Paris: Chez Gissey, Bordelet, Ganeau, 1739].First edition of the first part, early edition of the second part. [ Together with: ] [ Aubert de la Chesnaye Desbois, François-Alexandre]. Lettre ¡a Madame la Comtesse D***. Pour servir de Supplément à l'amusement Philosophique sure le langage des Bétes. [Paris: 1739?]. Twelvemo. 46 pp. Bound together in contemporary mottled calf, gilt-decorated spine with burgundy morocco label. . Twelvemo. Light wear at binding extremities. A very good copy. Bougéant (1690-1743) was a Jesuit and teacher of classics at the College of Caen and Nevers. His Amusement philosophiques sur le langage des betes was a satirical work, attacking the Cartesian tenet that animals do not have souls and function as machines, and thus are unworthy of our compassion. Bougéant contends that animals may have souls, but they are the souls of demons, and hence animals are again, not worthy of our kindness. This work resulted in Bougéant's exile from Paris.Aubert de la Chesnaye-Desbois (1699-1824), the author of Dictionnaire de la Noblesse de France (1770-1786) and other dictionaries, condemns Bougéant's satire.

Sogar genealogische Tabellen der adeligen Geschlechter und Karten, die die damaligen örtlichen Verhältnisse zur Anschauung bringen, hat er seiner Darstellung beigefügt. Parliament goes to war after Robert Jenkins displays his detached ear.[GEORGE II].Broadside, "His Majesty's Declaration of War Against the King of Spain,"John Bassett, printer, London, October 19, 1739, 16 x 21 in., with contemporary manuscript notes and docketing, October 23, 1739.This document launched what was known as the War of Jenkins's Ear, 1739 – 1748, which became a part of the larger War of Austrian Succession after three years. After being accused of piracy, Robert Jenkins, captain of a British merchant ship, had his ear cut off following the boarding of his vessel by the Spanish coastal guard in 1731. Jenkins then allegedly exhibited his severed ear in Parliament the next year. The broadside cites the predations of Spanish privateers in the West Indies as the cause of hostilities. A manuscript note reads "This Declaration of War was published in solemn form at the usual places in London on Tuesday 23d October 1739." Seven copies are listed in the English Short Title Catalog of the British Library.ConditionGood. Moderate wear.
