Behrens, C. F.:
[Click Below for Full Description]

BRUYN Cornelius Le
1737. First edition in English. 2 vols. With an engraved allegorical frontispiece, the title-page, a portrait of the author, 3 double-page maps, 117 engraved plates (including 4 which are unnumbered, the remainder numbered 1-262, and many of which are folding or double-page), and 46 text illustrations. Folio. Contemporary full calf, rebacked, the spines with raised bands and elaborately gilt, contrasting lettering pieces, a fresh, crisp copy. [4], 246; 223, [xi] [index] pp. London: Pr. for A. Bettesworth and C. Hitch, First published in Amsterdam in 1711, this is the first appearance of Cornelis de Bruyn?s second travel account in English. Richly illustrated, it contains a number of engravings after the author?s first-hand drawings of Persepolis. The Dutch traveller and painter spent some years between 1678 and 1685 in Egypt, Anatolia and the Levant, eventually returning to the Netherlands in 1693, where he settled to write up his travels. They were published to some success, enough, at least, to encourage Nicolaas Witsen (who funded de Bruyn?s first endeavour) to finance a second trip, this time to Russia and Persia. De Bruyn entered Persia in early July 1703, and ?generally followed the standard route of European travellers: Samaki, Ardabil, Qom, Kasan, Isfahan, Shiraz, Bandar Abbas.? (Encyclopaedia Iranica). He stayed at Isfahan for nearly a year and provides a thorough account of the city. Connections in the Dutch East Indies Company gave him access to the Persian court, a privilege he took full advantage of, making an engaging portrait of Shah Soltan Hosayn (the last S … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Brickell
Printed by James Carson for the author, Dublin, 1737. FIRST EDITION. viii; 408 pp. Folding map, four engraved copper plates printed on two folding sheets. Mild browning to the text, map, and prints but still very good in a worn, full nineteenth century calf rebacked at an early date with a new spine and black morocco spine label. All four corners are worn and two areas of the rear board are worn down to the binding board. There is one short tape mend at page 211. Also, this copy is apparently lacking several pages of the list of subscribers in that the last name on the list here is that of Mr. Thomas Coote. Brickell accompanied Provincial Governor George Burrington to North Carolina in 1724, remaining in the region for six years and becoming one of the first medical doctors in North Carolina. Part of this book, principally the material on the flora and fauna of North Carolina, is taken from the work of John Lawson, but there is also much of his own material, especially in the areas of social and economic history and on the medical practices of the native tribes. The work includes a short comparative vocabulary of the Woccon, Pamticoe, and Tuskeruro Indians. The map is based primarily on that of Lawson (1709), with the largely unexplored interior labeled "Cherokee Mountains." "The book is well organized and written in a pleasing style. It is probably the best account in print relating to diseases and medical practice in colonial North Carolina. An account of a visit to 'Cherokee Mountains' in 1730 is one of the most interesting features of this volume" - Clark. The plates in … [Click Below for Full Description]

(AUCTION CATALOGUE: VERRUE, Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes, comtesse de)
1737. 20 pp. 8vo, 19th-century brown half-cloth & marbled boards (spine a trifle rubbed), title on spine, spine gilt. [S.l.: 1737].One of the very rare contemporary manuscript sale catalogues of the painting collection of the comtesse de Verrue (1670-1736), one of history's greatest collectors of art as well as books. It is annotated with nearly all prices and a few buyers' names. According to Lugt, there are no known printed catalogues of this sale of paintings - most likely never printed - and the Getty Provenance Index records 14 extant manuscript copies, all in institutional libraries, except this example."Verrue, may be best known today as Alexandre Dumas's fictive dame volupté, a sobriquet she reputedly created and one that has too easily obscured her crucial role in the art world of early eighteenth-century Paris. She had the social confidence to renounce the traditional pattern of collecting that Crozat had eagerly embraced and turned from 'serious' Italian paintings to 'petits sujets,' bucolic landscapes, and amorous mythologies, primarily by painters of the Northern and French schools. Like Crozat, she shaped a remarkable and widely admired dwelling that was central to her identity and famous during her lifetime. The importance of each house was enhanced by the way it functioned. [Click Below for Full Description]

James Harrington; John Toland
London: A Millar. Being mostly Harrington's magnum opus, 'The Commonwealth of Oceana'. Harrington's work was originally suppressed by Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell and after it was finally published there was a dedication to Cromwell. The work describes an ideal constitution which allows for the existence of a Utopian republic. Contemporaneously, many viewed the work as a metaphor for interregnum England. Toland was Harrington's first editor. The Toland edition of Harrington's works was first published in 1700. This 1737 edition is the second edition. Toland had republican sympathies, which was evident in his editing of the writings of some of the great radicals of the 1650s. ESTC No. T146276 Repairs to the edges of the title page. Engraved frontispiece, and an engraved plate of the author by Vander Gucht, and one full page plate illustrating the Venetian 'Ballot'. Three plates total. Collated, complete. CONDITION Rebound in a quarter morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. A few light chips to the frontispiece, title page and final few leaves at the edges. Just the odd spots to pages. Repairs to the edge of title pages. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.
