Henry Fielding
J. Watts, 1736. Pasquin. A Dramatick Satire on the Times: Being the Rehersal of Two Plays, Viz. A Comedy Call'd, The Election; and a Tragedy call'd, The Life and Death of Common-Sense. As it is Acted at the Theatre in the Hay-Market. By Henry Fielding Published by J. Watts 1736 (4), 64, (2)p. Rebound in full calf. First edition. Publishers catalogue to the rear. Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was an author and magistrate "For two seasons in 1736 and 1737 Fielding managed and wrote for his own company of comedians at the Haymarket. In 'Pasquin' and 'The Historical Register', two of his most successful plays, he emulated the 'old comedy' of Aristophanes in satires of a markedly personal and topical cast, ridiculing the follies of the town and targeting in particular the corruption and incompetence of Walpole's ministry. His popularity at this time was such that he was entertaining thoughts of building his own theatre when Walpole acted to silence him. In June 1737 parliament passed the Theatrical Licensing Act, which limited theatrical performances to Drury Lane, Covent Garden, and the Royal Opera House, and imposed censorship of the stage." - ODNB Condition: Very good. Top of the front hinge is only just starting. Light shelfwear. Some fading. Small pencil inscription to the pastedowns. Offsetting to the endpapers. Small chip to the title page. Very occasional spot. Close cropped with slight loss to the word 'Pasquin' at the top of some of the pages. [Attributes: First Edition]

Sarpi, Fra-Paolo (Text by); Pierre-François Le Courayer (Translated into French, with Notes by); George Vertue (Engravings by)
J. Wetstein; G. Smith, Amsterdam 1736 - Quarto (10 1/4 x 8"). [14], lxxv, [1], 696pp; [4], 848pp. Modern half brown calf over light green cloth, with gold lettering and tooling to spines, retaining the original gilt-lettered leather titles. All paper edges red. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, and engraved portrait of Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach (Queen of Great Britain as the wife of King George II), by George Vertue. Title vignettes. Title pages in red and black lettering. This work was originally published in London in 1619 by Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623), an Italian historian, prelate, scientist, canon lawyer, and statesman active on behalf of the Venetian Republic during the period of its successful defiance of the papal interdict (1605-1607) and its war (1615-1617) with Austria over the Uskok pirates. The author published it under the name of Pietro Soave Polano, an anagram of Paolo Sarpi Veneto (plus o). The book's emphasis was on the role of the Papal Curia, and its slant on the Curia hostile. Sarpi's work attained such fame that the Vatican opened its archives to Cardinal Pietro Sforza Pallavicino, whom it commissioned to write a three volume rebuttal, entitled the "Istoria del Concilio di Trento, scritta dal P. Sforza Pallavicino, della Comp. di Giesù ove insieme rifiutasi con auterevoli testimonianze un Istoria falsa divolgata nello stesso argomento sotto nome di Petro Soave Polano" ("The History of the Council of Trent written by P. Sforza Pallavicino, of the Company of Jesus, in which a false history upon the same argument put fort … [Click Below for Full Description]

Graber, Johann Georg, & Johann Georg Gichtel.
[N.p.]: Auf vieler Verlangen aufs neue dem Druck übergeben... 1736. Small 8vo, 175, [1(instructions to binder)] pp. Double-page frontispiece containing two images; folding cosmic diagram; and two plates, all hand-colored copperplate engravings; the diagram & plates tipped onto the fore-edges of text leaves. Title-page printed in red & black. Contemporary brown & white marbled boards, paper backstrip label, in modern beige buckram folding box with paper backstrip label. Covers well worn; some minor internal staining and neat annotation; small ballpoint arrow on title-page indicating date '1696'; name of the author of the foreword on p. [2]; overall a sound copy of this important mystical text with astonishing illustrations. Second Edition; the work was evidently compiled in 1696 and first published in Leiden in 1723. Later editions were issued in 1779 & 1850; and the book may well be in print today. This edition is most uncommon, with OCLC locating it only at Duke and the Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek in Gottingen. Johann Georg Gichtel (1638-1710) was a theologian and attorney who embraced mysticism and the teachings of the inspirational Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), whose works he edited in 1682-1683. Gichtel wound up leading a life of ecstatic poverty in Amsterdam as head of a small cult known as Gichtelians or Brethren of the Angel. Their goal, and the thrust of this complex hermetic-mystical treatise, is the understanding of Divine Wisdom through self-knowledge and through freedom from all carnal desires. The four human images in the frontispiece and pl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blackwell believed that culture was learned, not inherent (a cornerstone of modern cultural anthropology), and that Homer's rank as a supreme epic poet "was the outcome of a specific historical context, social organization, geography, and climate, which combined to shape the culture he represented and which provided an ethos uniquely favourable to epic poetry. . . . ERSKINE, James, Lord Grange]
London printed for A. Dodd, 1736. 8vo., (2) + iv + 50 + 13 + (1)pp., wanting the half-title, inner margin of title strengthened, recently well bound in linen-backed marbled boards lettered. A very good copy with the blank spaces in the 13pp. of Appendix completed with all the names added in contemporary manuscript. First edition: variant issue. A marvellous piece illustrating the unashamed use of blackmail and bribery for political ends at this period, during a critical period of Walpole's administration in London. The Porteous riots in Edinburgh and Walpole's refusal to support the repeal of the Test Act, visibly reduced Walpole's base in the Commons. Scotland was particularly difficult with further Jacobite plottings barely off-stage. James Erskine of Grange (1679-1754), the Scottish judge, clearly played at least on the fringes of Jacobitism. Politically strongly anti-Walpole, Erskine is known to history as much for being his wife's husband as for anything else. She was Rachel Chiesly whom originally Grange had debauched and then married under compulsion. 'Proud, violent, and jealous like her family, she was also a drunkard, and at times an imbecile. Her conduct was an open scandal .' [DNB]. Having accused her husband of treason and stolen some of his private papers, Lady Grange was imprisoned by Jacobite friends of Lord Grange, being held captive on the remote island of St. Kilda for 7 years. Grange's Fatal consequences of ministerial influence> is a political essay condemning Walpole's use of payments, bribes, sinecures and places for supporters in both Houses of Parli … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILDE, Jacob.
Stockholm, Historiographi regni tryckeri, af Hartwig Gercken, 1736. 4:o. (20),+ 131 s. Tryckt på bättre papper. Samtida något nött skinnband, rygg med upphöjda bind, något trasig i övre kapitäl. Vackert gröna och röda för- och eftersättsblad. Titelbladet med överstrukna namnteckningar i bläck. Med Kurt Winbergs exlibris. SWIM 25:4.
