Plate 202, The Palm or Date Tree

London 1739 - In 1737, Elizabeth Blackwell (1700-17587) produced a delightful volume, “A Curious Herbal”, containing many decorative plates of various plants. Such herbals, illustrating and describing plants for their alleged medicinal powers, were the medical books of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This splendid, hand-colored engraving from “A Curious Herbal,” Plate 202, The Palm or Date Tree, measures 18” x 11.25” and is in very good condition with light staining on the left edge and evidence of verso page text. Illustrated on this engraving is the frond and fruit of a date tree, a type of palm. Date trees are popular for their very sweet fruits, illustrated in a vibrant yellow-orange color. Adding a scientific aspect to this aesthetic engraving is the labeling of the husk with flower, the fruit and the stone, or pit of the fruit. In the 18th century, talented and fiercely independent women seem to have flourished in the field of botanical illustration and Mrs. Blackwell, neither an artist nor a botanist, was suddenly faced with the problem of obtaining her doctor husband’s release from a debtor’s prison, where he was languishing after an abortive foray into the printing business. On the advice of Sir Hans Sloane, the famous London Physician and patron of naturalists, who had told her that a herbal of medicinal plants was needed, the resourceful lady set herself up in lodgings near the Chelsea Physic Garden, founded by the Society of Apothecaries on a piece of land donated by Sloane, and proceeded to make drawings of the appropriate plants and herbals. The result of her initiative and labors was “A Curious Herbal”, with 500 hand-colored copperplate engravings. The indirect result was Dr. Alexander Blackwell’s release from prison. Her efforts on his behalf certainly seem worthwhile today to anyone looking at “A Curious Herbal”.

Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688 – 1761), known as the abbé Pluche, was a French priest. He is now known for his Spectacle de la Nature, a most popular work of natural history. Pluche, son of a baker, was born in Rheims, in a street now named after him. He became a teacher of rhetoric. The Bishop of Laon made him head of the town's college, a post he accepted to escape judicial consequences of opposing the papal bull Unigenitus (1713). His Spectacle de la Nature, was published in 1732, and widely translated all over Europe. Although it influenced many to become naturalists, it was a work of popularization, not of science. The work contains dialogues on insects, caterpillars, silk-worms, spiders, wasps, bees, flies, testaceous animals, birds, terestrial animals, fishes, plants, flowers, gardens, grafting, pruning, olive trees, fruits, esculents plants and roots, sallets, husbandry, corn and other grain, vines, wine, woods, pastture and meadow-grounds, rivers, fountains, ascent of vapours from the sea, mountains, the sea, the air, fossils, quarries, mines, study of the heavens, the night, the moon, the azure of the heaven, the aurora, the sun, propagation of light, ways of the light and the wonders of vision, the colours, the shade, the place and uses of fire, theory of fire, physics, invention of the zodiac, the polar star, the discovery of the roundness of the earth, invention of the globes, the Mariner's Compass, the discovery of the East and West Indies, the telescope, the microscope, systematic physics, the motion of the plants. GOOD COPY.         Anatomia do corpo humano, recopilada com doutrinas medicas, chimicas, filosoficas, mathematicas, com indices, e estampas, representantes todas as partes do corpo humano.

