      G. Smith, In Stanhope-street near Clare-market, et al, 1739. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Seven of the ten volumes of this set, published in 1739 and 1740 (these volumes). Volume 1 contains the alegorical frontispiece indicating that no branch of natural philosophy is foreign to the society. In addition, each volume has thirteen numbered engraved plates, mostly folding, of which plate 5 in volume 4 and plate 9 in volume 5 are missing, apparently never having been bound in. Contemporary full calf with simple gilt panelling on the covers and rules across the spine, simple blind-embossed borders within the panels, raised bands and volume numbers in gilt arabic numerals on spine, "BADDAM'S MEMOIRS" on red Morocco labels gilt bordered. All page edges red-sprinkled. The condition of the bindings is worn, with some splitting of joints and parting of paper at hinges, but still strong, with no incipient detaching of boards. Occasional loose free endpaper. Text pages and plates with little if any foxing. Pagination: (vi),516,(8); 516,(4); 1-512,489( mis-numbered page 513),(7);506,(6);514,(5+blank); 515,blank +(4); 516,(4).Usual double free endpapers of this period. The provenance, going back through time is indicated by the bookplates of a recent FRS, of John Hallifax, displaying his arms as granted in 1788 and finally the pioneer inventor and mill-owner Jedediah Strutt who partnered Richard Arkwright in the world's first water-powered cotton mill in Cromford,Derbyshire, which still largely survives as a shell, and later set up giant mills of his own in Belper and Milford, sadly almost completely lost in the carpet demolition of the 60's. His small ornate-lettered "Jedh. Strutt" bookplate is attached to the top corner of each front pastedown.

[8], ccli, 708; [4], 709-1669pp. Paris: Briasson, 1739. 390 x 250 mm. Blind-stamped vellum ca. 1739, leather spine labels, vellum on spines cracked and peeling with some loss in Vol. 2, light soiling. Occasional faint foxing but very good. Bookplate of the Ramsgate Monastery in each volume. $ First Edition of the first continent-wide union catalogue of manuscripts, compiled by Bernard de Montfaucon, a scholar and Benedictine monk best known for founding the discipline of paleography with his Palaeographia Graeca (1708; see Printing and the Mind of Man 175). The 1669-page Bibliotheca bibliothecarum catalogued all the manuscript libraries in France and Italy with which Montfaucon was familiar, as well as a few in Germany, the Netherlands and England. Its emphasis was on medieval and Renaissance texts. Montfaucon began with a list of all the libraries, institutional and private, for which he published holdings. These included the well-known collections and those of medieval monasteries such as Bobbio, Corbie and Fulda, as well as lesser-known monastic libraries. This was followed by a 250-page index of authors and codices, and then with a list of the manuscript contents of libraries by country beginning with Italy and the Vatican Library. The work ended with another 160-page index of authors and “rerum” (things). The comprehensive indices make it possible to locate manuscript texts by author and subject. As such it remains the most useful tool for checking the distribution of manuscript texts in European libraries, and their survival in institutions up to the first third of the eighteenth century. $3750

Paris, 1739. Folio. (21 3/4 x 17 inches). Folding index map hand-coloured in outline and very large perspective plan on 20 sheets by Claude Lucas after Louis Bretez, sheets 18 and 19 joined as issued, decorative engraved border with fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, title in elaborate figural cartouche. Contemporary red morocco, covers with arms of the city of Paris in gilt, spine gilt in compartments with Fleurs-de-lys, olive morocco lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, gilt edgesProvenance: Mr. de Barraly (armorial bookplate)First edition of the monumental Turgot plan of Paris: a cartographical tour-de-force.The 20 sheets of this impressive atlas form a single enormous plan, which when joined would be approximately 8.25 x 10.5 feet. The map covers an area approximately corresponding to the first eleven of the modern-day arrondissements and is the best 18th century plan of Paris. In 1734, Michel-Étienne Turgot, chief of the municipality of Paris, in order to promote the reputation of Paris commissioned a new map of the city. He asked Louis Bretez, member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and professor of perspective, to draw up the plan of Paris and its suburbs. As Turgot requested a very faithful map with great accuracy, for two years Bretez was allowed to enter into the mansions, houses and gardens of the city in order to take precise measurements. In the eighteenth century, the trend was to abandon the Rennaissance-style portraits of cities for geometric plans, as technically and mathematically superior. The Turgot plan, however, on an isometric projection oriented toward the southeast, uses a system of perspective cavaliere: two buildings of the same size are represented by two drawings of the same size, whether the buildings are close or distant. The effect is a mesmerizing bird's eye view which shows the city in all its magnificence.Claude Lucas, engraver of the Royal Academy of Sciences, masterfully engraved the plan, which was published between 1739 and 1740. The map was bound in elegant volumes and offered to the King, the members of the Academy, the Municipality, and important visiting dignitaries. The best 18th century plan of Paris, and among the most impressive of all city plans.Brunet I:1224; Cohen de Ricci 807; Boutier 219.

