NEWTON, Sir Isaac
Henry Woodfall, London, 1736. With engraved frontispiece, interpolated leaf [143-144], and leaf containing errata on the recto, publisher's advertisements on the verso. Paneled sprinkled calf in a contemporary style; a large paper copy with very wide margins, a few contemporary annotations. First edition of Newton's treatise on the calculus, a work of great importance and rarity. Ready for publication in 1671, Newton circulated the manuscript among his friends who urged him to establish priority by publishing his own work. He steadfastly refused and prior to his death entrusted it to Henry Pemberton who never had it published. It was not until 1736 that Method of fluxions was finally published in the present English translation by John Colson, who added a lengthy commentary. The original Latin edition did not appear until 1779 in the Opera omnia. [Attributes: First Edition]

Alexander POPE, Germain-François Poullain de SAINT-FOIX
French Edition of The Essay on Man translated by Etienne de Silhouette, and second edition of the Turkish Letters published for the first time in 1730 by the same publisher in Cologne. Modern parchment cardboard. Piece as black sheepskin. The human trial, philosophical poem Pope is translated into prose, and is preceded by a long preface of the translator. Letters in Turkey, Saint-Foix was inspired by the model of Montesquieu (itself was modeled after the Chinese Spy Manara), but if the letters are held on the same principle, they do not contain Montesquieu and the lengths of the descriptions, they are all assigned to the whole story and the comparison of manners and customs in French and Turkish. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. RADICATI, A., COMTE DE PASSERAN.
A Rotterdam, Chez la Veuve Thomas Johnson et Fils, 1736. x, 14, (2), 15-384 pp. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering (faded), corners, marbled boards, red sprinkled edges, spine rubbed. Conlon 36:632; Graesse, Trésor des Livres Rares, vi, p. 16; Brunet 4, col. 1086; L'Illuminismo Italiano alla Fondazione Feltrinelli, 436; Peignot, ii, p. 231 ('Rare'); Le Bûcher Bibliographique, 784. The very rare first edition of this important work. 'Alberto Radicate di Passerano is the most surprising and significant political and intellectual product of the age of Victor Emadeus II' (F. Venturi, Italy and Enlightenment. Studies in a Cosmopolitan Century, chapter 3, which is entirely devoted to Radicati, his exile in England and Holland and his works). 'Radicati di Passerano did not pass through the world unnoticed. From Jean-Baptiste Argens to Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, from Voltaire to Johann Lorenz Mosheim, from Prosper Marchand to Johann Anton Trinius, a multitude of voices attested to the extent to which his troubled and desperate presence, and his radical and extreme reflections were vital to the panorama of Europe's cultural life' (Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment, vol. 3, pp. 387-388).'Steeped in Machiavelli, Sarpi, and Bayle, Radicati also at some point discovered Spinoza, who became the prime influence on the further elaboration and growing radicalism of his ideas on society and politics, as well as in philosophy and religion. He was entirely at one with Spinoza in regarding 'democratical' government 'the most ancient and agreeable to … [Click Below for Full Description]

POELLNITZ, baron de;
Buchwald & Josefowicz, The zodiac of Paris, pp. 43-62; Edelstein, The terror of natural right, pp. 243-244; Poggendorff I, p. 630; Wellcome II, p. 503. First separate edition of an erudite treatise on the astronomical foundations of religion and mythology. In the late 18th century, the notion of a common origin of all religions had become popular among French Enlightenment radicals, thereby challenging the Church's claim to absolute truth and moving as close as possible to atheism. Basing himself on the work of the astronomer Bailly (1736-1793), Dupuis investigated the origin of the constellations of the zodiac in relation to their given names. Since the constellations do not in any way represent the figure after which they are named, Dupuis concluded that they must have been older than their Greek names would suggest. The signs must have had some sort of connection with the state of the earth and agricultural labour, working as a calendar, and Dupuis ultimately found his original civilization in Upper Egypt, 15 to 16 thousand years ago. On this basis, Dupuis founded his thesis that all religions derived from the Egyptian zodiac and that all gods in various mythologies, including the Christian God, were allegories of the sun.After publication, the theory was refuted by Bailly, although he praised Dupuis's erudition and ingenuity. Nevertheless, the theory proved popular with radical revolutionaries.Binding somewhat worn, notably the hinges and back board. With some spots and a small hole in the gutter margin of pp. 187-188; a very good copy.

Baroque pattern book and album
1736. Oblong folio (390 x 252 mm). 118 numbered ff. (but 115: ff. 96, 106, and 112 skipped). Calligraphic preface by Hörmannsperger, 58 full-page textile designs by the same, mostly in red, blue, green, and gilt (including one folded, double-page sized specimen and 4 ff. with 2 designs each), 7 splendid gouache washes raised in gilt and silver; bound in between these are a total of 52 engravings on 48 plates, all in splendid contemporary colour raised in gilt and silver. Contemp. marbled boards. Unique, museum-quality document of late Baroque craftsmanship among the urban Third Estate: apart from 58 meticulously executed textile designs, the album contains seven large-format gouaches showing the self-assured author practising his trade in his workshop, advertising and selling his wares to customers, as well as playing music and even bowling, but also attending the general meeting of the Viennese blanket makers. The engravings which Hörmannsperger inserted between his own works all show mundane subjects (dwarves, soldiers, caricatures, etc.): thus, his autograph textile designs and gouaches are interleaved with some of the rarest and most charming pieces produced by the 1720's Augsburg school of engraving. - The album is introduced by a self-portrait of the 26-year-old Hörmannsperger in his workshop (with his compass and one of the later-included textile designs lying on the table); on the opposite page he offers a brief preface to the volume: "for true art speaks for the master: here is a book, all mine, with many drawings, as they will be seen, all drawn by me, though I sa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers.In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Iemand laadt flessen in draagmanden. [Click Below for Full Description]
