LINNAEUS, CARL (LINNÉ). - [LINNAEUS' VIEW OF NATURE]
Stockholm, Pet. Momma, 1739. Small 8vo. Preserved in covers of older blindstamped golden paper. Title-page a bit soiled and with old owner's names (one of them crossed out, the other one being Roland Martin). A small restoration to lower blank margin of title-page. Woodcut initial at beginning and woodcut end-vignette. (18) pp. ¶ Exceedingly rare first edition, first issue (with an excellent provenance) of Linnaeus' seminal speech which has gone down in history as one of the most famous and influential summations on the economy of nature - demonstrated by "curiosities among insects". With poetical eloquence, Linnaeus shows us the wonder of the small creature that is the insect and beautifully ties together the nature of the world that we live in, providing to all living things a means and an end. Published merely four years after the groundbreaking first edition of the "Systema Natura" - and two decades before the definitive 10th edition of it - Linnaeus, in this epochal speech, points us to the fact that only with the "Systema Natura" had the true nature of the insect been discovered, revealing to us also the true wonder of nature.

This groundbreaking speech was given at the inauguration of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm in 1739. Linnaeus himself was one of the founders of the academy; this foundational speech not only marks the beginning of the world-changing Academy of Sciences, being the first in a long series of presiding speeches that were given four times a year (when the Academy chose a new chairman), it also marks an epoch in the theory of natur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sharp (Samuel)
Printed by J. Watts: and sold by J. Roberts and J. Brotherton, 1739. FIRST EDITION, with 14 engraved plates, occasional minor soiling or staining (including apparently a mark left by a blood-stained finger, in the chapter on castration), pp. [xvi], liii, 224, 8vo, original calf, double gilt fillets on sides, rebacked (and recased) preserving original spine, one lacuna filled in, new lettering pieces, corners repaired, and the gilt rules on the spine redone, 2 faded inscriptions on title-page, the first owner's apparently, John Row, engulfed by the slightly later one of Dav. Calderwood, recording his purchase of the book in London in December 1757, price 3/-. The very rare first edition of Sharp's important treatise (the present cataloguer was looking for a copy for over 25 years): the second edition of the same year, and later editions, are relatively common. This was 'the first monograph in English on the subject and achieved eleven editions, and translations into French, Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian . Sharp proved an innovative surgical actitioner and communicator as the many editions of his books in seven European languages indicate. Nineteenth-century surgeons admired his forthrightness and skills. Louis Bégin, a French practitioner, assessed Sharp in 1825 as one of those surgeons whose works show in the highest degree the impress of an observing mind, hostile to all authority and routine. There are few diseases on which he did not put forward new ideas, few operations whose instruments or procedures he did not improve. His writings contain many things in few … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, John Pine, 1739. Printed from three plates, outer plate 380 x 610mm. A pair of sea charts of the English Channel, printed in blue, within a decorative border printed from a third plate. The left plate shows the Spanish Armada at anchor off Calais, and the eight fire-ships bearing down on them, blown by a delicately-engraved windhead. The right plate shows the Armada, having cut their anchors to escape the fire-ships, fleeing north in disarray. The decorative border has roundel portraits of Elizabeth I, Pope Sixtus V, Phillip II of Spain and Alessandro Farnese, governor of the Spanish Netherlands, and two putti weeping over the loss of life. A lighter note is struck by the text in Latin and English: 'Upon the disappearance of this mighty Fleet, the following Writing was fixed up to Pasquin at Rome. The Pope from the Plenitude of his Power will grant Indulgences for a thousand Years, if any one will inform him with certainty, what is become of the Spanish Fleet, where it is gone; whether it be taken up into Heaven, sunk down into Tartarus, suspended somewhere in the Air, or floating upon some Sea.' This is a plate from 'The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords', drawn by by Hubert-François Gravelot, engraved and published by John Pine. It depicts one of ten tapestries commissioned from the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom by Lord Howard of Effingham in 1591 to commemorate the defeat of the Armada. Unfortunately they were destroyed when the Houses of Parliament burnt down in 1834, leaving Pine’s book as the only record. It is lucky that Pine worried that … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINE, John.
London, John Pine, 1739. Later full calf gilt, marbled edges; engr. title, dedication, pp. (ii) (list of subscribers) + 24, engr. map, 10 maritime views, 10 charts printed in pairs, the views and charts printed in blue within black separately-printed decorative borders. A superb commemoration of the Spanish Armada of 1588. The book contains ten sea battle views drawn by Clement Lemprière after tapestries hanging in the House of Lords; and ten charts of the progress of the skirmishes drawn by Hubert-François Gravelot after Robert Adams, all engraved by John Pine. In 1591 Lord Howard of Effingham commissioned the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom to design ten scenes of the Spanish Armada to be made into tapestry wall-hangings by François Spierinck of Delft. In 1616 the tapestries were bought by James I, who had them hung in the House of Lords, where they remained through Revolution and Restoration, only to be destroyed when the Houses of Parliament burnt down in 1834. This left Pine’s book as the only record, so it is lucky that Pine worried that ''Time, or Accident, or moths may deface these valuable shadows'. The charts were copied from those of Robert Adam, engraved by Augustine Ryther and published in 1588. The text is an historical account of the Armada, a description of the plates and an explanation of the medals and other ornaments. MCC: 4. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

