The Memoirs of Sig. Gaudentio di Lucca: Taken from his Confessions and Examinations before the Fathers of the Inquisition at Bologna in Italy. Making a Discovery of an Unknown Country in the Deserts of Africa, as Ancient, Populous, and Civilized, as the Chinese. With an Account of their Antiquity, Origine, Religion, Customs, Polity, &c. and the Manner how they got first over those vast Deserts. Interspersed with several most suprizing and curious Incidents. Copied from the Original Manuscript kept in St Mark's Library at Venice; With critical Notes of the learned Sig. Rhedi, late Library-Keeper of the said Library. To which is prefixed, A Letter of the Secretary of the Inquisition, to the same Signor Rheni, giving an Account of Manner and Causes of his being seized.       T. Cooper, London., 1737. First edition. Octavo. pp xvi, 335. Period binding of full calf with raised bands, gilt rules, later leather title-label on spine. A utopian novel which was for many years attributed to Bishop Berkeley. The narrative relates a sojourn in the remote African community of Mezorania whose social system supposedly bears ancestral traces of that of the Ancient Egyptians. It is therefore sometimes described as an early Lost Race novel.Inscribed on the title-page: ''Mary Hornyold [sic], hers - given her by the Author.'' On the front pastedown is the armorial engraved bookplate of Thomas Hornyhold of Blackmore Park. Some creasing to free endpapers an first blank. Hinges cracking but tight. Occasional foxing. Some staining to margins, not affecting text. Covers a bit rubbed. Very good. Scarce.

[John Pine, engraver] Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera [First Issue]

Londini [London]: aeneis tabulis incidit Iohannes Pine [through 1737], 1733. First Edition. Morocco. Fine. First issue (inscription on the medal of Augustus Caesar, in vol. 2, p. 108, reads "post est," later corrected to "potest") of John Pine's "tour de force" (Blumenthal), the legendary edition of the Works of Horace, the "most elegant of English eighteenth century books." (Ray), " far ahead of its time and an influence on the future." (Levarie) Two octavo volumes, collated and complete: [30],264,[2]; [24],191,[1],[14]pp, with 324 copper-engraved portraits, vignettes, and head and tail pieces. As with most copies, our set does not include the folded letterpress leaf headed "List of the antiques in the first volume of Horace," which must have been added quite late in the print run. "The engravings are executed on a very stout, clear paper, and the tout ensemble presents to the eye a very pleasing appearance." (Moss) What's more, "copies which contain the first impressions [of the engravings, as ours] are valuable and much sought after." (Dibdin) Beautifully bound in red morocco, covers with gilt panels and corner-pieces, spines densely gilt in compartments between raised bands with gilt lettering to two compartments, wide elaborately gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, multicolored silk page ribbon in each volume. Expertly rebacked by the Old English Bindery retaining original spines. A fresh copy in a very handsome binding, "remarkable for the beauty of its engraving." (Lowndes) Brunet III, 320. Lewine, p. 246. Graesse III, 354. Legacies of Genius 15. Moss II, 23-24. Dibdin II, 108. Lowndes II, 1113. Rothschild 1546-47. Blumenthal, Art of the Printed Book, p. 24 and plate 72. Ray, p. 3. Bland p. 216 and fig.186. Levarie, pp. 245-6. PMM 105. a high point of Augustan taste. John Pine (1690-1756) was the "best English engraver in the first half of the [eighteenth] century. His edition of Horace is engraved throughout, text as well as ornament, though it is said that the text was first set in type and an impression transferred to the plate before it was engraved. The results are a unity between decoration and text which at times suggests Didot's Horace of 1799; a contrast between thick and thin strokes in the letters which naturally follows from the engraving process but which foreshadows the type design of Baskerville, Bodoni, and Didot; and the wide "leading" between the lines of the text which did so much to give their pages a brilliant effect." (PMM) "The subscription list printed at the beginning of the book must be one of the most illustrious of its kind, naming the great and the good from every corner of Europe, including the kings of England, Spain, and Portugal."

Leiden / Rotterdam: Apud Samuelem Luchtman / Apud Johannem Danielem Beman, 1737. First Edition thus. Vellum. Fine. The much-praised Oudendorp edition, in two quarto volumes bound in one: [26],516;[2],517-1035,[33] pp, with additional engraved title page (signed F. v. BleysWyck), 3 engraved folding maps (of the Roman Empire, France, and Spain), portrait of Caesar, and 9 engraved plates (4 folding). Plates are are those of the Greave edition of 1713. Full vellum, covers paneled in gilt with floral device at corners and large armorial center ornament; spine divided into six compartments by gilt-ruled raised bands, center floral ornament in each, second lettered by hand; armorial book plate of Royal Military College to front paste down and small old stamp of Her Majestie's Stationary Office to recto of dedication leaf; replacement salmon-pink ribbon ties; title page and divisional title in red and black with woodcut vignette. A truly spectacular survival, binding square and tight; pages clean and bright with virtually no spotting; maps (none torn or misfolded) and plates in deep, rich impressions; small pull to vellum at front upper right corner. Dibdin (Greek and Latin Classics), pp. 363-64. Schweiger II, p. 46-47. Pökel, p. 197. Ebert 3282. Graesse II, p. 8. Brunet I, pp. 1456-57 (bonne édition). Moss I, p. 236 "An excellent edition."). First Oudendorp Edition, celebrated for the rigor of its scholarship and faithfulness of its translation. Dibdin calls it an "admirable and truly critical edition, comprehending the labours of Davis, Clarke and Vossius. 'The preceding commentaries on Caesar,' says Harles, 'have all been eclipsed by the skill and researches of Oudendorp; who, by a careful examination of numerous MSS. and editions, has often successfully restored the true ancient reading of his author'". To which Ebert adds: "A new and excellent recension of MSS. and old editions, and a good selection of annotations." Composed of eight books, the Gallic Wars is "Julius Caesar's account of his campaigns in Gaul from 58 to 52 BCE, with the eighth and final book added by Aulus Hirtius for the years 51-50 BCE. . . . Caesar gives surprising space to the exploits of centurions and legions, as though the contribution of non-senatorial citizens is one of his prime concerns. It is tempting to think that he is both claiming and parading a particular relationship with the lesser citizens of Rome and Italy. . . . The Gauls are not deployed according to barbarian stereotypes . . . Gallic and German leaders communicate articulately in Roman terms, Gallic armies are highly formidable, and some Gauls are allies."         The works of Francis Rabelais, M.D. Now carefully revised, and compared throughout with the late new edition of M. Le du Chat, By Mr. Ozell. Who has likewise added at the bottom of the pages, a translation of the notes, historical, critical, and explanatory, of the said M. du Chat, and others: in which notes, never before printed in English, the text is not only explained, but, in multitudes of places, amended, and made conformable to the first and best Editions of this learned and facetious author. Adorn'd with 15 very neat copper-plates

