There is a new section, designated as Second Appendix to the Fifth Book, describing saltpeter plantations and the manufacture of gunpowder. This is illustrated with three new woodcuts showing recrystallization of saltpeter and the milling and graining of gunpowder." - Sisco & Smith, p. 334. "Although the title-page credit one 'J.E.C.' with editing and enlarging it, this is essentially a reprint of the 1703 edition, with an added section on gunpowder, illustrated by engravings of powder mills and graining shops. 'J.E.C.' may stand for Johann Hiskias Cardilucius, who wrote the Foreword to the 1672 edition . . . the illustrations in this 1736 edition are identical with the ones in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

TURNER, Daniel
London: R. Wilkin et al, 1736. Fifth edition . Leatherbound. Very good. [16], x, 524 p. 20 cm. Frontisportrait of the author. Full leather, rebacked, and edges and corners repaired. Hinges repaired internally. Some spots to title page, portrait and portrait verso. Bookplate on front pastedown. Small tear in bottom of a front endpaper. Daniel Turner, born in London in 1667, deserves to be remembered for two reasons. Not only was he the author of the first book in the English language devoted wholly to dermatology, but he was also the recipient of the first degree of Doctor of Medicine conferred by the English colonies in North America. This, an honorary title, was obtained from Yale College in return for Turner's gift of books. First published in 1714, this book discusses the methods by which certain diseases erupt. In particular, he writes how contact with certain substances and imbalances in the body can lead to the development and display of diseases at the cutaneous or skin level. Note the bookplate for Thomas Stewart Traill (1781 – 1862) Scottish physician, chemist, mineralogist, meteorologist, zoologist and scholar of medical jurisprudence.

A Fine, virtually pristine copy, bright pages free of foxing and stains, clear print and ample margins, fresh gilt. In all, a highly attractive example of this seminal work of classical scholarship. Lowndes 213. Second Edition. Blackwell's reputation as a major figure of the Scottish Enlightenment rests chiefly on this pioneering study, first published anonymously in 1735. Blackwell believed that culture was learned, not inherent (a cornerstone of modern cultural anthropology), and that Homer's rank as a supreme epic poet "was the outcome of a specific historical context, social organization, geography, and climate, which combined to shape the culture he represented and which provided an ethos uniquely favourable to epic poetry. . . . A key point of the analysis was the idea of uneven development, an overlap between high civilization in the centres of Greek culture, with a continuat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed for D. Midwinter et al., London, 1736. [8], 375pp, [1]. With an engraved half-title and 93 engravings in the text. Bound by Charles Goodall of Leeds in early twentieth-century navy half-calf, buckram boards, tooled in gilt and blind. Rubbing to joints and edges, marking to boards, pen trials to recto and verso of engraved half-title, slight loss to lower corners of C2-3, browned throughout, occasional spots of dust-soiling. First printed in 1635, the aptly named Emblems, by English renaissance poet Francis Quarles (1592-1644), consists of divine and moral poetry, illustrated throughout with allegorical baroque designs, promoting the uncontroversial characteristics typically identified with good Christian living. The work, which proved the most successful Quarles produced, was dedicated to Edward Benlowes, who had provided inspiration in presenting the poet with copies of two highly esteemed seventeenth-century Jesuit continental emblem books; Pia Desideria (1624) and Typus Mundi (1627). Quarles produced a second poetic-emblem book, the Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man in 1638, and the two works were collected together in over 30 editions before 1800. ESTC T94282. Gersaint (Edmé François), 1694-1750
Paris, Flahault & Prault, 1736. The catalogue of an auction sale commenced on 30 January 1736, in which 450 lots of shells and 132 of Surinamese insects and reptiles were offered. To recruit connoisseurs to the collecting of marine naturalia, Gersaint prefaces the catalogue with "Observations sur les Coquillages", in which shells are elevated to the status of works of art, and described as a source of inspiration for architects, sculptors, and painters; with a "Liste des Principaux Cabinets"; and with a list of the authors who have described shells. At the head of the catalogue, is a still-life of shells and coral, designed by François Boucher, and engraved by Claude Duflos, which serves as a condensed illustration of the collection and its decorative potential, while identifying Gersaint as the source of Rococo chic. Bound with Catalogue raisonné d'une collection considérable de diverses Curiosités en tous Genres, contenues dans les Cabinets de feu Monsieur Bonnier de la Mosson. Paris, Jacques Barrois & Pierre-Guillaume Simon, 1744 The second work in this volume is Gersaint's catalogue of the collections gathered by Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (d. 26 July 1744), divided for sale in nine sections, comprising shells, insects, and animals stuffed or in preserving fluids; scientific instruments, pharmaceutical apparatus, and machinery; ornamental turning, bronzes, porcelain, clocks, and other works of art; pictures and prints; and furniture. Baroque pattern book and album
Vienna, 1736. Oblong folio (390 x 252 mm). 118 numbered ff. (but 115: ff. 96, 106, and 112 skipped). Calligraphic preface by Hörmannsperger, 58 full-page textile designs by the same, mostly in red, blue, green, and gilt (including one folded, double-page sized specimen and 4 ff. with 2 designs each), 7 splendid gouache washes raised in gilt and silver; bound in between these are a total of 52 engravings on 48 plates, all in splendid contemporary colour raised in gilt and silver. Contemp. marbled boards. Unique, museum-quality document of late Baroque craftsmanship among the urban Third Estate: apart from 58 meticulously executed textile designs, the album contains seven large-format gouaches showing the self-assured author practising his trade in his workshop, advertising and selling his wares to customers, as well as playing music and even bowling, but also attending the general meeting of the Viennese blanket makers. The engravings which Hörmannsperger inserted between his own works all show mundane subjects (dwarves, soldiers, caricatures, etc.): thus, his autograph textile designs and gouaches are interleaved with some of the rarest and most charming pieces produced by the 1720's Augsburg school of engraving. - The album is introduced by a self-portrait of the 26-year-old Hörmannsperger in his workshop (with his compass and one of the later-included textile designs lying on the table); on the opposite page he offers a brief preface to the volume: "for true art speaks for the master: here is a book, all mine, with many drawings, as they will be seen, all drawn by me, tho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Butler, Joseph
James, John and Paul Knapton, London, 1736. First edition, 4to. xii, 320pp complete. Finely bound in contemporary paneled calf, spine expertly renewed with morocco label. Bookplate of Lytton Strachey on front pastedown, beneath an earlier bookplate. Contents clean and unmarked, a remarkably fresh copy. 'Butler's was an empirical approach, similar to Hume's, but he held that philosophic scepticism should not entail religious scepticism. Assuming, as the deists were prepared to, that God is the author of nature, there are no contradictions, obscurities or improbabilities in religious doctrine different in kind from those encountered in science. Thus the religious order and the scientific order are similar in nature, and both show the working of the Supreme Creator' (PMM). Printing and the Mind of Man 193.