Græciæ Antiquæ Tabula Geographica Cujus Quinque Majores Partes Sunt Macedonia, Thessalia, Epirus, Achaia et Peloponnesus.

Covens & Mortier, Amsterdam 1739 - This striking 1739 map depicts ancient Greece and the several islands in the Aegean Sea. Covers from Dalmatia east to the Sea of Marmara and south to Cythera or Kithira, Incredibly detailed, the map notes several important cities and towns, lakes, rivers, and beautifully rendered topography. The map identifies several ancient locales throughout. In good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold. Some offsetting and minor foxing. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.Based on the earlier plates by Nicolas Sanson (1600 - 1667), who is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. Hard to find. Map. Uncolored engraving.         Zaide, reine de Grenade, ballet heroique

      - Chez l'auteur, A Paris 1739, In-Folio (27x38cm), (4) 114pp. (1), relié. - Prima edizione, molto raro. Legatura in pieno periodo di pelle di pecora marrone maculato. Indietro con i nervi decorati. parte del titolo in marocchino rosso.

Paris, 1739 - Turgot's monumental plan of Paris in full red morocco binding First edition, folio (560 by 450mm), folding key sheet, 20 double-page engraved maps, plates 18 and 19 joined, full red morocco, lavishly gilt, crest of the City of Paris to upper lower board, gilt, rebacked. Turgot?Äôs fine plan of Paris during the reign of Louis XV, which, if joined, would measure some 2360 by 2400mm.In 1734 Michel-?âtienne Turgot (1690-1751), Mayor of Paris, decided to promote the reputation of Paris to Parisian, provincial and foreign elites by implementing a new plan of the city. He asked Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and professor of perspective, to draw up the plan of Paris and its suburbs.Louis Bretez began his work in 1734, and was given permission by Turgot to enter all the mansions, houses and gardens in Paris, in order to gain accurate measurements and drawings. The endeavour would take two years. Turgot depicts Paris in isometric projection, a slightly more scientifically rigourous example of the seventeenth century birds-eye view. This was somewhat against the grain of cartographic thinking at the time, with many cartographers abandoning the visually appeal birds-eye view, for the more scientifically accurate geometric plan.In 1736, Claude Lucas, engraver of the Royal Academy of Sciences, engraved the 21 copper sheets of the plan. The plan was published in 1739, and the prints were bound in volumes offered to the King, the members of the Academy, and the Municipality. Additional copies were to serve as representations of France to foreigners. Millard 39.

