HARVEY, William.
Editio novissima indici bus ornata. Lugduni Batavorum (Leida) apud Johannem van Kerckhem 1737. 2 opere in 1 vol. in-4, ff. (8), pp. 170 e 2 tavole f.t.; ff. (12), pp. 404, ff. «English experimental scientists regarded the discovery as of equal importance with Copernican astronomy or Galilean physics» (PMM 127). Il "de Generatione Animalium", apparso per la prima volta nel 1651 a Londra, rivoluzionò la teoria galenico-aristotelica dello sviluppo dell' embrione. "The chapter on labour ("De partu") in this book represents the first original work on obstetrics to be published by an English author". (Garrison-Morton 6146). Ottimo esemplare di raccolta rara e ricercata. Wellcome III, 220. Keynes 46. Waller 4127. [Attributes: First E … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOLFF (Christian)
Frankfurt & Leipzig, Renger, 1737. Second Edition, 4to, title in red and black, folding engraved plate, contemporary signature "Andreas Gerstrom", errata leaf at end, [16], 448, [8], [2] pp., woodcut ornaments to title and head- and initials, errata leaf at end, lightly browned, contemporary half vellum, rubbed. "Wolff was essentially a popularizer and (to some extent inspired by Leibniz) sought to effect a formal synthesis between Scholasticism, the new mathematical methods, and more recent scientific conceptions ...... Wolff's deterministic formulations of his cosmological principles, which emphasize the rational connections between things, given as sequences or coexistences; these formal themes were later directly echoed in Kant's writings. The visible world is a machine, operating in accordance with the laws of motion: almost one-third of the Cosmologia generalis treats these laws." - DSB, XlV. pp.482-484. "It was due to the influence of Wolff that theology was supplanted by philosophy as the leading discipline at German universities and the Wolffian system dominated German intellectual life until the time of Kant." - Pinson, Encyclopedia of Social Sciences. BERNOULLI, Jean.
Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1737 - Quarto (246 × 190 mm). Contemporary spotted calf, neatly rebacked to style, red morocco label, floral tools gilt to the compartments, French fillet panel gilt to the boards, double fillet edge-roll, marbled edges and endpapers. A little rubbed, light browning, but a very good copy. 24 folding engraved plates. First edition. Extremely uncommon, OCLC locates just two copies: Swiss National Library and the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon. Bernoulli's paper was the winner of a competition set by the Académie Royale des Sciences to answer the question of what was the best possible shape for anchors. The volume also contains the second prize-winner, Tresaguet's "Memoire sur la Fabrique des Ancres", and the joint third place essays, Bernoulli's son Daniel's "Réfléxions sur la Meillure Figure a donner aux Ancres ", and le Marquis Poleni's "Dissertations Latines sur les Ancres " Interesting and well-illustrated collection of papers exemplifying the French state's efforts to rationalize ship design and production during the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The feuding Swiss Bernoulli scientific dynasty were important contributors to a number of key areas of research, Johann or Jean made significant advances towards the development of calculus, while his son Daniel is particularly remembered for his applications of mathematics to mechanics, especially fluid mechanics, and for his pioneering work in probability and statistics. ANVILLE, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' (1697-1782).
The Hague: Henri Scheurleer, 1737. Folio (21 4/8 x 17 inches). Title-page printed in red and black (margins of text leaves expertly repaired with some renewal). 42 maps, including 3 fine double-page and folding engraved general maps of China, Tartarie and Tibet, China and Tartary, all with original hand-colour in outline (some expert repairs to folds on versos), 9 uncoloured double-page and 30 full-page regional maps (some expert and discreet marginal repairs). Modern half tan calf, brown paper boards, red morocco lettering-piece in one. D'Anville's spectacular comprehensive atlas of China, Tartary and Tibet is the second western atlas of China, following that of Martinus Martini published by Blaeu in 1655. It is absolutely the first scientific cartographical survey of China. Executed by French Jesuits, at the behest of the Emperor Kang Hsi, it forms the most important cartographic record of China from the eighteenth century. The maps were first published in Du Halde's "DescriptionÂ… de l'Empire de la China", 1735. The maps provide not only the first accurate depiction of the Pacific coastline and the first maps of the more remote areas of China, Tibet and Mongolia, but also the first separate map of Korea by a European cartographer and the first printed map to illustrate Bering's first voyage. Following the death of Guillaume Delisle, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville continued the line of progressive French cartographers which had begun with Nicolas Sanson in the previous century. He was a scrupulous editor of maps and his work spanned most of the eighteenth century … [Click Below for Full Description]
