De Morbis Cutaneis. A Treatise of Diseases Incident to the Skin. In Two Parts. With A short Appendix concerning the Efficacy of Local Remedies, and the Manner of their Operations

London: R. Wilkin et al, 1736. Fifth edition . Leatherbound. Very good. [16], x, 524 p. 20 cm. Frontisportrait of the author. Full leather, rebacked, and edges and corners repaired. Hinges repaired internally. Some spots to title page, portrait and portrait verso. Bookplate on front pastedown. Small tear in bottom of a front endpaper. Daniel Turner, born in London in 1667, deserves to be remembered for two reasons. Not only was he the author of the first book in the English language devoted wholly to dermatology, but he was also the recipient of the first degree of Doctor of Medicine conferred by the English colonies in North America. This, an honorary title, was obtained from Yale College in return for Turner's gift of books. First published in 1714, this book discusses the methods by which certain diseases erupt. In particular, he writes how contact with certain substances and imbalances in the body can lead to the development and display of diseases at the cutaneous or skin level. Note the bookplate for Thomas Stewart Traill (1781 – 1862) Scottish physician, chemist, mineralogist, meteorologist, zoologist and scholar of medical jurisprudence.

Paris, Flahault & Prault, 1736. The catalogue of an auction sale commenced on 30 January 1736, in which 450 lots of shells and 132 of Surinamese insects and reptiles were offered. To recruit connoisseurs to the collecting of marine naturalia, Gersaint prefaces the catalogue with "Observations sur les Coquillages", in which shells are elevated to the status of works of art, and described as a source of inspiration for architects, sculptors, and painters; with a "Liste des Principaux Cabinets"; and with a list of the authors who have described shells. At the head of the catalogue, is a still-life of shells and coral, designed by François Boucher, and engraved by Claude Duflos, which serves as a condensed illustration of the collection and its decorative potential, while identifying Gersaint as the source of Rococo chic. Paris, Jacques Barrois & Pierre-Guillaume Simon, 1744 The second work in this volume is Gersaint's catalogue of the collections gathered by Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (d. 26 July 1744), divided for sale in nine sections, comprising shells, insects, and animals stuffed or in preserving fluids; scientific instruments, pharmaceutical apparatus, and machinery; ornamental turning, bronzes, porcelain, clocks, and other works of art; pictures and prints; and furniture. This copy was bound for Jean-Claude Fauconnet de Vildé, Conseiller de la ville de Paris (d. circa 1765).Gersaint, Edmé François Paris 1694 - 1750 Paris Catalogue raisonné de coquilles, et autres curiosités naturelles . The author of this work was a merchant with a boutique on the Pont Notre-Dame in Paris, who from about 1732 began to promote the vogue for collecting shells (conchyliomania), dealing in them and amassing large collections. 3 In June 1734 Gersaint had organised an auction containing a 'Cabinet de Coquilles' imported from Holland, followed on 3 December by a sale of shells from collections in Holland, Flanders, and Paris (both auctions were held without printed catalogues). The Catalogue raisonné de coquilles et autres curiosités naturelles was printed for Gersaint's third sale of shells, his first grande vente publique, commenced on 30 January 1736, in which 450 lots of shells and 132 of Surinamese insects and reptiles were offered. According to a contemporary note in another copy, all these curiosities were the property of 'M. Guichard, militaire, et au sieur Gersaint son ami'. 4 To recruit connoisseurs to the collecting of marine naturalia, Gersaint prefaces the catalogue with 'Observations sur les Coquillages' (pp.1-29), in which shells are elevated to the status of works of art, and described as a source of inspiration for architects, sculptors, and painters; with a 'Liste des Principaux Cabinets' (pp.30-45); and with a list of the authors who have described shells (pp.46-61). His tactic seems to have worked: among buyers of shells in the sale were the aristocratic collectors Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville, Jean de Jullienne, Antoine de La Roque, and Louis Quentin de Lorangère, and two enthusiastic amateurs, Gaillard (purchaser of thirty-five lots, including four of insects) and Sévin (thirty-nine lots). The sale realised more than 6600 livres, with each shell selling on average for 15 livres (the top lot 67 'une grande huître extrêmement baroque et presque noire en dehors et en dedans' fetched 75 livres). 