An attempt to explain the oeconomy of the human frame, upon the principles of the new philosophy. (bound with) The use of reason recovered by the data in Christianity. Part II

James Brettenham; George Straham, London 1739 - Separate title pages for each book. Contemporary calf, double gilt fillet covers, spine in gilt with morocco label, shelf mark stamped in gilt at head of spine. Covers lightly rubbed, interior with sprinkled margins, an excellent copy from the library of The Earl of Portsmouth with his armorial bookplate on front paste-down. First edition of an anonymously published work by Hutchinson, exceedingly rare with only 4 known copies (3 in the UK and the Yale copy in America). Hutchinson was not a physician, but interested in the activities of medical men, including the so called quack practitioners. He cites physicians that do not look to the patients symptoms and only guess what diseases they might carry. He here writes on the human frame (skeleton), describing his positions about numerous subjects, such as the motion of bodies in fluid, the quality of matter placed in the stomach and of the juices secreted into it out of the blood, the circulation of blood in animals, a description of the ducts for secreting, and the glands for collecting juices out of the blood, the state of the operations in a healthy person, the effects of too much heat and too much cold, the use of purges, diuretics, cupping and scarifying, blistering, smoking, or chewing tobacco and snuff, and his observations and comparisons between the effects of eating fresh fruits, greens, etc.Hutchinson (1674-1737) was born at Spennithorne, near Middleham, Yorkshire. He was privately educated to be a land steward when in 1700 he met John Woodward, the Duke of Somerset's physician and became interested through him in natural philosophy. He collected fossils and made observations for Woodward, who apparently was to have written an account of the creation and demonstrate the error of Newtonian concepts. Woodward used his fossils but never wrote his treatise. Therefore, Hutchinson produced his own alternative account that rejected Newtonianism because it conflicted with revelation, especially on vacuum and gravitation. What was surprising was that his alternative natural philosophy drew attention and persisted throughout the eighteenth and into the nineteenth century, winning him many disciples. He continued with a major interest in the geological theories by Thomas Burnet and Woodward, stoking the flames of a controversy as to the relations between geology and the book of Genesis.

The Trial of the Notorious Highwayman Richard Turpin, at York assizes, on the 22d day of March, 1739, before the Hon. Sir William Chapple, Knt. Judge of Assize, and one of His Majesty's Justices of the Court of King's Bench. Taken down in court by Mr. Thomas Kyll, Professor of Short-Hand. To which is prefix'd, an exact account of the said Turpin, from his first coming into Yorkshire, to the time of his being committed prisoner to York Castle; communicated by Mr. Appleton of Beverly, Clerk of the Peace for the East-Riding of the said County. With a copy of a letter which Turpin received from his father, while under sentence of death. To which is added, his behaviour at the place of execution, on Saturday the 7th of April, 1739. Together with the whole confession he made to the hangman at the gallows; wherein he acknowledg'd himself guilty of the facts for which he suffer'd, own'd the murder of Mr. Thompson's servant on Epping-Forest, and gave a particular account of several robberies which he had committed.

York: printed by Ward and Chandler. 1739 vii, [2], 4-25, [1]p. 8vo. A little light browning, original stab holes visible. Bound in early 20th century half calf, marbled boards. Armorial bookplate of Moncure Biddle.ESTC T112935, BL, St Andrews, York Minster, Edinburgh, Kesteven County Library; Folger, UCLA, Texas. The FIRST EDITION of the celebrated trial of the most famous highwayman in English history. Ward and Chandler published five editions in York in 1739. All are rare and library records (ESTC, COPAC and OCLC) only locate 23 copies in total. They were provincially produced to satisfy the demands by the public following the trial and execution and were probably literally read to pieces. The records of William Bowyer show two impressions of '1/2 sheet C' of 'Turpin's Tryal' printed for Ward & Chandler, entered at 19 April 1739, one of 1000 copies, the other of 500 copies; one of these impressions may be part of this edition.

        An Impartial Account

London - Printed and Sold by the Booksellers in Town and Country, 1739 Book. Good. Hardcover. A fascinating and unusual work on the Inquisition. This work deals in particular with the Inquisitions of Spain Portugal and Italy. There are details of specific cases of the Inquisition, including the 'trial and sufferings of Mr Isaac Martin who was put into the inquisition in Spain with an account of his deliverance', 'Description of the Inquisition of Granada', 'The Prosecution of the famous Molinos, his condemnation, imprisonment and death', 'an abstract of the travels and sufferings of Mr William Lithgow, a Scotsman' and accounts of other cruelties used in the inquisition'. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphres Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. With a frontispiece and three plates. A very scarce work, with only two referenced by the ESTC, one held at Canterbury Cathedral Archives and the other at University of Pennsylvania Van Pelt-Dietrich. This work was collated using the 1738 edition, which is the only fully available copy. The 1738 edition has the same pagination and head and tail pieces as this 1739 edition. Appears to be lacking plate titled 'A Heretick Convict before Judgement habit-ed in the San benito, which is to face page 240 to the 1738 edition. Lacking final leaf of text to the 'supplement to the foregoing discourse' as well as the binder's instructions. It would appear these pages have beenlost from the textblock. The Inquisition was a group of institutions within the governing system of the Catholic Church first formed during the 12th century. The aim of the Inquisition was to combat heresy. During the Renaissance the Inquisition significantly expanded in response to the Protestant Reformation. Condition: In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the boards and spine. Externally, worn, particularly to the spine. Loss to the joint sand to the head and tail of spine. Heavy rubbing to boards and extremities. Hinges are tender with the cords showing. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Christopher Rowe. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are age toned, particularly to edges. Marks to pages and light spotting throughout. Some minor chipping to page edges. Closed tear to title page and some loss at gutter. Overall: GOOD..