First edition. Very Scarce The Boyle Lectures were named after Robert Boyle, a prominent English/Irish natural philosopher of the 17th century. Boyle endowed a series of lectures in his will, which were designed as a forum where prominent academics could discuss the existence of God. The very first such lecture was given in 1692 by Richard Bentley, who turned to and received four letters from Isaac Newton. The aim of the lectures, as expressed by Boyle, is to prove the truth of the Christian religion against infidels, without descending to any controversies among Christians; and to answer new difficulties, scruples, etc. Some lecturers targeted Christian Deism. BRETEZ (Louis);
[Click Below for Full Description]

[city rights] Vellum with marble boards. The first work is purportedly a translation from the Italian, but in fact written by Hertel, a German jurist and professor of law, the work satirises how under the present legal system cases can be won on 'points' rather than justice being done. Legal questions are presented in the guise of snuff, and each nostril expels a solution to the problem. Both solutions follow an intrinsic logic and are backed up by extensive legal references to standard authorities. Hertel gives over two hundred individual cases, and presents argument and counter-argument for each of them. A large number of his cases cover commercial transactions, especially sales, bad debts, money-lending, interest charges, usury, etc., but also including inheritance cases, mortgage transactions and pawnshop arrangements. Great Britain.
London: Printed by Samuel Buckley, 1739. 4to (21.7 cm, 8.625"). 28 pp. Ineffectual trilingual treaty, one of two copies printed in London in the same year, this edition most likely the first. The 1739 Convention of Pardo (a.k.a. Treaty of Pardo or Convention of El Pardo) was designed to avoid a war between Spain and Great Britain over trade conflicts and the boundaries of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas by reimbursing Britain for damaged ships and creating, through a committee, plans to negotiate a neutral trading area. Despite these efforts, the War of Jenkins' Ear erupted later that year. This pamphlet presents the treaty and two separate articles with more specific details on implementation of its arrangements in French, Spanish, and English, with the British ratification statements recorded in Latin and English and the Spanish ones in Spanish and English. => Several ships are mentioned by name, and the West Indies and Puerto Rico appear as locales for conflict. ESTC T4473; Sabin 16195; not in Alden & Landis, European Americana; Goldsmiths'-Kress 07664. Removed from nonce volume, first leaf separating from text block; light age-toning, one top margin trimmed closely, light marginal pencilling on first and final leaves. => A good printed relic of a failed peace effort.

Title-page in red and black. 6 large folding engraved maps colored in outline, and 14 engraved plates and plans, all but one hand-colored, all after designs by Hasius. 1 vols. Folio. In the second part Hase presents descriptions and plans of the most important cities in the world (past and present), including Beijing, Kyoto, St Petersburg, Alexandria, Sinngan Fou, Campion, Su-Tscheu, Lima, Rome (ancient and now), Paris, London, etc. Later half black morocco and marbled paper boards, fine copy, plates and text immaculate.

Venetiis,: typis Joannis Baptistae Pasquali, 1739. Venetiis, typis Joannis Baptistae Pasquali, 1739. In-8 gr.

BIANCHI Giovanni
Venetiis,: typis Joannis Baptistae Pasquali, 1739. Venetiis, typis Joannis Baptistae Pasquali, 1739. In-8 gr. Biograf. Italiani,X, p. 105. Esemplare ben conservato.