London: printed by J. Hughs, near Lincoln’s-Inn-Fields, for J. Brindley, bookseller to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, at the King’s-Arms in New-Bond-Street; and C. Corbett, at Addison’s Head, against St. Dunstan’s Church, Fleet-street, , MDCCXXXVII [1737]. Full Calf. Fine. Complete in five volumes. 12mo: iii-xxii,iii-viii,cxxxiv,135-384; iii-x,11-251,[1]; xx,367[2 misnumbered 22],[5]; iii-xc,281,[13, including two final advertisement leaves]; lxiv,267,[5]pp, with 15 copper-engraved plates (11 of which are folding, one of which is a map), numerous head- and tailpieces, and a woodcut in the text. An excellent set, beautifully bound by Fitterer in period-style butterscotch cat's-paw calf, spines in six compartments between raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco lettering pieces gilt, all edges gilt, marbled end papers, title pages (all five of which are cancels) printed in red and black. Lowndes 2033. ESTC Citation No. T13265. The first complete and scholarly edition in English. Principally the story of two giants, a father (Gargantua) and his son (Pantagruel), and their adventures, presented as a connected series of five novels written in the 16th century in an extravagant, satirical vein featuring much crudity, scatological humor, and violence (the censors of the Sorbonne stigmatized the novels as obscene). While the first two books focus on the lives of the giants, the rest of the series is mostly devoted to the adventures of Pantagruel's friends, including Panurge, a roguish erudite maverick, and Brother Jean, a bold, voracious and boozing ex-monk, and others on a collective naval journey in search of the Divine Bottle. "Reading Rabelais is no easy matter. His language constitutes an initial obstacle. Replete with clerical, medical, legal, philosophical, scholastic terms and terminology, various classical, foreign, or invented tongues, provincial dialects and urban slang, poems, anagrams, abbreviations, sounds, names, and quotations, his writing displays one of the most varied and extensive lexical ranges of any world author. Intertextuality is rampant, usually displaced by willful distortion. And more is suggested than said, making every word even more polyvalent. Equally disturbing is his recounting the story of a family of giants in a learned, highly literary language. Ultimate meaning, frequently glimpsed but forever elusive, is another. So much so that there are almost as many readings of his works as readers, a positive sign of their successful resistance to any definitive interpretation and a sure criterion of their literariness." (Floyd Gray, "Reading the works of Rabelais," The Cambridge Companion to Rabelais.) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition.         Die Kunst zu Fliegen nach Art der Vögel.

First and only edition of this rare and intriguing little work on mechanical flight by Carl Friederich Meerwein (1737-1810), architect and engineer to the Prince of Baden. Meerwein was a very early aeronautical theorist and experimenter, and in this volume he discusses "how to fly in the manner of birds. First, he argues that humans cannot fly like birds because of issues such as their anatomy and gravity. However, he did believe that machines could be constructed, using rotors, which could fly and be steered" (Lynn, The Sublime Invention, p. 55). Meerwein's theoretical contribution to the study of flight was to derive the size of the wings needed to lift a human. The flying apparatus he designed, and which is illustrated in the two plates in this volume, consisted of "two light wooden frames (shaped, when outspread, like the longitudinal section of a spindle) covered with calico, hinged at the centre, and affording a slightly concave surface of 111 feet. Meerwein was probably the first to calculate the area of wing surface necessary to support a man, and taking as a basis the weight and wing area of a wild duck, he laid down that a man with his machine weighing 200lb. would require about 126 square feet - an estimate the approximate accuracy of which was verified by Lilienthal. But Meerwein's attempt to experiment with his machine at Giessen was not successful - indeed it would have been impossible to work the wings with anything like sufficient rapidity to raise himself from the ground" (Hodgson, The History of Aeronautics in Great Britain, p. 44). Meerwein's book is rare - we can only locate copies in the British Library and the Bavarian State Library - and this copy is the only one that appears in auction records. It is very attractive in the original wrappers and with the plates in excellent, fresh condition. Mit Kupfern. Frankfurt & Basel: H. L. Bronner and J. J. Thurnensen, 1784. Octavo. Original paper wrappers. 2 folding engraved plates. The leaves are untrimmed save for the extreme lower edge of the title. Spine chipped and repaired. Contents fresh. Excellent condition.

MINORUM S. FRANCISCI CAPUCCINORUM DECISO TRACTATUS. In quo luculenter disseritur de controversiis decisis quoad Fundationes Ecclesiarum, Conventuum, & Hospitiorum, Elemosinas, Legata, Haereditates, Jus funerandi & sepeliendi .
