Voor de maand April, 1735. Amsterdam, widow of J. van Egmont, [1735]. 3 works in 1 volume. 4to. With the same small woodcut vignette on the title-page of each of the 3 works (a winged putto with foliage and fruits). Modern white sheepskin(?), blue paper sides.

Not in Cat. NHSM; Knuttel; Picarta; STCN; WorldCat. Only copies located of the first three issues covering four months (all known to have been published) of lists ships lost, stranded or returned damaged, giving the name of the ship and captain, the port of origin and/or destination, and the final location (with some information about the circumstances). They also include some information about ships wrecked earlier when news of their fate has only recently been received. They also include lists of all ships going to and from the Island Texel (and for March and April also out of and into the Maas River), again giving the names of the ships and captains, and their port of departure or destination. Texel and the Maas were among the most important centres of the international shipping trade. Besides the many European points of origin and destination (from Ireland and Spain to Estonia and Saint Petersburg, and from Norway to Italy), the lists include ships going to or coming from Smyrna (Izmir), Guinea, Ceylon, Batavia (Jakarta), Greenland, Strait Davis, Surinam, Curacao, New York and elsewhere. Altogether they cover several hundred voyages. The books themselves make it clear that they were the first three issues of what was supposed to be a continuing serial publication, and the issue for April 1735 still explicitly says it is to be continued monthly, but the present copies of the first three issues covering January to April 1735 (January and February in a single issue) are the only ones known to survive. It seems likely no more were published and that the short life of the publication and ephemeral nature of its contents led people to discard issues when they became out of date. Fortunately the present copies survived. In very good condition. An essential source for any study of the shipping trade ca. 1735.

Prior owner names to front free-endpaper. Slight creasing to frontispiece. Otherwise, apart from an occasional instance of slight soiling or foxing, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce and important early title in John Wesley's large catalog of published works. References: Baker, 3; ESTC No. T28505. ~KM2~ This full translation of the devotional classic 'The Imitation of Christ' Wesley entitles 'The Christian's Pattern,' just as George Stanhope did in his 1698 translation, though Wesley's is widely considered a far more careful and accurate version of the original than Stanhope's much reprinted loose paraphrase. As bibliographer W.A. Copinger said, 'The translation of Wesley is certainly to be reckoned amongst the best,' even though the 1735 edition is 'little known, an abstract or abridgement of it having practically taken its place' (On the English Translations of the 'Imitatio Christi,' 1900). After the birth of the Methodist movement in 1738-39, Wesley produced the greatly abridged version, entitled 'An Extract of the Christian's Pattern,' first printed in 1741 and reprinted dozens of times thereafter in mostly small and inexpensive editions. John Wesley (1703-1791) was an Anglican cleric and Christian theologian who, with his brother Charles and fellow cleric George Whitefield, is credited with the foundation of the evangelical movement known as Methodism. The Imitation of Christ was originally written by Catholic monk Thomas Kempis (circa 1380-1471), as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427, at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. Full title of this edition: 'The Christian's Pattern; Or, a Treatise of the Imitation of Christ. Written Originally in Latin, By Thomas a Kempis. With a Preface, Containing an Account of the Usefulness of This Treatise: Directions for Reading It with Advantage; and Likewise an Account of this Edition. Compared with the Original and Corrected Throughout by John Wesley.' . Very Good. 1735. First Edition.

4 volumes, folio (429 × 274 mm). Contemporary cat's-paw calf, spines divided in compartments by six raised bands, contrasting red morocco labels in two, others richly gilt with floral tools, leaf sprays, etc., sides ruled in gilt with three-line fillet, marbled endpapers, red edges. With 65 maps and plates (all but one double-page or folding); titles in red and black incorporating engraved pictorial vignette by Baquoy after Humblot; with all half-titles; woodcut head- and tailpieces, typographic ornaments, historiated and decorative initials. Collector's book labels. A little skilful repair to spine-ends, an excellent set, tall and well-margined, contents clean and fresh, in a handsome contemporary binding. First edition of this cornerstone of any collection of books on China, which is also among the rarest and most desirable of important Americana, included in Rare Americana: A Selection of One Hundred and One Books, Maps and Prints not in the John Carter Library. This, "the first definitive European work on the Chinese empire" (Hill), was compiled by Du Halde, Jesuit former confessor to the duc d'Orléans, from the accounts, published and unpublished, prepared by 27 Jesuit missionaries during their travels. This encyclopaedic work not only provided valuable information on Chinese political institutions, education, language, medicine, science, customs and artefacts - importantly it is one of the earliest European sources on Chinese ceramics - but also marked the first appearance of 43 maps by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, internationally recognized as "the finest cartographer of his time" (Moreland & Bannister). Drawn from recent surveys commissioned by the Emperor Kang-hi from the Jesuits, these maps represented an immense improvement on existing knowledge and are considered by Tooley to be "the principal cartographic authority on China during the 18th century". For certain remote parts of northern China, Mongolia and Tibet, this work was the only adequate reference until the technological revolution in surveying in the 20th century. The work also contains the first separate map of Korea, together with a previously unpublished account of that country by Jean-Baptiste Régis. The book is also of considerable interest in terms of the exploration of America. Printed here for the first time is the eponymous Vitus Bering's account of his 1728 traverse of the Strait, "Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beering dans la Siberie." Of comparable importance is the map "Carte des pays traversees par le Capne. Beering depuis la ville de Tobolsk jusqu'a Kamtschatka" bound between pp. 452–3, based on Bering's manuscript map, and containing the first representation of any part of Alaska, St. Lawrence Island. The manuscripts followed a circuitous route to Du Halde. Bering, a Dane who had risen in the ranks of the Russian navy, was sponsored on his expedition by Peter the Great, and when he finally returned to St. Petersburg in 1730, five years after Peter's death, his account was sent as a gift to the King of Poland, who in turn "gave them to Du Halde with permission to do with them 'as he saw fit'" (Hill). Lada-Mocarski reports that in many copies pp. 451–2 in vol. IV have been supplanted by the map; in this copy, both are present. An excellent example of this fine work of 18th-century encyclopaedism, here in the superbly printed and engraved first French folio edition, considered by Lada-Mocarski to be "the most desirable and significant.

