CLARE, Martin.
London: Edward Symon, 1737. London:: Edward Symon, 1737., 1737. 8vo. xvi, 369, [23] pp. 9 engraved plates, index, errata. Contemporary crimson gilt-tooled calf, later gilt-stamped leather spine label, raised bands, all edges gilt. Ownership inscription of D. Laing. SPECIALLY BOUND DEDICATEE'S PERSONAL COPY. Very good. Second edition, corrected and improved. The contents are made up on 67 chapters relating to statics, hydrostatics, syphons, pumps of various types, "fire-engines" [steam engines], motion of water in canals & pipes, specific gravity, hydrometer, pneumatics, barometer, air-pump, effects of air pressure on animal bodies, muscular motion, heart pressure, circulation of the blood, animal respiration & suction, elasticity of the air, cupping (bleeding), rise of sap in plants, thermometer, hygrometer, atmospheric phenomena, of winds, smokey chambers, causes of thunder & meteors, precipitation, and the origin of springs, sound (the trumpet instrument), and tides. - Roberts & Trent. / Indeed, the chapter on "The Art of Diving" makes clear the effect of increasing pressure as it affects the volume of a given amount of gas (Boyle's Law). Indeed, the relative volumes of air at 33, 66 and 99 feel (1, 2, and 3 atmospheres) are explicitly defined. This chapter, however, discusses the malady that we now know as Caisson's Disease or the Bends, but fails to explain the reason behind the resulting debility. The plates mostly deal with hydraulics, including siphons, water wells and decorative fountains. The author was apparently quite well known in his time as Benjamin Franklin … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Brickell
Printed by James Carson for the author, Dublin, 1737. FIRST EDITION. viii; 408 pp. Folding map, four engraved copper plates printed on two folding sheets. Mild browning to the text, map, and prints but still very good in a worn, full nineteenth century calf rebacked at an early date with a new spine and black morocco spine label. All four corners are worn and two areas of the rear board are worn down to the binding board. There is one short tape mend at page 211. Also, this copy is apparently lacking several pages of the list of subscribers in that the last name on the list here is that of Mr. Thomas Coote. Brickell accompanied Provincial Governor George Burrington to North Carolina in 1724, remaining in the region for six years and becoming one of the first medical doctors in North Carolina. Part of this book, principally the material on the flora and fauna of North Carolina, is taken from the work of John Lawson, but there is also much of his own material, especially in the areas of social and economic history and on the medical practices of the native tribes. The work includes a short comparative vocabulary of the Woccon, Pamticoe, and Tuskeruro Indians. The map is based primarily on that of Lawson (1709), with the largely unexplored interior labeled "Cherokee Mountains." "The book is well organized and written in a pleasing style. It is probably the best account in print relating to diseases and medical practice in colonial North Carolina. An account of a visit to 'Cherokee Mountains' in 1730 is one of the most interesting features of this volume" - Clark. The plates in … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALLARESSO, Zaccaria.
Venezia, Giuseppe Bettinelli, 1737, CARTA AZZURRA tavole ARANCIONE + ALTRO B/N. in-8, pp. CXXXV, legatura coeva in pergamena. [Click Below for Full Description]

1737. Very Good. Single leaf. 19 x 31 cm. Written in a reasonably clear hand -- there were only a few words that we couldn't decipher. Remnants of old red seal on bottom right above and to the right of the attestation before the Justice of the Peace. Later folds. Three small holes at corners of folds with loss of a few letters. Ink darkened in a few places. Overall a sound and readable Colonial Deed. The four corners of the piece of land conveyed were described as rock-encircled trees (two chestnuts, one walnut and one red oak) -- presumably all long gone. Recording data on the other side. Framed under two-sided glass (20th century). The Platts (mostly written in this document as Plats) were one of the original white families who settled in Killingworth.

Ulfeldt. (PAULLI, Jacob Henrik.)
(Köpenhamn, 1737.) 8:o. (24) s. Titelbladet i prydlig äldre handskrift. Insatt i senare marmorerat omslag, detta sedan insatt i gammal och ganska nött halvfransk pärm. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Bibl. danica III, sp. 1537. Ingen upplaga verkar dock ha tryckts under hans livstid.