5 [img-2639-left-large_default] Left Engraving by Claude Duflos after a design by François Boucher The engraved title-frontispiece is a still-life of shells and coral, designed by François Boucher, and engraved by Claude Duflos. 6 'Placed at the head of the catalogue, the frontispiece provides a condensed illustration of the collection and its decorative potential, while identifying Gersaint as the source of Rococo chic'. 7 Boucher himself became a leading collector of shells (he purchased at least three lots of shells in Gersaint's auction of La Roque's collection in 1745) and his own catalogue contains a eulogy by the auctioneer, Gersaint's colleague Pierre Rémy, celebrating him as a man of taste. 8 The interconnections of collectors of shells, patrons, and designers of Rococo architecture and decoration, and their role in gaining acceptance of the Rococo as a style, deserve investigation. 9 [img-2638-left-large_default] Bound for Jean-Claude Fauconnet de Vildé. The second work in this volume is Gersaint's sale catalogue of the collections gathered by Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (6 September 1702-26 July 1744), divided for sale in nine sections, comprising shells, insects, and animals stuffed or in preserving fluids; scientific instruments, pharmaceutical apparatus, and machinery; ornamental turning, bronzes, porcelain, clocks, and other works of art; pictures and prints; and furniture. The 966 lots were removed from the owner's townhouse, the Hôtel de Lude, fabulously decorated by Jacques de Lajoue, with painted depictions of the cabinets, and were offered in March and April 1745 (furniture and objects 'de moindre conséquence' had been sold in December 1744 and January 1745 without a catalogue). 10 One of the highest prices in the sale (1100 livres) was paid by Madame de Pompadour for a pot-pourri in porcelain which Bonnier de la Mosson had acquired from the prince de Condé. 11 George-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon, bought many shells and insects (thirty-one lots and twenty-eight lots respectively); other persistent buyers were Michel-Ferdinand d'Albert d'Ailly, duc de Chaulnes; Crozat de Thiers; Crozat de Tugny; Carl-Gustav Tessin; the amateurs Dupin, Foissac, Hénin; and the dealer Joseph-Gabriel Agard. Gersaint himself purchased fifty-four lots, including a marble table with a sculpted base (lot 939: 1060 livres) and a unicorn's horn (lot 369: 72 livres), for a total of 7813 livres. 12 Some copies of the catalogue are illustrated by the Boucher-Duflos frontispiece for the Catalogue raisonné de coquilles of 1736, with its text appropriately modified. references Leopoldo Cicognara, Catalogo ragionato dei libri d'arte e d'antichità posseduti dal conte Cicognara (Pisa 1821), no. 4406; Universal Catalogue of Books on Art (London 1870), p.661 (Bodleian Library copy); Jacob Lewine, Bibliography of eighteenth century art and illustrated books, being a guide to collectors of illustrated works in English and French of the period (London 1898), p.95 (erroneously dated 1754); Henri Cohen, Guide de l'Amateur de Livres à Gravures duxviii e siècle, revised by Seymour de Ricci (Paris 1912), no. 206; The Lessing J.         The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and Course of Nature. To which are added two brief dissertations: I. Of personal identity. II. Of the nature of virtue.

James, John and Paul Knapton, London 1736 - First edition, 4to. xii, 320pp complete. Finely bound in contemporary paneled calf, spine expertly renewed with morocco label. Bookplate of Lytton Strachey on front pastedown, beneath an earlier bookplate. Contents clean and unmarked, a remarkably fresh copy. 'Butler's was an empirical approach, similar to Hume's, but he held that philosophic scepticism should not entail religious scepticism. Assuming, as the deists were prepared to, that God is the author of nature, there are no contradictions, obscurities or improbabilities in religious doctrine different in kind from those encountered in science. Thus the religious order and the scientific order are similar in nature, and both show the working of the Supreme Creator' (PMM). Printing and the Mind of Man 193.

By Hend.

Principatus Silesiae Bregensis exactissima Tabula Geographica.

Artist: Homann Erben RJ & Julien; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca 1736 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 55 x 80; - description: Map shows the former duchy of Brieg in Silesia with the city Brzeg, Strehlen (Strzelin), Nimptsch (Niemcza), Nambslau (Namyslow), Pitschen (Byczyna), Creutzburg (Kluczbork) and Breslau.; -vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Iemand laadt flessen in draagmanden. Prijs: ?2.650,- (incl. lijst).

