Highly interesting collection of five 17th-century print series (one a set of plates for an illustrated book) all in the field of art, drawing and ornamentation. They seem likely to have been printed together sometime around or soon after 1688.Ad 1: A beautiful print series intended as plates for a manual to learn the art of drawing and painting, ranging from images of the human body to battle fields, by the famous French artist Abraham Bosse (1602-1676). In the event the plates were published on their own and the makeup varies from set to set. Ad 2: A numbered series of 30 engravings of ornamentation that could be used in sculptural, architectural, art and book illustration, including putti, grotesque masks, garlands, etc. Paolo Farinati (1524-1606) worked mostly in his native city of Verona. Ad 3: A series of 4 prints showing artists at work, intended to illustrate art technique. Two are devoted to drawing and the other two are devoted to painting. These prints are often considered part of the larger series described here separately as ad 1.Ad 4: A beautiful series of 4 prints representing the four elements in the form of two male and two female figures, elegantly dressed, with various items related to the relevant element. Blum tentatively dates the series to 1630, making it one of Bosse's earliest mature works.Ad 5: A complete set of the plates made to illustrate the first and only edition of Pierre Bullet's work on surveying (Paris, 1688). With a few plates (primarily in ad 2) spotted, but otherwise a good copy. The binding is somewhat worn and the front hinge cracked.

Two engraved plates & numerous woodcut illus. in the text. 150 pp., [2] pp. of publisher's ads. 8vo, cont. calf (small defect to foot of spine), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: C.A. Jombert, 1736. About the sixth edition, "corrigée & augmentée," of this noteworthy and popular book on the sector which went through numerous editions until 1794. The engraved plates depict a sector by Chapotot, one of the most important instrument makers of the time who supplied instruments to Cassini and La Hire. The compass of proportion, developed by Galileo, Galgemair, and others, was a general purpose mechanical calculator capable of solving any practical mathematical problem that was likely to arise. The proportional compass, widely used in the 17th century, was of similar importance as the electronic calculator is to today's society. A lovely copy. ❧ D.S.B., X, pp. 263-65. Tomash O72-"This edition is identical to the first with the exception that someone has modified the sector to include the scales needed to solve the artillery caliber problem." .

Madrid, 1736. Folio. Modern morocco, spine and boards finely gilt, leather label. Titlepage printed in red and black, with engraved allegorical vignette. Light foxing to edges only. Internally fresh and clean. A fine copy. The first edition of this important economic work printed for the Spanish government, limited to 200 copies under instructions of the King. The volume is an essential study of the commercial relations between the Philippines, New Spain, and Spain, and is divided into ten chronological periods from the European discovery of the islands until 1722. The author's justification for the conservation and commerce of the Philippines appears on f.3-15, and a brief by Juan Grau y Monfalcòn, Procurador General of the Philippines, concerning Manila, the islands, and commerce with New Spain is included on f.215-64. Written in 1637, an extract of this latter document appeared in Thevenot's 1696 RELATIONS DE DIVERS VOYAGES CURIEUX. Alvarez de Abreu, an experienced administrator who held the position of Alcalde Visitador del Commercio entre Castilla y la Indias, was also the author of VICTIMA REAL LEGAL, DISCURSO UNICO JURIDICO- HISTORICO-POLITICO, an influential treatise on ecclesiastical benefices and Catholic church finances in Spanish America. A fine copy of an essential work on commerce between significant points of the Spanish empire. The author writes that 100 copies of the text were printed, but Medina confirms 200 copies.

Sampaloc, [Philippines], 1736. Small quarto. Modern mottled calf, ornately gilt, by Palomino. First few leaves brittle with slight cracking and minor loss, else in excellent condition. Very good. In a half morocco box. A remarkable survival of early Philippine printing, the extremely rare first book printed in Sampaloc (at that time a separate village but now in central Manila) and the second edition of the first grammar of the Panpanga language of Bataan and Bulacan in Manila Bay. Panpanga bears similarities to Tagalog (which is the subject of most early Philippine linguistic works) but with more Malay and Sanskrit words. The work was first printed in Manila at the Jesuit Press in 1729. The compiler, Diego Bergaño (1690-1747), was the Augustinian Provincial for the Philippines and Prior of the Convent at Bacolor. Printing started in the Philippines remarkably early, in 1593 (the unique example of the founding imprint is in the Rosenwald Collection at the Library of Congress), and was conducted by presses run by the different religious orders. Because of the climate and limited press runs, early imprints are notoriously rare, and generally in very poor condition when found. This is especially true of works printed on rice paper, as this is. A number of imprints recorded by Medina are known from references only, with no surviving copies. In the case of this work, only four copies are noted in OCLC, three in England and one in Germany. Medina based his entry on the copy in the British Library. An important early imprint and linguistic work, in remarkable condition for a work of its origin.

