        pl. 61 Hyacinth or Hare Bells

      An wonderfully detailed hand colored botanical engraving by Elizabeth Blackwell from her book"A Curious Herbal Containing Five Hundred Cuts of the Most Useful Plants Which are Now Used in the Practice of Physick", which was published in London in 1737-39. Overall this print measures 11.25"x18". In 1737, Elizabeth produced a delightful volume, A Curious Herbal, containing many decorative plates of various plants. Such herbals, illustrating and describing plants for their alleged medicinal powers, were the medical books of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The story of Blackwell?s book is particularly interesting.Talented and fiercely independent women seem to have flourished in the field of botanical illustration. Mrs. Blackwell - apparently neither an artist nor a botanist - was suddenly faced with the problem of obtaining her doctor husband?s release from a debtor?s prison, where he was languishing after an abortive foray into the printing business. On the advice of Sir Hans Sloane, the famous London Physician and patron of naturalists, who had told her that a herbal of medicinal plants was needed, the resourceful lady set herself up in lodgings near the Chelsea Physic Garden , founded by the Society of Apothecaries on a piece of land donated by Sloane, and proceeded to make drawings of the appropriate plants. The result of her initiative and labors was A Curious Herbal, with 500 hand-colored copperplate engravings. The indirect result was Dr. Alexander Blackwell?s release from prison. Her efforts on his behalf certainly seem worthwhile today to anyone looking at A Curious Herbal. Blackwell herself did not fair so well in the long run. Upon his release from prison, Dr. Alexander Blackwell worked for the Duke of Chandos and later for the King of Sweden. Unfortunately, after a few years in the King?s service, he became involved in a sordid political intrigue and was beheaded for treason. Elizabeth Blackwell may have regretted the work she put into her wonderful herbal, but we can only be be delighted by her labor of love. Overall this print is in good condition with some foxing, staining and darker staining behind image. Evidence of previous binding in left margin. Some additional darker stains in margins.

        Travels into Muscovy, Persia, and Part of the East-Indies. Containing, an accurate description of whatever is most remarkable in those countries. And embelished with above 320 copper plates, representing the finest Prospects, and most considerable Cities in those Parts; the different Habits of the People; the singular and extraordinary Birds, Fishes, and Plants which are there to be found: As likewise the Antiquities of those Countries, and particularly the noble Ruins of the famous Palace of Persepolis, called Chelminar by the Persians. The whole being delineated on the Spot, from the respective Objects. To which is added, an account of the journey of Mr. Isbrants, Ambassador from Muscovy, through Russia and Tartary, to China.

      For A. Bettesworth, and C. Hitch, London 1737 - In two volumes. Translated from the original French. First English edition. Folio (13 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches; 342 x 224 mm). [6], 228, 225-235, [362], 263-266, 241-246; [2], 1-223, [1, blank], 11, index, [1, blank] pp. In volume I, page 229-250 are misnumbered, however collates correctly. Heavily illustrated with 322 copperplate engravings, including frontispiece, frontispiece portrait, three double page maps, 44 intertextual illustrations and 275 illustrations on 114 plates, 262 of which are numbered. Of these 114 plates, 56 are double page, 45 are single page and 13 are large folding plates. Included in these large folding plates are very large pullout panoramic views of "Sphan", "Moskow." Bound in newer full calf. Boards double-ruled in gilt. Spines stamped and numbered in gilt. With original brown spine labels, lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. A bit of foxing and toning throughout, however in general the text is very clean. The majority of the plates are quite clean, some occasional toning. The two pull-out panoramas of "Sphan" and "Moskow" with some repairs to closed tears and well as some dampstaining and marginal repairs. A few instances of marginal cracking throughout, but overall very firm. A few plates bound out of sequence, as usual, images fine and clean, impressions vivid. Some leaves mis-paginated, as printed. One small (1/8" ¿ ½") ink stain (possibly by original printer) to outer right margin of last few pages of vol. 1. Preface page hinge separated from portrait, but tightly bound to spine (as seen in photo) and insignificant. A very good copy. Primarily a landscape painter, Le Bruyn began his journey to Russia in the summer of 1701, at the age of 50, leaving Amsterdam to undertake what would become a seven-year trip to the East-Indies "by way of Muscovy and Persia." The text includes his observations on cities, customs, flora and fauna, and antiquities, particularly the ruins of Persopolis. He was quite possibly the first European to visit Pasargarde. The beautiful copperplate engravings depict portraits, views, buildings, ruins, flora and fauna, and are the same plates that were used in the French edition. Originally published in Dutch (1711) and then in French (1718), this English edition is translated from the French. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(BARBIER, III, 234 - CIORANESCU, 8632). FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.         Projet de taille tarifée.

