Viani, Sostegno
Paris Monsù Briasson [1739]. First edition. Small 8vo (17.5 x 11 cm), pp. xv, [1, blank], 256. A very good copy bound in contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine. A few small worm holes to spine. All edges speckled red. Contents clean and crisp. Exlibris of Franz Pollack Parnau. Firsthand account of an important episode in the "Rites Controversy" around Jesuit practices in China. In 1720, Pope Clement XI despatched a second papal legate, Carlo Ambrogio Mezzabarba (1685-1741), Patriarch of Alexandria, to enforce his decree against the Chinese rites employed by the Jesuits. Mezzabarba sailed from Lisbon in March, 1720, and reached Canton in October that year. The legate stayed in China for more than a year and secured a series of difficult interviews with the Kangxi Emperor. Before departing in November, 1721, he issued a series of interpretations of Clement's decree intended to improve the fraught position of Chinese converts. These permitted veneration of tablets and tombs and the making of offerings under certain circumstances. Mezzabarba's mission failed to reconcile the Kangxi Emperor to the papal policy change and suppression of the Jesuit rites. His assertion of papal authority further enraged the emperor, and contributed to the imperial edicts issued against Catholic missions in China. Sostegno Viani accompanied Mezzabarba as his confessor on the Chinese embassy and maintained a diary during the mission, which formed the basis for this work. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1000? 9.18; no; jr 2nd 605 5.15; jr only, red fr 850 11.11: 3 x 800 ish 2009 Winter 305 2007 Bonhams 3 … [Click Below for Full Description]

COURET-VILLENEUVE, LOUIS-PIERRE.
, . . Kuijlen & Wijnands 66 & exhib. 2; Veendorp & Becking, p. 45 & bibliog. item 6. First catalogue of the plants botanical garden at the École Centrale in Ghent, which later became the city and university botanical garden, arranged according to the Linnaean classification. The main text covers 687 numbered plant genera, often listing several species, with brief descriptions. The supplement lists 123 numbered species without descriptions, but also under the Linnaean class headings. The compiler Courdet de Villeneuve (1739-1806) was not a professional botanist but had been an overseer of printing in Revolutionary France and moved in 1800 to Ghent, where he taught grammar at the new École Centrale. When Napoleon conquered the southern Low Countries (territories of the Austrian Habsburgs) in 1794 Ghent became the capital of one of the new departements, which each had a central school with a library, botanical garden and other facilities for study. With an owner's inscription. In very good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed and the head of the backstrip chipped and repaired, but still in good condition. An interesting record of botanical scholarship in Napoleonic Ghent.

L'ouvrage eut un franc succès en Europe, et est surtout une attaque contre la conception mécaniciste de Descartes.

Argens, Jean-Baptiste De Boyer, Marquis D'
London; Printed For D. Browne And R. Hett. Later half calf and marbled boards. 16mo. Xii, 303, [45] pages. 17 cm. First English edition. Translated from the original into French, by the Marquis d'Argens; and now done into English. A translation of the first 40 letters only of Lettres juives. “The original ‘Lettres juives, ou correspondence philosophique, historique et critique…' began publication as a series of weekly pamphlets as early as March or April, 1736. By 1737, a year after they were printed at the Hague in book form, they were well known throughout France. … The first English edition, entitled The Jewish Spy, appeared in London in 1739 (first forty letters only) – followed by four more volumes in 1740. The second edition, in five volumes, appeared in 1744. … Matters relating to Jews and Judaism occupy only a small portion of The Jewish Spy, but they engaged some sixteen letters completely [letters 1, 23, 36, etc. ], and references are scattered through no less than seventy others. … D'Argens, though frequently salting his letters with earthy and ribald humor – often anti-clerical, rarely descends to jesting about Jews. … Transparently, the author is no Judaeophile. He offers many harsh chastisements of both Faith and People. Just as he uses Judaism as a constant foil against the weaknesses of Christianity, he exalts Karaism time and again to the detraction of Rabbinism or traditional Judaism. … undoubtedly he helped create the new atmosphere that made Emancipation possible by the end of the century. ” (Stanley Brav, ‘Jews and Judaism in the Jewish Spy'; Studies in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plate 100: This anatomy plate shows a foetal skeleton. Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Description: This scarse / rare large original old / antique medical / anatomy print / plate originates from: 'Anatomia Corporum Humanorum' by William Cowper, 1739, latin ed. The major source of this work was the Dutch anotomist Goverd Bidloo and his landmark work titled: 'Anatomia Humani Corporis' (1685). What started as an English translation of Bidloo's work first published in 1698 ended in a court fought battle over plagiatism by Cowper. Cowper did not even mention Bidloo in his work. The famous plates in this work (by Gerard de Lairesse) are identical to the ones from Bidloo's work and actually even bought from Bidloo. Cowper added some of his own new plates. The plates are particularly valued for their artistic quality.Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is William Cowper (c. 1666 - 1709) was an English surgeon and anatomist, famous for his early description of what is now known as the Cowper's gland. Govert Bidloo or Govard Bidloo (1649 - 1713) was a Dutch Golden Age physician, anatomist, poet and playwright. He was the personal physician of William III of Orange-Nassau, Dutch stadholder and king of England. Gerard or Gerard de Lairesse (1640 or 1641 - 1711) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and art theorist. Condition: Fine. 1739. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'The History of the Sky' by Noel Antoine Pluche, is one of the most important and well-known treatises on astronomy and cosmology. This rare first edition, published by Estienne and is illustrated with 24 full-page engravings by J. P. le Bas. These images depict mythological beings and creatures, sculptures and art of ancient Egyptian gods, and other important historical esoteric and pagan symbols. In this work, Pluche "restated his opposition to the cosmologies proposed by physicists. He also attempted to demonstrate that monotheism preceded polytheism." (DSB). [Attributes: First Edition]