A VOYAGE TO ABYSSINIA. BY FATHER JEROME LOBO, A PORTUGUESE JESUIT ... WITH A CONTINUATION OF THE HISTORY OF ABYSSINIA ... BY MR. LEGRAND

London [i.e. Birmingham]: Printed for A. Bettesworth, and C. Hitch, 1735.. London [i.e. Birmingham]: Printed for A. Bettesworth, and C. Hitch, 1735.. xii,396,[8]pp. Octavo. Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, spine gilt extra, gilt red label. Very minimal foxing (unusual for this title), handsome contemporary engraved armorial bookplate on pastedown, upper joint cracking slightly, but quite sound, bit of wear to crown and toe of spine, otherwise an uncommonly nice copy. Folding chemise and cloth slipcase. First edition, first issue, of Samuel Johnson's first book publication, a translation commission he undertook for Thomas Warren, the Birmingham bookseller with whom he was staying at the time. Johnson worked from LeGrand's French translation of Lobo's work, producing more of an epitome than literal translation, but was more faithful to LeGrand's "Dissertations" which comprise a major portion of the text. Although hackwork, this project did provide Johnson with the background for his novel. A second issue exists, with a cancel title-leaf in black, but is very uncommon. The edition was printed on rather mediocre paper, subject to foxing and darkening, and while ordinary copies are not uncommon, copies in the condition represented by this copy are unusual indeed.         P. Virgilii Maronis Opera Interpretatione et Notis Illustravit Carolus Ruaeus Societatis Jesu Jussu Christianissimi Rigis in Usum Serenissimi Delphini

London- Apud J.Jand P.Knapton, R.Knaplock, D.Mid-winter, B.Sprint, W.Innys and R.Manby., 1735. London- Apud J.Jand P.Knapton, R.Knaplock, D.Mid-winter, B.Sprint, W.Innys and R.Manby., 1735 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. This fascinating collection presents a detailed anthology ofVirgil's complete works important for its illustrations. Beautifully illustrated throughout including a folding pictorial map, twelve platesand a frontispiece depicting Maronis presenting his works to the king. Really needs a rebind. Chapters include Georgicon ad C. Cilnium Maecenatem, Liber I, Ae Neidos Liber II and Georgicorum Liber IV. Anitated notes throughout and an extensive index to the rear. Although written in a similar style to late antique grammatical texts and incorporating some genuine grammatical material, there is much baffling and outlandish material contained in Virgilius' writings: he discusses twelve kinds of Latin, of which only one was in regular use, and attributes much of his lore to grammarians up to a thousand years old, who debate questions such as the vocative of ego. Monastic bookplate to the front pastedown. Condition: In original calf binding with decorative front board. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Front board is held by cords only and back board is cracked. Both hinges are weak and may fail in the post. Internally, generally firmly bound but strained in places. Worming to the first 66 pages, but does not obscure text. Pages are bright though with light scattered foxing. Monastic library stamp to the front endpaper. Overall: FAIR..

