        Del Paradiso perduto Poema inglese.

Londra, Presso Carlo Bennet, 1736. - Folio, pp. [2], iv, [24], 397 (recte 399), [1, blank], 4, with three fine portraits, of Milton, Frederick Prince of Wales, and Rolli, the last two mezzotints; woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials; a very good copy in contemporary quarter reversed calf and marbled boards, black morocco label.First edition of the first complete Italian translation of Milton's Paradise Lost, the second issue, with a cancel title-page dated 1736 and further enumerating Rolli's academic titles. Rolli started to work on this translation in 1719, publishing the first six books in London in 1729. Still incomplete, Rolli's work was placed on the Index librorum prohibitorum in January 1732. The complete translation was finally published in 1735 by Charles Bennet ('Despite the change in imprint to Charles Bennet, Samuel Aris [who had printed the first six books] probably printed the entire poem, for his signed ornaments appear on sheets throughout the work', Coleridge, p.207), and then often reprinted throughout the eighteenth century. In a letter of November 1734 Rolli himself described the circumstances of this edition: 'I am preparing the edition of Paradise Lost, the last six books are already printed, and many sheets of the first part reprinted, wherever it was necessary to refine or make changes; a few pages of variants will also be added. The merciful Prince of Wales, devoted to literature, who is now reading Orlando Furioso with me, favours me so much that I consider myself very lucky. He has incited me to finish my work, which I had neglected; I did not want to start a subscription, which is nowadays considered as outright begging, and he gave me one hundred pounds for the publication' (BCEM, Autografi Campori, Rolli, our translation). Paolo Antonio Rolli (1687-1765) lived in London from 1715 to 1744. There 'he was well known and liked in musical and literary circles as a poet, librettist, translator and editor [.] He had already established a literary reputation in Italy, when he had been invited back to London by Thomas Herbert, eighth earl of Pembroke [ ] to serve in his household as an Italian teacher' (Taylor, Foreign-language printing in London 1500-1900, p. 159). He later became preceptor to the Prince of Wales and the Royal Princesses.Coleridge, Milton, 161c; Wickenheiser 635. Language: Italian

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur-Dresden 1813). Porträt des Kaufmanns Basse. Rad.

      - Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur-Dresden 1813). Porträt des Kaufmanns Basse. Radierung auf Papier. -- Technik: -- Radierung auf Papier. unten links in der Platte signiert: "A. Graff fec. ". -- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Anton Graff (1736-1813). Auf dem Lande. Kreide, minimal weiß gehöht

      - Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur-Dresden 1813). Auf dem Lande. Kreide, minimal weiß gehöht, auf braunem Papier. -- Beschreibung: -- Kreide, minimal weiß gehöht, auf braunem Papier. verso bezeichne: "Anton Graff" und nummeriert: "65". Sammlung A. O. Meyer -- Größe/Size: -- 22,1 x 24,9 cm. -- Zustand: -- Guter Zustand, ganz leichter Mittelknick. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Memorie della vita Giusto Fontanini, Venezia, 1755

Fontanini Giusto, 1666-1736 - Memorie della vita Giusto Fontanini, Venezia, 1755. Appresso Pietro Valvasense, 4°, 30x20 cm., original vellum binding, 227 pp., little waterstained, small wormhole. To read the complete book, please klick the below link.

[N.p.]: Auf vieler Verlangen aufs neue dem Druck übergeben..., 1736 Small 8vo, contemporary brown & white marbled boards, paper backstrip label, in modern beige buckram folding box with paper backstrip label. 175, [1(instructions to binder)] pp. Double-page frontispiece containing two images; folding cosmic diagram; and two plates, all hand-colored copperplate engravings; the diagram & plates tipped onto the fore-edges of text leaves. Title-page printed in red & black. Covers well worn; some minor internal staining and neat annotation; small ballpoint arrow on title-page indicating date '1696'; name of the author of the foreword on p. [2]; overall a sound copy of this important mystical text with astonishing illustrations. Second Edition; the work was evidently compiled in 1696 and first published in Leiden in 1723. Later editions were issued in 1779 & 1850; and the book may well be in print today. This edition is most uncommon, with OCLC locating it only at Duke and the Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek in Gottingen. Johann Georg Gichtel (1638-1710) was a theologian and attorney who embraced mysticism and the teachings of the inspirational Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), whose works he edited in 1682-1683. Gichtel wound up leading a life of ecstatic poverty in Amsterdam as head of a small cult known as Gichtelians or Brethren of the Angel. Their goal, and the thrust of this complex hermetic-mystical treatise, is the understanding of Divine Wisdom through self-knowledge and through freedom from all carnal desires. The four human images in the frontispiece and plates depict the evolution of humankind from the spirit by means of an inward spiraling of energies through the planets, although the iconography is much more complex than that. The large cosmic diagram seems to combine elements of astrology and spiritualism. These images were evidently based on visions of Gichtel's and may have been prepared by Graber, whose role in this publication is uncertain. The book was probably edited by Johann Wilhelm Überfeld (whose name is written in on p. [2]) (1659-1731), a follower of Gichtel who in 1730 published an edition of Gichtel's edition of Böhme's writings that is now regarded as standard. The first edition has appeared 3 times at auction since 1975, this edition only once; no copy is noted online although copies of the 1st and 4th editions are there as of 9/07.

