BOSCOVICH, Ruggero Giuseppe, or Rudjer Josip BOSCOVIC] (1711-1787)
Rome, typis Komarek in via Cursis, [1739]. 4to (220 x 161 mm), pp XI [1], with one engraved plate; a fine, unpressed copy in gilt Buntpapier wrappers. First edition of Boscovich's dissertation on a new telescope design. It presents 'an account of the principle of the circular micrometer based on the idea that the circular aperture of the objective may serve for determination of the times at which a celestial body enters and leaves the field of vision of a telescope; these values, when compared with those of a known star, give the relative positions of the two bodies' (DSB).Boscovich 'was recognized as a gifted teacher, an accomplished leader in scientific enterprises, an inventor of important instruments which are still employed (such as the ring-micrometer, etc.), and as a pioneer in developing new theories . The invention of the ring-micrometer just mentioned, which Boscovich describes in his memoir "De novo telescopii usu ad objecta coelestia determinanda" (Rome, 1739), has been ascribed without reason by some to the Dutch natural philosopher Huygens. The chief advantage of the simple measuring instrument devised by Boscovich consists in its not requiring any artificial illumination of the field of the telescope. This makes it useful in observing faint objects, as its inventor expressly points out in connexion with the comet of 1739' (Catholic Encyclopedia v 2 p 693).This is one of Boscovich's first publications.Riccardi I.1 173 n 5; Sommervogel I 1830 n 5; OCLC records American Philosophical Society, Harvard, Princeton, and Brown for North America [Attributes: First Edi … [Click Below for Full Description]

"The Power of Christ's Resurrection." LONDON: Printed for C. WHITEFIELD, in the Year MDCCXXXIX _____________________________________________________________________________ George Whitefield was born on December 16, 1714 at the Bell Inn, Gloucester, England, and died in Newburyport, Massachusetts on September 30, 1770. In contemporary accounts, he, not John Wesley, is spoken of as the supreme figure and even as the founder of Methodism. He was famous for his preaching in America which was a significant part of the an 18th century movement of Christian revivals, sometimes called "The Great Awakening." In 1738 Whitefield preached a series of revivals in Georgia. Here he established the Bethesda Orphanage, which still exists to this day. In Georgia there was originally a prohibition on slavery. However in 1749 there was a movement to introduce it there, which Whitefield supported. He owned slaves who worked at the orphanage, and these were bequeathed to the Countess of Huntingdon when he died. When he returned to America in November, 1739 he preached nearly every day for months to large crowds of sometimes several thousand people as he travelled throughout the colonies, especially New England. Like his contemporary and acquaintance, Jonathan Edwards, Whitefield preached with a Calvinist theology. He was known for his powerful voice and hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

COWPER, William
Leyden: Johann Arnold Langerak, 1739. FIRST LATIN EDITION. Large folio. (51 x 36 cm.) Printed title+ll.68. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with raised bands, red label and fine ornate gilt tooling to the panels, red edges. Spine ends slightly bruised, a few minor scuffs, generally a very nice clean copy in a handsome binding. Illustrated with engraved additional title and 114 full page plates of which 34 are folding (numbered 1-105 plus 9 supplementary). First Edition in Latin with additional engraved vignette to title page. William Cowper (1666-1709) practised surgery in London and devoted himself to dissection and anatomical delineations. He published the first edition of The Anatomy of Humane Bodies in 1698. Of the 114 plates only 9 were original to Cowper, the remaining plates were originally used in Govert Bidloo's impressive anatomical atlas published in Amsterdam in 1685. This was a blatant act of plagiarism. Bidloo was under the impression that Cowper was producing an English version of his work and contacted Cowper when he was in London offering him further unpublished observations. Cowper told him that he did not understand Latin well enough to undertake such a task . However, meanwhile Cowper had purchased in Holland three hundred sets of Bidloo's plates, including the title page on to which he pasted his own name. In fact it is possible to see in the first edition the original title underneath Cowper's. Cowper added a few plates, made a few additions, translated the text in to English (although Russell argues that Cowpers text is original) and then published th … [Click Below for Full Description]