        The Sound Believer

Printed by J. Draper for D. Henchman,, Boston: 1736 - 12mo period blind ruled sheep with early primitive rebacking in sheep, [2], ii, 281 pp. Some overall wear and tear to leather, and binding is a bit bent. Lacks rear free endpaper, and pages are browned with occasional pale dampstains. Also, first few leaves are a little brittle, and a few chips to the edges of a couple of pages. Title page trimmed at the top just touching outer rule. Signature on front endpaper, and small wormhole at the lower corner in about 15 leaves not affecting text. Despite these faults, it is still a very good and sturdy copy. This is the first American edition of an important Puritanical text. Thomas Shepard (1605-1649) was born in Towcester England, and went to Emmanuel Collage in Cambridge to get his degree in religion. Shepard had strong Calvinist views, and it didn't seem to take him long to get into trouble with the established church. He was silenced by the Bishop of London for non-conformity, and escaped to Boston in 1735. He became the pastor of church at Newton (Cambridge), and seemed to have a keen interest in the education of young people. In fact, he is credited with establishing the tradition of scholarships in America. He proposed a plan to the 'Commission of the United Colonies" that each family contribute part of their crops to help support needy students. DAB Vol. IX. Evans 4077. Sabin 80249.         The History of the World

London - G Conyers, J J and P Knapton et al., 1736 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. Sir Walter Ralegh's famous and majorhistorical work. The History of the World was written during Sir Walter Ralegh's time imprisoned in the Tower of London. This work was different to Ralegh's prior writings, which were intended for private circulation. With The History Ralegh wanted to reach a wider audience. Initial copies of the work were suppressed by the archbishop of Canterbury and were seized by the king's agents due to its contempt to which Raleigh held monarchs throughout history. Three years later the suppression order was lifted and it had a 1617 reprint. Withsix double-page maps, two double page plansand several vignettes. The eleventh edition of this work 'printed from a copy revis'd by Himself. 'Collated using ESTC and ECCO: complete. Very bright and relatively clean pages given the age of this work. With a large chronological table to the rear. This work gives a history of the world from the creation of the world to 146bc, the time of the second Macedonian war. The first two books narrate and analyse biblical history with the last three books focusing on Greece and Rome. Ralegh focuses on philosophical problems found through the concepts of foreknowledge, free will and kismet . The later books of his work focus more on the acts of man than God in thedevelopment of the world. Sir Walter Ralegh was an Englishgentleman, writer, poet, soldier, courier, spy and explorer. Herose rapidly in favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. He was an important figure in the colonisation of North America. He secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of Elizabeth I'sladies-in-waiting without the Queen'spermission. For this he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. Following Elizabeth I's death he was once again imprisoned in the Tower for plotting against King James I. It was during this time that he wrote this work. This is a scarce edition of this work and the textblock is in a bright and lovely condition. Condition: In full morocco bindings with cloth covered boards. Bindings are library bindings with shelf number gilt stamped to tail of spines. To front boards 'Public Library Hastings' gilt stamps have been scored off. Otherwise, externally, excellent with minor rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spines. Library shelf numbers written to the verso oftitle pages in ink. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with a few handling marks to margins. Light spotting to the first and last few pages. Occasional spots. Appointed by Felipe III oidor in the Audiencia of Lima in 1609, the doctor in laws Juan de Solorzano dedicated a good part of his time there to fulfill the commission of to attend and write everything that judges concerning, and convenient to his right, and government. The result of his effort were two volumes in Latin, 'Disputatio de Indiarum Iure sive de iusta Indiarum Occidentalium inquisitione, acquisitione et retentione, tribus libris comprehensa and Tomus alter de Indiarum Iure sive de iusta Indiarum Occidentalium gubernatione, quinque libris comprehensus', that were published in Madrid in 1629 and 1639 respectively. In them, after a description of the discovery, conquest and retention of the West Indies, he offered an analysis of both the institutions of government which had been generated and the functioning of the whole administration civil, economic and religious and the laws specific laws, laws of Castile and the customary aboriginal right that justified it. «It was then made clear to me that it would be of the pleasure and service of Your Majesty that these books be put into the Spanish language so that those who do not understand the Latin may enjoy them; and the same have been asked me by letter many Indies people well warned».Thus, Solorzano undertook a version in Castilian, less detailed (although he maintained the Latin in the appointments) and with more updated data, that was published in Madrid, in 1648, in a single volume, but of 1200 pages: the 'Política Indiana'. Whether it was in Latin or in Spanish, Solorzano s objective was to justify the ownership of the territory by the Crown of Castile and enter into the existing dispute over the treatment given by the Spaniards to the Indians, both to defend the dignity as people of the Indians (he followed Francisco de Vitoria and Jose de Acosta) and its strict defense against the abuses in the courts, and to defend the good management developed by the Spanish crown. Although in 1680 a compilation of the laws for Indies, which affected the legal basis of the 'Politica Indiana', was published ('Recopilación de las leyes de Indias'), the demand for copies seemed sufficient for the brothers Verdussen to reprint it unchanged at Antwerp in 1703, compressing their types to reduce the volume to 600 pages. It was not until the 1720s that the rapporteur of the Consejo de Indias (Council of the Indies), Francisco Ramiro de Valenzuela, undertook the work of legally updating Solorzano s work, requesting and obtaining a printing license in 1730 for 'Adiciones sobre la Política Indiana' (Additions on Indian Politics). Such additions were never published as it, and instead, in 1736 and 1739, the two volumes of a new edition of the Solorzano s 'Política Indiana' appeared with the additions due to Ramiro de Valenzuela bellowing in each chapter the text of Solorzano in numbered paragraphs preceded by an asterisk. This last enlarged edition we offer, would be reprinted unchanged, in 1776, in Madrid, in the Imprenta de la Gazeta Real."