Some titles are without place or address Neaulme Rare meeting of different parts in uniform binding Different parts seem to have appeared simultaneously in Paris and Holland..; so there was a Parisian original edition, and Dutch. Our copy combines the two runs. Binders in full sheepskin blonde then. Back smooth decorated with parts of title and volume number of red morocco, flower boxes and small golden chains, golden lace bird tail. All edges gilt. Eight bumped corners and a few tiny scuffs. Marginal tear without lack on page 23 of Part IX. Unfinished Marivaux, like his other novel, Le Paysan parvenu, but probably for the incompletion by its very nature, Marianne is one of the first novels published in serial. Marivaux almost abandon the company several times, although the success of the novel was considerable. Emblematic work of the eighteenth, the book borrows from all genres in vogue: novel of manners, learning novel, picaresque and adventure. Marianne, Countess, y tale by letters adventure of his life, or how, received nothing, she will climb the social ladder. It is also known as Marivaux had to stop at the eighth game, but for editorial reasons, he wrote other stories to give away. Only the twelfth part is not Marivaux.

Liberty. A Poem [Comprising: Antient and Modern Italy Compared; Greece; Rome; Britain; The Prospect]

London: A. Millar, 1736. First edition, regular paper issue with prices printed on title-leaves. viii, 37, [3]; [6], [9]-42; [4], [9]-48; 63, [1]; 38, [2] pp. 4to. Contemporary quarter vellum and marbled boards, spine titled in ink, uncut. Spine defective, front cover loose, ffep detached, first part browned, scattered foxing throughout. First edition, regular paper issue with prices printed on title-leaves. viii, 37, [3]; [6], [9]-42; [4], [9]-48; 63, [1]; 38, [2] pp. 4to. Presented by Thomas Hollis to Jonathan Mayhew. A complete gathering of James Thomson's 5-part poem on the theme of liberty in the modern and ancient world. "This whiggish historical narrative traces the rise and fall of liberty in ancient Greece and Rome and in modern Europe until its perfection in England at the revolution of 1688. The poem ends, however, as it had begun, among the ruins of Rome, with an implicit warning that luxury and political corruption might ruin even Britain" (ODNB). This copy presented from the Whig propagandist Thomas Hollis (1720-74) to his American friend, Boston Congregationalist minister Jonathan Mayhew (1720-66), with an inscription on the first half-title, "Jonathan Mayhew's, the Gift of Thomas Hollis, Esq., F.R.S. 1760." Both men were active proponents of liberty - Hollis distributed his reprints of republican literature in elegant bindings adorned with emblematic libertarian tools; Mayhew was a leading opponent of the Stamp Act and campaigned for religious and political freedom in the colonies. It is interesting to note that it was Hollis who met with Prime Minister Rockingham in 1765 to convey the American colonists' objection to the Stamp Act (Bond, Thomas Hollis of Lincoln's Inn, p. 27). Hollis later gave to Harvard an emblematic binding containing sermons by Andrew Eliot and Jonathan Mayhew regarding the passage and repeal of the Stamp Act. Hollis published a portrait of Mayhew as part of his "liberty-print" series, and in 1760, the year of this gift of Thomson's poems, Hollis convinced the publisher Andrew Millar to reprint two sermons by Mayhew on the taking of Quebec. The correspondance between Hollis and Mayhew is preserved at the Massachusetts Historical Society (cf. Knollenberg, Thomas Hollis and Jonathan Mayhew Their Correspondence, 1759-1766, Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Third Series, Vol. 69 (Oct., 1947 - May, 1950), pp. 102-193). The correspondence makes clear that Hollis was in the habit of sending Mayhew parcels of books, for his own reading and to be distributed among friends or given to Harvard. The present gift was likely among a box of books sent in the summer of 1760. Hollis also had some acquaintance with Thomson; Millar, asked Hollis' help in designing a frontispiece to a collected edition of his works as well as help in composing and designing a memorial inscription to Thomson (cf. Bond, p. 107). An intriguing association. With: [GREEN, Joseph, attributed to.] An Eclogue sacred to the Memory of the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Mayhew, who departed this Life July 9th, Anno Salutis Humanae 1766. 18 pp., including fragment of final ad leaf. 4to. Boston: Thomas and John Fleet, [1766]. First edition. Disbound, text foxed and stained, top portion of first two leaves excised (with loss of "An" from title). Evans 10325. And with 3 pp. of notes in an unknown hand, ca. 1765, on the printing of an edition of Locke's Letters Concerning Toleration by Millar with the assistance of Hollis. Foxon T186, T191, T194, T196, T198; Rothschild 2425 (first part only)

