1739. Johannis LEUSDEN - PHILOLOGUS HEBRAEUS continens quaetiones hebraicas quae circa vetus testamentum hebraeum fere moveri solent. Editio quinta. Basilae, J. R. Thurnisios, 1739. An important comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life including Kabbalah by one of the greatest hebraists LEUSDEN (Jean), orientaliste hollandais, né à Utrecht en 1624, mort en 1699. New edition, a lovely copy of the collected works of one of Newton's disciples. Keill, a Scottish mathematician and popular author, was one of Newton's staunchest supporters and defenders. This volume, assembled by the Verbeek brothers, collects all of Keill's previously published works, and also includes additional papers by Keill on centripetal and attractive forces. / "Keill's role as propagator of Newtonian philosophy was carried out primarily through his major work, Introductio ad veram physicam. . . (1701), based on the series of experimental lectures on Newtonian natural philosophy he had been giving at Oxford since 1694. The first such lectures ever given, their attempt to derive Newton's laws experimentally did much to influence later publications. . . . Some of Keill's writings also brought hostile attacks against Newtonianism from the Continent. For example, his charge that Leibniz had plagiarized from Newton's invention of the calculus gave rise to a major dispute between English and Continental natural philosophers, in which Keill served as Newton's 'avowed Champion.'" – DSB V … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saunders, John
Pastel on paper, laid onto canvas stretched over (original?) wooden board (305 x 410 mm). This pastel was drawn by the prolific itinerant portraitist John Saunders (1682-c. 1758) at Peterborough in September 1739. Saunders is recorded as active in East Anglia, the Midlands and elsewhere in the mid-18th century (cf. Neil Jeffares, "John Saunders", Dictionary of Pastellists Before 1800 [London, 2006]). The sitter, John Sturges in Turkish costume, wearing a white turban with blue feather and golden embroidered coat, was probably drawn from a mezzotint after John Vanderbank (1694-1739) by Francis Kyte (d. 1744), published in 1733. The pastel is of interest as an example of mid-18th century depiction of Turkish costume. Saunders, perhaps in an attempt to add extra exoticism to Mr. Sturges, has included a curling moustache that is not present in the mezzotint. Sturges, an architect based in the East Midlands, is known to have collaborated with William Talman (1650-1719) at Chatsworth and Milton House in Northamptonshire. The fact that this pastel was produced in Peterborough may indicate some connection with descendants of Sturges, assuming that he himself was dead by 1739. The Fitzwilliam Museum holds a drawing of John Sturges by John Vanderbank (wash on paper, PD.1-1992). - Verso with label bearing 19th century manuscript note concerning the autograph pencil inscription by Saunders top right: ?Saunders pinxit after Mr. J[oh]n Vanderbank Peterborough Sept. anno d. 1739?. Two negligible scratches to surface, otherwise good, offered without frame.

Plate 63: This anatomy plate shows the Foetus with the umbilical cord. Depicted are furthermore; lungs, diaphragm, thymus, glands, aorta, liver etc. Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Description: This scarse / rare large original old / antique medical / anatomy print / plate originates from: 'Anatomia Corporum Humanorum' by William Cowper, 1739, latin ed. The major source of this work was the Dutch anotomist Goverd Bidloo and his landmark work titled: 'Anatomia Humani Corporis' (1685). What started as an English translation of Bidloo's work first published in 1698 ended in a court fought battle over plagiatism by Cowper. Cowper did not even mention Bidloo in his work. The famous plates in this work (by Gerard de Lairesse) are identical to the ones from Bidloo's work and actually even bought from Bidloo. Cowper added some of his own new plates. The plates are particularly valued for their artistic quality.Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is William Cowper (c. 1666 - 1709) was an English surgeon and anatomist, famous for his early description of what is now known as the Cowper's gland. Govert Bidloo or Govard Bidloo (1649 - 1713) was a Dutch Golden Age physician, anatomist, poet and playwright. He was the personal physician of William III of Orange-Nassau, Dutch stadholder and king of England.
[Click Below for Full Description]

London: 1739. Giant Folio 413 x 242This is a fine copy in its entire original state and binding and is complete and perfect with full margins and no apologies. Except for the art not a rare copy but nice to find in such a condition especially with such a sound original binding in such a museum quality condition. A museum quality pristine example of a Giant Folio by John Baskett in Oxford. A incredible unique watercolor scenic portrait is found and not called for on the first blank leaf with an elaborate and complete family history provenance from Vicor Reverend Jenkin Williams. This massive folio is the third edition printed as such by J. Baskett in Oxford. This and previous copies are known for their multiple errors as well as the 1717 Vinegar bible. In addition this copy still includes the Apocrypha although not called for and in rear is found a complete index as well as numerous tables that include tables of scriptures, measures, weights and coins. In addition there are Tables of offices and conditions of men, tables of money, time and kindred. Overall a fine example of this unique massive folio remaining in original binding.
