1737. Paperback. Good. LILLO, [George], Mr. FATAL CURIOSITY: A TRUE TRAGEDY OF THREE ACTS. As it is acted at the New Theatre in the Hay-Market. London: Printed for John Gray at the Cross-Key in the Poultry near Cheapside, 1737. First edition. Title-page printed in red and black. Prologue by Henry Fielding. Octavo (in 4's): A-F4. 47, [1] pp. Bound in quarter- green calf with marbled boards, a red morocco label and gilt decoration to spine. Paper is lightly age-toned but clean. The top fore-corner of the final leaf is torn without any loss of text. Very good overall. Fatal Curiosity is the most artistically successful of Lillo's domestic tragedies. As he had done earlier with The London Merchant, he based this play upon a true crime, one that was first reported in a pamphlet, 'Newes from Perin in Cornwall', in 1618. It tells the simple yet poignant story of a poor elderly couple who murder and rob a young stranger only to discover, too late, that he was their long-lost son. The play was well received when it debuted in 1736, but not commercially successful. However, with revivals and adaptations, its critical reputation continued to grow throughout the century. Henry Fielding, writing four years after he first produced the play, called it a "Master-Piece" and claimed that it gave the author "Title to be called the best Tragick Poet of his Age." In 1781 it was singled out by the gentleman-scholar of Greek, James Harris, as a modern play reminiscent of the Greek tragedies in form and equal to them in power. And in Germany, at the latter part of the eighteenth century, it served as the prototype for a significant new dramatic genre, the heavily ironic and fatalistic Schicksalstragodie. (Steffensen, The Dramatic Works of George Lillo; Cross, Fielding III, p. 300). Rare.

A pale wetness in Volume 2 from the second sheet on the top half of the pages on the first third of the book and the last. Soon engaged in the path of skepticism and critical vision, Boureau Deslandes is'' one of the philosophers who prepared the attacks Encyclopaedists against religion and superstition, and used all his philosophy of Enlightenment. His History of Philosophy voluntarily out of this type of work. "He defines his position by challenging compilations, anecdotal biographies, attempts to reconcile ancient and modern, between paganism, Judaism and Christianity's erudition Boureau-Deslandes is considerable. Makes it an important part in the contextualization of different knowledge, and proposes a scheme of four "ages" to study, in each contemporary, "what science was included in [the] name [of philosophy]." A dissertation concerning the present state of the high roads of England, especially of those near London. Wherein is propos'd a new method of repairing and maintaining them. Read before the Royal Society the twenty-seventh day of January and the third day of February, 1736-7

London, printed: and sold by L. Gilliver and J. Clarke; J. Stephens; and J. Roberts. 1737. 8vo., 8 engraved plates (of which one is folding), (16) + 62pp., wanting the advertisement leaf, the title-page just a little soiled, rebound in old-style marbled boards with printed spine label. A very good copy. First edition: scarce. Skempton (British Civil Engineering 1640-1840: a bibliography>. 1987], 1071. Kress 4350. Goldsmiths 7537. Hanson 5107. McCulloch p.199. [See also, e.g. Gregory, The story of the road>, pp.207-211 and Sidney & Beatrice Webb, The story of the King's highway>, 1920, pp.132-3]. This is a complete and practical treatise on road-making at a period when inland transport relied almost wholly on badly maintained roads together with a few navigable rivers, one or two early canals, and a plethora of coastal traffic. The plates are remarkably good, illustrating as they do in some detail cross sections of various geological and geophysical hazards and their proposed solutions, some illustrated with a cart or coach poised at precarious angles. Later figures illustrate some of the road problems and their solutions in and close to London (Acton Road, Grosvenor Street, Hide [sic] Park, the Parade in St. James's Park, roads in Hamstead and Highgate, and Tyburn Road). Phillips was responding to the 'general complaint' about the awful state of the roads, especially those near London. 'Those that frequently travel have a double reason to complain; first, as they pay a great deal of money to the turnpikes; and then, as they find the roads daily grow worse'. Waggoners and stage-coachmen were fed up: 'nothing but the necessity of their affairs makes them bear with so much dust, or dirt, or stops, as they are sure to meet with on the roads'.

Zaragoza: Por Don Francisco Revilla Folio (29 cm; 11.5"). [14] ff., 503, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1737 Probably the most influential 18th-century Spanish study of poetics in general and Spanish poetics in particular. Luzán Claramunt was Spain's principal exponent of the Franco-Italian theories of poetics and though he failed miserably as a constructive critic, he practiced destructive criticism very effectively on the works even of Lope de Vega and Calderon! Nicely printed with elegant large head- and tailpieces (one each), handsome initials, and a perfectly charming vignette of a bird after the volume's "FIN. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking the ties; fore- and top edges of vellum rodent gnawed, top corner of all leaves slightly rodent gnawed, some staining to early fore-edges and a few others. Text almost throughout browned from iron in water used in paper manufacture, sometimes heavily enough to make this a good example of the extreme of the phenomenon, sometimes lightly enough to be called just "foxing and spotting"; paper absolutely unweakened and volume fine for use.

Among some of the topics the author treats is the method of building a loft, the generation and breeding of pigeons, identification of various types of pigeons, their diet, their usefulness and their dung. Of special interest is his chapter on carrier pigeons. He was not only a very judicious fancier, but a gentlemen (chemist) who spared no pain to make himself acquainted with the diseases of these birds and to apply the best methods of cure. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century Moore?s treatise was copied line by line and page by page, though loaded with errors. It was reissued with a new introduction by W.B. Tegetmeier, the leading authority on pigeons who ?introduced Darwin to the institutions of the fancy, took him to shows, and answered numerous queries in correspondence? (OBNB). In 1868 Tegetmeier wrote ?there is no accurate reprint of Moore?s Columbarium. Matthew Eaton?s 1852 treatise on pigeons was a ?cut up copy of Moore with additional erratic notes by Eaton.? He also pointed out that John Mayor (pseud. of Daniel Girton) in 1765 plagiarized (or as he put it ?cabbaged?) and basically copied Moore. He was surprised that Mayor ?did not have a little more candour or honour in acknowledging Moore.? Apparently no one could find an original copy, suggesting there was only one or two printed. Most writers on the subject acknowledged that they did not know whether more than one copy of this work even existed. It was also noted in the Journal of Horticulture and Cottage Gardner, October 24, 1865, Volume XXXIV, page 350, that finding a copy of the original took Eaton a few years, a great deal of money, and when he finally found a copy, ?he had to bribe the fancier.? The story goes that apparently Moore was timid, and had little cash. With the few copies unsold his wife used to light their fire. Much of the research on this work is concerned with the history of finding an original copy such as we offer here. OCLC locates 5 copies in America, of which only 3 have the full 80 pages; British Museum Catalogue notes 4 copies, though only 1 has the full 80 pages; Casey Wood, p. 471
