Die Originalausgabe von Peter Lauremberg (1585-1639) erschien 1633. Die populäre Schrift erlebte im 17. Jahrhundert zahlreiche Auflagen. (Vorwort 4. Seite). Compared with the original and corrected throughout by John Wesley, gilding on border of front and back covers, on spine, raised spine, frontispiece and four engraved plates, some stains and penciling, inscriptions, calf cover, inscription on other side of frontis. is headed Cantaur. Perronet Anno 1758 and extensively speaks of another edition of this famous work which was mentioned in the Monthly Review for August of that year. [Bound with:] [LA CONDAMINE] [Drop title:] Nouveau Projet d'une Mesure invariable, proper a devenir universelle.

First edition of the official account of the scientific operations undertaken during the author's famous geodetic mission to Peru, in conjunction with Bouguer and Godin, to measure the meridian near the equator, and so settle the controversy between the Cartesians and Newtonians as to whether the earth was flattened or elongated at the poles.<br/><br/> This famous expedition to the equinoctial regions of Spanish South America "had as its goal the verification of Newton's hypothesis on the flattening of the terrestrial globe in the polar regions and, thereby, the resolution of the controversy regarding the form of the earth that was then dividing French scientists. Maupertuis, Clairaut, and Le Monnier went to Lapland to measure several degrees of meridian at the arctic circle, while Godin, Bouguer, and La Condamine were sent to Peru, territory belonging to Philip V of Spain, in order to make the same measurement in the vicinity of the equator" (DSB XV, p. 27)). <br/><br/> La Condamine left Paris on 14 April 1735, arriving in Quito (then in Peru) on 4 June. Work had scarcely begun when tension arose between Louis Godin, the head of the mission, and Piere Bouguer. Relations between the scientist gradually deteriorated and eventually the three were taking measurements and observations independently. The work was finally completed in 1743. The three men returned to Paris separately, La Condamine taking the longest and most dangerous route, south along the Amazon. After many difficulties La Condamine finally arrived in Paris on 23 February 1745, after an absence of almost yen years. <br/><br/> "The scientific result of the expedition was clear; the earth is indeed a spheroid flattened at the poles, as Newton had maintained. Bouger and La Condamine were unable, however, to agree on the joint publication of their works. Their long quarrel continued through a series of memoirs that were essentially mutual refutations of no scientific value; it ceased only with the death of Bouguer in 1758 (Godin died in 1760). The last survivor of the expedition, La Condamine, who was a less gifted astronomer than Godin and a less reliable mathematician than Bouguer, often received the major part of the credit, probably because of his amiable nature and his talent as a writer. <br/><br/> "La Condamine returned from Peru with a project for a universal measurement of length, the unit which would be the length of a pendulum beating once a second at the equator. Although Huygens had already suggested the idea in his <i>Horologium oscillatorium</i> (1673). La Condamine explained it more clearly in a memoir presented to the Academy in November 1747, which was read at a public meeting the following April" (<i>ibid</i>, p. 271). An offprint of this paper is bound in to the present volume. <br/><br/> Maupertuis' expedition did not encounter the same difficulties as La Condamine's, and the results of his expedition to Lapland were published several years earlier than the present work, in <i>La figure de la terre</i> (Paris, 1738). <br/><br/> <i>DSB</i> XV: 269-73. Borba de Moraes, p. 447; JCB 947; Norman 1250; Sabin 38483; Bosch 201 II.. 4to (242 x 191 mm), pp. [2:title to main work], viii ('Nouveau Projet' offprint), [10:index], 1-266, x.         Tab XLI (41), Tomus II

Amsterdam 1735 - Albert Seba (1665-1736). Copperplate engraving with original hand color from Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium Thesauri, Tomus II. Published in Amsterdam by Wetsten, Smith and Waesberg, 1735. Paper size: 14" x 21" Condition: very good. Albert Seba&#146;s magnificent &#147;Thesauri&#148; is a catalogue of his personal natural history collection, an immense conglomeration of specimens of a number of exotic plant and animal life. The son of a Frisian peasant who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company, Seba was an apothecary practicing in Amsterdam when he began to collect. His scientific interests and curiosity motivated him to amass this collection on a series of travels to the East and West Indies, and from purchases he made of specimens collected by travelers the world over. Many of the snakes, plants, fish and shells illustrated and described in his &#147;Thesauri&#148; were based on the specimens Seba collected in this &#147;cabinet of curiosities.&#148; In fact, many of the extravagant designs of the engravings were copies of the arrangements of the specimens in the drawers of his cabinet and the walls upon which he hung his collection, which in this way became a sort of predecessor of the modern museum. The collection was a valuable source to European natural historians, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to travel to the far flung destinations where the specimens originated. It is documented, for example, that Carolus Linneas visited the collection when he was in Amsterdam. These fine engravings made Seba&#146;s unparalleled collection accessible to a much wider spectrum of enthusiasts, and modern viewers, too, can appreciate the stylized compositions and near-abstract quality of their fanciful compositions.

New Voyages to North-America. Containing an account of the several nations of that vast continent; their customs, commerce, and way of navigation upon the lakes and rivers; the several attempts of the English and French to dispossess one another; with the reasons of the miscarriage of the former; and the various adventures between the French, and the Iroquese Confederates of England, from 1683 to 1694

Printed for J. Osborn [vol I]; Printed for J. Walthoe, R. Wilkin, J. and J. Bonwicke, J. Osborn, S. Birt, T. Ward and E. Wicksteed [vol II], London 1735 - Later mottled calf by Morrell, gilt triple-fillet borders with circular floral corner designs on the covers, spine with raised bands in six compartments, decoratively tooled in gilt, morocco gilt lettering pieces in the second and third compartments, all edges gilt. Provenance: Jonathan Carter (contemporary signature on title) The principal early-18th century description of Canada: this beautiful copy of the second edition extra-illustrated with three additional plates from the first. Lahontan's narrative is of considerable value for his travels in the Lake region. There is much accurate information about the region, including an Algonquin dictionary at the rear of the second volume. The additional Letter XVI, which details a fictional journey west of the Mississippi, has often placed this work in a poor light. Historian Reuben Gold Thwaites suggests, however, that it can be read as "an anticipation of Swift;" that is, that the chapter was an intentional parody. "In simple sentences, easily read and comprehended by the masses, Lahontan recounted not only his own adventures and the important events that occurred beneath his eyes in the much-talked-of region of New France, but drew a picture of the simple delights of life in the wilderness, more graphic than had yet been presented to the European world. His idyllic account of manners and customs among the savages in the heart of the American forest . was a picture which fascinated the 'average reader' in that romantic age, eager to learn of new lands and strange peoples" (Thwaites, "Introduction" in his 1905 edition of Lahontan's New Voyages). Although the title describes the work as complete with 23 engraved "maps and cuts," this second edition of Lahontan's New Voyages was only issued with 20 (the title statement being a holdover from the first edition). This copy, however, contains the three plates supplied from a copy of the first edition. All three plates appear in the first volume, facing pages 55, 161 and 185 respectively. Howes L25; Sabin 38645; Pilling 2184. (8 x 5 inches). 20 engraved maps and plates (8 folding), as issued, and EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 3 engraved plates from the 1703 first edition.