Accademia della Crusca.
Apresso Domenico Maria Manni. The website of the Accademia della Crusca explains that "[t]he origins of the Accademia della Crusca can be traced back to the decade 1570 to 1580, and to the meetings of a group of friends who called themselves the 'brigata dei crusconi' ('brigade of coarse bran'). The fun with food words soon resulted in the "establishing the use of the symbology related to flour and to the process of bread-making, and giving the Accademia the purpose of 'separating the flour (the good language) from the bran (the bad language)', following the language model first advocated by Bembo and then by Salviati himself, a model that was based on the supremacy of the Florentine vulgar tongue, modelled on the authors of the 14th Century." That is, the Academy dedicated itself in good Renaissance fashion to the study of the vernacular and to establishing -- normatively and not prescriptively -- what "good Italian" was. This involved selecting the best authors and combing their works for examples of usage. The result was the Academy's dictionary, which first appeared in print in 1612. Offered here is a set of the first abridged edition of the fourth edition. In the fourth edition (1729-38) "the series of quoted authors was widened to include Sannazaro, Cellini, Menzini, Lorenzo Lippi and many others and the work of sorting was given more rigid rules. In particular, quotations taken from handwritten texts or from editions that were considered incorrect were checked over. This edition -- like the previous ones -- provoked endless debates and criticisms; with the in … [Click Below for Full Description]

1739 - Manifesto of Charles VI, (1685-1740), Holy Roman Emperor, advancing his reasons and strong displeasure regarding the Treaty of Belgrade (September 18, 1739). The treaty of Belgrade was signed a few months later of the decisive Battle of Grocka, in which the Austrians suffered a severe loss and the victorious Ottomans captured Belgrade. George Olivier, Count Wallis, field marshal of the Austrians and the regent of the Habsburg Kingdom of Serbia, signed on behalf of Charles VI, the Peace Treaty of Belgrade, which marked the end of the Austro-Russian-Turkish War (1737-1739). This treaty also marked the end of the Habsburg rule in the region, since in it the Habsburg had to cede the Kingdom of Serbia with Belgrade, as well as parts of Romania, and Bosnia. Since the treaty was unfavorable to the House of Habsburg, Charles VI was very displeased and Count Wallis along with other generals involved were tried by a military tribunal and sentenced to imprisonment. The present manifesto, contains the base of the accusations against Count Wallis and other high ranked officers, detailing their conduct at the battle of Groska (Kroska), and the posterior peace treaty of Belgrade. MANILIUS, Marcus
Finely engraved port. of Bentley by Vertue, a large folding engraved plate depicting the Farnese globe, & a fine engraved headpiece. xvi, 307, [5] pp. Large 4to, cont. French red morocco, double gilt fillet round sides, flat spine gilt, with the characteristic Lamoignon green morocco labels on spine, a.e.g. London: Typis H. Woodfall, sumptibus P. & I. Vaillant, 1739. First edition of Bentley's commentary, with the text, of Manilius' Astronomicon, the earliest extant treatise on astronomy of antiquity. Bentley's commentary, his last work, is recognized as the greatest on this text and is one of the most celebrated classical editions of the 18th century. A.E. Housman, a great admirer of Bentley's genius, thought this edition "a greater work than either the Horace or the Phalaris." Provenance: From the library of Chrétien François de Lamoignon (1735-89), with his "Bibliotheca Lamoniana" booklabel on the front paste-down endpaper, crowned "L" stamped on p. 3, and characteristic date and morocco labels on spine. The Lamoignon library was due to be sold at auction in the Hague in 1791, but was bought en bloc by Thomas Payne before the sale. This book was later owned by the Hon. George Agar Ellis (1797-1833); his booklabel is on the front pastedown. Ellis was one of the MPs who pressed for the grant which bought the Angerstein collection of pictures for the nation (thus founding the National Gallery), and was himself a very considerable collector of books and pictures. He was created Baron Dover just two years before his early death at the age of only 36. A very fine and attractiv … [Click Below for Full Description]
