, John Wayles, and this volume was evidently inherited by her with her husband's estate. Elizabeth passed away shortly after her marriage … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Cervantes Saavedra] Jarvis Charles, Esq
S. A. and H. Oddy, 1742. 2 volumes. The First Jarvis edition. 2 engraved frontispieces, 2 engraved titlepages and over 60 other very finely executed full page engravings, 68 total. 4to, full contemporary polished calf. the spine with raised bands gilt ruled, contrasting red and green morocco lettering and numbering labels gilt. Antique and sympathetic reback to style. xxxii, vi, 355; xii, 388. A handsome period set in a nice state of preservation, rebacked to style at some time. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED AND EARLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION. BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH FINE FULL-PAGE ENGRAVINGS THROUGHOUT. An appealing set of Cervantes' magnificent and romantic tale. Jarvis' is one of the best-known and earliest translations into English. Its presentation, from the point of view of the quality of the art of the book is splendid. Very finely executed full page engravings, engraved head and tail pieces, and engraved capitals make for a creation of the highest order. There is a fine 'Life of Cervantes' preceding the text translated from the original Spanish and with an especially handsome engraving of Cervantes. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here been included in English for the first time.

WENTWORTH, Benning (1696 - 1770)
Dover, NH, 1742. unbound. near fine. A rare memento from the War of Jenkins' Ear -- the first time that a Regiment of Colonial-American troops was raised and made part of the Regular British Army -- and sent to fight outside North America. Exceptional legal document signed "B. Wentworth," 1 page, 6.5 x 7.5 inches, written completely in the hand of James Jeffrey, clerk, Dover, New Hampshire, December 2, 1742, addressing the complaint of a widow whose husband was killed in military Service of the Crown, in full: "Whereas the Widow of Thomas Pinkham late of Dover in New Hampshire, complains: That her late husband did enlist himself in His Majesties Service for the late Cuba Expedition. And several of his members of his house say there was allowed him the said Thomas Pinkham the sum of two pounds - fourteen shillings for his subsistence money in that Service: which was never paid him per her. Wherefore Voted, that the said Widow be paid out of the money in the Treasury for payment of contingencies - the said sum of two pounds - fourteen shillings, old tenor in full of all Demands." Note: The War of Jenkins' Ear was a conflict between Britain and Spain that lasted from 1739 to 1748, with major operations largely ending by 1742. On August 4, 1742, Admiral Edward Vernon and Major General Thomas Wentworth landed troops at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in what was originally perceived as an easy victory over the Spaniards. Instead the British accomplished nothing but the loss of over 3,400 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, having succumbed to disease, too weak to repel the constant atta … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cardinal Polignac (1661-1742), an influential diplomat and art connoisseur, played an important role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Utrecht as well as maintaining close ties between France and the Vatican. Pope Alexander VIII is believed to have said to him: "I do not know how you do it; you seem to always be on my side, and I always end up on yours."-N.B.G. Polignac spent a considerable amount of time in Rome and organized archaeological digs from which he built the collection described herein. He read both Latin and Greek and developed not only a comprehensive knowledge of ancient civilization but also a refined eye for antiquities. French Manuscript]
1742. N.p., but France (probably Paris) and dated on the title M.DCC.XLII (1742). 8vo (175 x 115mm). Paginated recto and verso to 261pp. Title page with hand-drawn heraldic device (of the scribe?): unidentified joined arms of checky and wavy, all surmounted by crown. French text comprises chronologically-arranged devotions following the books of the Bible (Genesis to Apocalypse). Each prayer is titled with its biblical book and cited with chapter and verse numbers at the end. Written in a consistent hand, in brown ink in both calligraphic majuscule and italic letters, and neatly laid out within ruled borders. 19th-century calf gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled edges; (edges lightly browned, corners lightly bumped, otherwise very good copy of this seemingly unique manuscript by an unknown compiler). A later printed book sharing this title is attributed to the French poet and moralist Pierre-Laurent Bérenger (1749–1842), known as the “Troubadour of Provence.” Bérenger’s collection publishes a close textual variant of this manuscript, copying many of the prayers outright, and was first printed in Paris by P. G. Simon in 1767. According to the title, the 1767 18mo edition also contained the daily and nightly prayers for families. Bérenger’s Recueil de toutes les prieres was reprinted again with Simon in 1782, including the prayers for the Divine Office, and again in 1803 in Lyon with the slightly different title, “Recueil de prières, contenant toutes celles qui se trouvent dans l’Ecriture sainte” (“Collection of prayers, containing all … [Click Below for Full Description]