      Chez Jean Daniel Beman 1737 - - Chez Jean Daniel Beman, A Rotterdam 1737, petit in-8 (9,5x15,5cm), (1p. tit.) 338pp. 96pp., relié. - Deuxième édition en partie originale, rare. L&#39 originale a paru à Paris en 1723, l&#39 auteur insatisfait de son travail proposa cette seconde édition revue et augmentée d&#39 une seconde partie, Suplémant au projet de taille tarifée, dans laquelle il répond aux objections de ses détracteurs. Pleine basane brune mouchetée de l&#39 époque. Dos à cinq nerfs richement orné de caissons et fleurons dorés, pièce de titre de maroquin blond. Roulettes dorées sur les coupes et les coiffes. Toutes tranches mouchetées rouges. Coiffe de tête élimée, premier nerf très légèrement apparent à la jointure, un petit travail de vers affectant le dernier caisson ainsi que le mors de queue du plat inférieur. Important ouvrage dans lequel l&#39 auteur expose l&#39 idée novatrice d&#39 un système fiscal censé à la fois endiguer la mendicité et enrichir l&#39 Etat et les particuliers. Les théories développées par Castel dans ce texte constituent une première approche des solutions qui seront mises en oeuvres par les physiocrates sous le ministère Turgot. L&#39 orthographe du volume est très surprenante : elle reflète les conceptions révolutionnaires de l&#39 abbé qui souhaitait réformer phonétiquement l&#39 orthographe française.         ATLAS HISTORIQUE, or Novelle Introduction a l'Histoire, a la Chronologie & a la Geographie Ancienne & Moderne;

      Amsterdam.: Zacherie Chatelain,. 1737. hb. Tall folio. . Zacherie Chatelain (d.1723) was the father of Henri Abraham (1684-1743) and Zacherie Junior (1690-1754). They worked as a partnership publishing this atlas under several different Chatelain imprints, depending on the Chatelain family partnerships at the time of publication. The original atlas was published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720, with a second edition appearing in 1732. The maps were accompanied by information pertaining to cosmography, geography, history, chronology, genealogy, topography, heraldry, and costume of the world. The maps in the Atlas Historique were based on those of the French cartographer Guillaume De L'Isle, but were presented by the Chatelains in an encyclopedic format. The text is in French and is printed in two columns on the page with maps and other illustrations interspersed. Each map and table is numbered consecutively (see MapHist dot com). Our offering is described as "Tome II, Seconde Partie, ou Tome III" of the "Nouvelle Edition" which has been "Revue, corrigee, & considerablement augumentee". It covers Great Britain, Ireland, Switzerland, Savoy, Lorraine, and the Republic of Venice. It contains 36 folding maps, genealogical tables or charts. The binding is full contemporary calf, with seven raised bands and the spine ornamented in gilt. The binding shows minor wear but is otherwise strong and the contents are in remarkable condition. There is an elaborate engraved plate preceding the formal title page (printed in red and black). .

        Discours sur les Ancres

      Paris: Imprimerie Royale,, 1737. Piéce qui a remporté le premier Prix proposés par l'Académie Royale des Sciences pour l'année 1737. Quarto (246 × 190 mm). Contemporary spotted calf, neatly rebacked to style, red morocco label, floral tools gilt to the compartments, French fillet panel gilt to the boards, double fillet edge-roll, marbled edges and endpapers. 24 folding engraved plates. A little rubbed, light browning, but a very good copy. First edition. Extremely uncommon, OCLC locates just two copies: Swiss National Library and the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon. Bernoulli's paper was the winner of a competition set by the Académie Royale des Sciences to answer the question of what was the best possible shape for anchors. The volume also contains the second prize-winner, Tresaguet's "Memoire sur la Fabrique des Ancres", and the joint third place essays, Bernoulli's son Daniel's "Réfléxions sur la Meillure Figure a donner aux Ancres …", and le Marquis Poleni's "Dissertations Latines sur les Ancres …" Interesting and well-illustrated collection of papers exemplifying the French state's efforts to rationalize ship design and production during the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The feuding Swiss Bernoulli scientific dynasty were important contributors to a number of key areas of research, Johann or Jean made significant advances towards the development of calculus, while his son Daniel is particularly remembered for his applications of mathematics to mechanics, especially fluid mechanics, and for his pioneering work in probability and statistics.

        Manifiesto canonico legal del absoluto y libre derecho del Rey a la Percepcion de las vacantes mayores, y menores de las Iglesias de Indias y su conversion en qualesquiera usos convenientes al Estado

      Revenues from the Americas. 1737. Madrid. Diego Miguel de Peralta. In folio (288 mm x 200 mm). 1 [blank] + 1 ff. + 89 ff. 1 [blank]. Later paper wrappers. Very good copy, with only minor traces of damp.First edition. A rare treatise not found in Sabin; vindicates the royal right of the Spanish Crown to the revenues accruing from the vacancies of Churches in the Americas. There is very little information about Hontalva y Arce, who wrote consistently on the subject; he was also author of a similar work, the Alegaciones sobre el derecho que tienen de acrecer en las vacantes los prebendados de la metropolitan de Mexico y los de sus sufrageneas, printed in Mexico. Several ecclesiastical and civil authorities discussed the subject at length; it´s importance for either institution´s treasuries was critical.Palau, 116005. Medina, BHA, 3074. Not in Sabin.
