[Coutumes]
WARBURTON, William.
London: Printed for Fletcher Gyles, 1736. Octavo (194 x 119 mm). Contemporary sprinkled lozenge panelled calf, spine with blind rules in compartments, sides with double-rule border and corner decoration in blind, red morocco label, sprinkled edges. Engraved armorial bookplate of Charles Beridge to front pastedown, with contemporary note in ink to rear endpaper. Slight surface wear to rear cover; pale damp mark to outer corner of final sixty pages; a very good copy. First edition of Warburton's "controversial defence of the established church and the Test Acts. Warburton argued that religion alone can supply the rewards necessary to ensure that individual virtue continues to underpin the proper function of civil government. The magistrate was to oversee the government of the body, the church that of the soul. Fundamental to the alliance so formed was the influence that the church could give to the service of the state, and the support and protection that the state could in turn give to the church. Above all the church was to oversee that popular measure of the early and mid-eighteenth-century Church of England, the 'reformation of manners'. Warburton argued that an established denomination provided moral security for the state, and that it should therefore be composed by the majority confession of the nation, thereby standing clear of any multiplication and fragmentation into sectarianism. Sectarianism he identified as the source of contention and internal wars. Reflection on the legacy of the civil war, a subject on which he had planned to write a history, comprised a major … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paneled sprinkled calf in a contemporary style; a large paper copy with very wide margins, a few contemporary annotations. First edition of Newton's treatise on the calculus, a work of great importance and rarity. Ready for publication in 1671, Newton circulated the manuscript among his friends who urged him to establish priority by publishing his own work. French Edition of The Essay on Man translated by Etienne de Silhouette, and second edition of the Turkish Letters published for the first time in 1730 by the same publisher in Cologne. Modern parchment cardboard. Piece as black sheepskin. The human trial, philosophical poem Pope is translated into prose, and is preceded by a long preface of the translator. The very rare first edition of this important work. 'Alberto Radicate di Passerano is the most surprising and significant political and intellectual product of the age of Victor Emadeus II' (F. Venturi, Italy and Enlightenment. Studies in a Cosmopolitan Century, chapter 3, which is entirely devoted to Radicati, his exile in England and Holland and his works). 'Radicati di Passerano did not pass through the world unnoticed. From Jean-Baptiste Argens to Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, from Voltaire to Johann Lorenz Mosheim, from Prosper Marchand to Johann Anton Trinius, a multitude of voices attested to the extent to which his troubled and desperate presence, and his radical and extreme reflections were vital to the panorama of Europe's cultural life' (Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment, vol. 3, pp. 387-388).'Steeped in Machiavelli, Sarpi, and Bayle, Radicati also at some point discovered Spinoza, who became the prime influence on the further elaboration and growing radicalism of his ideas on society and politics, as well as in philosophy and religion. He was entirely at one with Spinoza in regarding 'democratical' government 'the most ancient and agreeable to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Buchwald & Josefowicz, The zodiac of Paris, pp. 43-62; Edelstein, The terror of natural right, pp. 243-244; Poggendorff I, p. 630; Wellcome II, p. 503. First separate edition of an erudite treatise on the astronomical foundations of religion and mythology. In the late 18th century, the notion of a common origin of all religions had become popular among French Enlightenment radicals, thereby challenging the Church's claim to absolute truth and moving as close as possible to atheism. Basing himself on the work of the astronomer Bailly (1736-1793), Dupuis investigated the origin of the constellations of the zodiac in relation to their given names. Since the constellations do not in any way represent the figure after which they are named, Dupuis concluded that they must have been older than their Greek names would suggest. The signs must have had some sort of connection with the state of the earth and agricultural labour, working as a calendar, and Dupuis ultimately found his original civilization in Upper Egypt, 15 to 16 thousand years ago. On this basis, Dupuis founded his thesis that all religions derived from the Egyptian zodiac and that all gods in various mythologies, including the Christian God, were allegories of the sun. After publication, the theory was refuted by Bailly, although he praised Dupuis's erudition and ingenuity. Nevertheless, the theory proved popular with radical revolutionaries.Binding somewhat worn, notably the hinges and back board. With some spots and a small hole in the gutter margin of pp. 187-188; a very good copy.
