[Paris: 1739 or 1740]. Folio (22 x 17 4/8 inches). Fine folding engraved key map, and 20 double-page engraved sheets that combine to make one exceptionally large plan of Paris (ca 98 inches x 127 inches) by Claude Lucas after Louis Bretez (sheets 18 and 19, with the title cartouche, joined and folding) (a bit browned throughout). A MAGNIFICENT AND DETAILED PLAN OF PARIS: AN ISOMETRIC PERSPECTIVE FROM THE SOUTHEAST COMPOSED OF 20 SEPARATE ENGRAVED SHEETS. The area covered by this extraordinary map includes roughly the first eleven arrondissements of modern Paris, and is a fine and beautiful representation of the capital before the transformation made to the city by Napoleon III and Haussmann. At the time of this survey France, and so Paris, was effectively being ruled, with King Louis XV's assent, by Cardinal de Fleury. Tennent, Gilbert; Samuel Blair
J. Draper for D. Henchman, Boston, 1739. Modern 3/4 morocco over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt titles, top edge gilt, (signed binding by Trout). [4], vii, [1], 275 pages. (6 3/4" x 4 1/2"). Signatures: A-S8. Includes several sermons by Gilbert Tennent and one, "The Great Glory of God" by Samuel Blair. Tennent (1703-1764), American Presbyterian clergyman and evangelist, participated in the revival movement, the Great Awakening, in the Middle colonies and New England. It is claimed that though Gilbert Tennent is outshined by men such as Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, his (Tennent's) contribution to the Great Awakening were no less significant. that among friends and promotors of the revival he stood pre-eminent. In addition to "Riches of Christ" book contains the following Tennent Sermons: "An Exhortation to Walk in Christ"; "The Duty of Self-Examination"; "The Divinity of the Sacred Scriptures and the Dangers of Covetousness"; "The Legal Bow bent": "The Solemn Scene of the last Judgement"; The Preciousness of Christ to Believers." Pages trimmed not effecting text, paper repair to title page edge. Remains a very good, clean, tight copy of a rare colonial imprint by an important religious figure. Clear English text throughout, just light toning and a few small blemishes. A well preserved copy of this early edition. Referenced by ESTC T96272. ** Henry Bracken, M.D. (1697–1764), was a writer on farriery. Bracken was the son of Henry Bracken of Lancaster, and was baptised there 31 October 1697. About 1746 he was charged with abetting the Jacobite rebels and thrown into prison, but was discharged without trial, there appearing to have been no ground for his arrest; indeed, he had previously rendered a service to the king by intercepting a messenger to the rebels, and sending the letters to the general of the king's forces, and for this act he had been obliged to keep out of the way of the Pretender's followers. He received much honour in his native town, and was twice elected mayor — in 1747-48 and 1757-58. In his method of practice as a medical man he was remarkably simple, discarding many of the usual nostrums. In private life he was liberal, generous, charitable, and popular; but his love of horse-racing, of conviviality, and of smuggling, which he called gambling with the king, prevented him from reaping or … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stockholm, Pet. Momma, 1739. 4:o. 28 s.

First edition. This seems to have been a genuinely new arrangement of material with examples of case law included exemplifying changes of legislation. 'It would have been tedious to have had the several Acts of Parliament upon this subject thrown together without intermission: the cases are therefore interspersed, and follow the very clauses of each Act from which they derive their force and efficacy. ...... In a word, from a view of the progress of the several Acts of Parliament, the reader sees in an historical light the particular inconveniences each was to guard against, and so enters into the wisdom of the Legislature'.

Anon. Stockholm, Kongliga Lantmäteri Contoiret circa 1760. Coloured copper engraving, image: 48 x 56 cm.
- The detailed map shows Närke, a Swedish traditional province, in south central Sweden. The map was published separetely by Kongliga Lantmäteri Contoiret (Royal Institute of Surveyors). The institute started publishing separately issued maps of Sweden in 1739 with a goal to map the country in uniform maps. The first map was the grand "Charta öfwer Mälaren" by Jacob Nordencreutz. The maps Upland, Västmanland, Södermanland, Nerike, Skåne and a map of Sweden were issued in the 1740s and early 1750s. The next map - map of Medelpad – was not published until 1769. It was followed by the series of maps in the next 25 years, the last one being „harta öfver Heinola Höfdingedöme" in 1793. Many parts of the country were not covered. The maps were never sold bound in an atlas since the project was never finished.
