Homann, Johann Baptist
Nuremberg: : , C1735. Engraved double page (23 1/2" x 20 1/2 "), partially hand colored, large title uncolored cartouche in upper right corner. One sheet of a two-sheet map, but has a complete appearance. Expert tape repairs on verso at centerfold, slight aging and browning; otherwise about near fine with a strong impression. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was considered the father of German mapmaking, and in 1715 was actually appointed the Geographer to the Emperor. He founded his mapmaking business in 1702, and he would produce several major atlases between 1707 and 1716. This is a detailed and attractive map of part of the southwestern part of Germany that includes Wuerttemberg. While the map is one sheet of a two-sheet map, it has a complete appearance, and an elaborate title cartouche. Our inventory includes both sheets but as seperate maps. Van De Gohm: Antique Maps. Bagrow: History of Cartography.

Martin Engelbrecht
Acquaforte, circa 1735. 410 365mm

BERGMAN, Torbern Olof.
Moström 293; Ward 179. Enlarged and highly valuable edition of this important mineralogical work. The first edition of the Sciagraphia consisted of 166 pages, and J.C. Delaméthrie provided the enlargements in the present edition. Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735-1784) was a Swedish scholar, and his book provided the first classification of minerals by their composition, and thus based on purely chemical principles. Bergman's analysis also disproved the widely held "saline principle" in crystallization. The two engraved plates belonging to this edition show equipment and crytaline geometry. The first is engraved by Sellier. The 7 numbered plates, which are extra added in this copy, are also engraved by Sellier, after Fossier, and depict minerals.Very good copy, only very slightly foxed, spine of first volume slightly damaged at top and bottom. Interesting copy of a valuable mineralogical work with 7 extra plates.

William Wycherley
London-Benjamin Motte, 1735. Book. A collection of Wycherley's comedy plays including the controversial Country Wife and ThePlain Dealer followed by examples of hisearlier work. Each play is paired with an engraved illustrated plate. A product of the more tolerant early Restoration Period, The Country Wife was controversial for its sexual explicitness even in its own time. The title itself contains a lewd pun. Between 1753 and 1924, it was considered too outrageous to be performed at all. The Plain Dealer is based on Moliere's Le Misanthrope and isthought to beWycherley's finest work. Love in a Wood and The Gentleman Dancing-Master were generally considered to be too discordant to be popular. Condition: In a calf binding. Externally, sound with marks to front and rear boards. Corners are bumpedand there isslight loss to head of spine. Front joint is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound with light foxing to pages otherwise pages bright. Overall: VERY GOOD. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
