John Hancock
An order signed by John Hancock as Governor of Massachusetts for the pension of Anthony Vassall, a slave who had filed a petition for compensation for slavery His case is a famous one and inspired other suits, which led to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts: his was the first petition for slavery compensation seriously considered, and the first granted after American independence On the verso is Vassals’s mark, the earliest signature of a slave or former slave that we have ever seen reach the market In 1742 Henry Vassall married Penelope Royall, daughter of Isaac Royall Sr., and together they moved to 94 Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Penelope had inherited from her father’s estate a Negro girl girl named Cuba (who was her maid), and some other slaves. Henry Vassall already had his own slave who served as a coachman, named Anthony, said to have been born in Spain in 1714, taken to Jamaica and then to Cambridge around 1741. When Anthony’s owner married Penelope, her young slave Cuba, of African descent, was married to Tony as he was called, a number of years her senior. As was common at the time, slaves were given the surname of their owners; hence Tony, Cuba, and their six children—Eliza, Abigail, Flora, Catherine, Darby, and Dorinda—were also “the Vassalls.” When Henry died in 1768, his widow sold Cuba and her children to her late husband’s nephew John Vassall Jr. at number 105 Brattle Street, later to become famous as Washington’s headquarters and the residence of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. She kept Tony who oversaw the management … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOURMONT, ÉTIENNE:
1742. Folio. Pp. xii, xl, iv, 516 (4). With two large folding tables and many xylographic Chinese characters in text, woodcut initials, etc. Contemporary speckled calf, spine with six raised bands decorated with gilt, title lablel, marbled endpapers. Binding lightly rubbed and spine ends restored. First edition. Étienne Fourmont (1683-1745) was one of the first European scholars to write grammars of the Chinese language. Supported by official patronage he published the 'Meditationes sinciae' in Paris in 1737 and five years later this work. They were the first works printed with Chinese characters in Paris. Fourmont based his works on Francisco Varo's 'Arte de la lengua mandarina' published at Canton in 1703 and more importantly on Joseph Henri-Marie de Prémare's 'Notitia linguae sinicae' still in manuscript form at the time (first published in 1831)."Fourmont's interpretation of Chinese appears to be influenced by the perception of the Orient prevalent at that time, and fostered the European interest in China. Fourmont linked the study of languages to the understanding of the origin of human civilization when speculating about the 214 Chinese radicals found in the Chinese dictionaries he examined in Paris: he read the sequence of the radicals as revealing the dawn of Chinese civilization. Intrigued by the classification of characters in Chinese dictionaries, he concluded that this system reveals that the alleged 'inventors of the Chinese language' proceeded in a philosophical way attributing to each character a component indicating its 'rang d'être' (rank in the category of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEUTTER (Matthaeus).
Augsbourg, 1742. 497 x 593 mm. By the end of the 18th century, Thomas Jefferson held the largest private library in America. In 1783, his library at Monticello included 2,640 volumes. Over the next thirty years, the collection swelled to over 6,000. In 1815, Jefferson's library was sold en bloc to the Library of Congress to replace their collection lost during the War of 1812 when the British burned the Capitol. The bulk of that collection was destroyed, again by fire, on Christmas eve 1851. Jefferson would build another library between 1815 and his death in 1826, which was dispersed at auction in 1829 by Nathaniel Poor. The provenance of the present volume pre-dates both of those sales, having originally been owned by Reuben Skelton of Virginia, the first husband of Martha Jefferson's stepmother, Elizabeth Lomax Skelton.
