SUMMARY: •An Universal Etymological English Dictionary was a dictionary compiled by Nathan Bailey (or Nathaniel Bailey) and first published in London in 1721. It was the most popular English dictionary of the eighteenth century. As an indicator of its popularity it reached its 20th edition in 1763 and its 27th edition in 1794. In compiling his dictionary, Bailey borrowed greatly from John Kersey's Dictionarium Anglo-Britannicum (1706), which in turn drew from the later editions of Edward Phillips's The New World of English Words. Like Kersey's dictionary, Bailey's dictionary was one of the first monolingual English dictionaries to focus on defining words in common usage, rather than just difficult words. BACKGROUND: •Nathan Bailey (died 27 June 1742), was an English philologist and lexicographer. He was the author of several dictionaries, including his Universal Etymological Dictionary, which appeared in some 30 editions between 1721 and 1802. Bailey's Dictionarium Britannicum (1730 and 1736) was the primary resource mined by Samuel Johnson for his Dictio … [Click Below for Full Description]

This edition followed fast on the first (1730 vs. 1736), the last volumes having not even been completed by the author yet, when the publishers began this second edition. It speaks to the contemporary popularity of this history. Montesquieu's magnificent praise : " An honest man (Rollin) who, by his works of history, enchanted the public, it is the heart that speaks to the heart, one feels a secret satisfaction to hear virtue speak, it is the bee of France ". SUMMARY: An Universal Etymological English Dictionary was a dictionary compiled by Nathan Bailey (or Nathaniel Bailey) and first published in London in 1721. BACKGROUND: Nathan Bailey (died 27 June 1742), was an English philologist and lexicographer. He was the author of several dictionaries, including his Universal Etymological Dictionary, which appeared in some 30 editions between 1721 and 1802. Bailey's Dictionarium Britannicum (1730 and 1736) was the primary resource mined by Samuel Johnson for his Dict … [Click Below for Full Description]

PHARMACOPOEA TAURINENSIS
Turin, Jean-Baptiste Chais, 1736. 4to, pp. [viii], 246, [16], with 2 large folding plates; woodcut printer's device and two engraved woodcut initials with architectural scenes; first and last leaves lightly browned, tear restored with no loss to second plate; a very good, crisp copy, bound in contemporary full vellum, rubbed at corners, joints strengthened.First edition of this Turin pharmacopoeia, prepared by doctors at the city's medical college at the order of Charles Emmanuel III, Duke of Savoy. Its first section comprises a list of all substances generally used in the preparation of medicines, with synonyms and notes to aid the user in distinguishing between plants which look similar, which the authors 'deemed extremely useful for younger apothecaries'. The second section contains recipes for simple and compound medicines, including potions, infusions, decoctions, syrups, powders, lozenges, tablets, spirits, salts, tinctures, precipitates, oils, ointments and plasters. Some of these, the authors claim, 'depart somewhat from the common method of preparation'.It notably features the first appearance of the recipe for vinum absinthites (wormwood wine), which in 1786 formed the basis of Antonio Benedetto Carpano's first commercial recipe for Vermouth. In the seventeenth century wormwood was considered an effective remedy for treating the plague. The pharmacopoea does not detail which ailments ought to be treated with which concoction, only the method and equipment for preparing them and the precise quantities of ingredients required. The two large folding plates by Giusepp … [Click Below for Full Description]

LONDON. 1736 The First Edition of Bishop Butler's masterpiece of natural theology, arguably the most important and influential work of theological reasoning in the English language. Written in response to the 18th-century Deists, who rejected the claims of Christian revelation, Butler's Analogy seeks to defend the credibility of the Christian faith by showing, as the title suggests, the analogy or conformity of both natural and revealed religion with our knowledge of the empirical world. Religious knowledge, he argues, does not differ significantly from other forms of knowledge; there is no more difficulty believing in the articles of religion than in the laws of nature. In contrast to the metaphysical speculations of his friend Samuel Clarke, Butler relies on inductive reasoning from empirical facts to establish the probable (though not absolute) grounds for the claims of religion. In this he is in agreement with Hume, who was a student and great admirer of Butler's work, ranking him with Locke and Berkeley as one of the pionee … [Click Below for Full Description]

GORDON, William
1736.. actually surveyed after a New Method by William Gordon, Gent, 1736. Engraved map on two sheets (each 480 by 680mm). William Gordon is known only through the production of two surveys, of Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire. The seats of local gentry are shown with small shields bearing the arms of the inhabitants next to them. A two inch grid has been engraved over the map with letters in the borders forming a reference key to the Index Villaris, which lists “Names of Places and Chief Persons” of over 160 towns and villages in the county. The map is dedicated to Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, and Lord Lieutenant of Bedford. Grey was a rather unsuccessful politician, who was nicknamed “Bug” in the House of Lords for his unpleasant body odour. He was more successful as a patron of the Royal Academy of Music, and a founding governor of the Foundling's Hospital. Rodger 1.

With the armorial bookplate, wax seal and signature of Charles Craigie dated 1740. Alexander Pope was an 18th century English poet best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the third most quoted writer in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Historically, Pope enjoyed popularity in his lifetime and this interest was revived in the 20th century. Lord Byron identified Pope as one of his chief influences, however Pope was not wholly popular during the Romantic movement. His poetry was appreciated in the 20th century for its peppering of historical references to people and places of his time, giving a broader understanding of the past. He is also remembered for his collected edition of Shakespeare's work for which he was criticized for over editing. CONDITION In contemporary speckled calf.
