Histoire de L'Expédition de Trois Vaisseaux. Envoyés par la Compagnie des Indes Occidentales des Provinces-Unies, aux Terres Australes en MDCCXXI...

The Hague: Aux depens de la Compagnie, 1739. Two volumes, small octavo; in contemporary mottled calf. Rare account of the Roggeveen voyage, one of the most important of the Dutch voyages, ranking with those of Le Maire, Schouten and Tasman. It set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed, but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries, with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time. There were altogether three contemporary narrative versions of the voyage, in Dutch, French and German: all are rare. This first French - and generally preferred - edition of Behrens's account was based on the 1737 German version, and very likely translated by Behrens himself, who travelled under Roggeveen as commander of marines, though some authorities have attributed the translation to De Brosses.Roggeveen crossed the Pacific from the east at the head of a three-vessel expedition with largely commercial objects. He specifically sought the fabled continent of Terra Australis, which the English privateer Captain Edward Davis claimed to have sighted in 1680. It did not materialise, but on April 5th 1722 Roggeveen landed at the previously uncharted island which he christened l'isle de Paques (Easter Island). They were the first recorded European visitors to the island and the detailed description of the inhabitants, their extraordinary idols and their way of life is of great value. The expedition later went on to discover some of the outer islands of the Samoan group.Although Roggeveen's voyage failed in its primary objective it provided strong motivation for the authorities who sent Captain Cook out on his first voyage forty-six years later. "Sunday 13th (March 1774). In stretching in for the land we discovered people and those Monuments or Idols mentioned by the Authors of Roggeveen Voyage which left us no room to doubt but it was Easter Island" (Cook's Journal of the Resolution & Adventure, Beaglehole II p.338).This attractive copy originally belonged to John Montagu, Duke of Montagu (c.1688-1749), Governor of St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Each volume of this set has Montagu's library shelf-ticket to the front endpaper, with his crest gilt stamped upon petite crimson morocco spine labels. On his death his residence, Montagu House, was acquired by the Government to house the newly-established British Museum. Joints a bit worn but still quite firm, overall a fine set.

Histoire de l'expedition de trois vaisseaux... aux Terres Australes

The Hague: la Compagnie, 1739. Two volumes bound in one, small octavo, both titles in red and black, bound with both half-titles; contemporary blind-embossed vellum, manuscript label on spine. A handsome copy of Roggeveen's voyage into the Pacific. Behrens' scarce narrative tells the story of one of the most significant of the Dutch voyages, ranking with those of Le Maire, Schouten and Tasman. Roggeveen set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed, but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries, with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time.Roggeveen crossed the Pacific from the east at the head of a three-vessel expedition with largely commercial objectives. They were the first recorded European visitors to the island and the detailed description of the inhabitants, their extraordinary idols and their way of life is of great value. The expedition later went on to discover some of the outer islands of the Samoan group. Because he had sailed for the Dutch West India Company Roggeveen was temporarily imprisoned by the powerful Dutch East India Company in Batavia, but later released to complete 'one of the last of the great Dutch circumnavigations' (Howgego).Apart from a conspicuously rare pamphlet published in 1727, and the equally rare Dutch Tweejaarige reyze rondom de wereld of 1728, this was the first major notice of this important voyage, not only a substantial Pacific voyage in its own right, but one which provided a direct stimulus for the search for the Southern Continent. Behrens' account of the Roggeveen voyage was originally published in German in 1737, but this first French edition is generally preferred. It was likely translated and amended by Behrens himself, who travelled under Roggeveen as commander of marines, though some authorities have attributed the translation to De Brosses.Although Roggeveen's voyage failed in its primary objective, it represented an important achievement in terms of its own discoveries. The Behrens account had some effect on subsequent voyages, including providing strong motivation for the authorities who sent Captain Cook out on his first voyage forty-six years later. 'Sunday 13th (March 1774). In stretching in for the land we discovered people and those Moniments or Idols mentioned by the Authors of Roggeweins Voyage which left us no room to doubt but it was Easter Island... ' (Beaglehole, Journals of Captain James Cook, II, p. 338). In fine condition.

      - Kuijlen & Wijnands 66 & exhib. 2; Veendorp & Becking, p. 45 & bibliog. item 6. First catalogue of the plants botanical garden at the École Centrale in Ghent, which later became the city and university botanical garden, arranged according to the Linnaean classification. The main text covers 687 numbered plant genera, often listing several species, with brief descriptions. The supplement lists 123 numbered species without descriptions, but also under the Linnaean class headings. The compiler Courdet de Villeneuve (1739-1806) was not a professional botanist but had been an overseer of printing in Revolutionary France and moved in 1800 to Ghent, where he taught grammar at the new École Centrale. When Napoleon conquered the southern Low Countries (territories of the Austrian Habsburgs) in 1794 Ghent became the capital of one of the new departements, which each had a central school with a library, botanical garden and other facilities for study. With an owner's inscription. In very good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed and the head of the backstrip chipped and repaired, but still in good condition. An interesting record of botanical scholarship in Napoleonic Ghent.