Histoire de L'Expédition de Trois Vaisseaux. Envoyés par la Compagnie des Indes Occidentales des Provinces-Unies, aux Terres Australes en MDCCXXI...

The Hague: Aux depens de la Compagnie, 1739. Two volumes, small octavo; in contemporary mottled calf. Rare account of the Roggeveen voyage, one of the most important of the Dutch voyages, ranking with those of Le Maire, Schouten and Tasman. It set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed, but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries, with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time. There were altogether three contemporary narrative versions of the voyage, in Dutch, French and German: all are rare. This first French - and generally preferred - edition of Behrens's account was based on the 1737 German version, and very likely translated by Behrens himself, who travelled under Roggeveen as commander of marines, though some authorities have attributed the translation to De Brosses.Roggeveen crossed the Pacific from the east at the head of a three-vessel expedition with largely commercial objects. He specifically sought the fabled continent of Terra Australis, which the English privateer Captain Edward Davis claimed to have sighted in 1680. It did not materialise, but on April 5th 1722 Roggeveen landed at the previously uncharted island which he christened l'isle de Paques (Easter Island). They were the first recorded European visitors to the island and the detailed description of the inhabitants, their extraordinary idols and their way of life is of great value. The expedition later went on to discover some of the outer islands of the Samoan group.Although Roggeveen's voyage failed in its primary objective it provided strong motivation for the authorities who sent Captain Cook out on his first voyage forty-six years later. "Sunday 13th (March 1774). In stretching in for the land we discovered people and those Monuments or Idols mentioned by the Authors of Roggeveen Voyage which left us no room to doubt but it was Easter Island" (Cook's Journal of the Resolution & Adventure, Beaglehole II p.338).This attractive copy originally belonged to John Montagu, Duke of Montagu (c.1688-1749), Governor of St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Each volume of this set has Montagu's library shelf-ticket to the front endpaper, with his crest gilt stamped upon petite crimson morocco spine labels. On his death his residence, Montagu House, was acquired by the Government to house the newly-established British Museum. Joints a bit worn but still quite firm, overall a fine set.

Histoire de l'expedition de trois vaisseaux... aux Terres Australes

The Hague: la Compagnie, 1739. Two volumes bound in one, small octavo, both titles in red and black, bound with both half-titles; contemporary blind-embossed vellum, manuscript label on spine. A handsome copy of Roggeveen's voyage into the Pacific. Behrens' scarce narrative tells the story of one of the most significant of the Dutch voyages, ranking with those of Le Maire, Schouten and Tasman. Roggeveen set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed, but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries, with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time.Roggeveen crossed the Pacific from the east at the head of a three-vessel expedition with largely commercial objectives. They were the first recorded European visitors to the island and the detailed description of the inhabitants, their extraordinary idols and their way of life is of great value. The expedition later went on to discover some of the outer islands of the Samoan group. Because he had sailed for the Dutch West India Company Roggeveen was temporarily imprisoned by the powerful Dutch East India Company in Batavia, but later released to complete 'one of the last of the great Dutch circumnavigations' (Howgego).Apart from a conspicuously rare pamphlet published in 1727, and the equally rare Dutch Tweejaarige reyze rondom de wereld of 1728, this was the first major notice of this important voyage, not only a substantial Pacific voyage in its own right, but one which provided a direct stimulus for the search for the Southern Continent. Behrens' account of the Roggeveen voyage was originally published in German in 1737, but this first French edition is generally preferred. It was likely translated and amended by Behrens himself, who travelled under Roggeveen as commander of marines, though some authorities have attributed the translation to De Brosses.Although Roggeveen's voyage failed in its primary objective, it represented an important achievement in terms of its own discoveries. The Behrens account had some effect on subsequent voyages, including providing strong motivation for the authorities who sent Captain Cook out on his first voyage forty-six years later. 'Sunday 13th (March 1774). In stretching in for the land we discovered people and those Moniments or Idols mentioned by the Authors of Roggeweins Voyage which left us no room to doubt but it was Easter Island... ' (Beaglehole, Journals of Captain James Cook, II, p. 338). In fine condition.

      - Kuijlen & Wijnands 66 & exhib. 2; Veendorp & Becking, p. 45 & bibliog. item 6. First catalogue of the plants botanical garden at the École Centrale in Ghent, which later became the city and university botanical garden, arranged according to the Linnaean classification. The main text covers 687 numbered plant genera, often listing several species, with brief descriptions. The supplement lists 123 numbered species without descriptions, but also under the Linnaean class headings. The compiler Courdet de Villeneuve (1739-1806) was not a professional botanist but had been an overseer of printing in Revolutionary France and moved in 1800 to Ghent, where he taught grammar at the new École Centrale. When Napoleon conquered the southern Low Countries (territories of the Austrian Habsburgs) in 1794 Ghent became the capital of one of the new departements, which each had a central school with a library, botanical garden and other facilities for study. With an owner's inscription. In very good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed and the head of the backstrip chipped and repaired, but still in good condition. An interesting record of botanical scholarship in Napoleonic Ghent.