        La Saxe Galante

Amsterdam - Aux Depens de la Compagnie, 1735. Amsterdam - Aux Depens de la Compagnie, 1735 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A biographical account of the amorous adventures of Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony. In French. This edition published one year after the first, and two years after the death of Augustus the Strong in 1733. By Karl Ludwig Freiherr von Pollnitz (February 25, 1692 June 23, 1775), a German adventurer and writer from Issum. This work enjoyed great success and went through many editions in the years following its initial publication. Frederick Augustus I or Augustus II the Strong (12 May 1670 1 February 1733) was Elector of Saxony (as Frederick Augustus I), Imperial Vicar and became King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (as Augustus II). Augustus's great physical strength earned him the nicknames the Strong, the Saxon Hercules and Iron-Hand. He liked to show that he lived up to his name by breaking horseshoes with his bare hands and engaging in fox tossing with a single finger. Some contemporary sources, including Wilhelmine of Bayreuth, claimed that Augustus had as many as 365 or 382 children. Condition: In paper wraps. Externally, sound with repairs to paper of boards. Internally, firmly bound. Repairs to endpapers. Curling to textblock edges and somewhat age-toned throughout. Occasional marks and spots, especially to title page. Overall: GOOD.

Rohault's System of Natural Philosophy, Illustrated with Dr. Samuel Clarke's Notes Taken mostly out of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy. Done into English By John Clarke. The The Third Edition.

London Printed for James John and Paul Knapton. 1735 - 2 volumes. 8vo, 197 x 118 mms., pp. [xxxii], 285 [286 adverts]; 292 [293 - 315 Index, 316 adverts], 14 folding engraved plates at end of volume 1, 13 folding engraved plates at end of volume 2, for a total of 27 plates as called for, title-pages in red and black, contemporary calf; lacks titling labels, joints a bit strained, with ownership inscription on front paste-down end-paper of volume 1, "John Holman/ His Book/ Given Him/ By his Father/ Andrew Holman/ Anno 1762 Domini," with Holman's autograph on the title-page and that of "J. W. Taylor" as well. Or the rear paste-down end-paper of volume 1, a contemporary hand has written: "Good men as well as bad/ Have sometimes fortune sad." The French Cartesian Jacques Rohault (1618 - 1672) published his Traité de Physique in 1671; it was widely used a a textbook for the next 50 years and was reprinted more than twenty-five times between 1671 and 1739. John Ellis, a tutor at Caius College, Cambridge, asked Samuel Clarke (1675 - 1729) to translate the work into Latin, with editions published in 1697, 1702 and 1710. Clarke's brother, John Clarke (1682 - 1757), a distinguished Cambridge mathematician then translated the work into Englsh; the first edition was published in 1723, followed by a second edition in 1729. The work of the two brothers played a major part in moving Cambridge's mathematicians and physicists away from Cartesianism and towards Newtonianism.       Printed for G. Strahan at the Golden-Ball 1735 - B00JJ23EXA 1735 first edition 'Printed for G. Strahan, at the Golden-Ball, over-against the Royal-Exchange, in Cornhil' (London), 5 x 7 3/4 inches tall, recently rebound in hand marbled boards over green archival Pearce goat, gold-bordered stripe to boards, gilt lettering to spine, xxiv, 184 pp. Lacking blank endpapers, but otherwise complete. Association copy: 1738 prior owner signature of George Cleghorn, M.D. (see his biography below) to top of title page. Stamp of Dublin's Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (founded 1784) to title page and three other interior pages. Dampstain to inner margin of title page. Mild browning or foxing to some pages. Otherwise, a handsomely preserved copy of this scarce work. Reference: ESTC No. T81181. ~NNN~ The author of this book, William Hillary, M.D. (1697-1763), today is perhaps best remembered as one of the first physicians to attempt correlation of illness with climactic conditions, and as author of one of the earliest works on tropical disease, which contained the first clear description of tropical sprue, published in 1759, 'Observations on the Changes of the Air and the Concomitant Epidemical Diseases in the Island of Barbadoes, 1752-1758.' About this, Hillary's first book, biographer C.C. Booth wrote, 'This book is not remarkable for its description of the disease, nor for its treatment . He enthusiastically recommends the customary regimes of bleeding and purging, thought from time immemorial to remove evil humours from the body.' Rather, Booth points to noteworthy statements from Hillary's preface, including an unusually clear and simple description of the need for innoculation, a recently introduced practice which was far from acceptance among the public or medical community. Another is a statement from Hillary's preface which Booth calls 'as clear a plea for the importance of a scientific approach to medicine as has ever been written.' The prior owner of this book, George Cleghorn, M.D. (1716-1789), who signed the title page in 1738, was described by a medical historian as 'one of the most influential figures in eighteenth century Irish medicine.' Born in Scotland, Cleghorn studied under the tuition of Alexander Monro, primus, the outstanding Scottish physician of the day. In 1736, at the age of 20, Cleghorn was appointed surgeon to the 22nd Regiment of Foot and stationed on the Mediterranean island of Minorca, where he spent the next 13 years. This led to him writing his book, 'Observations on the Epidemical Diseases in Minorca from the Year 1744 to 1749,' which is now recognised as a classic work on epidemic diseases. Cleghorn apparently acquired this book by Hillary near the beginning of his Minorca assignment and no doubt consulted it in authoring his own book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
