THE AMERICAN ALMANACK FOR THE YEAR OF CHRISTIAN ACCOUNT, 1738

Philadelphia, 1737. 12mo. Printed self-wrappers, stitched. Contemporary numerical ink annotation in outer margin of p.[20]. Fine, untrimmed. In a half morocco and cloth box. A fine copy of Titan Leeds' AMERICAN ALMANACK for 1738, the year of the author's death. The death of Titan Leeds was a subject of some controversy earlier in the decade, when Benjamin Franklin, writing as Richard Saunders in the first issue of the "Poor Richard" almanac (and inspired by Jonathan Swift's famous Bickerstaff hoax of 1708), predicted that his "good friend and fellow- student" would die "on October 17, 1733, 3 hr. 29 m., P.M., at the very instant of the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury." When Leeds announced his survival the following year, launching invectives at his competitor, "Saunders" responded in his 1734 almanac that his "dear friend" must, indeed, have died, as the true "Mr. Leeds was too well bred to use any man so indecently and so scurrilously" as he had used "Poor Richard" in his protests. For the next several years Richard Saunders continued to insist that Leeds was no more, and following the announcement of Leeds' actual death in 1738, Saunders printed a letter from Leeds' ghost admitting: "I did actually die at that moment, precisely at the hour you mentioned, with a variation of 5 minutes, 53 seconds." The "ghost" of Titan Leeds, in fact, hovered in the imprint of THE AMERICAN ALMANACK through its 1746 issue, the final year for which Leeds was said to have calculated the calendar before dying. In addition to the calendar, the 1738 AMERICAN ALMANACK contains schedules for courts, Quaker and Baptist meetings, and fairs; a list of roads and distances between points from Boston to South Carolina; a catalogue of living monarchs and their dates of birth; an excerpt from THE DUNCIAD; original verse; a bookseller's advertisement for Andrew Bradford; and a note to the reader with apocalyptic speculations pertaining to the Pope. The titlepage features an elaborate armorial woodcut, and a woodcut anatomical depiction of the zodiac appears on page [3].

EL REY. POR DECRETO SEÑALADO DE MI REAL MANO EN EL SITIO DE SAN ILDEPHONSO...HE VENIDO EN TOMAR LA RESOLUCION DEL TENOR SIGUIENTE...SOBRE LA PERTENENCIA, Y APLICACION DE LAS VACANTES DE LOS ARZOBISPADOS, Y OBISPADOS DE MIS INDIAS OCCIDENTALES...[caption title]

[Madrid, 1737. Folio. Dbd. Maltese cross at head of title. Accomplished in manuscript at San Ildefonso, Spain on Oct. 5, 1737, signed by Miguel de Villanueva. Manuscript inscription on verso of last printed page (see below). Contemporary annotation on first page, very light dampstaining in top margin, a few minor instances of foxing. First leaf slit near binding, still intact. A very good copy. A rare printed decree by Philip V, King of Spain, regarding vacancies which have occurred in archbishoprics and dioceses in the viceroyalties of Peru and New Spain. An advisory council composed of various theologians and the ministers of the Councils of Spain, the Inquisition, and the Indies will review this matter which affects missions throughout the New World. The King declares that the effectiveness of the missions, which furthers the goals of the Spanish empire, depends upon archbishops, bishops, ecclesiastical dignitaries, canons, prebends, and other religious figures. He states (translated here into English): "To be effective and without risk in each bishopric, the capital of its missions, that determine and establish [missions] in parts most suitable...taking in the necessary advice of the viceroys, Audiencias, and prelates, with the idea of uniting the continents, ensuring the secure communication and commerce of the people...it will be possible to expect to see successes in a few years: the pacification of the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya and Huasteca; the exploration of the continent of the Californias; the reduction of the barbarous nations of the Orinoco and of the Motilones Indians of Maracaybo, Santa Marta, and Rio de la Acha; and [ensuring] the subjugation, population, enculturation, and fertility of such an extended country as remains to be conquered while expanding the Catholic religion, and the dominions." Printed in Madrid for distribution in Spain and the New World, this copy, accomplished at San Ildefonso on Oct. 5, 1737, is signed by Miguel de Villanueva as representative of the King of Spain, with the inscription, "Yo el Rey." A manuscript note on the verso of the last printed page, written in the city of Santiago on Nov. 14, 1738, describes an instance of the distribution of the text in Chile. A rare printed decree regarding the maintenance of religious offices in the New World, with a contemporary manuscript inscription regarding the text's distribution in the viceroyalty of Peru. EUROPEAN AMERICANA records copies only at the John Carter Brown Library and the Archivo General de las Indias. Not in Medina BHA. OCLC lists copies at the JCB and the National Library of Spain.

