LABELYE, Charles.
FIRST EDITION. Westminster Bridge was the first major bridge to be built over an English river for more than a century, and was also only the second masonry bridge over the Thames. The controversial choice as the architect was the Swiss engineer Charles Lebelye, who employed a novel method of founding the piers; they were built inside timber caissons which had been towed out and sunk onto excavations prepared for them in the bed of the river. Once the masonry was laid the timber sides were removed, leaving a flat base for the pier. This system had never been used before in this country and nowhere before on such a large scale, and much of Labelye's book is given over to describing it. The book appeared a year after the start of construction. The plan mentioned on the title-page was published later and separately, and is given a separate number by Skempton. Skempton 812.

First edition. Very Scarce The Boyle Lectures were named after Robert Boyle, a prominent English/Irish natural philosopher of the 17th century. Boyle endowed a series of lectures in his will, which were designed as a forum where prominent academics could discuss the existence of God. The very first such lecture was given in 1692 by Richard Bentley, who turned to and received four letters from Isaac Newton. The aim of the lectures, as expressed by Boyle, is to prove the truth of the Christian religion against infidels, without descending to any controversies among Christians; and to answer new difficulties, scruples, etc. Some lecturers targeted Christian Deism. The Boyle lectures were revived in 2004 at St Mary-le-Bow church in the City of London by Dr Michael Byr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Behrens, Karl Friedrich]: [Roggeveen, Jacob]
Aux depens de la Compagnie, The Hague, 1739. Two volumes. [12],224; [4],254pp. Half titles. 12mo. Later full polished calf, gilt, spine with raised bands, leather labels, marbled endpapers. Minor shelf wear, joints slightly rubbed. A clean, near fine copy. In a modern buckram slipcase. The first French edition of Behrens' REISE DURCH DIE SÜD- LÄNDER UND UM DIE WELT, an account of Jacob Roggeveen's 1721-22 Pacific voyage, which provided important impetus for further exploration for the great Southern Continent. "Roggewein's is the first certified account of contact with Easter Island and its great stone images, as well as the last of the great Dutch circumnavigations" - Cox. The author was a sergeant and commander of marines on the voyage. Contemporary accounts of Roggeveen's explorations were first published in Dutch in 1728 and in German beginning in 1735. This French translation was based on the Frankfurt and Leipzig edition of 1737. "Though some attribute the translation to Charles de Brosses, [Charles Pierre Claret] Fleurieu believed that the style of language revealed the efforts of a non- native speaker. With the text often more a paraphrasing of the German version than a direct translation, Fleurieu and others credit Behrens himself with the translation" - Hill. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 739/21. SABIN 4379. HILL 99. COX I, p.51. BORBA DE MORAES, p.95. HOWGEGO R63 (for Roggeveen).

1739. Johannis LEUSDEN - PHILOLOGUS HEBRAEUS continens quaetiones hebraicas quae circa vetus testamentum hebraeum fere moveri solent. Editio quinta. Basilae, J. R. Thurnisios, 1739. An important comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life including Kabbalah by one of the greatest hebraists LEUSDEN (Jean), orientaliste hollandais, né à Utrecht en 1624, mort en 1699.

This volume, assembled by the Verbeek brothers, collects all of Keill's previously published works, and also includes additional papers by Keill on centripetal and attractive forces. / "Keill's role as propagator of Newtonian philosophy was carried out primarily through his major work, Introductio ad veram physicam. . . (1701), based on the series of experimental lectures on Newtonian natural philosophy he had been giving at Oxford since 1694. The first such lectures ever given, their attempt to derive Newton's laws experimentally did much to influence later publications. . . . Some of Keill's writings also brought hostile attacks against Newtonianism from the Continent. For example, his charge that Leibniz had plagiarized from Newton's invention of the calculus gave rise to a major dispute between English and Continental natural philosophers, in which Keill served as Newton's 'avowed Champion.'" – DSB V … [Click Below for Full Description]
