Oratio inauguralis, de incremento philologiae sacrae ab idonea Arabiae atque Palaestinae exploratione sperando. Franeker, Willem Coulon, 1762. Folio. With the woodcut coat of arms of Friesland on the title-page. Mid-19th-century marbled wrappers.

First and only edition of a Latin oration delivered at the University of Franeker by Samuel Hendrik Manger (1735-1791), Arabist and specialist in Oriental languages and Hebrew antiquities, who had been appointed professor of oriental languages at the University in 1760. It shows his interest in archaeological research carried out in the Near East by means of voyages instigated by the German scholar Johann David Michaëlis. Manger thought this kind of research would herald a new age in our understanding of the scriptures. Some minor marginal browning and a couple small marginal tears, but still in very good condition. Top of wrappers chipped. An oration on archaeology's contributions to biblical studies, in a stately presentation.

The true Effigies of the Members of the Calve's Head Club, Held on ye 30th of January 1734, at ye Golden Eagle in Suffolk street in ye County of Middlesex.

London Jan. 30 1735 - Broadside, sm 4to., overall 7" x 8", engraved, neatly tipped onto stiff backing sheet. A Satire on the meeting by a group of gentlemen on the 30th January 1735 at a French Tavern in Suffolk Street describing themselves as the Calve's Head Club. At this meeting they dressed up in bloody clothes, exposed themselves to the mob who they treated with wine and strong drink, and made a bonfire before the door. This was too much for the mob who, disliking this cruel frolic, demolished the windows of the tavern and would have set the place on fire if the guards had not been called. The Calve's Head Club was set up shortly after the execution of King Charles I in derision of the memory of that King and the Stuart family. The toasts at the meeting are printed beneath the illustration: "The Healths", "To the pious Memory of Oliver Cromwell", "Damnation to the Race of the Stuarts", "To the glorious Year, 1648", "To the Man in the Mask, &c. &c. &c."         An Enquiry into the Life and Writings of Homer

London, 1735 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce first edition of Blackwell's translation of HomerScarceFirst EditionRe-bound in quarter leather with marbled boards and gilt detailPublished ananymously by Thomas BlackwellThomas Blackwell (1701 1757) was a Scottish classical scholar, born at Aberdeen. He took the degree of M. A. at the Marischal College in 1718. He was appointed professor of Greek in 1723, and was principal of the institution from 1748 until his death on the 8th of March 1757. In 1735 his first work, An Inquiry into the Life and Writings of Homer, was published anonymously. It was reprinted in 1736, and followed (in 1747) by Proofs of the Enquiry into Homer's Life and Writings, a translation of the copious notes in foreign languages which had previously appeared. This work, intended to explain the causes of the superiority of Homer to all the poets who preceded or followed him, shows considerable research, and contains many curious and interesting details. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is almost no wear to the extremities. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot. There is a very small closed tear to the map. Overall the condition of the book is very good..

Printed Broadside: "The Drunkard's Looking-glass: or, Short View of their present SHAME, and Future MISERY. Published in Love to those Concerned; and Recommended to them as a Tender Caution, to avoid the Same Excess - "

Dublin: Printed by and for Samuel Fuller, at the Globe in Meath-Street, 1735 - Althought the temperance movement in Ireland and the United States is usually associated with the nineteenth century, it is clear from this passionate 1735 Dublin broadside that the movement had it early advocates. Bristol and ESTC record a (presumed) Philadelphia printing of this same broadside, which was found bound in the New York Historical Society's copy of Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette for 1735-6 -- but ESTC does not record this Dublin printing of 1735. RARE (IRELAND) 15 x 9-1/2 inches. Printed on recto of a single sheet. Extensively repaired, loss of a few letters at fold. Matted. Bristol B974 (American printing); ESTCW34563 (American printing)

Die Originalausgabe von Peter Lauremberg (1585-1639) erschien 1633. Die populäre Schrift erlebte im 17. Jahrhundert zahlreiche Auflagen. (Vorwort 4. Seite).         The Christian's Pattern by Thomas A. Kempis - 1735