Arabian Nights. Entertainments Consisting of One Thousand and One Stories Told by the Sultaness of the Indies, to Divert the Sultan from the Execution of a Bloody Vow [...]. Translated into French from the Arabian MSS., by Mr. Galland, of the Royal Academy; and now done into English from the last Paris Edition. The Seventh Edition.

London, G. Buckeridge, 1736.. Folio (195 x 303 mm). 3 parts in one vol.; incomplete. (139)-148, 153-293, (1) pp. 320 pp. 250 pp. Contemp. English calf; spine silt with giltstamped red label.. Undocumented, early edition (here counted as "the seventh"), printed and published by G. Buckeridge of Baldwin's Gardens, Holborn. Galland's liberal but highly influential French translation, adapted to Parisian tastes, was published in 12 volumes between 1704 and 1717. "Even before the last of Galland's volumes had been published in France, some of his stories had been translated into English and were circulating as cheap chap-books on the popular market" (R. Irwin, The Arabian Nights: A Companion, p. 19). This is one of the several early English editions, all very rare: indeed, no other copy of this one, printed more than a century before Edward Lane's translation, is recorded by OCLC. It is also uncommon for being generously printed in two columns in the folio format, rather than as the usual duocdecimo set. "Galland's translation [...] was quickly translated into English and German. It enjoyed a most remarkable success throughout Europe, perceptible even in children's literature, and contributed significantly to the new image which enlightened Europeans entertained of the Islamic East: after Galland, this was no longer the home of the Antichrist and of accursed heresy, but rather the ever-constant Orient beneath an eternally fair sky, boasting splendid colours and unheard-of wealth, Caliphs, Viziers, and Kadis, harems, fairy-tale princes, fairies and genies, sorcerers and sages, a world of fantastic adventure and outrageous incidents" (cf. Fück, p. 101). - Begins with the 66th Night, bound thus in the 18th century, lacking the first and much of the second book ("volume") of the first part. Upper hinge repaired; wants pp. 1-138 and pp. 149-152 of the first part; first leaf severely damaged with loss (remargined); slighter loss to lower edge of final leaf. From the library of the Rev. Lyndhurst Burton Towne of Harlow (his bookplate to pastedown). - Cf. Chauvin IV, 185 D (the 4th ed., in-12mo). OCLC 731574131 (1736: the 8th ed.; in-12mo).

The Life of William Bedell, D.D. Bishop of Kilmore in Ireland [bound with] An Abstract of the Number of Protestant and Popish Families in the Several Counties and Provinces of Ireland

Dublin 1736 - Two books cut and bound together in a modern plain cloth cover, somewhat stained and worn. The words "Life of Bp. Bedell" are blocked in gilt on the spine. The page edges have been guillotined and stained red. This cutting has resulted in two losses: the date of publication has been cut from the bottom of the title page of Bishop Bedell (and has been written in ink above), and some contemporary annotation in the margins is partially excised. The text is unaffected and all pages are in otherwise excellent condition. There is little foxing, mainly confined to the outermost leaves of the two works. A few faint damp stains are also evident. The binding has plain purple endpapers, with an ownership signature at the front. The ESTC citations of the two books are T115041 (Bishop Bedell) and T18178 (Abstract of protestant and Popish Families) and bibliographic details accord fully. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