Lisboa Occidental, Antonio Pedrozo Galram, 1739. - Woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and initials. (40 ll.), 471 pp., 18 engraved plates. 4°, contemporary sheep (somewhat worn, especially at the corners, lacks front free endleaf, rear free endleaf loose), spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments, morocco label (slightly chipped), gilt letter, text block edges rouged. Recent inscription in light blue ink in upper outer blank corner of title-page. Many manuscript notations on front pastedown endleaf, blank verso of final leaf, and final endleaves. Internally very good to fine; overall good to very good. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. This is generally acknowledged to be the first such work in the Portuguese language, and the best work on anatomy in Portuguese of its time. Ferreira de Mira, paraphrasing Serrano, states that "no seu tempo não havia outro tão bom no nosso idioma" (p. 205).In 1732 Santucci (a native of Cortona, Italy) came at the invitation of D. João V to replace the controversial Monravá e Roca as professor of anatomy at the Hospital de Todos os Santos in Lisbon. This work was written (but not published) in Santucci's native Italian, then translated by Celestino Seguineau. Monravá e Roca, still practicing in Lisbon, published a scathing attack on Santucci's @Anatomia in the same year: @Desterro critico de falsas anatomias. (Monravá's own works on anatomy are considered to have serious flaws.) Santucci's careful teaching style was the opposite of Monravá's, and apparently aroused such dislike among physicians and surgeons that D. João dismissed Santucci in 1747.The well-executed plates show the skeletal, muscular and circulatory systems, the structure of the brain, eye, ear, and so on. Of particular interest are plates VI and VIII, which show the fetus @in utero and a five-month fetus standing upright, the better to display its developing organs. Twenty-six of the preliminary leaves give detailed explanations of each part of each illustration. The engraver, Miguel le Bouteux (i.e. Jean Baptiste Michel le Bouteux, 1682-1764) came to Portugal under D. João V and worked there from 1728 until his death. Soares judges him the superior of Debrie and Rochefort, his compatriots who came to Portugal at the same time. The catalogue of the Faculdade de Medicina of Lisbon calls for 26 unnumbered leaves following the text. This is probably an error, since there are 26 leaves describing the plates among the 40 preliminary leaves. The collation given in @NUC agrees with our copy. Innocêncio calls for one fewer preliminary leaf.---- Innocêncio I, 384 and XIII, 398: calling for only 39 preliminary leaves; "não apparecem muitos exemplares." Lisbon, Faculdade de Medicina, @Catálogo da colecção portuguesa I, 273-4. National Library of Medicine, @Eighteenth-Century STC p. 301: calling for only 471 pp. Pires de Lima, @Catálogo da Biblioteca da Escola Médico-Cirurgica do Porto 3633: calling for 471 pp., 26 unnumbered pp., plus 18 plates.         New Principles of Gardening: or, the laying out and planting parterres, groves, wildernesses, labyrinths, avenues, parks, &c. . with experimental directions for raising the several kinds of fruit-trees, forest-trees, ever-greens and flowering-shrubs with which gardens are adorn'd . Second Edition

printed for A. Bettesworth and C. Hitch . [and others], London 1739 - Contemporary calf, covers bordered with a gilt double fillet, rebacked with the spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, endpapers renewed An important and influential work on landscape gardening. Langley was an early champion of the freer style of landscaping which was to dominate landscape and garden design in the 18th century. According to Blanche Henrey, Langley's ideas were probably influenced by his contact with Charles Bridgeman, Alexander Pope and William Kent, and she goes on to note: "In the introduction [to the present work] Langley declares that there is nothing 'more shocking than a stiff regular garden; where after we have seen one quarter thereof, the very same is repeated in all the remaining parts'. He believed that a garden should consist of what he calls 'regular irregularities'. For instance, groves must not be planted like orchards 'with their trees in straight lines ranging every way, but in a rural manner, as if they had receiv'd their situation from nature itself'. Langley stipulated that views should be as extensive as possible and he is much in favour of ha-ha's . Langley, like Switzer, decried the art of topiary and cut parterres, and encouraged meandering paths, and the use of fine trees for shade. New principles of gardening contains descriptions of the principles of geometry as applied to garden design, and rules concerning the situation and disposition of gardens in a rural manner. There are directions concerning the culture of fruit trees, forest trees, and shrubs, and there are also details concerning the names, medicinal properties, and culture of the plants of the kitchen and physic gardens. The illustrations include geometrical diagrams, garden plans, and designs for ruins suitable for the termination of walks" (Henrey, British Botanical and Horticultural Literature before 1800 , II, p 499). The present second edition, composed of sheets of the first edition with a cancel title, is quite scarce. Bradley Bibliography III, p.108; Harvard.         Della natura de' Fiumi. Trattato fisico-matematico del dott. Domenico Guglielmini.

With title-page in red & black, with an engraved vignette on the title-page and 30 double-page engraved plates by Jan Schenk. 19th-century half-calf, with marbled sides.

BAL 3929 (note); cf. Berlin Kat. 2253 (1739 ed.); STCN (1739 ed.); not in Fowler. Very rare second edition of this classic set of architectural construction drawings in 30 large double-page plates primarily showing staircases and their decoration, but with the last five plates covering skylights intended for stairwells, some in the form of elaborate cupolas. The plates show straight, spiral and more complicated staircases, with their geometrical constructions, as well as many elaborate decorative forms for the posts, railings, skylights, etc. The publisher of the undated plates-volume was active from 1793 to post-1825, but both the French "modern" types (perhaps from Gando) and the watermark of the preliminaries (Voorn 100) point to a date around 1810. The plates are printed on unwatermarked wove paper. The first endleaf has an 1825 presentation inscription from the board of the Genootschap Mathesis Scientiarum Genitria in Leiden to Johannes Holtz, who taught architectural drawing and mathematics at their school (it is signed by P. Koppeschaar and A. van de Snoek).A few plates with brown stains, mostly in the margins, small marginal tears (some repaired) or minor offsetting. A very good copy of Horst's famous staircase book.