Paris: Chez Andre Cailleau 1739 - From the library of one of the Framers, Robert R. Livingston: Amand de la Chapelle. MEMOIRES POUR SERVIR A L’HISTOIRE DE POLOGNE AVEC LES REMARQUES SUR LE GOUVERNEMENT DE CE ROYAUME POUR SERVIR D’INTELLIGENCE A CES MEMOIRES. Paris: Chez Andre Cailleau, 1739. Small 8vo. The text is completely in French. 20 Pages if preliminary remarks followed by 400 pages of text. Fine in contemporary mottled calf with marbled endpapers. The front endpaper bears the bookplate of Rob. R. Livingston, Esq. of Clermont (1718-1775), a member of the famous upstate New York land-owning family and the second Lord of Livingston Manor. His son, Robert R. Livingston, later known as the Chancellor, was a delegate from New York to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in the spring of 1776 and was appointed as one of the five members of the committee to draft a Declaration of Independence for the thirteen colonies, the others being John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Roger Sherman. Clermont, their seat in southern Columbia County in upstate New York, had an extensive library and this Memoire is a wonderful example of the historical works they had assembled. Although the Chancellor was not one of the signers of the Declaration, as he had come back to New York to conduct business and was not able to return to Philadelphia, the family was known for their role in supporting independence and their house at Clermont was burned to the ground by the British in 1777. We surmise that most of the books must have been removed to another site as the British troops approached. The Chancellor’s mother, Margaret Beekman Livingston, oversaw the rebuilding of the estate and it remained in the family’s hands until the last Livingston to live at Clermont deeded the land to New York State in 1962. It was designated a United States Historic Landmark in 1973 and it is now open to the public for tours and special events. OCLC has over 70 listings for books from the publisher, Chez Andre Cailleau, from this period, but none for this title (although one can be found in a current online listing). He was also engaged in various fields of applied mathematics and became a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1735. Still a well preserved copy of this scarce book. ** "Louis le Comte (1655?1728), also known as Louis-Daniel Lecomte, was a French Jesuit who participated in the 1687 French Jesuit mission to China under Jean de Fontaney. He arrived in China on 7 February 1688. He returned to France in 1691 as Procurator of the Jesuits. His Nouveau mémoire sur l'état présent de la Chine, which was published in Paris in 1696, caused great debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. Le Compte traveled to China in the late 17th century as one of the ?Mathematicians to the King,? a group of French Jesuit astronomers sent to China by Louis XIV to assist the on-going mission in the Far East. Though they won few converts, ?the knowledge they gathered of the East was a superb bequest to Europe? (Severin 94). Le Compte?s work, first published in French in 1696, was considered ?the best account of China previous to Duhalde?s work, though in many particulars extremely partial to the Chinese? (Allibone, 1330). " - See Wikipedia . William Henry Toms (c. 1700?1765) was an English engraver. Referenced by: ESTC T72767 . Full title reads: "A compleat history of the empire of China : being the observations of above ten years travels through that country ; containing memoirs and remarks, geographical, historical, topographical, physical, natural, astronomical, mechanical, military, mercantile, political, and ecclesiastical, particularly upon their pottery and varnishing silk and other manufactures, pearl-fishing, the history of plants and animals, with a description of their cities and publick works, number of people, manners, language, and customs, coin and commerce, their habits, oeconomy, and government, the philosophy of the famous Confucius / written by the learned Lewis Le Comte, Jesuit, confessor to the Dutchess of Burgundy, and one of the French King's Mathematicians, who was a missioner in China near twenty years ; new translation from the best Paris edition, and adorn'd with copper-plates." . .

2 vols.

4 Bl., 235 + 264 pp. (8 pages are blank misprints). With 5 copper plates. Size: 17 x 11 cm. New marbled card boards in contemporary style. *Sabin 36868. Extremly rare original edition, I found world wide only 2 known copies: one in British library and one in the University of Michigan (gift of L.L. Hubbard), which is digital edited by google. - Complete in 2 volumes (a projected third volume was never published). - This novel is an imaginary voyage to America with advantures and adventurous events with american pirats. - In our copy are misprints in the first volume on the pages 146/147, 150/151, 154/155 and 158/159, which are blank. (I have added this 8 pages as xeros copies on old paper of 18th century). - A few pages slowly browned, else in good condition.

Apr. 1739. (Stuttgart, 1739). 36 S. - 2. Receß zwischen des Regierenden Herrn Herzogens zu Württemberg ... und den Landschafftlichen Engeren Ausschuß d.d. 1753. 8 Seiten. - 3. Würtembergische Religions-Urkunden in Historischem Zusammenhang.
