MAUPERTUIS PIERRE-LOUIS MOREAU (de).
Chez G. Martin, 1742. Cm. 19,5, pp. (16) 176. Con antiporta illustrata e parecchie figure nel testo. Bella legatura coeva in piena pelle, dorso liscio con titoli e ricchi fregi, piatti inquadrati da triplice filetto. Dentelles interne, sguardie marmorizzate e tagli in oro. All but the first and last three letters are written from Constantinople, providing descriptions of the view of the city, of the port, the Palace, Hagia Sophia ("Il celeberimo Tempio di S. Sofia, giù profanato in Moschea"), the Tombs of the Sultans, and Seraglio. De Matteis elaborates on the city's population and the various ethnicities that dwell there ("Notizie de' Franchi, Greci, Armeni, Ebrei, Zingari"), on Turkish costume, law, politics, civil and ecclesiastic government, and describes the religious practice of Islam, the "ippocrisia de' Turchi, e loro crudeltá". Uncommonly, in spite of the diaristic and epistolary form of his account, the author does not provide any dates; yet intrinsic textual evidence (such as the mention of Mari … [Click Below for Full Description]

SYDENHAM, Thomas.
First edition of Swan's translation, and the first publication of Samuel Johnson's seven-page "Life of Dr. Sydenham." The publisher of this edition, Edward Cave, was the originator of the Gentleman's Magazine, which printed some of Samuel Johnson's first published work. It seems likely that Swan was introduced to Cave who commissioned this translation and then commissioned a biography from Johnson. The "Life" was reprinted in the Gentleman's Magazine later in the year (December). Swan's was the second edition in English of Sydenham's complete works, after Pechey's of 1696, but it was Swan's edition that became the main English source for Sydenham's thoughts until that of R.G. Latham in two volumes (1848-50) superseded it. "The sound judgement and acute observations of Thomas Sydenham, the English Hippocrates, freed clinical medicine from the last vestiges of medievalism, and set the pattern for further progress" (Dewhurst, Dr. Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689), p. vii. Meynell, A Bibliography of...Sydenham, 15.1. Fleeman, A bibliography of...Johnson, 42.11SW/1. Courtney, p. 12. Chapman and Hazen, pp. 125-126.

(Fielding, Henry) Aristophanes, Henry FIELDING & William YOUNG, translators
London: T. Waller, 1742. First edition. [iv], xv, [i], 112 pp., with half-title. 8vo. First edition this translation of Aristophanes' Plutus by Henry Fielding and William Young. The comedies of Aristophanes served as a model for two of Fielding's most successful plays, Pasquin and The Historical Register. The dedication is to the opposition reformer Lord Talbot, to whom Fielding recommends Aristophanes as one who "exerted that Genius in the Service of his Country." A footnote to Act II, scene 5, references Fielding's distaste towards those who abandoned their opposition to Walpole when he was made Lord Ormond, following his resignation in 1742: "To make use of popular interest, and the character of patriotism, in order to betray one's country, is perhaps the most flagitious of all Crimes" (p. 57). Uncommon on the market, with the last copy sold at auction in 1982 according to ABPC. Cross III, p. 307. Provenance: contemporary marginalia on a few leaves; Bernard Quaritch (pencil collation note on chemise); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate). Stabbed-sewn, stitching renewed, with publisher's prospectus slip tipped to half-title, uncut. Corners of half-title, title and final leaf renewed, some light toning and spotting. In a custom red half morocco slipcase and chemise.

HURLOCK, Joseph.
FIRST EDITION. G&M 3672. The first book on dentition of modern times (that is, since Hippocrates), and only the second book in English on dentistry (the first was Charles Allen's The operator for the teeth, 1685, of which Wing records 4 copies of 3 editions). "As far as English dental literature is concerned, it began with Joseph Hurlock in 1742. Hurlock was a strong advocate of lancing the gums of infants to permit teeth to erupt more readily and thus prevent convulsions. His treatise was a plea for parents and nurses to allow him to carry out this procedure. Hurlock apparently was a keen observer of dental conditions then found in children, noticing that the havoc wrought by caries in the deciduous teeth was undoubtedly due to diet, and recommended that such youngsters be sent to the country where fresh air and better food could be obtained" (Weinberger, Introduction to the history of dentistry, p. 330).Still, History of paediatrics, pp. 360-364. While reasonably widely held in institutional libraries, Hurlock's book is one of the great rarities of dental literature, and copies very seldom appear for sale.