Small 8vo, 175, [1(instructions to binder)] pp. Double-page frontispiece containing two images; folding cosmic diagram; and two plates, all hand-colored copperplate engravings; the diagram & plates tipped onto the fore-edges of text leaves. Title-page printed in red & black. Contemporary brown & white marbled boards, paper backstrip label, in modern beige buckram folding box with paper backstrip label. Covers well worn; some minor internal staining and neat annotation; small ballpoint arrow on title-page indicating date '1696'; name of the author of the foreword on p. [2]; overall a sound copy of this important mystical text with astonishing illustrations. Second Edition; the work was evidently compiled in 1696 and first published in Leiden in 1723. Later editions were issued in 1779 & 1850; and the book may well be in print today. This edition is most uncommon, with OCLC locating it only at Duke and the Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek in Gottingen. Johann Georg Gichtel (1638-1710) was a theologian and attorney who embraced mysticism and the teachings of the inspirational Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), whose works he edited in 1682-1683. Gichtel wound up leading a life of ecstatic poverty in Amsterdam as head of a small cult known as Gichtelians or Brethren of the Angel. Their goal, and the thrust of this complex hermetic-mystical treatise, is the understanding of Divine Wisdom through self-knowledge and through freedom from all carnal desires. The four human images in the frontispiece and plates depict the evolution of humankind from the spirit by means of an inward spiraling of energies through the planets, although the iconography is much more complex than that. The large cosmic diagram seems to combine elements of astrology and spiritualism. These images were evidently based on visions of Gichtel's and may have been prepared by Graber, whose role in this publication is uncertain. The book was probably edited by Johann Wilhelm Überfeld (whose name is written in on p. [2]) (1659-1731), a follower of Gichtel who in 1730 published an edition of Gichtel's edition of Böhme's writings that is now regarded as standard. The first edition has appeared 3 times at auction since 1975, this edition only once; no copy is noted online although copies of the 1st and 4th editions are there as of 9/07.

