Two Silver Pheasants and a Black-crowned Night Heron in a landscape.

      - Signed and dated, lower right W V ROYEN 1735, also dated lower left: 1735, inscribed in brown ink on verso: 'dese vogels sijn bij d: edl: aghtb: Heer de Heer Theodorus deLeeuw/ na het Leven getekent inde Lust plaas van sijn edelen genaamt/ elsenburg door Mr Willem van Rojen 1735. Watercolour and gouache over traces of black chalk within black chalk framing lines. 303 by 436mm. As the inscription on the verso records, these birds were seen by Van Royen in the collection of the eminent Amsterdam merchant, Theodorus de Leeuw (1679-1744), at his country house of Elsenburg, on the river Vecht, near Maarssen. De Leeuw lavished considerable resources on improvements to this rural retreat, and seems to have commissioned Daniel Marot to design an elaborate summerhouse in the grounds (for further information, see R. van Luttervelt, 'De Buitenplaatsen aan de Vecht' 1948, pp. 100-2).Another watercolour of birds by Van Royen (sold, Dordrecht, Mak, 5 October 1993, lot 37) is also dated 1735 and inscribed with the name of De Leeuw, and there is also an 18th century sale record of a painting by Royen of birds on the terraces of Elsenburg (sold, Amsterdam, P. van der Schley/ J. Yver, 18 July 1786, lot 277). Together these are the only three known examples of the works by Van Royen that can be linked with a specific patron. Relatively few drawings of Van Royen are known, but these include dated works from as early as 1711 (sold, London, Sotheby's, 19 June 1973, lot 62), which stand as important precursors of the bird watercolours of Aert Schouman and the younger generation of Dutch artists.Exhibited: Leeuwarden, Museum Het Princessehof, 'Oude tekeningen uit drie eeuwen; Collectie Hans van Leeuwen', 1977, cat. no 46; Amsterdam/ Dordrecht 1994-5, cat. no. 42, reproduced in colour p. 6.         A Map of the County of Savannah From "Der Aufuhliche Nachrichten."

Halle: Samuel Urlsperger, 1735. RARE 18TH CENTURY MAP DESCRIBING THE SETTLEMENT OF SAVANNAH GEORGIA Copperplate engraving Paper size: 15 ½" by 14 ¼" This rare map describes Georgia after its first year of settlement. Published by Samuel Urlsperger in Halle, Germany in 1735, it was part of the monumental collection commonly known as the "Salzburger Tracts". James Edward Oglethorpe, Georgia's founder, was believed to have been forwarding maps to Germany in an effort to encourage displaced Germans to make the English colony their new home. Subjects of the Catholic archbishop of Salzburg, driven by his persecution to seek refuge in various other states and countries, became known as the "Salzburgers". A company of them came to Georgia in 1734 receiving their passage and allowances for tools, provisions, seed, and having the rights and privileges of Englishmen. The original settlement of the Salzburgers was at Ebenezer, shown north of Savannah on a small tributary of the Savannah River. Within the present limits of Georgia there had been almost no permanent occupation by Europeans before the year 1733. During the late seventeenth century however, the Spanish and French attempted to secure a monopoly of the Indian trade. James Oglethorpe entered into negotiations with a chief of one of these tribes, and secured for the British a grant of land near the mouth of the Savannah. With the help of the same chief, a treaty of alliance was also made with the lower Creek Indians. The tribes surrendered a tract of land near the coast between the Savannah and the Altamaha, and assured they would not communicate with the French and the Spaniards. These arrangements, agreed to by the Indians of the back country, were formally ratified by the common council of the trustees in 1733, proving effective in protecting the colony from attacks during the critical period of its early history. By that first summer, the town of Savannah had been laid out and lands were allotted to individual settlers in regular assignments of fifty acre lots. The inhabitants were dependent upon common stock; they were governed by Oglethorpe in paternalistic fashion, and for many years the colony had only a rudimentary political organization. This elaborate and decorative work delineates the geography of the farms, settlements, villages, roads, forts, and outposts which surrounded early Savannah. Shown adjacent to the town is Georgia's Utopian cadastre, which is made up of a regularly sized rectangular town, a garden, and outlying farm lots. A remarkable historical record of the founding of Georgia, this finely detailed engraving is a unique document capturing the promising settlement of one of America's most beloved cities.. Book.

Plan Of The Town Of Barcelona

1735 - London, c.1735, 320 x 420mm. An bird's eye view depicting the layout of the fortifications of Barcelona, the title contained in an attractive rococo cartouche in the top left hand corner. Engraved for Paul Rapin de Thoyras's "History of England" for the chapter concerning the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The War of the Spanish Succession was a major European conflict that arose in 1701 after the death of the last Spanish Habsburg king, Charles II. Charles had bequeathed all of his possessions to Philip, duc d'Anjou a grandson of the French King Louis XIV who thereby became Philip V of Spain. The Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg fought to protect his own dynasty's claim to the Spanish inheritance. As Louis XIV began to expand his territories more aggressively, however, other European nations (chiefly England, Portugal and the Dutch Republic) entered on the Holy Roman Empire's side to check French expansion.

Paris: J. Boudot & J. Guerin, 1735. An uncommon auction catalogue, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. The library was a large one (6496 lots) and contained some outstanding 16th- and 17th-century rarities as well as strong collections in history, belles-lettres, numismatics, music, and the sciences (especially mineralogy). Very good copy. Half-title lacking. The placement of the arms on the lower cover only is most unusual. ❧ Bléchet, p. 91. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Books Auctions...1643-1830, 39. Voor de maand April, 1735. Amsterdam, widow of J. van Egmont, [1735]. 3 works in 1 volume. 4to. With the same small woodcut vignette on the title-page of each of the 3 works (a winged putto with foliage and fruits). Modern white sheepskin(?), blue paper sides.

Not in Cat. NHSM; Knuttel; Picarta; STCN; WorldCat. Only copies located of the first three issues covering four months (all known to have been published) of lists ships lost, stranded or returned damaged, giving the name of the ship and captain, the port of origin and/or destination, and the final location (with some information about the circumstances). They also include some information about ships wrecked earlier when news of their fate has only recently been received. They also include lists of all ships going to and from the Island Texel (and for March and April also out of and into the Maas River), again giving the names of the ships and captains, and their port of departure or destination. Texel and the Maas were among the most important centres of the international shipping trade. Besides the many European points of origin and destination (from Ireland and Spain to Estonia and Saint Petersburg, and from Norway to Italy), the lists include ships going to or coming from Smyrna (Izmir), Guinea, Ceylon, Batavia (Jakarta), Greenland, Strait Davis, Surinam, Curacao, New York and elsewhere. Altogether they cover several hundred voyages. The books themselves make it clear that they were the first three issues of what was supposed to be a continuing serial publication, and the issue for April 1735 still explicitly says it is to be continued monthly, but the present copies of the first three issues covering January to April 1735 (January and February in a single issue) are the only ones known to survive. It seems likely no more were published and that the short life of the publication and ephemeral nature of its contents led people to discard issues when they became out of date. Fortunately the present copies survived. In very good condition. An essential source for any study of the shipping trade ca. 1735.