Manuscript, unbound. Transcript of a collection of letters in Hebrew of Rabbi Samson ben Joshua Moses Morpurgo. Rabbi of Ancona (1681-1740) [It would appear that our transcript was a copy retained by Morpurgo for his own records.] 46 leaves, 91 pages of text.

[1715-1736], Ancona, Italy - Petit Italki Handwriting. ff.40 (lacking f.14), (6). Sepia ink on coarse paper. Wormed, text slightly affected. Loose. Morpurgo was born in Gradisca d'Isonzo, moved at a young age to neighboring Gorizia, where he studied under R. Jacob Chai Gentilli, and at age 13 arrived in Venice, where he studied in the yeshivah of R. Samuel Aboab, a consummate Talmudist. In 1700, at age 19, he received a medical degree from the University of Padua. He was ordained as a Rabbi by R. Judah Briel of Mantua (1709). Upon the death of his father-in-law R. Joseph Fiametta (Lehavah) in 1721, Morpurgo succeeded him as Rabbi of Ancona, a position he held until his death. In Ancona, Morpurgo also practiced medicine, which won him the respect and admiration of the entire community, Jewish and Christian. As recognition of his distinguished service during the influenza epidemic of 1730, Cardinal Lambertini publicly presented him with a testimonial document. After Morpurgo's passing, his son Moses Chaim issued a collection of his halachic response under the title Shemesh Tzedakah (Venice, 1743). The present collection of letters allows us to see the Rabbi of Ancona in his many different facets: communal leader, halachic decisor, and man of the world. Much of the correspondence is between Morpurgo and Moses Hagiz, a native of Jerusalem who arrived on the European scene - dwelling at various times in Venice, Amsterdam, London, Emden and Hamburg - and acquired a name for himself as a self-appointed vigilante, forever on guard against the latest irruption of Sabbatian heresy. Some of our letters from Morpurgo to Hagiz are in (partial) defense of Moses Chaim Luzzatto (Ramcha"l) of Padua. Though respectful of the man he dubs "kana'i ben kana'i" (zealot son of a zealot"), Morpurgo conveys that he feels Hagiz is overdoing it. He questions why, for instance, Luzzatto's writings must be consigned to flames. (See f.42r.). Other letters to Hagiz are not readily contextualized, for example, it seems Hagiz had requested Morpurgo to forward to him a comprehensive history of the Muscovite or Russian monarchy, to which request Morpurgo acceded (ff.7r.-8r., 10v.). See JE, Volume IX, page 30; EJ, Volume XII, columns 350-351; Simon Ginzburg, Ramha"l u-B¿nei Doro: Osef Igroth u-Teudoth (1937); Mordechai Chriqui ed., Igroth Ramcha"l u-B'nei Doro (2001); Elisheva Carlebach The Pursuit of Heresy: Rabbi Moses Hagiz and the Sabbatian Controversies (1990); Meir Benayahu, "Books Composed and Books Edited by Rabbi Moses Hagiz" [Hebrew], Alei Sefer, V (April 1978), pages 104-115; M. Chriqui, Rabbi Moché Hayim Luzzatto [French] (1990).,Below are précised samples of selected letters. f,1- Letter to Morpurgo from Moses ben Jacob Hagiz, datelined "Emden, Friday, Rosh Chodesh Teveth, 1715." Hagiz has recently departed from London, where his anti-Sabbatian agitation resulted in the publication of the works Ha-Tzad Nachash by R. Joseph Ergas and Esh Dath by R. David Nieto. Hagiz has sent copies of the works to Morpurgo with a Mr. Recanati of Livorno. Hagiz fulminates against Sabbatian heresiarchs Nechemiah Chiya Hayon and Abrahm Cardozo. ff.1v.-2r. - Morpurgo to Hagiz. Reports deaths of Morpurgo's eldest son, father and wife (1716). Morpurgo replies to Hagiz that he never received the works forwarded care of Recanati. He suggests that perhaps the books were left behind in London. Discusses Hagiz's proposed publication of a new edition of the Mishnah. The letter was published by M. Benayahu from Ms. Kaufmann [Budapest] 245. One of the honorifics that Morpurgo bestows upon Hagiz has been incorrectly transcribed there "u-be-meimei ha-torah ve-ha-te'udah 'over mei amarim (!)" Benyahu, page 108. The final word should read "afasim" as in our version. This is but one example of the many variants. In the Kaufmann Ms. The letter is signed and datelined ¿Ancona, 25 Adar 1716. The complete translation was finally published in 1735 by Charles Bennet ('Despite the change in imprint to Charles Bennet, Samuel Aris [who had printed the first six books] probably printed the entire poem, for his signed ornaments appear on sheets throughout the work', Coleridge, p.207), and then often reprinted throughout the eighteenth century. In a letter of November 1734 Rolli himself described the circumstances of this edition: 'I am preparing the edition of Paradise Lost, the last six books are already printed, and many sheets of the first part reprinted, wherever it was necessary to refine or make changes; a few pages of variants will also be added. The merciful Prince of Wales, devoted to literature, who is now reading Orlando Furioso with me, favours me so much that I consider myself very lucky. He has incited me to finish my work, which I had neglected; I did not want to start a subscription, which is nowadays considered as outright begging, and he gave me one hundred pounds for the publication' (BCEM, Autografi Campori, Rolli, our translation). Paolo Antonio Rolli (1687-1765) lived in London from 1715 to 1744. There 'he was well known and liked in musical and literary circles as a poet, librettist, translator and editor [.] He had already established a literary reputation in Italy, when he had been invited back to London by Thomas Herbert, eighth earl of Pembroke [ ] to serve in his household as an Italian teacher' (Taylor, Foreign-language printing in London 1500-1900, p. 159). He later became preceptor to the Prince of Wales and the Royal Princesses.Coleridge, Milton, 161c; Wickenheiser 635. Language: Italian

