[BOSCOVICH, Ruggero Giuseppe]
One folding engraved plate. xxiii pp. Large 4to, attractive modern decorated paper over semi-stiff boards. Rome: A. de Rubeis, [1739]. First edition of one of Boscovich's first publications. "Early in his career his interest was drawn to the problem of the size and shape of the earth, an issue intensively discussed in the first half of the eighteenth century, since its resolution was thought to be crucial in an eventual choice between a Cartesian cosmology of vortices, which predicted an earth slightly elongated at the poles, and a Newtonian one of inertial motion under attractive forces, in which case the globe should be slightly flattened."-D.S.B., II, p. 329. In this work, "contemporary reviewers read a plea for removing the works of Copernicus from the Index."-Hill, "Roger Boscovich. Alone chiaro limitato all'angolo inferiore delle ultime 70 pp. Bell'esemplare, intonso e in barbe. [Click Below for Full Description]

No place 1739 - Folio, title plus 140pp (approx 42,000 words), written throughout in a neat legible sloping hand without corrections, each page vuled and numbered, loose in original vellum binding, warped and darkened. This would appear to be the previously unknown earliest English Manuscript translation of what Samuel Briggs described in his translation (1841) as "The False Book". The Three Imposters (De Tres Impostoribus) was the name of a manuscript denying the 3 major Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judasim & Islam) and was known as "The Atheists Bible. The most dangerous Book that never existed". Its origin is unknown but thought to have emerged as early as the 11th Century. There is a theory that it was composed by Peter de Vignes, Secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II which would date it as early 12th Century. It has also been ascribed to such persons as Averroes or Petrus Pomponiatus, Macchiavelli, Rabelais, Erasmus, Boccaccio, Muretus, Poggio, &c. &c. There is also a school of thought that the basic version was written in Arabic. The writing circulated in manuscript for many centuries with occasional publication in Latin especially that of 1598. It was the latin publications in Amsterdam 1719 and 1721 under the title "L'Esprit de Spinoza" which brought it back for a second life, it then becoming very popular for the next half century. Copies in manuscript both in Latin and French circulated freely, especially in France where it became one of the most sought-after writings by the police ( for confiscation), curious readers, and the champions of the rad … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hume, David
London: John Noon (vols. 1-2), Thomas Longman (vol. 3), 1739-40 First edition of David Hume's greatest work. Only one thousand copies of the first two volumes were published by John Noon in 1739, and there was almost no public notice. Hume wrote, "It fell dead born from the press, without reaching such distinction, as even to excite a murmur among the zealots." As a result of poor sales, Hume changed publishers, and volume III was issued a year later by Thomas Longman in a reduced printing run. As a result, complete sets of all three volumes are rare. Hume's masterpiece has influenced the course of philosophy for more than 250 years. The Treatise contains Hume's theories of cognition and causation, his treatment of inductive inference, and his analysis of moral judgments, all of which were published here for the first time. His philosophical work delineates a distinct epoch in the evolution of modern philosophical thought, and the "Treatise of Human Nature ... is in every respect the most complete exposition of Hume's philosophical conception" (Ency. Brit. 11th). Kant is said to have exclaimed that Hume was responsible for "waking me out of my dogmatic slumber." Adam Smith wrote of Hume, "Upon the whole, I have always considered him, both in his lifetime and since his death, as approaching as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human frailty will permit." Hume's discussion of the theory of self-interest helped to shape Smith's economic philosophy. Bob McTeer, when President of The Federal … [Click Below for Full Description]
