London: T Read, 1735. Prince Eugene of Savoy was a statesman of the Holy Roman Empire, the Archduchy of Austria and one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history. He held one of the highest offices of state at the Imperial court in Vienna. He served three Holy Roman Emperors and saw many battles including fighting against the Ottoman Turks at the Siege of Vienna, the War of the Holy League and in the Nine Years' War. Other wars include The War of The Spanish Succession and the Austro-Turkish War. This work is extremely scarce, and is the first edition. Its author is unknown. There was a subsequent edition, according to the ESTC catalogue, published in 1736. The author of this work is not stated. However, the dedication is to Lieutenant General Wade. George Wade was a British Army officer who served in the Nine Years' War, War of Spanish Succession, Jacobite rising of 1715 and the War of Quadruple Alliance. All wars that Francis Eugene also served. This work not only documents the life of a popular general, but also gives an insight into a fascinating period of military history. With the bookplate of James Brodie of Brodie, 21st Thane and Chief of Clan Brodie to the front pastedown. Brodie was a Scottish politician and botanist. He served in parliament as the MP for Elginshire for several years and was also Lord Lieutenant of Nairn. His work in the field of botany was focused on cryptogamic flora and he discovered a number of new species. He was a fellow of the Linnean Society and the Royal Society. The genus Brodiaea is named in his honour. In a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHIPS & SHIPPING].
Not in Cat. NHSM; Knuttel; Picarta; STCN; WorldCat. Only copies located of the first three issues covering four months (all known to have been published) of lists ships lost, stranded or returned damaged, giving the name of the ship and captain, the port of origin and/or destination, and the final location (with some information about the circumstances). They also include some information about ships wrecked earlier when news of their fate has only recently been received. They also include lists of all ships going to and from the Island Texel (and for March and April also out of and into the Maas River), again giving the names of the ships and captains, and their port of departure or destination. Texel and the Maas were among the most important centres of the international shipping trade. Besides the many European points of origin and destination (from Ireland and Spain to Estonia and Saint Petersburg, and from Norway to Italy), the lists include ships going to or coming from Smyrna (Izmir), Guinea, Ceylon, Batavia (Jakarta), Greenland, Strait Davis, Surinam, Curacao, New York and elsewhere. Altogether they cover several hundred voyages. The books themselves make it clear that they were the first three issues of what was supposed to be a continuing serial publication, and the issue for April 1735 still explicitly says it is to be continued monthly, but the present copies of the first three issues covering January to April 1735 (January and February in a single issue) are the only ones known to survive. It seems likely no more were published and that the short life of the pub … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sixty-five engraved maps and plates (sixty-two folding, one page of engraved sheet music, two single-page plates) by Delahaye, Desbrulins, and Fonbonne after d'Anvillee, Humblot, Lucas, Le Parmentier, and others; four engraved head-pieces after Humblot, occasional engraved initials. Original mottled calf, boards gilt ruled, spines gilt, all edges marbled. Spines and hinges neatly repaired. Light tanning and foxing. A very good set. The first edition of Du Halde's celebrated and comprehensive history of China and the most important cartographic record of the region from the 18th century. The work is further noted as a cornerstone of northwest Americana, as it contains the earliest printed record of Bering's first expedition with the earliest map of any portion of present-day Alaska. In 1685, seeking to capitalize on failing relations between China and the Portuguese (i.e. papal) missionaries over the rites controversy, Louis XIV sent six French Jesuits to China as scientific emissaries. These early French missionaries would launch incredible interest in France for all things related to China. In 1735, Jesuit priest and historian Jean Baptiste Du Halde was given the monumental task of collating and editing the published and manuscript accounts of Jesuit travellers in China into a single work. POPPLE, Henry (d.1743)