      G. Smith, In Stanhope-street near Clare-market, et al, 1739. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Seven of the ten volumes of this set, published in 1739 and 1740 (these volumes). Volume 1 contains the alegorical frontispiece indicating that no branch of natural philosophy is foreign to the society. In addition, each volume has thirteen numbered engraved plates, mostly folding, of which plate 5 in volume 4 and plate 9 in volume 5 are missing, apparently never having been bound in. Contemporary full calf with simple gilt panelling on the covers and rules across the spine, simple blind-embossed borders within the panels, raised bands and volume numbers in gilt arabic numerals on spine, "BADDAM'S MEMOIRS" on red Morocco labels gilt bordered. All page edges red-sprinkled. The condition of the bindings is worn, with some splitting of joints and parting of paper at hinges, but still strong, with no incipient detaching of boards. Occasional loose free endpaper. Text pages and plates with little if any foxing. Pagination: (vi),516,(8); 516,(4); 1-512,489( mis-numbered page 513),(7);506,(6);514,(5+blank); 515,blank +(4); 516,(4).Usual double free endpapers of this period. The provenance, going back through time is indicated by the bookplates of a recent FRS, of John Hallifax, displaying his arms as granted in 1788 and finally the pioneer inventor and mill-owner Jedediah Strutt who partnered Richard Arkwright in the world's first water-powered cotton mill in Cromford,Derbyshire, which still largely survives as a shell, and later set up giant mills of his own in Belper and Milford, sadly almost completely lost in the carpet demolition of the 60's. His small ornate-lettered "Jedh. Strutt" bookplate is attached to the top corner of each front pastedown.

Neapolis den 14. Jul. [=Headline.] Report, in Leipziger Zeitungen III. stück, XXXII Woche, 5 Aug. 1739, of the recent findings in the excavations near Portici.

      - (Leipzig, 1739). 4to. Pp. 493-496. Disbound. The report is on page 493, in double columns. This very early report mentions the excavation of the amphiteatre, and some finds in metal made earlier; the equestran statue of Titus, a quadriga and a giant. This is probably one of the earliest reports of the finds in Herculaneum (the name is still not known). The theatre was identified between December 1738 and January 1739, and the bronze fragments and a wheel from a quadriga was found in May 1739 (Parslow, Rediscovering Antiquity p. 32). The giant is more obscure.

Blind-stamped vellum ca. 1739, leather spine labels, vellum on spines cracked and peeling with some loss in Vol. 2, light soiling. Occasional faint foxing but very good. Bookplate of the Ramsgate Monastery in each volume. $ First Edition of the first continent-wide union catalogue of manuscripts, compiled by Bernard de Montfaucon, a scholar and Benedictine monk best known for founding the discipline of paleography with his Palaeographia Graeca (1708; see Printing and the Mind of Man 175). The 1669-page Bibliotheca bibliothecarum catalogued all the manuscript libraries in France and Italy with which Montfaucon was familiar, as well as a few in Germany, the Netherlands and England. Its emphasis was on medieval and Renaissance texts. Montfaucon began with a list of all the libraries, institutional and private, for which he published holdings. These included the well-known collections and those of medieval monasteries such as Bobbio, Corbie and Fulda, as well as lesser-known monastic libraries. This was followed by a 250-page index of authors and codices, and then with a list of the manuscript contents of libraries by country beginning with Italy and the Vatican Library. The work ended with another 160-page index of authors and “rerum” (things). The comprehensive indices make it possible to locate manuscript texts by author and subject. As such it remains the most useful tool for checking the distribution of manuscript texts in European libraries, and their survival in institutions up to the first third of the eighteenth century. $3750

Plan de Paris, Commencé l'Année 1734. Dessiné et Gravé, sous les ordres de Messire Michel Etienne Turgot ... Achevé de Graver en 1739 ..

Paris, 1739. Folio. (21 3/4 x 17 inches). Folding index map hand-coloured in outline and very large perspective plan on 20 sheets by Claude Lucas after Louis Bretez, sheets 18 and 19 joined as issued, decorative engraved border with fleur-de-lys cornerpieces, title in elaborate figural cartouche. Contemporary red morocco, covers with arms of the city of Paris in gilt, spine gilt in compartments with Fleurs-de-lys, olive morocco lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, gilt edgesProvenance: Mr. de Barraly (armorial bookplate)First edition of the monumental Turgot plan of Paris: a cartographical tour-de-force.The 20 sheets of this impressive atlas form a single enormous plan, which when joined would be approximately 8.25 x 10.5 feet. The map covers an area approximately corresponding to the first eleven of the modern-day arrondissements and is the best 18th century plan of Paris. In 1734, Michel-Étienne Turgot, chief of the municipality of Paris, in order to promote the reputation of Paris commissioned a new map of the city. He asked Louis Bretez, member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and professor of perspective, to draw up the plan of Paris and its suburbs. As Turgot requested a very faithful map with great accuracy, for two years Bretez was allowed to enter into the mansions, houses and gardens of the city in order to take precise measurements. In the eighteenth century, the trend was to abandon the Rennaissance-style portraits of cities for geometric plans, as technically and mathematically superior. The Turgot plan, however, on an isometric projection oriented toward the southeast, uses a system of perspective cavaliere: two buildings of the same size are represented by two drawings of the same size, whether the buildings are close or distant. The effect is a mesmerizing bird's eye view which shows the city in all its magnificence.Claude Lucas, engraver of the Royal Academy of Sciences, masterfully engraved the plan, which was published between 1739 and 1740. The map was bound in elegant volumes and offered to the King, the members of the Academy, the Municipality, and important visiting dignitaries. The best 18th century plan of Paris, and among the most impressive of all city plans.Brunet I:1224; Cohen de Ricci 807; Boutier 219.

Covens & Mortier, Amsterdam 1739 - This striking 1739 map depicts ancient Greece and the several islands in the Aegean Sea. Covers from Dalmatia east to the Sea of Marmara and south to Cythera or Kithira, Incredibly detailed, the map notes several important cities and towns, lakes, rivers, and beautifully rendered topography. The map identifies several ancient locales throughout. In good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold. Some offsetting and minor foxing. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.Based on the earlier plates by Nicolas Sanson (1600 - 1667), who is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. Hard to find. Map. Uncolored engraving. Indietro con i nervi decorati. parte del titolo in marocchino rosso.