        Le Siege de Calais

The Hague: Jean Neaume, 1739 The Hague, A La Haye, chez Jean Neaume, 1739. Troisieme Edition [third edition]. All text in French. 12mo, 307 pp. Period mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers red-stained page edges. Some peripheral wear, front pastedown with damage from removal of a bookplate, else near fine. In absolutely remarkable condition for a book in the later years of its third century. A historical romance by the feisty Mme. de Tencin - Mme. Claudine Alexandrine Guerin De Tencin. Disparaged by some during her lifetime and since, Mme de Tencin nonetheless insouciantly produced three romances, and later in life managed a...uhhh...salon...often visited by the leading thinkers in France at the time, Montesquieu, Fontenell, and Marivaux being among them. The "woman of intellect and letters but of unpleasant character" thereafter stood the test of time - most copies of this novel which survive are from an 1885 re-issue, more than 160 years after she originally penned it. The Oxford Companion of French Literature calls this title "an indifferent historical novel in which the simple narrative of Froissart is tricked out with episodes of modern gallantry." Sniff. Nonetheless, the second of the three successful and popular romances written by Tencin, an energetic, bright and assertive writer. L6

(Note: L.C. Valckenaer, 1715-1785, a pupil of T. Hemsterhuis, and after him the greatest Dutch classical scholar of the 18th century. Hemsterhuis advised his students to use especially the lexica of the ancient lexicographers. These works could be of great use for the understanding of textual problems and the amending of texts of classical authors, and they were of great help to gain a profound knowledge of the Greek language and its vocabulary. Valckenaer chose an unpublished work of the Greek grammarian Ammonius, who lived probably in the first or second century A.D. This edition, the editio princeps of 'De adfinium vocabulorum differentia' is Valckenaer's first fruit, and it made his name. The first part consists of the work of Ammonius and several other unpublished grammatici, the second part consists of Valckenaer's notes on Ammonius, and a specimen of the scholia from the 'codex Vossianus'. The untertaking proved to be successful, because it resulted in his appointment as professor of Greek at the University of Franeker in 1741.

The Hague: la Compagnie, 1739. Two volumes bound in one, small octavo, both titles in red and black, bound with both half-titles; contemporary blind-embossed vellum, manuscript label on spine. Roggeveen at Easter Island. A handsome copy of Roggeveen's voyage into the Pacific. Behrens' scarce narrative tells the story of one of the most significant of the Dutch voyages, ranking with those of Le Maire, Schouten and Tasman. Roggeveen set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed, but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries, with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time. Roggeveen crossed the Pacific from the east at the head of a three-vessel expedition with largely commercial objectives. He specifically sought the fabled continent of Terra Australis, which the English privateer Captain Edward Davis claimed to have sighted in 1680. It did not materialise, but on 5 April 1722 Roggeveen landed at a previously uncharted island which he named Easter Island. They were the first recorded European visitors to the island and the detailed description of the inhabitants, their extraordinary idols and their way of life is of great value. The expedition later went on to discover some of the outer islands of the Samoan group. Because he had sailed for the Dutch West India Company Roggeveen was temporarily imprisoned by the powerful Dutch East India Company in Batavia, but later released to complete 'one of the last of the great Dutch circumnavigations' (Howgego). Apart from a conspicuously rare pamphlet published in 1727, and the equally rare Dutch Tweejaarige reyze rondom de wereld of 1728, this was the first major notice of this important voyage, not only a substantial Pacific voyage in its own right, but one which provided a direct stimulus for the search for the Southern Continent. Behrens' account of the Roggeveen voyage was originally published in German in 1737, but this first French edition is generally preferred. It was likely translated and amended by Behrens himself, who travelled under Roggeveen as commander of marines, though some authorities have attributed the translation to De Brosses. Although Roggeveen's voyage failed in its primary objective, it represented an important achievement in terms of its own discoveries. The Behrens account had some effect on subsequent voyages, including providing strong motivation for the authorities who sent Captain Cook out on his first voyage forty-six years later. 'Sunday 13th (March 1774). In stretching in for the land we discovered people and those Moniments or Idols mentioned by the Authors of Roggeweins Voyage which left us no room to doubt but it was Easter Island…' (Beaglehole, Journals of Captain James Cook, II, p. 338).