Engrav'd by Willm. Henry Toms, London, 1735. (20 1/2 x 15 3/8 inches). Engraved map by William Henry Toms, with very fine full contemporary hand-colouring (with twenty-two integral inset views and plans) on 15 double-page and 5 single-page sheets, with full contemporary hand-colouring, mounted on guards throughout, with the double-page key map by Toms, with full hand-colouring. Expertly bound to style in half 18th-century russia over original 18th-century marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt with red morocco spine label. Housed in a modern blue morocco-backed box. A monument to 18th-century American cartography: a highly attractive fully-coloured copy of the first large-scale map of North America, and the first printed map to show the thirteen colonies. Popple maps with full contemporary colour are exceedingly rare. Popple produced this map under the auspices of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle disputes arising from the rival expansion of English, Spanish and French colonies. "France claimed not only Canada, but also territories drained by the Mississippi and it's tributaries - in practical terms, an area of half a continent" (Goss The Mapping Of North America p.122.) The present copy of Popple's map, with its full contemporary hand-colouring, would have been particularly useful in these disputes. Mark Babinski in his masterly monograph on this map notes that 'The typical coloring of fully colored copies . is described best by a contemporary manuscript legend on the end-paper affixing the Key map to the binding in the King George III copy a … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORRIS, GAEL. - [AGE-RELATED RENT AND LEASING]
London, J. Brotherton, 1735. 12mo. Bound in one beautiful contemporary full mottled calf binding with four raised bands and red title-label with gilt lettering to spine. Single gilt line-border to boards, inside which a lovely blindstamped ornamental border to one side. All edges of boards with blindstamped ornamentations. P. 1 has a contemporary neat inscription reading: "Exam.d Morris" - in the author's own hand? Macclesfield copy, with the armorial bookplate of Earls of Macclesfield to pasted down front end-paper and Shirburn Castle (seat of the Earls of Macclesfield) armorial blindstamp to first four leaves Ex-libris. A lovely, clean, and crisp copy. IV, 48 + (2), 92 pp. ¶ Exceedingly scarce first edition of Morris' book of tables for renewing and purchasing leases in relation to age, being the most accurate and comprehensive list of tables published at the time. The work was considered controversial due to the proposed fall in rent in relation to age, which was seen as a discrimination against young people; a concept which today has been implemented in virtually all aspects of banking and insurance. "As late as 1735, Gael Morris, a writer of commercial manuals on annuities and leases, explained that annuities could frequently be purchased cheaper on lives aged between 30 and 40 than on lives under 25 because 'the Hazards of Persons between 15 and 25 are so many' - a conclusion making some intuitive sense but strictly at odds with the lessons taught by Halley's table. There seems to have existed, in short, a deep reluctance to embrace the discovery that the value of ann … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Thought to have been read by writers such as Montesquieu and Rousseau, Chardin's account stands apart from those of other travellers to the region (Caucasus) at this time through its awareness of cultural difference and relativity and in its desire to place accuracy above romanticism." (Speake, The Literature of Travel and Exploration, 1).Chardin set out from Paris for Persia and India. He reached Ispahan 1673, spent four years in Persia, visited India and returned by the Good Hope in 1677. The first volume contains the trip from Paris to Isfahan, the second contains a particular description of Isfahan and the relation of the author's two voyages, from Ispahan to Bander-Abassi, the third conta … [Click Below for Full Description]

DSB II, pp. 4-8; Moström 293; Schuh I 488; Ward 179. Enlarged second edition of an important mineralogical work by the Swedish scholar Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735-1784). "From 1775 he began to coin names related to chemical composition, and he attempted a general reform in Sciagraphia regni mineralis (1782) ... Following Linnaeus, Bergman divided inorganic substances into classes, genera, and species; and, as Linnaeus had done with plants and animals, he defined each class and genus by one word and each species by two" (DSB). The first edition consisted of 166 pages and J.C. Delaméthrie doubled the amount of information for the present edition. It provided the first classification of minerals by their composition, and thus based on purely chemical principles. Bergman's analysis also disproved the widely held "saline principle" in crystallization. The two engraved plates belonging to this edition show equipment and crytaline geometry.Somewhat foxed. Bindings rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed.

Pp. 16 n.n. + 168 + 8 n.n. Paris: Le Mercier, 1735. Four volumes. Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes by M. Baquoy after A. Humblot. Half titles.