HENDRIK VAN ALPHEN
HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS GERMANY, 1739. HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS GERMANY. Very Good. 1739. Leather Spine. On offer is a superb, original historical early 18th Century travel journal of three [3] Dutch men, Daniel van Alphen, P. van Dorp and the writer of the journal Hendrik van Alphen (1708-1764) who travel from Holland to Germany from April 9th 1739 through late summer. Hendrik is listed on Dutch genealogical sites as a 'koopman' or in English a merchant and given the many references that include numbers the approximately 8 x 10 inch very full 133 hand numbered page book is unlike diaries there is little detail of the daily doings but rather Hendrik described landscape and the community, where they were, how long the journey from one city to another city took and why in some cases the trip took longer than planned. The influence of Daniel van Alphen, whom was probably a registrar during the journey, is very clear in the journal. On every location that the authors arrived a specific attention is paid to the religious situation in that city or village. Matters such as the number of churches in the city and the friction between the different groups of the church were described. The landscape of the cities are also described with detail and some background information, which makes the journal very enigmatic and interesting to wonder the true intent of their visit if one is driven to whimsy! The trip lasted at least from Vollenhove (The Netherlands) to Hanau (Germany). The author even mentions being in Heinheim a few times, but this is now most likely known as … [Click Below for Full Description]

With Cases Adjudged in the Court of King's Bench, Upon the Several Clauses of Them. In a Method Entirely New. [London]: Printed by E. And R. Nutt, And R. Gosling, (Assigns of E. Sayer, Esq;) for T. Woodward, 1739. [xxxii], 284, [20] pp. Includes one-page publisher advertisement. Octavo (7-3/4" x 4-3/4"). Recent period-style three-quarter calf over cloth, endpapers renewed. Light toning to text, worming to lower margins to preliminaries and first three leaves of main text carefully mended, internally clean. * First edition. Apparently the first book arranged chronologically, this digested compilation of legislation and related case law was intended for sheriffs and justices of the peace. Each act is followed by a set of illustrative cases. Foley plan also demonstrates the evolution of poor laws. "In a word, from a view of the progress of the several Acts of Parliament, the reader sees in an historical light the particular inconveniences each was to guard against, and so enters into the wisdom of the Legislature" [vi]. This was a well-received work. Later editions were published in 1743, 1751 and 1758. Not in Goldsmiths.' English Short-Title Catalogue T113188. [Attributes: First Edition]

PASSERI, Giovanni Battista.
Pesaro: [Niccolo] Gavelli, 1739. 3 vols bound in 2, folio (346 × 220 mm), pp. [xvi], xxviii, 92; [x], xii, 73, [1]; [viii], xvi, 147, [1]. First title printed in red and black, engraved vignettes to all titles, complete with 322 engraved plates and several engraved vignettes. Contemporary mottled calf, expertly rebacked to style preserving the original labels. Slightly rubbed with corners worn. Quicke family armorial bookplate to first vol., early inscription (John Quicke) to second title. An excellent copy. First edition of this celebrated illustrated account of Passeri's collection of oil-lamps. The collection was feted in its day as the best of its kind, but scholars have subsequently proved Passeri to have been the most gullible of collectors and that his collection consisted almost entirely of fakes. The work is thus a rather remarkable testimony to the unfortunate fervour of an eighteenth-century collector. The frontispiece in volume 1 is a portrait of the Archbishop Friderico Lantio de Ruvere, engraved by Carlo Gregori after Giuseppe Menabuoni; emblematic title vignette by Giovanni Battista Passeri, engraved by Vincenzo Franceschini. The plates and head- and tail-pieces, are engraved after Giuseppe Menabuoni, mainly by Vincenzo Franceschini. . Order directly from our website for free shipping worldwide.