In 1847 John Gage Marvin, an American legal bibliographer, described the work thus: "The laborious author spent nearly fifty years upon his Abridgment, the most voluminous production of any single individual in the whole bibliography of the Common Law. Whatever is to be found in the old Abridgments, or in all printed and several MS. Reports anterior to Geo. III., Mr. Viner has translated, abridged, remodelled, and introduced or referred to in his work." This set includes the twelfth volume, on Evidence, as well as the index volume, both of which were published posthumously in 1757. Charles Viner (bap. 1678, d. 1756), legal writer and university benefactor, was born in Salisbury. Viner entered the Middle Temple in 1700, and although he was never called to the bar he kept chambers in King's Bench Walk, Temple, from where he gave occasional legal advice. His real interest, however, was more in the literature of the law than in its practice. He began to collect notes of recently decided cases in 1703, but devoted the greater part of his life to the exhaustive arrangement of existing legal materials under alphabetical headings, based on the works of his predecessors Robert Brooke and Henry Rolle. This work was printed, reputedly under Viner's direction at his own home, on paper watermarked with his monogram, published by him personally, and the earlier volumes sold from his chambers in the Temple. Kidd, Capt. William; Captain Richard Kirkby; Captain Thomas Green)
London, 1742. Trials of noted sea captains, including of pirate Captain Kidd, Captain Richard Kirkby and pirate Captain Thomas Green.Captain William Kidd (c.1654 - 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note that relegating him to the role of pirate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp 287-338)Captain Richard Kirkby (1658 - 16 April 1703) was an officer of the Royal Navy who was tried at a court martial for his conduct during the Action of August 1702, a naval battle in the War of the Spanish Succession, in which a British squadron fought the French off the coast of present day Colombia, South America. Kirkby, who wrote to the Admiralty and claimed that the defeat was in fact caused by Vice Admiral Benbow's errors in judgment, was convicted of cowardice and disobedience and sentenced to be shot. (pp 445-448).Captain Thomas Green (1679?-1705) was an English sailor and alleged pirate, who was accused of having boarded a ship off the coast of India, seized its goods, killed the crew and sold the ship. VILLARS Nicolas Pierre Henri Montfaucon de.
chez les Freres Vaillant, 1742. Opera completa in due volumi. Testo francese. Cm.15,8x8,9. Ottime legature coeve in piena pelle.

Birmingham,: R. Walker, 1742. Birmingham,: R. Walker,, 1742.. To Which Is Added, A Genuine Account of the Voyages and Plunders of the Most Noted Pirates. Interspersed with Several Remarkable Tryals of the Most Notorious Malefactors, at the Sessions-House in the Old Baily, London. Folio, second edition, (275 by 180mm), 17 engraved plates, panelled speckled calf, spine in six compartments, red morocco label, gilt. Collation: A-I(2), K-U(2), X-Ii(2), Kk-Uu(2), Xx-3I(2), 3K-3U(2), 3X-4I(2), 4K-4U(2), 4X-5I(2), 5K-5Q(2); [4], 427, [1] pages. Errors in pagination: 122-123, 233, 236 and 336 misnumbered as 121-122, 236, 233 and 332. For many years this work was attributed to Daniel Defoe, but recently that has been called into question. It contains short biographies, many illustrated, of some of the most notorious criminals in Britain's history, including pirates Henry Morgan and Blackbeard, and outlaws Robin Hood, Sir John Falstaff, and Colonel Jack, among others. In 1724, Daniel Defoe, using the pseudonym Charles Johnson, published ‘A General History of the Robberies and Murderers of the Most Notorious Pyrates', a two-volume work intended as a sequel to Exquemeling's Bucaniers of America. Beginning with this publication and continuing even to the present day, a number of pirate books have appeared under the name of the fictitious Captain Charles Johnson. Although related in part to Defoe's History, this work is largely based on Captain Alexander Smith's 1714 The History of the Lives of the Most Noted Highway-men and Captain Johnson's 1724 A General History of the Pyrates. PINE, John after COLLIER, William
Eton,: Publish'd according to Act of Parliament by W. Collier at Eton 1742, by whom Lands are Survey'd and Maps drawn of the. DescriptionEtching with engraving. NotesThe first state of a rare and charming map of Windsor showing Eton College. Although neglected by the early Hanoverian monarchs, Windsor Castle had become a popular tourist attraction by the early 1740s, thanks both to the castles collection of curiosities and the care taken of Windsor Great Park by the Duke of Cumberland. There is an inset at the upper left corner showing the east prospect of the castle, before George III began a programme of renovation when he took the throne. The inset at the upper right shows the garden designed by Henry Wise during the reign of Anne, the last Stuart monarch. A note on the map itself explains that the design was never executed, but plans have been made to do so. The key to the right shows the principal architectural features of the school and the castle. The engraver, John Pine (1690-1756) was an important figure in eighteenth century British art. He was a friend and collaborator of Willam Hogarth; he engraved John Rocques monumental map of London; and, with Hogarth and George Virtue, he managed to secure early legislation for artists copyrights. The map is dedicated to Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough; the cartouche is decorated with his arms. Marlborough was educated at Eton, and had recently distinguished himself in the War of the Austrian Succession. There are five institutional copies held in Eton College Library, the British Library, Princeton University Librar … [Click Below for Full Description]