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur-Dresden 1813). Porträt des Kaufmanns Basse. Rad.

      - Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur-Dresden 1813). Porträt des Kaufmanns Basse. Radierung auf Papier. -- Technik: -- Radierung auf Papier. unten links in der Platte signiert: "A. Graff fec. ". -- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Anton Graff (1736-1813). Auf dem Lande. Kreide, minimal weiß gehöht

      - Anton Graff (1736 Winterthur-Dresden 1813). Auf dem Lande. Kreide, minimal weiß gehöht, auf braunem Papier. -- Beschreibung: -- Kreide, minimal weiß gehöht, auf braunem Papier. verso bezeichne: "Anton Graff" und nummeriert: "65". Sammlung A. O. Meyer -- Größe/Size: -- 22,1 x 24,9 cm. -- Zustand: -- Guter Zustand, ganz leichter Mittelknick. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Memorie della vita Giusto Fontanini, Venezia, 1755

Fontanini Giusto, 1666-1736 - Memorie della vita Giusto Fontanini, Venezia, 1755. Appresso Pietro Valvasense, 4°, 30x20 cm., original vellum binding, 227 pp., little waterstained, small wormhole. To read the complete book, please klick the below link. Modern parchment cardboard. Piece as black sheepskin. The human trial, philosophical poem Pope is translated into prose, and is preceded by a long preface of the translator. Letters in Turkey, Saint-Foix was inspired by the model of Montesquieu (itself was modeled after the Chinese Spy Manara), but if the letters are held on the same principle, they do not contain Montesquieu and the lengths of the descriptions, they are all assigned to the whole story and the comparison of manners and customs in French and Turkish. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

[N.p.]: Auf vieler Verlangen aufs neue dem Druck übergeben..., 1736 Small 8vo, contemporary brown & white marbled boards, paper backstrip label, in modern beige buckram folding box with paper backstrip label. 175, [1(instructions to binder)] pp. Double-page frontispiece containing two images; folding cosmic diagram; and two plates, all hand-colored copperplate engravings; the diagram & plates tipped onto the fore-edges of text leaves. Title-page printed in red & black. Covers well worn; some minor internal staining and neat annotation; small ballpoint arrow on title-page indicating date '1696'; name of the author of the foreword on p. [2]; overall a sound copy of this important mystical text with astonishing illustrations. Second Edition; the work was evidently compiled in 1696 and first published in Leiden in 1723. Later editions were issued in 1779 & 1850; and the book may well be in print today. This edition is most uncommon, with OCLC locating it only at Duke and the Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek in Gottingen. Johann Georg Gichtel (1638-1710) was a theologian and attorney who embraced mysticism and the teachings of the inspirational Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), whose works he edited in 1682-1683. Gichtel wound up leading a life of ecstatic poverty in Amsterdam as head of a small cult known as Gichtelians or Brethren of the Angel. Their goal, and the thrust of this complex hermetic-mystical treatise, is the understanding of Divine Wisdom through self-knowledge and through freedom from all carnal desires. The four human images in the frontispiece and plates depict the evolution of humankind from the spirit by means of an inward spiraling of energies through the planets, although the iconography is much more complex than that. The large cosmic diagram seems to combine elements of astrology and spiritualism. These images were evidently based on visions of Gichtel's and may have been prepared by Graber, whose role in this publication is uncertain. The book was probably edited by Johann Wilhelm Überfeld (whose name is written in on p. [2]) (1659-1731), a follower of Gichtel who in 1730 published an edition of Gichtel's edition of Böhme's writings that is now regarded as standard. The first edition has appeared 3 times at auction since 1975, this edition only once; no copy is noted online although copies of the 1st and 4th editions are there as of 9/07.
