Alexander Pope
London: Linton, Dodsley et al, 1736. A contemporary set made up of early issues of the individual volumes of the complete works. With the armorial bookplate, wax seal and signature of Charles Craigie dated 1740. Alexander Pope was an 18th century English poet best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the third most quoted writer in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Historically, Pope enjoyed popularity in his lifetime and this interest was revived in the 20th century. Lord Byron identified Pope as one of his chief influences, however Pope was not wholly popular during the Romantic movement. His poetry was appreciated in the 20th century for its peppering of historical references to people and places of his time, giving a broader understanding of the past. He is also remembered for his collected edition of Shakespeare's work for which he was criticized for over editing. CONDITION In contemporary speckled calf. Externally, very smart with some rubbing and bumping. Some wear to spine with loss to spine labels. All with armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Wax seal and signature to front free-endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright with scattered spotting. Some tidemarks to first and last few pages and some closed tears to pages throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

DUPUIS, Charles-François.
Buchwald & Josefowicz, The zodiac of Paris, pp. 43-62; Edelstein, The terror of natural right, pp. 243-244; Poggendorff I, p. 630; Wellcome II, p. 503. First separate edition of an erudite treatise on the astronomical foundations of religion and mythology. In the late 18th century, the notion of a common origin of all religions had become popular among French Enlightenment radicals, thereby challenging the Church's claim to absolute truth and moving as close as possible to atheism. Basing himself on the work of the astronomer Bailly (1736-1793), Dupuis investigated the origin of the constellations of the zodiac in relation to their given names. Since the constellations do not in any way represent the figure after which they are named, Dupuis concluded that they must have been older than their Greek names would suggest. The signs must have had some sort of connection with the state of the earth and agricultural labour, working as a calendar, and Dupuis ultimately found his original civilization in Upper Egypt, 15 to 16 thousand years ago. On this basis, Dupuis founded his thesis that all religions derived from the Egyptian zodiac and that all gods in various mythologies, including the Christian God, were allegories of the sun. After publication, the theory was refuted by Bailly, although he praised Dupuis's erudition and ingenuity. Nevertheless, the theory proved popular with radical revolutionaries.Binding somewhat worn, notably the hinges and back board. With some spots and a small hole in the gutter margin of pp. 187-188; a very good copy.

Iemand laadt flessen in draagmanden. [Click Below for Full Description]

PARACELSUS, Theophrastus
1736. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "All things are poisons, for there is nothing without poisonous qualities. It is only the dose which makes a thing poison." ― Paracelsus A rare, small German religious handbook by Paracelsus. This book includes the Bible in German but also short commentary and writings on religious secrets and wisdom on discovering hidden truths in scripture. Theophrasti Bombastus, or Paracelsus, was an important Renaissance physician, alchemist, and occult astrologist. He is remembered for his modern approach to medical thought, differing from that of great thinkers like Aristotle. However, his approaches to medicine were not considered effective or 'true' medicine. Paracelsus detailed the use of magic and the zodiac as the secret to his disease cures. He even included instances of necromancy and witchcraft as remedies to certain ailments. [Attributes: First Edition]