London: [s.n.], M.DCC.XXXVI [1736]. 8vo: [4],346,[82], with folding copper-engraved map of the Mediterranean world, frontispiece portrait of Homer, title-page vignette and 12 further half-page plates and tailpieces (one beginning and ending each section), engraved by Van der Gucht, all in excellent impressions. A Fine, virtually pristine copy, bright pages free of foxing and stains, clear print and ample margins, fresh gilt. In all, a highly attractive example of this seminal work of classical scholarship. Lowndes 213. Second Edition. Blackwell's reputation as a major figure of the Scottish Enlightenment rests chiefly on this pioneering study, first published anonymously in 1735. Blackwell believed that culture was learned, not inherent (a cornerstone of modern cultural anthropology), and that Homer's rank as a supreme epic poet "was the outcome of a specific historical context, social organization, geography, and climate, which combined to shape the culture he represented and which provided an ethos uniquely favourable to epic poetry. . . . A key point of the analysis was the idea of uneven development, an overlap between high civilization in the centres of Greek culture, with a continuation of relative barbarism and its attendant heroic values elsewhere. . . . In the early stages of society language was naturally bold and metaphorical, so that utterance had a rude and energetic quality which it later lost. . . . Homer was peculiarly favoured by circumstance, since he had appeared at the beginning of [this] new cultural phase, but still had personal experience of the old heroic ethos." (ODNB) Withal, Lowndes was unimpressed: "A production that displays more erudition than genius, and more affectation than elegance." Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Paris, widow Desaint, 1781. 4to. With a woodcut vignette on the title-page. Contemporary cat's paw calf, gold-tooled spine.

Buchwald & Josefowicz, The zodiac of Paris, pp. 43-62; Edelstein, The terror of natural right, pp. 243-244; Poggendorff I, p. 630; Wellcome II, p. 503. First separate edition of an erudite treatise on the astronomical foundations of religion and mythology. In the late 18th century, the notion of a common origin of all religions had become popular among French Enlightenment radicals, thereby challenging the Church's claim to absolute truth and moving as close as possible to atheism. Basing himself on the work of the astronomer Bailly (1736-1793), Dupuis investigated the origin of the constellations of the zodiac in relation to their given names. Since the constellations do not in any way represent the figure after which they are named, Dupuis concluded that they must have been older than their Greek names would suggest. The signs must have had some sort of connection with the state of the earth and agricultural labour, working as a calendar, and Dupuis ultimately found his original civilization in Upper Egypt, 15 to 16 thousand years ago. On this basis, Dupuis founded his thesis that all religions derived from the Egyptian zodiac and that all gods in various mythologies, including the Christian God, were allegories of the sun. After publication, the theory was refuted by Bailly, although he praised Dupuis's erudition and ingenuity. Nevertheless, the theory proved popular with radical revolutionaries.Binding somewhat worn, notably the hinges and back board. With some spots and a small hole in the gutter margin of pp. 187-188; a very good copy.

Paris, A. Nepveu (vols. 1-4 printed by Demonville, vols. 5-6 by Le Normant), 1811-1812. 6 volumes bound as 2. 18mo (14 x 9 cm). With 4 engraved frontispieces and 104 other engraved plates (8 folding), all finely coloured by a contemporary hand. Contemporary richly gold-tooled dark green grained morocco, gold-tooled spine, boards, board edges and turn-ins, gilt edges, with the name of the binder on spine: R.P. CHILLIAT.

      - Brunet I, col. 1225; Colas 443; Cordier, Sinica, cols. 64-65; cf. Abbey, Travel 535; Reed & Dematté 14; for the binder; Bibl. Henri Beraldi III, 374; Flety, p. 44. A rare complete set of Breton's lively description of China during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (ruled 1736-1795), with 108 beautifully coloured illustration plates. The first four volumes were originally published alone in 1811 and the last two volumes added as a supplement in 1812. The images cover the whole range of Chinese society. They show military, ceremonial and traditional costumes, weaponry, means of transport, arts and crafts, implements, toys and other objects of everyday life, but also means of punishment and execution. The majority of the plates were based on original drawings in the private collection of the French Secretary of State Henri Léonard Jean Baptiste Bertin (1719-1792). Although the original artists are not named, most look like the work of the Englishmen George Henry Mason and William Alexander. Alexander accompanied Lord Macartney's 1792-1794 embassy to China as a junior draughtsman. All 108 plates in our set are beautifully coloured by a master craftsman with an eye for detail, truly contributing to the value of the set.In an attractive contemporary binding by the Parisian binder R.P. Chilliat. Beraldi lists and illustrates a Chilliat binding with the arms of Napoleon Bonaparte, that includes many of the same tools on the boards. With bookplate. Some very minor browning on along the top edges, some occasional spots, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding slightly rubbed along the spine, but otherwise also very good.