Pflanzen, Baüme, Stauden, Kraüter, Blumen, Früchte und Schwämme.

      - Regensburg, H. Lentzen [vol 4: H.G. Neubauer], 1737-45. 4 volumes and 1 index volume. Folio (382 x 250mm). With four engraved titles in red and black, one mezzotint frontispiece and two mezzotint portraits, and 1025 (a few double-page) engraved plates, some in mezzotint, the etched plates hand-coloured, the mezzotints printed in colours and finished by hand. Contemporary uniform calf, richly gilt decorated spines in 7 compartments with red gilt lettered label, sides with gilt ornamented border and gilt corner pieces. First edition. A very fine copy bound in a very attractive contemporary German binding. Described by the Hunt catalogue as the first botanical book to utilise colour-printed mezzotint successfully. It also contains Georg Dionysus Ehret's first published botanical illustrations (although unsigned). Ehret served his apprenticeship as a botanical draughtsman under Weinmann who exploited him mercilessly, paying him a pittance for several hundred drawings he did for the 'Phythanthoza'. This led to a falling out between the two, which is perhaps why Ehret is nowhere acknowledged in the book. His drawings were engraved by Bartholomäus Seuter, Johann Ridinger and, in the later volumes, Johann Jakob Haid, who also engraved Ehret's plates for Trew's 'Plantae selectae'.Weinmann (1683-1741) was a Regensburg apothecary who organised this massive publishing project. It was financed by Seuter, one of the engravers. The text for the first twenty-five plates was written by Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs (1681-1737), who was succeeded by his son Ludwig Michael (1716-1747), and the work was completed after Weinmann's death by Ambrosius Karl Bieler (1693-1747). 'The mezzotint process used [here] had been invented by Johann Teyler in the Netherlands around 1688. As practised here by Bartholomäus Seuter (1678-1754) and Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), it was really a combination of etching and mezzotint, which made possible delicate lines and a very fine grain. The addition of handtinting brought about unusual and subtle effects. Some of the best work was done in later volumes by Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767), who also provides portraits of Weinmann and Bieler' (Hunt catalogue vol. II part II p. 160). '373 plates are signed S for Seuter and 273 plates signed H for Haid. The plates are after originals by Ehret, N. Asamin, and others, although none is so marked on the plate' (Johnston).A mint copy without the usual foxing and one of the finest copies we have seen of this rare work.Dunthorne 327; Great flower books p. 80; see Hunt 494; Johnston 388; Nissen BBI, 2126; Stafleu and Cowan 17050. This satirical writing was a great success until the late nineteenth century. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

        FATAL CURIOSITY: A TRUE TRAGEDY

1737. Paperback. Good. LILLO, [George], Mr. FATAL CURIOSITY: A TRUE TRAGEDY OF THREE ACTS. As it is acted at the New Theatre in the Hay-Market. London: Printed for John Gray at the Cross-Key in the Poultry near Cheapside, 1737. First edition. Title-page printed in red and black. Prologue by Henry Fielding. Octavo (in 4's): A-F4. 47, [1] pp. Bound in quarter- green calf with marbled boards, a red morocco label and gilt decoration to spine. Paper is lightly age-toned but clean. The top fore-corner of the final leaf is torn without any loss of text. Very good overall. Fatal Curiosity is the most artistically successful of Lillo's domestic tragedies. As he had done earlier with The London Merchant, he based this play upon a true crime, one that was first reported in a pamphlet, 'Newes from Perin in Cornwall', in 1618. It tells the simple yet poignant story of a poor elderly couple who murder and rob a young stranger only to discover, too late, that he was their long-lost son. The play was well received when it debuted in 1736, but not commercially successful. However, with revivals and adaptations, its critical reputation continued to grow throughout the century. Henry Fielding, writing four years after he first produced the play, called it a "Master-Piece" and claimed that it gave the author "Title to be called the best Tragick Poet of his Age." In 1781 it was singled out by the gentleman-scholar of Greek, James Harris, as a modern play reminiscent of the Greek tragedies in form and equal to them in power. And in Germany, at the latter part of the eighteenth century, it served as the prototype for a significant new dramatic genre, the heavily ironic and fatalistic Schicksalstragodie. (Steffensen, The Dramatic Works of George Lillo; Cross, Fielding III, p. 300). Rare.

Diario Istorico.

Canzone [.]" (In Firenze, nella stamperia di Pier Matini, 1692). Buone condizioni.