      - The Christian's Patter, or a Treatise of the Imitation of Christ. With a preface containing an account of the usefulness of this treatise: directions for reading it with advantage; and likewise an account of this edition. Compared with the original and corrected throughout by John Wesley, gilding on border of front and back covers, on spine, raised spine, frontispiece and four engraved plates, some stains and penciling, inscriptions, calf cover, inscription on other side of frontis. is headed Cantaur. Perronet Anno 1758 and extensively speaks of another edition of this famous work which was mentioned in the Monthly Review for August of that year. The Perronet family (Vincent and Margaret and their sons Edward and Charles) were good friends with the Wesley brothers, Edward later writing the hymn "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name", inscription shaved in binding at head and foot so author is difficult to identify but is strongly appears to be Edward Perronet.         Mesure des Trois Premiers Degrés du Méridien dans l'Hémisphere Austral, Tirée des Observations de de l'Académie Royale des Sciences, Envoyés par le Roi sous l'Équateur... [Bound with:] [LA CONDAMINE] [Drop title:] Nouveau Projet d'une Mesure invariable, proper a devenir universelle. Extrait d'un Mémoire lû à l'assemblée publique de l'Académie des Sciences, le 24 Avril 1748. N.p., n.d.Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1751.

First edition of the official account of the scientific operations undertaken during the author's famous geodetic mission to Peru, in conjunction with Bouguer and Godin, to measure the meridian near the equator, and so settle the controversy between the Cartesians and Newtonians as to whether the earth was flattened or elongated at the poles.<br/><br/> This famous expedition to the equinoctial regions of Spanish South America "had as its goal the verification of Newton's hypothesis on the flattening of the terrestrial globe in the polar regions and, thereby, the resolution of the controversy regarding the form of the earth that was then dividing French scientists. Maupertuis, Clairaut, and Le Monnier went to Lapland to measure several degrees of meridian at the arctic circle, while Godin, Bouguer, and La Condamine were sent to Peru, territory belonging to Philip V of Spain, in order to make the same measurement in the vicinity of the equator" (DSB XV, p. 27)). <br/><br/> La Condamine left Paris on 14 April 1735, arriving in Quito (then in Peru) on 4 June. Work had scarcely begun when tension arose between Louis Godin, the head of the mission, and Piere Bouguer. Relations between the scientist gradually deteriorated and eventually the three were taking measurements and observations independently. The work was finally completed in 1743. The three men returned to Paris separately, La Condamine taking the longest and most dangerous route, south along the Amazon. After many difficulties La Condamine finally arrived in Paris on 23 February 1745, after an absence of almost yen years. <br/><br/> "The scientific result of the expedition was clear; the earth is indeed a spheroid flattened at the poles, as Newton had maintained. Bouger and La Condamine were unable, however, to agree on the joint publication of their works. Their long quarrel continued through a series of memoirs that were essentially mutual refutations of no scientific value; it ceased only with the death of Bouguer in 1758 (Godin died in 1760). The last survivor of the expedition, La Condamine, who was a less gifted astronomer than Godin and a less reliable mathematician than Bouguer, often received the major part of the credit, probably because of his amiable nature and his talent as a writer. <br/><br/> "La Condamine returned from Peru with a project for a universal measurement of length, the unit which would be the length of a pendulum beating once a second at the equator. Although Huygens had already suggested the idea in his <i>Horologium oscillatorium</i> (1673). La Condamine explained it more clearly in a memoir presented to the Academy in November 1747, which was read at a public meeting the following April" (<i>ibid</i>, p. 271). An offprint of this paper is bound in to the present volume. <br/><br/> Maupertuis' expedition did not encounter the same difficulties as La Condamine's, and the results of his expedition to Lapland were published several years earlier than the present work, in <i>La figure de la terre</i> (Paris, 1738). <br/><br/> <i>DSB</i> XV: 269-73. Borba de Moraes, p. 447; JCB 947; Norman 1250; Sabin 38483; Bosch 201 II.. 4to (242 x 191 mm), pp. [2:title to main work], viii ('Nouveau Projet' offprint), [10:index], 1-266, x.
